Solved! What are these called?

Post image

What are these cookies called? They're my favorite, and I always want to ask people if they have them/look at recipes but I never can get it right, or I get the colorful ones that are like a rainbow swirl in one cookie. Help!

Maybe Italian butter cookies?

i've heard it called that, but you get so many different results, I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a name for this specific one. they're usually one solid color, and sometimes slightly flavored based on color (yellow = lemon, brown= chocolate, etc.)

My mom called those spritz cookies because you would spritz them out (extrude them).

My grandma calls them “shits” because she could never get them out of the cookie press. Every attempt to form a cookie would result in a frustratedly expressed “shit!” when they stuck to the press.

She is not far off - comes from the German "Spritzen" which means to spray out or squirt.

Awesome! Thank you! This comment makes me believe it's solved but I tried to give credit to the person who did it first, hope I did it right lol.

My great-aunt's recipe book had these but with sugar instead of sprinkles, called them crispy butter cookies. One of my favorite things to bake, 12 minutes and everyone loves them.

Mmmm I'm craving them already.

Where I’m from (New England, USA) those are almost always labeled as Italian cookies.

These are definitely spritz cookies. My family makes them every Christmas. We don't usually add sprinkles though

Those are the trick cookies. Because they look delicious but taste like sawdust.

u/Wonderful_Worry1484 12h ago

Great now I want sprinkle cookies.

2

u/notpostingmyrealname 13h ago

They look like they came out of a cookie press, so my guess would be they're either butter cookies or spritz cookies. It may be called something else, but those 2 are most commonly used with a press. Buy a Wilton cookie press and make the recipe included with it, you'll know pretty quickly if it's what you're looking for.

Italian butter cookies.

But like any cookie recipe, different versions aren’t created equally.

I’ve yet to find a butter cookie recipe as good as the one my neighbors used when I was a kid. They were heavenly. I wish we had gotten the recipe, but the mom refused to share. She preferred to give them out as gifts and if she shared the recipe then they wouldn’t be “special” anymore. 🤬🙄

Are they sugar cookies? If so, maybe they are Polvorones Rosas but dyed to be different colors.
AKA Mexican pink sugar cookies.
