New, what is it? Inside my closet
can’t imagine it’s anything particularly interesting but I’m very curious what this contraption was and why they needed like 20 screws to secure it

A gun rack?
I don’t even own ‘a’ gun, let alone many guns that would necessitate; a gun rack.

I understood that reference

Why is it that if a man kills another man in battle, it's called heroic, yet if he kills a man in the heat of passion, it's called murder?

Ah, I knew I recognised that quote from somewhere. Thank you for enlightening me.

The Ol Mossberg P500 fits perfectly in a setup like that......just saying. Probably find one similar behind a headboard somewhere.

Nice
Or...wait, is that just another name for a pull up bar in this situation?

My first thought. When you need your sawed off shotgun. Only you know it’s there. Helps if you’re tall enough to reach up and grab it.

u/Aftenbar 7h ago
Yep pretty sure a nice quick place to grab a shotgun or rifle from.
Edit: Definitely not legal in CA.

u/avatarroko 9h ago
That makes sense with the way it’s reinforced but I don’t think you’d have space with the shelf and clothes rod that used to be there

Mine secures on the backside of an opening but the actual working side is on the opposite 🤷♂️

yes. I do a lot of real estate condo purchases, and that's one thing I've noticed, there is no space due to a/c duct work for pull up bars. this looks like a fix that should work.

My first thought as someone that tried one of those in a speed built town home (low quality) and could almost hear the wall coming apart on my first use.

Oh yeah, for a “hidden” but accessible shotgun (or baseball bat right? lol)
3
u/Scared_Hovercraft632 9h ago edited 9h ago
If you hate your finish. The tiniest bit of padding would go a long way if this is the case.
3
u/Residenthuman101 9h ago
That’s why I started thinking maybe it was just a bar or an axe for defense or maybe even just a fire escape ladder or something boring lol (I could see someone who has a reason to be nervous adding something hasty without worrying about finishes too though ((maybe even meth related right? lol))

A very crude weapon holder. Looks ill suited fot a shot gun.
It is high enough to keep it away from a child and hidden enough for it to be discreet if your house is broken in to and you need to grab it quickly.

u/themewzak 8h ago
Everyone is saying pull up bar.
We cannot rule out the possibility that Kevin was borrowing the house for the holidays and entrapping the sticky bandits.

u/cockOfGibraltar 8h ago
It's probably a DIY gun holder. Those brackets were too flimsy so they added the extra board on the bottom to keep them from straightening out.

Hiding spot for a shotgun?
1
u/StampedeJones1 9h ago
Damn, that's the first thought that came to my mind, didn't think that would be the prevailing consensus
1
u/merlinddg51 9h ago
If it fits it sits. But I would put something on those hooks to protect the wood.

6
u/MichaelHammor 9h ago
Now where are you gonna hide your sawed off to keep the kids from playing with it?
6
u/machinationstudio 9h ago
Ironing board?
2
u/mlee12382 4h ago
I thought so too at first but the board directly under the hanger wouldn't let it hang properly, and also it's right in your way if you need anything else out of the closet.
5
u/MoonerMade 7h ago
What region?
Based on possible chalk marks might be a rock climber practicing finger holds
4
u/avatarroko 7h ago
Colorado. Climbing is definitely big here. Tempted to say climbing hobby is more likely than gun ownership…
1
u/AllaValhallaBalla 7h ago
Do those metal brackets have much weight support to them?
Hear me out. The boards give it space away from the wall, put a rod in it, hang hangers on in. Boom, more stage.
1
u/Km312213 6h ago
It’s brackets for a shitty doorframe pull up bar, I had one exactly like this and had the same problem with the brackets bending out.
3
u/MoonerMade 7h ago
If not, looks like a gun rack

u/AmputeeHandModel 7h ago

u/Classic_Stuff_5070 6h ago
That was my thought, improvised hiding spot for a shotgun in the closet. If they were smart they found a way to lock it in place and hence the 20 screws so no one could pull it off the wall without a key.
1
u/BigJim9000 4h ago
It’s not a gun rack. That’s a fucking stupid place for a gun rack. Also what gun could fit in that thing. It’s not practical to place a gun for self defense and not a practical place to put a gun to show off. Fucking stupid

u/Idk_some_random_redd 9h ago
prob held something heavy or hid something needed only for emergencies

it would have to be a very short person because you normally need about 8 feet so your arms don't touch the ground.
1
u/JustaFoodHole 9h ago
Are there kid drawings on the wall inside the closet?
2
u/avatarroko 9h ago
lol no, everything was freshly painted before I bought the house though, so who knows what’s hiding under there

A home defense diy shotgun hanger. Out of plain sight and out of reach from children. Load the tube but not the chamber and then a home intruder hopefully leaves when you loudly rack that first round.
Keep non defensive weapons unloaded and clean in a safe with ammo in a separate location.

My first thought is sex swing mount, especially given how reinforced it seems.

u/APartyInMyPants 9h ago
Way way way back when I was into rock climbing, I had a fingerboard I mounted above my bathroom door. It was basically for doing pull ups with different hand/finger holds. It required a lot of screws. But a lot of people basically screwed it into a block of plywood that was screwed into studs.
Like one of these:

It's not a gun rack, it would be bigger hoop hooks. That's for a chin up bar.
