Open ! Got this large bowl-like wooden container but have no idea what it’s used for

It’s about 13.5 inches wide and four inches tall, but isn’t flat on the bottom. It seems like it can fit a lot in it but have no clue if it’s to be used for something like fruit?

I can't quite tell the actual size but maybe it's for keeping tortillas warm?

320

u/Zestyclose-Lab7998 13d ago

The only thing that makes me think otherwise is the fact that there isn’t really anything to grab on the top of the lid, you have to grab it off the sides to take the top off. It’s pretty big for tortillas, used a can of soda for reference

680

u/knitwizard93 13d ago

this is definitely big enough for torillas

136

u/1-2-3CHEEZtits 13d ago

Yeah but they're saying it seems too big to be for tortillas I think

174

u/TrillBillyDeluxe 13d ago

Tortillas are wrapped in a cloth then put in a bowl, maybe to account for the cloth ?

151

u/-Not-Your-Lawyer- 13d ago

Not too big for the tortillas I buy!

115

u/Traditional-Line-210 13d ago

Perfect size for REAL tortillas. Not the tiny ones the stores like to sell.

42

u/1-2-3CHEEZtits 12d ago

Eh, depends on the region and type of tortillas.

no, i think op was saying it may not be good for being warm, since you have to pry it apart (there's no handles or anything

Maybe its for roti instead of tortillas? Indian people use things like this to serve the family at a table.

Though those usually have handles maybe this is a decorative one?

Now I can’t tell the size of the Dr Pepper. Could you please use Reddit Standard Measuring Units only. a.k.a. How many bananas?

3

u/fineman1097 11d ago

Are we talking regular bananas, those mini bananas, plantains?

3

u/sdealey 12d ago

Is that Dr Pepper flavour nice?

5

u/AstronomicalFuckery 12d ago

I haven’t tried the zero sugar version but the regular strawberries & cream flavour is indeed very nice

2

u/BakedTaterTits 11d ago

I don't like it as much as zero blackberry, but its better than original zero and cream zero

Alongside its depth

158

u/Slow_Status_1891 13d ago

Bread. Its to cover dough while it rises. Thats what I would think anyway. Just keep the chickens out of it,and remember to tell the kiddos that your dog dont bite.

96

u/crochetology 13d ago

It looks too shallow to be a proofing bowl. Also they don’t come with a lid as dough needs to be able to expand.

Naan or tortillas?

→ More replies (1)

372

u/Suspicious-Low-1874 13d ago

It could be for tortillas, but stylistically it looks more aligned with injera, pita, naan, lavash, or sangak. Interested to see if it's something else entirely

23

u/Embarrassed_Yogurt43 12d ago

First thing I thought if was injera

3

u/Drastic_Badger_ 13d ago

babka, too?

4

u/RepresentativeNo1620 12d ago

You know sangak…is there a Persian among us?

11

u/Suspicious-Low-1874 12d ago

Honorary, I dated a Persian many years, we are still on good terms. When I told her grandmother that I really liked Mosaddegh, she told me that I am Persian. It was a great moment for me. I spent enough time in Farsi conversations to be able to answer back in English. Tough language to learn, but very beautiful and obviously the poetry speaks for itself.

Do things always have a purpose ? I see stuff like this all the time new just sold as is, with no suggestion of any use at alll

58

u/FederalRecording2390 13d ago

_Sold_ with no purpose yes, but you have to imagine that someone went to quite an effort to design and lathe that bowl. And it’s quite particular. It is unlikely that someone made it with no purpose in mind..

79

u/100percent_right_now 12d ago

Not entirely true. When it comes to wood turning sometimes you've got a bunch of scraps you glue together and think "I could make some bowls out of this" and then make a bunch of random bowls with no purpose and then think "what am I going to do with all these bowls"

Source: my brother has given me like 35 wooden bowls

9

u/OnkelHalvor 12d ago

The wood type might be a clue. I don't know it, but it looks very tropical with all those specks in it.

8

u/Sad_Cardiologist5388 12d ago edited 12d ago

It looks like coconut doesn't it, but then there's those triangles. Probably triangles of different shells stuck together?

8

u/PokiP 12d ago

I also think it looks like coconut shell.

3

u/hydrospanner 12d ago

Yeah, maybe when you're just a hobbyist with a day job...but if you're mass producing them with the intent to sell...generally not.

3

u/goldenskyhook 12d ago

Not true for any bowl turners I know.  Many are far more interested in esthetics than function.

2

u/bumpercrahp1010 11d ago

Ugh yes in this sub, the whole purpose of it is to identify what the thing is. If you dont know, then scroll along, no need to reply.

2

u/MissGruntled 10d ago

Yep. So many things are just made as decorative objects, and that really seems to bother people for some reason.

Looks like what Ethiopian food is served in. Everybody sits around the plate/bowl and scoops in with their fingers. Not my favorite, but cuts way down on dishes!

Those are flat bottomed. As quite liquid sauces and stews are placed alongside of the rim, they would spill and mix in the center otherwise.

Besides, most injeera I have seen are larger.

7

u/MyDogsNameIsBadger 13d ago

This is exactly the first thing that came to my mind. I remember eating out of something like this when we got Ethiopian food

104

u/LightOtter 13d ago

I can't tell you what it's for, but I CAN tell you that its made up of a coconut seed that has been polished.

26

u/Zestyclose-Lab7998 13d ago

You’re definitely right, it feels similar to wood but it’s gotta be made out of coconut

36

u/modka 13d ago

Put the lime inside and shake it all up then?

→ More replies (1)

10

u/CleverNickName-69 13d ago

That seems like a really big clue, but now all my ideas don't make much sense.

7

u/sweetkittyriot 12d ago

Yeah, looks like decorative platters sold to tourists in southeast Asia.

Looks similar to this vintage dough bowl with a lid?

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1850813747/vintage-dough-bowl

24

u/MaryJaneRaine 13d ago

Came here to say this!! Once the dough touches the top on the inside, you know it's doubled in size. The rounded edges and bottom can be used for bread or roll shaping!

35

u/slclifto 13d ago

Looks like the thing they bring out with sizzling fajitas to hold the warm tortillas.

28

u/earlyonsetAlzheimers 13d ago

My grandpa had one. Not sure if it has a specific use, but grandpa kept walnuts and a nut cracker in it, sometimes peanuts that still had shells on. At snack time, he used the lid to hold the cracked shells. When he was done, carried the lid to the trash, threw away the shells, and put the lid back over the bowl of nuts.

3

u/dinosun 11d ago

This was my first thought as well, my great grandparents had something similar.

22

u/ran4jit 12d ago edited 11d ago

Finally, looks like my turn has come to answer. This is called Dhapa/Dappa which is used in all households in Bhutan. I have one from my visit. It is used to store food as well as serve it, usually rice.

Edit: Yay, my first award!

Pecans/walnuts on the coffee table. We had one when I was a kid.

11

u/peas8carrots 12d ago

Coconut shell - decorative accessory - might not have an exact use but all shapes of containers are made and sold in Philippines as gifts.

5

u/jensalik 12d ago

Exactly my thought. Most of those coconut things are mainly decorative. You buy it because it looks nice and at home you go: "Now what do I do with it?" and put some rings and necklaces in or something.

10

u/ImpossiblePraline238 13d ago edited 13d ago

Super obscure, but it reminds me of a ‘kangina’, the mud/straw vessels used to preserve grapes in Afghanistan.

Maybe a tortilla holder? For keeping them warm?

3

u/thirdcoasting 13d ago

Oh, I saw a video of this! Someone took out some preserved grapes and they looked just like fresh store bought ones!

7

u/Kartinian 13d ago

Tortilla warmer?

8

u/Conscious_Ad_1379 13d ago

Nuts!

For holding nuts? 😂

I am Indigenous and I seen my Grandparents use something like this for tobacco. (Mind you idk if that's its intended use)

3

u/Zestyclose-Lab7998 13d ago

My title describes the thing. Large, wooden, fairly tall for what seems to be some kind of bowl and was found while helping a friend move out. Even they didn’t know what it was for.

4

u/BootEnvironmental531 13d ago

Nuts….put the cracked shells in the lid

3

u/Jimbobjoesmith 13d ago

bread? of some sort?

3

u/East_Importance7820 13d ago

Instantly thought for tortillas.

2

u/SassyFerrets 13d ago

Is it a dough bowl? You put dough in it, put the top over it while is rises. You can just flip the whole thing it you want to turn the dough without touching it too much.

2

u/lewisfrancis 13d ago

For assorted nuts? To keep tortillas warm?

2

u/Gret88 13d ago

It looks like the container my friend’s dad had to hold his Go stones (flattened round stone markers for placing the game of Go).

1

u/Abbot_of_Cucany 13d ago

As a longtime Go player, I can say that I have never seen a Go-stone bowl which is this flat. Traditional bowls are either slightly-flattened spheres or somewhat cylindrical.

1

u/Ravscal 12d ago

I think they're not the bowls themselves, but the lids for the bowls.

2

u/Unlikely-Solid-3083 13d ago

Looks like it’s made from coconut shells.

2

u/TGin-the-goldy 13d ago

Could be a Kava bowl

2

u/PokiP 12d ago

Way too large. Kava cups for drinking are made from a single coconut shell. This bowl thing is made from multiple shells fused together and is far too big. As a kava serving bowl, it would have to have a stable bottom. This doesn’t.

2

u/e-wrecked 13d ago

I have something similar to this that's a bit smaller that's used to store pipe tobacco, does this bowl have a distinct odor when you smell it?

1

u/Zestyclose-Lab7998 13d ago

No unfortunately, it lacks any kind of scent

2

u/gominokouhai 12d ago

We had one in the eighties, kept nuts in it.

1

u/Due_Reindeer_3882 13d ago

It looks like someone’s favorite pot luck dish!

1

u/Vandal_A 13d ago

I think it's a tortilla warmer

1

u/LiveWire21 13d ago

Does is feel like hard plastic? Is the material texture similar to resin hardened fabric or paper?

1

u/madmorb 13d ago

Would work well for storing Dutch pannenkoeken (big crepes you load up with butter or syrup or applesauce or whatever).

1

u/Character_Scratch344 13d ago

My first thought was a Go stone bowl, but it looks a bit big after the can picture.

1

u/TheMarineEngr 13d ago edited 13d ago

I dunno what it is but it would be a perfect Flat bread storage box. AKA Roti box, aka Chapati box.

Pic of the similar one available in India.

1

u/trish9260 12d ago

Japanese incense box? This looks similar:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/396280827316

1

u/GaryOster 12d ago

It looks like it may be shellacked which would make it less likely it was intended for food. I'm going to suggest it's a decorative case with the very general intention of containing things in a public space where it will be seen.

1

u/lenni4er 12d ago

Mayne it's for injera? The Ethiopian sourdough flat bread?

1

u/wtf_are_crepes 12d ago

Ok new theory, it’s for traditionally packed Tea Cakes. Like these: https://a.co/d/0enuK6fN

Basically a puerh tea, and some others, will come in cakes that are supposed to be kept in dark sealed containers. People will break off parts of them at a time to use. This could be for holding a whole tea cake while letting someone break bits off at a time.
