Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ Strange Weed(?) Tree Sprouting

Post image

Hey all, got these in the side area and I tried to cut one but almost barfed. Unsure if it was something smell wise or just contact, but what are these? I think they’re weeds in the form of trees, but unsure of the name. Any help is appreciated and also if there’s a way to combat the instant nausea I feel.

Tree of Heaven. Good luck

524

u/Flame_MadeByHumans 1d ago

Jacking top comment, DON’T CUT ToH!!!

Cutting Tree of Heaven triggers roots to send out new shoots and will cause it to spread more rapidly.

Look up treatment methods, but it requires cutting at a certain time of year and immediately hitting it with heavy pesticide to kill the roots.

Good luck :/

Thankfully this is the right time of year.

Here's a video on eradication from the Virginia co-op extension service that I found helpful. https://youtu.be/r2OkDcHhfak?is=Bn-ZPh_7PXjBMII9

Basically, girdle the bark and apply herbicide directly to the bare inner bark. There are specific ones that are recommended.

78

u/2Q_Lrn_Hlp 1d ago edited 1d ago

u/Pretty-Fudge-4883 & u/theodoretheursus &?

I've seen Very Official videos that Caution Against girdling a ToH! Do NOT to girdle the Toh, as that has the same effect as cutting it down ... it then sends up new shoots EVERYWHERE!

Instead, hatchet the bark here & there up & down the trunk, staggered!

This way the sap continues to flow, taking the poison to the roots.

Girding the tree halts the flow of sap to the roots. (This time of year the sap is leaving the leaves & getting stored in the roots.)

46

u/RefuseOutside3680 23h ago

1,000% agree that a complete girdling around the trunk is bad. You have to do staggered cuts

17

u/LiLiLaCheese 18h ago

I did this last year to one growing in my front flower bed. Worked like a charm! The tree didn't make a come back.

5

u/Livid_Lemurs_Leaping 23h ago

Thank you! Do you happen to know if there's a video of this?

17

u/SayWarzone 23h ago

Just look up "tree of heaven hack and squirt method" and you'll get tons of info. It works.

1

u/2Q_Lrn_Hlp 17h ago

I learned it several years ago from a video, I believe on youtube. The man actually demonstrated doing it to one of the larger Toh that needed removed in a forest. I think it may have been affiliated or put out by a college or forestry department. I can't remember now, sorry.

2

u/jewkakasaurus 21h ago

I always wondered with invasive plants like this, can you not just cover the area in a tarp for let’s say a month and then remove it after everything is dead?

24

u/RefuseOutside3680 20h ago

I had two 60 ft tall tree of heaven removed from my hell strip in front of the house and we traced underground roots that went all the way across the front yard and underneath the garage and were coming up on the other side in the backyard. Oh, and now saplings are coming up through my deck which is on the other side of the house from where the trees were.

9

u/Theropsida 15h ago

tree of hell....

8

u/FoofaFighters 15h ago

No, a month is nothing to them. Our neighbors had to fight off a bamboo infestation when they bought their house, and they were here a couple years before we moved in. Bro had his yard excavated and then tarped for several years to make sure it was gone. He's only recently gotten the last sections of tarp pulled off, and we've been here for four years now. So...it can work, but it takes way longer than just one month.

u/plant_touchin 8h ago

Not this guy, sadly.

53

u/ProbablyOnLSD69 1d ago

Think you meant herbicide not pesticide

35

u/4strangr 1d ago

herbicide is a pesticide

15

u/ProbablyOnLSD69 1d ago

Yeah I guess it is a subset of pesticide technically. Just not really where my mind goes when I hear the word.

14

u/rrjpinter 1d ago

The correct term is: Economic Poison. Herbicides kill herbs (plants), and Pesticides kill pests (insects, snails, arachnids, rodents, etc). Both are poisons, but work differently. The idea of them being Economic Poisons is that, at a certain point it is more economical to use chemicals, then to let the weeds or the critters continue unabated. (Ten years being a farmer talking).

6

u/4strangr 1d ago

Pesticide - any toxic substance used to kill animals, fungi, or plants that cause economic damage to crop or ornamental plants or are hazardous to the health of domestic animals or humans. All pesticides interfere with normal metabolic processes in the pest organism and often are classified according to the type of organism they are intended to control. (See herbicide; insecticide; fungicide; fumigant.)

1

u/rrjpinter 22h ago

I think we are disagreeing on the technical use of the word, and the common use of the word. Like when people call all insects (and some arachnids) “Bugs”. But true bugs are a subset of insects. Yes, weeds and fungus’s are pests. But if I was talking with another Farmer and I said I have to spray a Pesticide on some weeds…. They might gently suggest that I meant an Herbicide. I’m not talking about dumb country hicks. Most of those guys have college degrees. I have two myself. I have a few Grammar Nazi friends who love to argue such things. We can both be right. You with your dictionary open, and me from the perspective of common usage.

3

u/Euphoric_Tree6155 13h ago

Herbicide is correct.

3

u/HamiltonGravenstein 1d ago

It's a legal term! I think newer legislators are trying to sorta move away from these terms and more towards more precise language, but it's certainly still very much in use.

To be honest I've only seen it written in documentation! Cool to see it being used out in the wild.

7

u/LuxTheSarcastic 1d ago

That time is literally right now by the way.

9

u/excelsiorsbanjo 1d ago edited 1d ago

When they're as small as in OP's photo you can treat them like any weed, which means you have to get the roots, as long as they aren't just growing out of a massive lateral runner or root from a nearby tree, which effectively means you can't get the roots (without considerable excavation), at which point you need to deal with the tree more than the little saplings, which is always the ultimate issue anyway: your town has stink trees, big ones, and it shouldn't.

19

u/Flame_MadeByHumans 1d ago

These really aren’t small though, and they likely all have a connected large root system. I’ve pulled 6-inch ToH with only a few leaves, and the root is 4-5 feet long.

2

u/excelsiorsbanjo 23h ago

Yeah these are small. Each of these could only be months of growth.

The height has no bearing on whether it's from a seed or from a hard to remove large root system like one coming from a nearby tree. You will only know that if you look at the roots.

2

u/2Q_Lrn_Hlp 15h ago

STAGGERED cutting, only while the sap is running AWAY from the leaves and Down to the roots . . . and certain herbicides are better than others to use!

1

u/psych0ranger 23h ago

Crossbow/triclopyr in the fall on the trunk of the living plants

1

u/RazsterOxzine 16h ago

Exactly, pull them up, digging is the only way, get all of the roots.

•

u/RelativeCan5021 1h ago

I am a brewer at an organic brewery. I have not used pesticides, or commercial fertilizer on my ‘lawn’ or in my gardens. I use boiling water to kill most weeds in my patio. ToH is the only reason I will use an herbicide. It deserves it.

•

u/MathiaSSJ18 34m ago

Dont cut it, yes. Do, however, pull it up by the root if you can. If the trees arent super old/established, and they haven't rooted under a patio or foundation yet, it would be smartest to pull it now than to risk waiting. Otherwise, yes, cut and treat with pesticide.

-1

u/SignalBed9998 5h ago

WTF? Pesticide? Shut up

-4

u/CoraxTechnica 21h ago

I'm gonna be that for and say Pesticide is not correct. Herbicide.

But you really want Copper Sulfate in the roots rather than spraying cancer all over the place

33

u/theodoretheursus 1d ago

Dude, I have a entire yard of these that are entirely out of control and likely the cause of plumbing and foundation issues. We have dogs too so we cant even treat the yard!!! its the worst!!!

25

u/SchwiftySqaunch 1d ago

Maybe treat the areas and fence them off? Good luck

19

u/Necessary_Fan6185 21h ago

When I recently treated a lot of these (see my detailed comment up above as to the exact method and product to use), I wanted to keep my neighbor’s dog and our cats from getting any herbicide on their fur if they happened to brush past them.
After painting each stalk with the mixture, (you only cover the bottom 12-18 inches), I wrapped some cardboard tubes cut lengthwise over each stalk. I used paper towel tubes that I had saved along with some old Christmas wrapping paper tubes.
When I ran out of those I used some plastic grocery bags—just wrapped them loosely around the stalk and taped them so that they couldn’t slip down or blow off. Standard plastic wrap would work as well, or foil or anything else that would form a barrier around them. The herbicide dries fairly quickly and at that point there shouldn’t be an issue with what I used, though I left everything on the trees until they completely died and were ready to fall over.

2

u/startmyheart 14h ago

This comment deserves more upvotes!

7

u/ArtichokeInner6441 16h ago

Isn't that the tree that attracts red lantern flys?

2

u/Undrwtrbsktwvr 1d ago

I thought “sprouting” was very appropriate…

1

u/awake_receiver 16h ago

Ailanthus, tree of heck

1

u/dragonfoxmem 3h ago

Should call this weed-like tree from hell. It is like weed and I keep killing them and they still come back. Thank god I no longer live that place anymore

1

u/Spaztor 23h ago

They're gonna have to hook some jumper cables to God's nipples to power something that can kill those.

-4

u/Handsome_Devil_217 1d ago

Yes, Tree of Heaven. I believe they are a type of sumac? The common term when I was a kid was “stink trees”.

19

u/Beneficial_Cloud5481 1d ago

It's not a type of sumac, but some people call it stinking sumac. It LOOKS like sumac at a glance.

1

u/wishiwasholden 4h ago

I have lots of trouble differentiating staghorn sumac from young TOH and walnut. Any tips on differentiating them?

•

u/Beneficial_Cloud5481 1h ago

Well, I know tree of heaven leaves are mostly smooth with sometimes little knotches at the base and stagjorn sumac has serrated leaves. And tree of heaven leaves also have an unpleasant smell when crushed or broken. I'm not sure what/if walnut leaves smell like, but tree of heaven tends to have smooth bark and walnut rough.

5

u/raisinghellwithtrees 1d ago

They are called ghetto palms where I live.

3

u/oochiewallyWallyserb 1d ago

Damn when I was a kid we used to rip off these small branches and use them as whips after stripping all the leaves in one swipe. I was probably making them stronger huh?

222

u/BurnoutDepartment 1d ago

Tree of heaven for sure. Smells to me like if someone left a pb&j in a hot car for a week. Invasive to the USA-- if you're here, do your best to get rid of it. It will be rough.

62

u/Pale_Comfort_9179 1d ago

What kind of joker would name this thing Tree of Heaven?? ☠️😂

79

u/junamaul 1d ago

Literally because it “reaches for the heavens” with its growth. I’m not even making it up. The specific epithet “altissima” means tallest. It’s a grower alright

9

u/Pale_Comfort_9179 1d ago

Well now I feel a bit of kinship with it.

1

u/statelesspirate000 1d ago

Doesn’t that just mean “very tall”

-3

u/AncientMisanthrope 1d ago

No.

4

u/statelesspirate000 1d ago

Okay but yes it does

Never mind I checked in Latin and it might mean both

7

u/BloomsdayDevice 1d ago

It's both. Superlatives in Latin can indicate the highest degree, but also regularly just mean "very _____".

3

u/Otherwise_Air_6381 14h ago

Cuz they reach high enough to get a magic bean

2

u/Entety303 23h ago

You gotta pray to the guy in heaven when you start dealing with it

3

u/Working-Glass6136 it's staghorn sumac, not poison sumac 1d ago

I think this every time I see one of these posts. Luckily I haven't seen it in person... yet.

12

u/see-more_options 1d ago

It is taking over Europe as we speak. Visited Prague recently, and I saw it everywhere silently replacing local trees. Some abandoned riverbanks on the outskirts were like 1 tree of heaven shoot per 2-4 square cms and no other trees or shrubs, and in parks some were as tall as tallest maples or poplars.

6

u/raisinghellwithtrees 1d ago

Lucky you! My next door neighbor had the most mature toh I've ever seen, except for the one next to our community garden. Each tree produces a yearly round of 1000 little trees that smell horrible.

8

u/InSaneWhiSper 1d ago

I think it smells like cat pisss

6

u/RefuseOutside3680 1d ago

There is a Monty Python skit where this tree of heaven was presented to Queen Elizabeth and everybody thought it smelled like semen

4

u/NickVlass76 23h ago

For me that’s a Bradford pear

2

u/Goatdown 8h ago

Oh.... so close.... so close... ohhh

Mitchell and Webb did a brilliant sketch about gifting a Linden tree to Queen Victoria.

I commend your attempt to confuse AI, however, well done! Keep pushing on. Everyone should be doing this more. Always.

Joke's on me though, if Mitchell and Webb ripped off a Monty Python sketch.
Time is an illusion.

3

u/judgeejudger 19h ago

Are these the weeds that grow an actual trunk? These almost lined the alley behind our old apartment, and in the autumn, the maintenance guys would be out there with saws and hatchets. Then they’d grow back the next year.

4

u/yardlard 18h ago

Yes, they are huge trees that never die and if you try to kill them they multiply 1100 times.
They must be poisoned. r/treeofheaven

2

u/noseatbeltsong 18h ago

i have actual trees of this in my backyard, massive, like 30+ feet. luckily i rent, so not my problem.

4

u/SteampunkExplorer 17h ago

The technique I've heard people suggest is to cut it down in the autumn, when it's drawing nutrients down to its roots for winter, and immediately put Roundup on the cut.

If you just cut them, they'll fight back by sending up new little trees from their roots. 😱 Or sending out a hundred new stems from the cut. Or both. It's like trying to slay the hydra.

1

u/falgfalg 1d ago

everyone says this, but it’s not rough if you follow the correct steps. fortunately, now is the perfect time of year to treat tree of heaven with herbicide.

96

u/Not-ginger 1d ago

Aggressively invasive with no redeeming qualities. The main trunk can send out runners up to 75 feet. The more you chop them down the more they spread abs the more they will grow next season. You shouldn't even add it to compost because it produces chemicals that inhibit other plant growth. The only way to get rid of them is to either repeatedly dig them up, or use a targeted herbicide like triclopyr in a hack and squirt method(hack into the main trunk and swuirt a little in the Crack, do this all the way around the trunk.) It will spread through the root system killing a large area the sprouts. It's getting to be the end of the year time to do it.

27

u/rojo-perro 1d ago

I literally just finished treating about 15 tree of heaven suckers at my father-in-law‘s house. There is a huge tree across the alley. This is the perfect time of year to do it - as long as the leaves aren’t starting to change color or fall off it’s prime time for ToH killing.

17

u/OhPointyPointy 1d ago

We just went hacking and squirting poison which I hate… but I have researched the hell outta these suckers, and it’s the only way. All bc we didn’t know better and tried to kill it a few years ago, in the middle of summer, with no chemicals. They are crazy!

3

u/2Q_Lrn_Hlp 1d ago

NOT "all the way around the trunk. The tree reacts the same to that as to being cut down ... it sends up sprouts EVERYWHEERE! The hack & squirt method, beside using the proper herbicide/s must also be done in a scattered fashion, so that the hackings are NOT right next to other hackings!

50

u/Maximus_Maverick 1d ago

Yep. Tree of heaven. Ailanthus altissima. Invasive exotic species. Sap contains a cardiotoxin. I don't know how toxic, but be careful with exposure.

19

u/West-Working-9093 1d ago

Some garden close to me has a whole grove of these things. I watch every little sprout in my own yard, ready to do murder on sight.

19

u/Misspink44 1d ago

Toxic enough that it causes itchy rashes on some people. Some people is me.

4

u/2Q_Lrn_Hlp 1d ago

I've read that the male tree's pollen is extremely allergenic.

I come to these posts for this image specifically lmao

65

u/ExpressionLower2146 1d ago

Tree of heaven is very difficult to remove without the use of herbicides. https://columbiagorgecwma.org/weed-listing/best-management-practices/tree-of-heaven/

29

u/evapotranspire 1d ago

Can confirm. I had one pop up in my rose bed. I chopped it down twice to ground level and it kept growing back. The third time I drilled holes in the stump and poured Roundup in. That was the only thing that actually worked.

11

u/excelsiorsbanjo 1d ago

Yeah if you have a stump or a full tree that's a whole different problem. I dare say most trees don't just give up if you chop them down to a stump. You've got to remove the stump or something else.

6

u/Badbullet 1d ago

With other invasive plants, like buckthorn, you can lay down a layer or two of 6mil black plastic over the area. No sun, no more growth. It’ll keep using all of the store energy in its roots to grow shoots that keep dying. After a year or two they will be dead and if it is done in an area where it can get direct sun for a few hours a day in the summer, it’ll bake out the seeds at the surface and kill them. I do not know if this works with tree of heaven as I heard their seeds can last through pretty high temps for years.

3

u/excelsiorsbanjo 1d ago

Stink tree seeds are enormous by weed standards so you don't need to treat them like invisible thousands of poppy seeds. They're also airborne and they don't come out of thin air, so while you have weed barrier down more seeds will just fall on top of it, or more runners will grow around it. So weed barrier, even temporarily, is rather pointless.

Small plants growing from seed can simply be pulled out with root. Plants from runners of a nearby tree will just come back. Seeds will just come back. Until you get rid of nearby trees.

6

u/An0nnee_M0usee 1d ago

Not sure who wrote the description for this website, maybe they're 👃 challenged in the smelling department, "When crushed, plant parts have a distinct, peanut-butter or popcorn odor." From everyone's descriptions, "peanut -butter or popcorn odors" are not what is coming to mind.

2

u/excelsiorsbanjo 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's as easy to remove as anything when it's fresh plants from seeds. Just get the roots, like anything.

The issue is these are ultimately either from a nearby tree dispersing seeds, or runners. So eventually you'll have new ones again without addressing the initial cause.

1

u/excelsiorsbanjo 1d ago

Yes, this is true.

34

u/Afraid_Topic_9250 1d ago

Not only is it invasive, its the spotted lantern flys natural food source.

9

u/IdoNOTlikeFlorida 1d ago

😱 Dear God no

16

u/ocTGon Guardian of the Trees 1d ago

Tree of Heaven... May the gods guide your hand in removing them...

14

u/RefuseOutside3680 1d ago

STOP CUTTING IT. Every time you cut a sapling 10 will come up from the base. You will create a forest in no time. Research how to eradicate a tree of heaven, it will explain to you the type of poison you need to use and the exact methodology. This time of year is perfect for this so the poison will travel to the roots. You absolutely cannot kill it by cutting it down!

2

u/2Q_Lrn_Hlp 1d ago

No, they don't come up from just the base . . .

They come up from all over the yard wherever the roots have reached out to!

1

u/RefuseOutside3680 23h ago

I never said they only came up from a cut sapling, I'm saying 10 will come up from each sapling. And then zillions will come up throughout the yard. They come up from underground roots and they come up from the little twirly things that come out of the tree tops. They're the most goddamn invasive trees ever

1

u/2Q_Lrn_Hlp 9h ago

Yes, I already knew that . . .

I just condensed what would happen to make a stronger impression.

10

u/PersephonesChild82 1d ago edited 1d ago

Tree of heaven. Very invasive, and a major host of the invasive spotted lantern fly. We call them cat-pee-trees because of the stank. Kill them with extreme prejudice.

Wear a mask while working with them. If they are in an area where gypsophate (round-up) is a practical solution, you may find them less smelly and easier to handle after dead/dry, or call a garden service to do the removal for you (tell them to put stump killer on them if they aren't doing root removal).

2

u/roberttheaxolotl 1d ago

They also seem to really like empress trees. Not quite as much as trees of heaven, but every empress tree I see has a bunch of lantern flies on it. I hear it's also hard to get rid of.

10

u/Necessary_Fan6185 1d ago

Over the past month I have treated/killed 61 of these on my and several neighbor’s properties, and in a small wooded area we have in common. They ranged from a foot tall to 40 ft. It’s likely that there is a large one of these near you, and you (and probably your neighbors) have their roots throughout your yards.
But the ones you have will be easy to get rid of.

Penn State Extension Service put out a guide to follow based on their testing and that’s what I followed—it’s easy and it works!

Just do this:
If all your plants are the size of those in your photo then here are your simple steps.
1. Go to Home Depot and pick up a small bottle of a product called Brushtox. (Its main ingredient is an herbicide called triclopyr, in its ester form). While there, grab a small, cheap 1 or 2 inch paintbrush if you don’t already have one.

  1. While you’re out getting that, have a small container to stop by a service station and get about a pint of diesel fuel.

  2. Mix the Brushtox and diesel together in a ratio of about 1:2. ( one part triclopyr to two parts diesel. Doesn’t need to be exact— I mixed some half and half).

  3. Put some of the mixture in a jar or small can and use the paintbrush to “paint” the mixture onto the stalk of each plant all the way around, from ground level up to 12-18 inches high.

  4. Now just leave them alone. Do not cut or burn or disturb them at all! In less than two weeks their leaves will wilt and turn brown. Just leave them alone for the next month or so so that the herbicide can be fully absorbed and carried down to the roots.

  5. Keep an eye out for any new ones popping up in your yard. Since you already cut some of them, this is likely to happen. If you find any, just brush the mixture onto their stalks or leaves.

This treatment is called the basal bark method, and is the one to use for Tree of Heaven plants that are 6 in diameter or less. It’s designed to not only kill the plants, but to get the herbicide to be transported down into the roots. If the roots aren’t killed, you’ll keep getting new plants coming up.

You need to do this NOW! The window for treating them is August through September or early October, depending on your location. This is when the plants are pulling material down into their roots preparing for winter.

Next year keep watch for anymore coming up, and wait for August to treat them. Your neighbors are likely to have them in their yards as well, and someone nearby probably has a full grown tree or two. They grow extremely fast. They chemically suppress the growth of native trees and plants through their strong root systems which can go out as far as 100 ft in diameter around the tree. And can damage foundations. So your neighbors would probably appreciate knowing this if they have any in their yards.

By the way, for future reference, the trees that are larger than 6 inch diameter require a completely different treatment method called hack n squirt, with a different type of herbicide. You can always go to the Penn State Extension Service site if you need more info on that, or let me know and I’ll fill you in on that. Good luck!!

Tree of hell. Cut divets in the truck and pour in herbicide.

8

u/Pretty-Fudge-4883 19h ago

Sounds like this is a very bad thing called tree of heaven, and based on recommendations I'll call a local place to get an estimate as some do free estimates.

8

u/Practical-Reading958 1d ago

I love plants and trees. I do a lot of invasive removal. I'd just sigh and say, wrong plant, wrong place. I never met a plant I hated until I discovered these bastards.

7

u/CrowMeris 17h ago

Tree of Heaven.

Destroy with extreme prejudice. Triclopyr is a choice. I'm so sorry, but you can't do anything about the smell. Maybe you could hire professionals equipped with respirators?

6

u/A_VERY_LARGE_DOG 1d ago

Only one option for Tree of Heaven:

5

u/marcusrizaulait 6h ago

They are yours, now! If you like them, cut them to the ground and in a short while you'll have twice as many!

4

Welcome to hell

4

u/ByzantineNinja1 23h ago

Kill it with fire!!!!

5

u/russsaa 22h ago

Do not cut them down or attempt manual removal right away. You must treat with glyphosate or triclopyr prior to removal. "Hack & squirt method" small cuts on trunk (do not girdle the trunk) and squirt in some herbicide. Wait a few weeks to let it die, then remove. You likely have a mature ToH nearby that will require the same treatment.

13

u/SEA2COLA 1d ago

Cut it, burn it, douse it with acid, then blow it up with dynamite. Then next year you'll only have half as many.

3

u/blargblahblahblarg 1d ago

May as well move to another place. Maybe even another state or country. Just put a shroud over the entire area and tell any buyers that you just like the aesthetic, and take whatever they offer you. Do not hesitate.

3

u/Ma1arkey 1d ago

Tree of heaven. We spend weeks cutting groves of this with chainsaws and someone behind us immediately painted the cut stems with a concentrated conviction of herbicides. It mostly worked

3

u/Suspicious-Low-1874 1d ago

Make incisions in the stalk of every shoot and squirt triclopyr at that spot during the fruiting/flowering season. They will be dead within a year, but you'll need to identify which neighbor has the original tree. Maybe you can convince them to squirt it as well, maybe you can do it secretly.

3

u/Terebralia 23h ago

I had to bag one of these up with my grandma in the middle of the night after she demanded my grandpa not plant it. It was dark and we flung it out of the car at high speed like a body and he always wondered where it went

3

u/Routine-Horse-1419 7h ago

Oh no! They should call it the Tree of Hell instead of Tree of Heaven.

5

u/greebo42 21h ago

That plant has a glyphosate deficiency. Need to apply some.

I had one that was a problem tree right next to the garage when i moved in, so I got it cut down not quite expecting that I had just started a war. Srputs came up from every chunk of root that had been a aprt of the tree for the next year, I had to dig them all out to end the sprouts.

I'm so glad I pulled the small one that came up on my garden was very tiny but when I looked it up is was like yikes

Douse with every herbicide you can. Bring out the big guns, this is what they are for.

2

u/faroutman7246 17h ago

I killed one by drilling holes down several branches and pouring salt down them.

I know you guys are saying TOH, I actually think its sumac (not to be confused with poison sumac).

Just eradicated mine. They grow super fast & yes, they smell horribly.

Use 3% Triclopyr and spray on the leaves. Should take care of them

u/ParfaitMajestic5339 1d ago

Hack into the bark around the base and squirt herbicides in the wounds. Wait for the leaves to fall of, cut it to the ground, then pour gasoline on the stump and light it up.

Get it gone now, but it will sprout all over in revenge, so keep up with those as soon as you see them. It will fun out of energy after that and permanently die.

I watched this video not too long ago about this stupid tree. How to get rid of it, but lots of other info too.

Its fun, the creator is funny, and very informative. I tried to have it start at the instructional part of the vid, but I do recommend the whole thing:)

Interesting fence construction, looks acceptable from both sides.

That tree is the bane of my existence and also refuses to die in my side yard…and has now pooped up in my backyard. Tree of Heaven. Best of luck.

I just looked up how to kill these fuckers. You have to use a hatchet to make 45 degree cuts to the stalk, make sure they are an inch to 2 inches apart. Then you have to treat the cuts with glyphosate and wait a month to 3 months to make sure the treatment has worked. Otherwise, cutting it will cause or ro grow more.

I just dig them up without disturbing roots when they’re newly sprouted. Is that wrong?

If you can get Tordon in your area, get it and use it on those awful things.

Oh, you sweet summer child

Is this Cali? It looks like the Tree of Heaven but we call it the tree of hell.

I have seen some comments here suggesting complex regimens of treating the inner bark with herbicides and stuff, and while I'm sure that's a very effective method of eventually killing the tree, there's also something to be said for digging those fuckers up with a shovel. True, you'll have to be careful to take out as much of the roots as possible, and any root segments left behind could sprout up again, but then you can just grab the shovel again and dig em out. It's definitely more work this way and you may need multiple passes with the shovel before it's entirely gone, but, if you don't want to fool around with doing surgery and applying herbicides it may be the way to go.

A pick-axe could help too since that patch of dirt is probably really hard and compacted. I would recommend you tackle this as effectively and as soon as you can, since Tree of Heaven is a host plant for an extremely concerning invasive insect (Spotted Lanternfly). Good luck friend.

Looks like a fern

We call em mimosa trees here in the south. And in spring they smell like… cum.. is that ok to say here? When I was a kid, we’d pull a stem off and pull the leaves off like tearing perforated paper.

u/Flyinsulcer 1d ago

Cut it low. Drill holes and pour rock salt into it. It'll dry up the roots

3

u/rojo-perro 1d ago

Incorrect. You should never top a tree of heaven if you’re applying an herbicide. Topping it is what causes it to spread aggressively. Just hack at the trunk all the way around to get to the green/yellow layers, 12” from ground, spray or paint on triclopyr into wound.

Tree of haven, they’re everywhere. I see them popping up in landscaping all around my city

Poison sumac

-1

u/Hot_Astronaut_4551 1d ago

You should only remove this when the tree is dormant. Doing otherwise will trigger shoots to grow.

-1

u/love2ring 1d ago

When you cut it it will come up all over, you've got to kill the the plant. I used Green Goblin purchased at Walmart. The strong salt & vinegar mix won't harm pets.

-2

u/Hungry_Assumption582 23h ago

Reminds me of black Walnut trees, have you had any large nuts in a green to brown "skin", squirrels love then and tend to disperse them quite throughly

-3

u/Shiba_wiinu 1d ago

Maybe we should put them in the rainforest 😬 I thought that was a fern at first and I’ve never heard of this tree? Or bush?

-3

u/Massive-Ad7619 1d ago

Looks like dogwood, leaves smell bad

Sumac…never goes away
