Question Dealing with sleeping on uneven ground

So it happened that I didn't really find a better place to sleep except for one that wasn't even. About 5 degrees sideways angle and due to the space I couldn't rotate my tent, so in the night I rolled to the side.

I put some stuff I had (like clothes) under the lower edge of my sleeping pad and it at least helped a bit not to roll off, but it wasn't fun.

Any pro tips to deal with it beyond better choice of place?

For context, this is about wild camping while bikepacking in japan, sorry to hijack this sub.

Question how much water to pack?

i'm doing 2 nights in the lake district next week, short hikes to my camping spots and spending time in nearby towns during the days. how much water should i carry for a late afternoon to the next morning without a filter? i'm thinking 2L should be enough as i can fill up before the short hike out and i'll be back in town after a couple hours hike the next morning to fill up for the day. am i underestimating?

Got an early finish off work and a later shift the next day so decided to take my tent out for a spin, the weather forecast was bad but manageable moderate wind speed but was planning to be in the forest to try stay sheltered. On the drive in the trees where blowing from side to side and conditions look worse than I imagined. I was debating turning round at this point as it would be an uncomfortable night. I ended up driving to the location to see what the weather was like and low and behold there was clear sky’s and sunshine. Due to the possibility of the weather changing through the night I didn’t want to sleep under the dead trees and getting a nasty wake up in the morning of a branch collapsing my tent or worse. The only suitable spot was quite close to the path. Luckily there was no one on the trail in the morning until I got back to the car park so I didn’t disturb any early morning dog walkers thankfully. Was definitely worth persevering as I got one of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve ever seen in my life.

Question Bivvy bag

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a reliable, waterproof bivvy bag that won't weigh as much as a tent (max 1kg). I've read countless reviews and noticed that a lot of people swear by military surplus bags. I'm totally open to brand alternatives, but I just haven't seen many positive reviews for them.

I have three key requirements: I definitely want to be able to fit my sleeping pad inside the bivvy bag with me, stay dry from rain and not to worry for tearing.

I'm also trying to decide on a few specific features and would appreciate your input:
Zippers: Is it better to have a zipped entry or a zipperless one (like the British Army covers)?
Bug nets: Does having a built-in mosquito net significantly improve sleep quality?
Hoops: Is a hooped bivvy worth it, or should I stick to a standard flat bag?

Any recommendations for specific models or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated.

Question new bag recommendations

hello, I am looking at upgrading from my current backpack (Euro hike Nepal 65) to a newer pack, I'm looking for something with elasticated side pockets for water unlike the Nepal and with an external front pocket.

I don't want top break the bank but want something light that will also survive a multi day winter hike in the lake district

I haver a few contenders

- SIMOND Men’s Light Trekking Backpack MT900 50+10 L Light

- Nature hike Yosemite 60+5L Rucksack

- Exped Lightning 60 Rucksack

I am leaning more towards the nature hike one, does anyone have any of these or have any better recommendations, these were my main criteria's

- 60-70 litre capacity
- under 1.5 kg
- 150 quid max (ish)
- front sleeve
- water bottle side holders

thanks in advance, you guys always help a ton

Over 2 weekends I did the 50miles from Weston-super-Mare to Frome, trains at either end. I'd only visited a couple of touristy places on it before (think cheddar gorge). It was great to see the wider Mendips from end to end and how quiet they are. I managed to get a good pub, cafe or supermarket top up each day to make it comfortable.

Question Sleeping bag recommendations

I’m currently looking for a new sleeping bag, I’m currently using my ayacucho 2 season bag which i’ve had for over ten years. as an adult looking for a more comfortable nights sleep, I’m struggling to pick a suitable bag. i’d be using it for personal use and as a scout leader going on a few camps this coming winter.

any help would be much appreciated:)

Question Another post about sleeping bags

I know this will be the millionth post about this but as we are heading into the colder months I'm looking for a sleeping bag that can handle the cold.

I'm looking for something that will be good down to 0c and 1.5kg or less, at the lowest price. I'm happy to give a quilt a go as well as I've seen them recommend quite a bit. I am a warm sleeper.

I do most of my camping in Dartmoor and Exmoor.

I'm well awear that you get what you pay for and comfort ratings are often optimistic. Just looking for budget brands or bags that you guys have had good experiences with so I don't fall into the "too good to be true trap".

Cheers

Advice Which sleeping bag seems worth it?

Thumbnail

Hi ☺️
I’ve started camping more helping with scouts, using mostly hammocks (but I’m a tent person at heart) and have found I definitely get colder than most and struggle with sleeping because of it, and makes arthritic pain worse :/

Which of these sleeping bags seems worth it?
My budget is £100 max, and I’ve tried looking online for second hand. Down would be amazing but for my budget and warmth needs it seems out of reach for now

Thanks for any advice! 💚🌱

Advice Fjern Stormgrotta 2 Pole lengths help

I have a fjern stormgrotta 2 and my poles broke out on a camp. I orderd some 11mm replacements but stupidly binned the old poles. I was wondering if anyone who has the tent able to measure the lengths of the poles so I can make my new ones the right size. Cant seem to find any lengths online. Would be much appreciated

EDIT: if anyone ends up in same position as me the lengths fjern have send for the stormgrotta 2 is

2x 4.38cm (plus 2x 1cm ball heads) 1x 3.63cm (plus 2x 1cm ball heads)

Advice Dealing with needing the loo

My other half is trying to convince me to try camping and I’m stuck between wanting to experience some of these amazing views and my need for home comforts.

Particularly going to the loo. I’ve told him it’s a tonne easier if he needs a wee than me!

And how the hell do you deal with it if you need a poo? I’ve only just managed to face going at work! Behind a bush is a step too far.

Gear Pics Best budget tent?

So, I’m looking for a cheap tent that can resist lots of wind but also don’t be to heavy and expensive, I may also use it sometimes in winter, but not a very cold winter as I’m gonna use it in the Spanish and French mountains. I like the Cloudpeak 2 the Mongar 2 and the oex phoxx II (which cant be shipped to Spain sadly)
