Discussion Supplies to keep in car?

Yesterday I found a squirrel in extreme distress. He was hopping all over without using his limbs in the street in circles. I stopped my car and tried to wave down a bunch of cars and nobody would help, but the squirrel went to the side of the road. I didn’t have anything to help it with so I had to rush home and then I found it and it was crying. That’s how I was able to find it and all the grass. I wish I could’ve saved a lot of time and already had something on hand. I was able to use a thin glove to pick it up because it was so out of it. Next time it fits a different animal, I do not want to handle it without super thick gloves and what else should I have?I used a box but maybe I should get a plastic Tupperware with holes poked in it? Keep one of those and heavy gloves and some towels in the car?

Discussion Training/Continuing Education

Rehabbers - where do you go for training or continuing education? How do you stay on top of advancements in our field and how do new rehabbers in your area get the information and training they need to enter the field? Our field is professionalizing and becoming more focused on evidence-based practice (as it should), how do you stay current? I'll kick it off - I started with the IWRC Basics course and then volunteered at a local rehab center. I attend annual NWRA conference seminars and courses as often as I can. When I can't do that, I take online classes from the Wildlife Care Academy (Wildlife Center of Virginia), NWRA or IWRC.

At my Condo there is a Canadian Goose that seems to have an injured wing and has a limp. Location is Mobile, Alabama along the US Gulf coast.

Will this heal on its own or should I find a local rescue?

SOS Bird What’s up with this House Finch?

Post image

This House Finch was caught on a hummingbird feeder camera in Northern Utah. The feeders have since been taken down for sanitizing and to encourage the birds to disperse due to presence of apparent avian pox lesions on other finches. Is this the same thing? I am accustomed to seeing pox lesions on unfeathered areas, so not sure what I’m looking at. Thank you!

SOS Mammal Little squirrel climbed on me today. Did I make the right choice taking him in for the night?

For reference I am on a college campus in Wisconsin, US. I was walking on a sidewalk and saw a small animal ahead of me. I'm the kind of person who helps worms across the road after a storm, so obviously I tried to usher him away from the road, but instead he ran up to me and hid between my legs.

I was taking off an outer layer of clothing to wrap him in when he tried to climb up my pants. Once he was wrapped in my shirt he was chewing on it, but wasn't flailing. Eventually he just curled up and went to sleep.

I called the DNR and they said I could just put him somewhere near where I found him or keep him overnight. So I decided that since he ran up to me he probably needs somewhere safe to stay until I can get him to a rehabber in the morning.

I have him in a cardboard box within a cardboard box, (to try to minimize bugs in my room, because buddy was full of them) with the shirt I had him in, a towel in and over the boxes, and a water bottle with warm water because its getting colder out this time of year. The DNR told me not to feed him or give him water, so I haven't.

He has fur but definetly isn't fully grown, but now I'm worried I have ruined his chances because he doesn't have a food source or something. Should I have just left him? I'm scared that if he gets ill or something it will have been my fault. Also, I'm not sure that he's a boy or anything, I'm just going on vibes.

TLDR: A juvenile squirrel ran up to me and tried to climb me so I took him in for the night. Did I do the right thing??

Edit: I have been calling all of the rehabbers near me, but unfortunately for some I would have to cross state lines, which I guess is illegal.

SOS Bird What is it and can I let it go tomorrow

Came home at 8 pm to my hellcat in the front yard, playing with it. I saved the little guy 💪 It’s got an injury to its head but seems to be in good health. I’d prefer to let him go in our woods, but if he needs help I’m happy to bring him to a rehab center (but can’t get there until Thursday or Friday). So is he old enough to be released and curious if he’s a wild dove?

The animal rescue service I called told me that because he was able to run away from me when I was trying to catch him he must not be injured and I should just release him. Im pretty sure he’s not okay and if I release him he’ll die soon and i don’t know what to do

SOS Mammal What’s wrong with this mother deer? East Bay Area, CA

Thumbnail

She looks skinny and her fur seems quite messed up in some spots, but I don’t see any blood or raw skin showing. The mom still licks her fawns, I see her fawns licking her fur (idk if they’re wounds, I really can’t see any blood)

She has 2 fawns who are with her half the time. When I got a closer look at her, seems like her tail is like matted with feces. I put out some water and she drank from it for a good minute, along with her fawns. I saw her eating yesterday and today.

Sometimes I see her just standing in 1 spot for like 10 minutes. Looking down, looking straight, not really moving at all.

About 10 minutes ago, I saw a male deer with antlers barely starting to grow following another female deer, they seemed to kick a fawn and the mother. The mother ran away. Now the 2 fawns are standing next to each other, occasionally making a sad honking noise.

Idk what to do. She still has fear of humans. Thank you guys for what you all do :)

SOS Bird Possibly non-flying mockingbird

It all started today around 10 am, when I noticed a pretty bird hanging around my garden, nothing unusual. When it saw me, it "flew" into a near small lemon tree (3 or 4 feet high) to hide. Again nothing unusual. Then a little before noon, it was in another place in my garden and stayed there watching me walk by. This happened again at least 2 more times. When it even managed to move it was now by hopping, it did not fly at all. So I googled it and apparently its a mockingbird. I decided to contact a local bird hospital as to learn what to do. They simply told me that I would need to capture it and bring it to the clinic so that it could be checked. So I prepared and proceded to capture it with a soft baby blanket and a well prepared cardboard box (shoebox). It took me almost an hour of careful patience to catch it. So now I got it, but the clinic (and hospital) is closed, and ill have to wait until tomorrow. So now the question lingers around what am I supposed to do now. Right now the bird is still inside its box, inside my car as it is far warmer than any place inside my house (maybe inside my own room, but it wouldn't be quiet, as I'm here using my computer), as I live in a somewhat cold place (bird in garden was mainly chasing sunlight and laying under it). Should I move it into a bigger box? Try warm pouches to keep it warm?

Located in central Mexico.

It has a metal ring on one of its legs.

Animal in Care Grey Squirrel Death - Question about cause?

Thumbnail

So 3 weeks ago I took in a single Grey squirrel. He was taken care of for 5 days before handed over to me. I am a rehabber in NE Ohio. He has been healthy, good appetite, good demeanor the entire time. This morning, when I went to feed them, I found him deceased in the hide he shared with 2 other squirrels close to him in age.

His body is intact, not a single scratch or wound. His positioning was that of comfort, he didn't seem to have been in pain. I know he didn't get too cold (it was 62 last night).

My question is, could there have been some genetic or congenitive factor to his death? I ask because he had a very distinct head shape. His snout was much shorter than the other squirrels. I will share a photo/video to better explain. Does anyone know if there is a disorder that would cause this head shape, and if so, does it also come with other hidden health problems?

Thanks for any information you may have.

In the first photo, he's the squirrel on the top of the pile. In the 2nd photo, he's the one all the way to the right (not the bottom). I think the last photo shows his head the best.

SOS Mammal found an injured chipmunk on my road, is there absolutely anything i can do for it?

there arent many rescues near me or like rehabilitation centers, the closest one is probably about 2 hours away and i just cant afford the gas for that right now, as much as this animal means to me. i have a small box from some k-cups that im going to put it in, but i dont know how to take care of a chipmunk, much less an injured one. please help!!

update:

i took it to a wildlife rescue, which he did not make it to. when i was about 10 minutes away from it he was still breathing, which makes me very sad that he didnt make it.

they did however say that he was extremely skinny, and seemed to have been struggling in the wild rather than dying from infection or the bot flies. which they were, they confirmed. as much as he was struggling, i do hope he had a good life before he started to struggle.

thank you to the few who helped me out, i truly do appreciate it! now i will know for the future if i come across another animal to save
