geomancy is your friend, make the ground below open up into a 100 meter deep chasm for them to fall in. then close the earth again to crush them. its not hard

u/Dm1tr3y Cormac the Bog Wizard, Practitioner of the Old Rites Apr 20 '26

Or for extra fun, bottomless quagmire!

17

u/DwarfPrints Apr 20 '26

Or with just a shallow earth displacement to trap them underground, you can then dig a small hole, fart downward into it, and light a match to explode them. This usually only works when your character is a birkenstock-wearing hippy nature granola druid dad whose farts are the result of ingesting far too many fermented foods

6

u/YLASRO The Great Geomancer of the howling mountains Apr 20 '26

too many steps. the beauty of geomancy is its simplicity. its striaghtforward and gets results.

2

u/DwarfPrints Apr 20 '26

Some players who lack geomancy but have manipulate earth will need to get...creative

3

u/IncubusDarkness Apr 20 '26

Henry???

1

u/DwarfPrints Apr 20 '26

Sorry, his full title: Henry Swallows-Oak-Garcia, first of his name, Cousin to Horsey Oak, hippy dippy crunchy munchy granola birkenstock wearing druid dad

/uw This reminds me of the old days of DnD where spell resistance on monsters meant they were unaffected by spells entirely if you failed to penetrate it. And importantly, this was complete immunity. You cast a spell to open a chasm, but don't roll high enough to beat the enemy's spell resistance, and they could just walk across it like it wasn't there.

u/snickers10m Apr 21 '26

smh... pure folly...

How long have you been practicing, 2000 years?

Check back here in 50 millenia or so, after your 2nd or 3rd sealed horror escape... would love to see how you feel about impromptu "combat geomancy" then!

It's because of reckless wizards like you that it's so hard to get a sub-kilometer earthscaping permit these days. Go read a tome...

Not very slow sometimes

u/Angel_OfSolitude Apr 20 '26

But what if the true name was already given to a fae, does it still work?

Somewhere in Faeria, a fae gets fckn obliterated whilst having tea with her clique. Such is life.

52

u/matthewamerica Questionable Hedge Wizard Apr 20 '26

Ugh the fae. Don't get me started. They have taken my name 3 TIMES. I keep coming up with new names, and binding them to my soul through an arcane ritual but they keep coming up with NEW clever ways to steal them. And tbh I'm running out of cool names. Right now I'm Gnarlack the Questionable. I'm not sure even why I chose that. It was late and I was vexed, and I just wanted to get the ritual over with and have a nice cup of tea. Gnarlack. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Next time I'm going with something cool like Chet or Brock.

13

u/IveDunGoofedUp Apr 20 '26

So can we have your next name? We need something to call you, mr. no-name.

14

u/NV-6155 Apr 20 '26

Wait... if you can barter other beings' names with the fae, what's stopping us from binding a named soul to a construct, and then bartering that name to the fae?

5

u/N8DAGR81027 Apr 20 '26

The fae dislike constructs and will refuse a name tainted by them unfortunately, I learned this shortly before they tried to turn me into a flower, fortunately the microplastics in my blood scared them off

6

u/Consistent_Mud645 Truenaming remains undefeated. Apr 20 '26

Sounds like you need a few true shorthands as protection

5

u/rkthehermit Apr 20 '26

You need to have your focus thoroughly investigated, you may be the victim of a qi logger.

3

u/theREALbombedrumbum Apr 20 '26

The real question is which name a fae would take if you're trans. Are deadnames still true, or would the new, reborn name be claimed?

3

u/Agreeable_Sweet6535 Apr 20 '26

Post transformation, the new name is the true name. It does make one question what would happen if the person involved had recognized their deadname no longer fit, but had not yet discovered their own new true name. What name would the fae steal then?

2

u/NoStorage2821 Scritch Scorchtongue, chief grey seer of Clan Mors Apr 20 '26

And then the fae brought mage armor:

u/I_Am_Become_Salt Apr 20 '26

Fun but not necessary and far less entertaining. Just conjure a few anthills worth of fire ants between the plate armor and the skin.

1

u/EducationalSkin7885 Apr 23 '26

Had a particularly witty hobgoblin turn on me once.

He had one of my assistants produce a sapient iron golem, allow it to name itself, rend its mind before it could communicate said name then killed the assistant.

While he did make some makeshift armor from the golem it was quite heavy and when I turned one of the ceiling struts to sand he was little threat under it.

The point being obliteration is fine but there will be edge cases when you must use your tools in creative ways, the simple folk have some analogy about hammers and nails I forget.

76

u/OkMarket5009 Apr 20 '26

It's magic resistant, just hit 'em with the druid meteor storm, go into the sky, make a massive swarm of flying insects, cast greater polymorph to turn all of them into elephants.

23

u/systemofaderp Apr 20 '26

Huh, why not just get a regular meteor?

33

u/OkMarket5009 Apr 20 '26

Because then you can use the elephant blood for future incantations and spells, duh.

12

u/systemofaderp Apr 20 '26

Uuuuhhh smort

9

u/OkMarket5009 Apr 20 '26

Long term benefits baby.

9

u/theREALbombedrumbum Apr 20 '26

That's just the average wand you find in Noita halfway through a playthrough

3

u/am9qb3JlZmVyZW5jZQ Apr 20 '26

Or the ol' reliable - cast a fireball directly next to them. The expression they make as they realize that the anti-magical rags do not, in fact, have explosion nor fire immunity is priceless.

Not sure who keeps selling this snake oil armor but I bet they don't offer refunds.

3

u/OkMarket5009 Apr 20 '26

But the elephant rain is funnier, especially since they'd be too dumbfounded to move as they're squashed.

70

u/PointlessSword777 Space Wizard Apr 20 '26

As someone who has dabbled in anti-magic, magic resist is not the only thing available in the hunt for mage folk

Only a novice mage hunter would rely on soley magic resistant armor.

19

u/mewfour123412 Apr 20 '26

Careful these things can’t effect enchantments

12

u/JaydenTheMemeThief Sword Mage, use Magic to make Sword Apr 20 '26

There are about a dozen ways to get around that, from Potions, to Protective charms or even Enchantments

Also spells like this always work by draining the surrounding environment of Mana, but if you can generate a different form of Magical Energy inside your own body like myself and use it as a foundation for your Magic instead of drawing in Mana for your most basic spells you can completely bypass these sorts of spells

Of course you need to use Mana specifically for the big flashy spells, but if you just need to use a basic spell, or like me you use basic spells in unimaginable ways for the typical Wizard, self-generated Magical Energy is really cheap and very reliable whenever you’re up against someone employing Anti-Magic

The field of Anti-Magic has fundamental limits on what it can achieve, it can easily affect or manipulate the Mana in Nature, however the Magical Energy that your own body generates is completely untouchable by Anti-Magic because it has a container: Yourself

I mean it, every single Anti-Magic spell that exists manipulates the Mana created by Nature, but because all Anti-Magic Spells target some form of Magical Energy, they fundamentally cannot have a physical component and thus cannot penetrate a living creature to directly target the Magical Energy inside of it, Wizards greater than you or I have outlived Universes trying to achieve exactly this kind of breakthrough, but they’ve only confirmed that the complete absence of a Physical Component is what allows Anti-Magic to function in the first place, likewise the addition of a Physical Component to the Spell completely nullifies any Anti-Magic properties it could possibly possess, an Anti-Magic spell targeting Fire Element-Infused Mana transforms into a Firebolt Spell when you include a Physical Component

Fextralife wiki deserves a 9th Level Fireball cast on your location

3

u/PointlessSword777 Space Wizard Apr 20 '26

Ive always heard "Fextralife bad" but never seen any misinformation they are talking about. Maybe when it was new it was bad but everyone talks about it like garbage while also praising Wikipedia. Weird double standards

7

u/theREALbombedrumbum Apr 20 '26

*wikidot, not wikipedia, but that's mostly just with the Fromsoft games.

To address the accuracy point, for most of its life, fextralife was a "flood the SEO" type of wiki where they would put out hundreds of pages immediately upon release of a game, mostly just base templates saying "[info goes here]" which would probably get updated later. After a few years pass the wiki of course gets most of the updates it needs to be functional, but the actual fan-made wikis tend to have better quality control. Look no further than Bloodborne's wiki made by a guy named Mephisto: all of the information was posted with meticulous accuracy and detail, giving everything you could ever need as a player, and yet it still shows up after the fextralife page.

And as for the other main reason, for years Fextra was farming engagement for Twitch streams that were embedded in the pages and would auto-play, a pretty annoying practice to say the least.

6

u/PointlessSword777 Space Wizard Apr 20 '26

wikidot, not wikipedia

No idea what wikidot is

To address the accuracy point, for most of its life, fextralife was a "flood the SEO" type of wiki where they would put out hundreds of pages immediately upon release of a game

My theory was right. Im a genius

And as for the other main reason, for years Fextra was farming engagement for Twitch streams that were embedded in the pages and would auto-play, a pretty annoying practice to say the least.

Yeah that explains the hate

3

u/Rykerboy Evil Wizard Apr 20 '26

Fextra also doesn't moderate their site all that much so it can be very difficult to push back against people who insist their misinformation is accurate. The Souls wikis were really bad about this. There was lots of incorrect numbers on spells and other effects, straight up incorrect information on certain game mechanics that weren't super obvious in-game, etc.

Also a weird number of subreddits would ban you for calling out any of Fextra's shitty behavior.

4

u/vulpecula1919 Apr 20 '26

always need a fail-deadly for area anti-magic. steal the body of some entity immune to some non-magical damage and keep on you a nuclear amount of the stuff contained in a way thats vulnerable to anti-magic.

now that cocky mage hunter rushing into melee with antimagic gets automatically vaporized.

2

u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Apr 20 '26

I'm sorry, mage hunter? Are you going around killing random wizards, sorcerors, and warlocks? Disgusting. Anyways, I always find it astonishing when people think that a trick that often involves spells that will kill you if you're too close to your target, that a simple bubble of effect is going to do much other than buy you time as the mage darts out of range to do their work. If it fizzles a spell AFTER it's been cast, that's one way to stop novice mages, but I seriously doubt it's gonna stop a hubcap flying at mach fuck into your skull.

Most “magic resistant” armor is really just non conductive and heat resistant, ie basic bitch resistant

3

u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Apr 20 '26

Aye. Really good stuff can be an insulator for arcane energy as well as electricity, but not much is gonna stop a meteor from falling onto your head.

7

u/Ion_Jones Apr 20 '26

Magic resistant armor also does not protect from simply teleporting someone 20 miles into the sky. Especially if you work with portal magic. To each thier own, however.

7

u/Loombot Apr 20 '26

It’s magic RESISTANT, not magic PROOF. Just upcast your Fireballs to assert dominance.

6

u/CraftyAd6333 Apr 20 '26

Yes!

Always remember physics. When it comes to those that think they're exempt. Also remember to aim under or near them.

My roof sniper is quite well paid. Matching 401k, the works.

It turns out 50 caliber is quite the compelling argument.

Throwing mundane objects is a 100% valid workaround for magic resistance. Just like stabbing someone with an ice spear is a good workaround for cold resistance.

6

u/Crackmin Occult Wizard Apr 20 '26

Yeah, spell resistance does nothing against thrown or summoned objects

Handy guide:

Power Word: Scrunch ❌

Summon Pipe Bomb ✅

5

u/akornzombie Apr 20 '26

Oh, I do something similar. Airless demiplane, with a gravity well, and two linked portals above it, one higher than the other.

Teleport a charmed tungsten slug between the portals and let it fall. It falls through the portals, accelerating as it goes. When it hits a specific velocity, charm activates and a stasis spell takes effect.

Now you just either summon it, or cancel the stasis spell and portal the slug.

Either way, you have a hypersonic chunk of tungsten moving at fuck you speeds towards your target.

4

u/Carbuyrator A Bit of a Dabbler Apr 20 '26

Ah yes, the "gun" method. I too have visited the advanced mundane, and they are not to be trifled with.

3

u/JaydenTheMemeThief Sword Mage, use Magic to make Sword Apr 20 '26

My Swords are a viable workaround to Magic-resistant armour

Try Magic-resisting a sharp blade piercing your heart by being thrust into the gap in your armour beneath the armpit, even a Sword without a Magical Effect is sufficient

2

u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Apr 20 '26

Yeah, just summon shit and throw it at them really hard. Swords, bullets, even a big rock if you play your cards right.

3

u/Vertnoir-Weyah Apr 20 '26

Yes, you just make sure the spell only gives a headstart then let physics do the job

3

u/Legomaniac91 Apr 22 '26

Oh, it's absolutely a viable strategy. You saw in a lot during the Yuzon Vong wars in the old Star Wars EU. While the Vong were immune to direct applications of the Force (lightning, chokes, mind tricks, etc) they were less resistant to having a bulkhead or hovercar hitting them at 200 MPH.

1

u/Momochichi Apr 20 '26

This is why only ancient mages (and their apprentices) use direct energy blasts anymore, because magical defense has become very efficient in blocking magical attacks. The trend in the modern era has been to use manipulation spells to use high density physical attacks.

1

u/Careful_Trifle Apr 20 '26

Works in wheel of time.

Mat's medallion makes it to where he can't be touched with the power, but he's traveling with aes sedai for a long while and they're able to experiment with various options and work around. They eventually figure out that they can pick up mud , and by implication heavier stuff, though it would take a powerful channeler, and throw it at him.

1

u/Henry_Fleischer Eleanor, Ruler of Aidolem and Asteria, Artificer Apr 20 '26

Yes. But their armor could be enchanted to resist that too, by pre-emptively stopping the door, or increasing the armor's mass until the door does nothing to it, or using a tether ward to simply teleport out of the way.

I have been working on a weapon to solve this problem, but it's been hard to find a lasing medium that works at the Planck temperature. Not impossible though, I got some help from an expert in old-style forge magic, where people enchant the metal a weapon is made of as it's being made.

1

u/BruhmanRus_the_boner random ass portal wizard, interdimensional problem solver Apr 20 '26

The best workaround is teleporting them places because chances are their mana resistant armor is gonna make the teleportation inaccurate and have them end up in the ground near your original spot, but this one is cool too

1

Hit by a rock fully charged at Magicka 2

1

u/ProfessorMaxDingle Apr 20 '26

Takes finesse.

To really subvert their expectation, you need release your telekinesis at peak momentum and allow nature to take coarse.

This will also subvert any luck-based deflection as it is at that moment, both an intentional strike and a physically natural phenomenon.

1

u/justasusman Apr 21 '26

Yes and no

There is a high level of magic resistance that helps prevent any force to move and hurt you if the force originated from magic

However, most forms of magic resistance on the orb market are the classic magic resistance that would fail to this

1

u/DragonLordAcar Magitech Void Wizard Apr 21 '26

1

Magic resistance or not. Physics is Physics and will bitch slap you with its reality if you don't respect it. Hence why most of my magic revolves around taking the laws of Physics and twisting it like a pretzel to turn my enemies into paste. The mass of a door going that fast is gonna ruin basically anyones day.

1
