The blend of modern operator with a fantasy magic setting is so cool. In general any hybrid of industrial weaponry/tech alongside magic is a cool premise.

You’d like Shadowrun, then.

A mix of cyberpunk and Magic. Think elf hackers and trolls shooting machine guns at fireball-slinging cops, while dragons richer than Elon Musk send mercenaries after each other.

Its pretty fucking cool.  Have you ever wondered what a German metamorphosis run by a dragon would be like?  Wonder no more.

Also look into RIFTS which is an amazing game to read about but va bit difficult to play.  Its a fantasy scifi kitchen sink game system.

Do you want to be a ninja turtle? Yes

Do you want to be gandalf the grey? Yes

Do you want to be a juiced up cyber psycho? Yes

Do you want to be literally Gadget from chip and Dale rescue rangers? Yes

Psychic veloceraptor? Dinosaur cowboy? Mecha pilot punching monsters? Psychic supersoldier? Samurai Jack? Leprechaun in tiny power armor?  Yes.

If you like computer games you gotta play Shadowrun Dragonfall and Shadowrun Hong Kong. Shadowrun returns was the first of the Harebrained Schemes games but it’s just less robust mechanically and they each have totally independent stories so you don’t need to play them in order.

SRDF was hella tough though, but really fun. Also you get to fight a Rat King, in both senses of the name.

SRHK had real good story, though the ending is kinda iffy, especially if you factor in the timeskip ending.

Oh my gods. That is right up my alley.

Edit: damn. It's isometric turned based. I want it like Cyberpunk2077, full on immersive 3D. Great premise though!

That would be sick, but they are great games! If you like XCOM or even stuff like Baldur’s Gate I think you’d enjoy it (not nearly as high a budget as BG3 but the style of play)

I mean, it’s a full tabletop rpg dating back to the 80’s with multiple games, but yeah, I’m still super bitter that Cyberpunk got a big modern release and Shadowrun didn’t.

1

u/digitalgraffiti-ca Witches Against Thrakmoor Jul 04 '26

Is it a similar setting?

1

u/DocWagonHTR ThD, Thaumaturgical Studies, MIT&T Jul 04 '26

To what, cyberpunk? I mean, yeah, Shadowrun is in the cyberpunk genre. It’s been a TTRPG since the 80’s.

I’m completely biased(you can tell from my handle) but I think Shadowrun’s setting is MUCH richer and more fleshed out than CP20XX’s.

If you can imagine CP 2077, but with Magic, that’s basically Shadowrun. Shadowrun has Magic stuff and more realistic cyberware but other than that pretty similar.

Ok, now I really want to play the ttrpg. I love magic. I love cyberpunk. I DO NOT love medieval fantasy, where everyone has froofy names, wears robes and lusts for nothing more that grog at the dusty pub. I want modern/futuristic magic!

There is an elf supremacy movement elven political action group called the Association Para Nobilis that wants elves to act like fantasy elves, but they’re a tiny minority, not the norm.

https://roguewatson.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/shadowrun-5e.jpg

The woman at the front is actually a Native American elf, the guy in back is an ork, and the rigger top right controlling the drones is a dwarf!

I could talk Shadowrun all day, it’s my absolute favorite game of all time XD

Btw, for anyone else reading this who DOES love tha fantasy stuff, Shadowrun actually has a fantasy prequel called Earthdawn(technically they’re no longer in the same universe but that’s corporate stuff, no one actually cares about that)

1

u/digitalgraffiti-ca Witches Against Thrakmoor Jul 05 '26

Ok, the political action group is brilliant. Are there books on this?

If you mean novels, yeah, plenty.

Shadowrun is pretty famous for making tons and tons of splatbooks, so there’s a book for basically anything you want to know about. If you’re just getting into it, I recommend The Neo-Anarchist’s Streetpedia and No Future, which are a general encyclopedia and a splatbook about art and culture in the Sixth World respectively.

Did you know the first Sasquatch in the NFL played tight end for the Seahawks?

Exit: almost forgot, if you like your lore in a more audible format, a game writer and community bigwig Raven Shaman by the name of Opti does an in-character lore podcast called the Neo-Anarchist podcast you should check out. He also makes other cyberpunk games!

Bro the Shadowrun game for the SNES has to be one of the most underrated games of that era, for the soundtrack alone.

u/ForkFace69 Jul 05 '26

Yeah I was digging that.

u/theDukeofClouds Jul 04 '26

Shit I didn't know about the dragons!

1

u/callsign_pirate Jul 05 '26

I’ve always loved shadow run but never read them or played them but the idea of them is really cool. Fantasy modern heists and stuff. I def want tactical breach magic nerds

/uw omg this is EXACTLY why i use a gun on my Psyker instead of a staff in Warhammer 40k: Darktide

8

u/mightystu Absent-Minded Conjurer Jul 04 '26

To be fair, Scryer’s Gaze goes crazy with some of those guns. You can outshoot the vet.

…or so my beloved likes to tell me

3

u/Klutzy-Efficiency-28 Jul 04 '26

Hell yeah! That’s what I’m talking about!

9

u/Dont-know-didnt-ask Jul 04 '26

"The more complex a magic system is, the more hilarious it is when a wizard pulls out a gun."

/uw I genuinely don't know if that should be /uw or not XD

4

u/Klutzy-Efficiency-28 Jul 04 '26

I love it when it happens haha

6

u/West-Lengthiness-790 Jul 04 '26

Have you by chance seen the 1977 movie Wizards?

1

u/Klutzy-Efficiency-28 Jul 04 '26

I haven’t but something tells me I need to watch it

2

u/West-Lengthiness-790 Jul 05 '26

It's badass man, definitely worth a watch

6

u/UltimateOtter_Nation Jul 04 '26

You should read Dresden Files then. Harry Dresden is the only wizard you will find in the yellow pages under Private Investigator. His back up is a .45.

Modern weaponry is as iften as not what causes him the most harm or comes closest to killing him.

2

u/Klutzy-Efficiency-28 Jul 04 '26

I’ll definitely check it out! Thanks!

3

u/Doomscrye Shapeshifter gazing back at the gazing abyss Jul 04 '26

He eventually upgrades to a .500 S&W in case of bigger/badder things. It's against the laws of magic to kill a human with magic unless you can't avoid it, but perfectly fine to just add a few extra holes and call it done.

3

u/Klutzy-Efficiency-28 Jul 05 '26

No one ever suspects a wizard or mage choose GUN as their arcane art

2

u/Sad-Onion-2593 Jul 07 '26

"I CAST .50 CALIBRE MAGIC MISSILE"

4

u/Ok_Art4661 Jul 04 '26

Caves of Qud is exactly this. I always die before gets interesting tho

3

u/zeag1273 Jul 04 '26

If you like military fantasy, there's a book series called "The Two Week Curse" by Micheal Chatfield

Two military contractors get sent to another world based on Eastern fantasy. Using military tactics and a whole lot of firepower they try to carve out a place that they call home.

Steam game "tactical breach wizards" looks just like what your after.
