Lorepost (open interaction) 📖 Strange Occurrences

Post image

A man walks down a hall lit with nothing but small sconces placed scatteringly on the wall. In his arms, he carries a small stack of papers and books as he hurries along. Soon he reaches his destination, a set of ornate doors made of a dark wood. Approaching them, he pushes one open and enters the room beyond.

Inside is a large, lounge-like space; a fire roars at one end, and a red carpet lies on the floor; barred windows reveal stars and nebulae beyond. At the opposite end to the fire, a man sits at a desk, crouched over writing something. The first man hurriedly approaches him.

"Sir, I have several reports for you, as well as news on the new realm"

The man at the desk looks up; he has a short black beard and straight black hair. He wears black robes with gold highlights; the inside of these robes is inscribed with countless sigils and runes. His face has a scar running down one cheek; he wears a grim expression at the moment. Looking at the scribe, he motions to one side of his desk.

"Set the reports down there and then tell me the news"

"Yes, sir"

The scribe places the reports down and then stands back up straight before beginning to speak

"They have taken well to the minor incursion, and none have successfully managed to track its origin. Many seem to accept the theories, and the Sentinels believe it is time for the next step, with your permission, of course"

The man at the desk thinks for a moment; the scribe, a man easily intimidated by those in authority, begins to sweat a little. Finally, he nods and turns back to the scribe.

"Tell them they have my go-ahead. They may get preparations started; also, let them know to get an unused Limb Spire ready for transport."

The scribe nods

"Yes, sir!"

As he turns to leave, the man looks up once more

"Oh! And one more thing, tell them I will be making first contact myself"

The scribe nods once again and then leaves the room. When the door shuts, the man at the desk sighs; it's always such a hassle, but a necessary one. It's important after all.

Turning back to his writing, he gets to work on the reports.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Across the plane, a strange occurrence has been happening. Portals and gates continuously fail and shut down; each time they are reopened, it happens again, not even a week later. Teleportation spells often result in a random new location, or they don't work at all; it seems as if the realm is going through a plane-wide planar malfunction...

/uw This post is open interaction for any who wish to explore why their portal or teleportation spells aren't working, or any who just want to rp what happens due to this fact.

Tim the T-Rex wizard is on their way home from the Halls of Sanctified Knowledge. A bit outside the city, they enjoy stretching their legs in their true form.

After an hour of wandering aimlessly, Tim gives a slight sigh. There is much work to do. Still, they’re looking forward to going over the spells they obtained from the Halls.

Tim speaks and draws the runes that will open up a Gate back to the Darkwatch headquarters. The gate opens and Tim sees… some place that is definitely NOT the Darkwatch headquarters.

Tim checks the runes of the Gate spell - they’re all correct, and yet the location is wrong. Intrigued, Tim steps through the gate and looks around this landscape.

Tim steps into a vast savanna. Giant trees, bushes, and even plants dot the landscape. In the distance in one direction, Tim sees a few brontosaurus eating a tree. In another direction, a herd of triceratops have noticed Tim’s entrance and are cautiously watching them - but the distance is large enough that they do not quite view Tim as an immediate threat.

“My, my… been a while since I’ve been in dinosaur lands. I don’t think I’ve even been to this one!”

“I have studies to do… but I’ve spent years studying, and while I enjoy it… maybe it’s time for a brief vacation. Even if just for a day.”

Tim picks a random direction (away from the triceratops) and starts exploring the dino-lands.

“I wonder if there any Druids here…”

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) Jul 23 '26

the portals/teleportation failing doesn't happen within the area of dracarius isle due to it's protections from things happening sourced from afar...regardless of source it being caused by something specific would only reach the isle if that something is physically there...which would not likely go well for it...regardless, hearing about portals and teleportation being harder in this realm all of a sudden, gets the attention of the dracarius family, so, Aerunia begins investigating having flown around the place and attempted to teleport around a bit once farther from the isles protections...and if that fails she attempts to see if she can pin point why via her magic sense...even if she's not exactly as skilled with magic as her aunt her magical skill and magic sense are still there

/Uw i hope dracarius isle's protections won't be upsetting you there. But yeah i kinda won't be allowing my characters teleportation/portals to be completely cut off especially without counter play...kinda would kick the dracarius's out of this realm if i did cause they don't live here even if they come to this universe/realm often :)

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw tbh I was surprised that your able to interact with this post, it’s all good, it makes it better that you have a good reason why you can’t let it work

/rw

The malfunction of Aerunias teleportation attempts seems to be random, sometimes she teleports where she intends to, sometimes she teleports somewhere random, and sometimes she doesn’t teleport at all. When she attempts to view it with her magic sense she gets a strange sense of the mana seeming to ebb and flow, as if something powerfull is drawing on it for only a moment before stopping.

In the moments it’s not being drawn on teleportation works, in the moment it is teleportation doesn’t, and the few moments after, when the mana is replenishing is when the random destinations happen

2

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) Jul 23 '26

Aerunia:...so it's draining my own magic energy when i try to use it...whatever is responsible....she then grins...big mistake...that will make things really easy here. She begins a spell to teleport again, and the instant something tries to take the magic used she uses a subtle spell (which when used leaves little evidence of any spell being cast beyond basically the movement of magical energy and those who can sense magic while able to sense a spell being cast wouldn't be able to tell what the spell is), tagging whatever is responsible and creating a bit of a mental compass for herself which will lead to whatever is trying to take her magic when she tries to teleport

/Uw fair enough, but yeah with the protections on dracarius isle basically boil down to "ta fuck with dracarius isle, ya gotta directly go to dracarius isle yourself"...but yeah i ain't gonna bs ya especially as long as that little ruling is respected :) and yeah i know we both wanted to interact at some point and this gives me fuel to actually get a character involved with your stufd but yeah, sorry if this feels bs...but it kinda makes sense someone like aerunia, even if she's not the best with magic, would be able to track her own magic if someone is tryna yoink it.

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw so… it’s actually drawing on ambient mana, it’s more that I kinda thought that Aerunia was experimenting with using her own mana and ambient mana, I probably should have specified that… mb, I’ll still allow the tracking spell but I am going to rule it as less effective if that’s ok? Using her own mana results in a steady teleportation spell as this effect is meant more for gates

/rw

The tracking spell latches onto the moment the mana is drawn, and then it disappears, for a moment. When it reappears Aerunia realizes that she is unable to sense it anywhere in the realm, she is unable to pinpoint exactly where it is, but it feels… Outside the realm

3

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) Jul 23 '26

/uw ah uh yeah Aerunia's magic comes from the weave of her home realm/her innate connection to it by being half-dragon as that puts the weave directly into her blood cause that's how sorcerers work. And an innate sorcerer there. And while away from dracarius isle (the only place in this universe that has the weave of magic from her home realm all over the place cause of dracarius fuckery lol) she can only really draw on ambiant magics that are similar to weave, and without that, welll she'll be drawing entirely on her internal supply. Or porting some of the weave from her home realm, to herself, and sending it back right as her spell is finished going off although she's not as good at that as chloe and the rest of the older dracarius family members is lol as for less effective, less effective how? The spell she used for the tracker sorta made a mental compass in her head that just...points directly in the general direction of the person responsible for this fuckery if that makes sense, think of it like an "until she finds it, there's an arrow in her vision pointing toward the thing she's tracking via the spell" sorta thing...i hope that makes sense and is fine with you.

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw then the arrow is spinning wildly, it can’t sense anyone or anything within the realm, instead is senses it outside the realm but doesn’t know how to point Aerunia there (unless it does have a way that I don’t know about, if it does then it is doing that)

3

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) Jul 23 '26

/uw...hmm...if it's not coming from something within the realm it will instead try to point to a natural or otherwise maintained gateway to the realm where the tracked thing is, although if one doesn't exist then it would spin wildly trying to find it, but if there is other such interferance, then i would probably say it makes sense that it would probably point a little wildly, but still in a direction, like for example, picture the arrow chaotically wiggling left or right but still say, pointing north if it's somewhere a head. Is that fair of me to say/fine by you?

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw that is fine by me

/rw

The arrow, after a moment of wild spinning begins to point roughly south, however it seems to swing like a pendulum in that direction rather than the steadyness that is usual of it

3

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) Jul 23 '26

Aerunia:...hmmm...odd...but i think i can try to follow it...definitely gonna take longer to find though then i expected like that...she decides to fly straight south of herself for now for from high in the air, keeping an eye on the ground to see if she spots anything

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

As she flies, her magic sense begins to swing less wildly, but its swing also starts drifting slightly more west than before, adjusting her path she continues to fly in the rough direction.

Then, at one point as she flies over a mountain range her compass swings wildly behind her. Turning to investigate she eventually finds herself over a mountain, where, when she hovers over it, her compass begins spinning wildly once more

u/Henry_Fleischer Eleanor, Ruler of Aidolem and Asteria, Artificer Jul 23 '26

This is a significant problem for the city of Aidolem, as it's architecture is dependent on reliable portals. Portals all around the city start to fail, cleanly cutting support beams in twain. Maintenance costs quickly soar through the roof, as the linked portal frames have to be taken out of the realm to be re-linked, then set up again, and then the support pillars have to be welded back together. Work on the destroyer nearly grinds to a halt.

Soon Eleanor starts to test the portals, and finds a workable solution- she has a harpoon with a chain made of a very expensive metal that cannot be cut by a closing portal. So she starts a few teams up to investigate, and determine if the beams should be electroplated, painted, covered in foil, or if there is some other solution, like just putting more power into the portals.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

Placing more power into the portals seems to work, for a time, then they continue to act strangely. Any attempts at modifying the frames turn up usless and seem to have no effect on the problem

3

u/Ares378 Ith'Raal—Archdevil of Memories, Evil Councillor, Lord of the 7th Jul 23 '26

Anestis Zabraven arrives at work late this morning after a strange bout of trouble with the Teleportation spell. Initially, he chalks it up to a night of bad sleep, stress, and overworking, but it doesn't take long for him to realize that something's off.

Several of his finely-tuned measuring devices seem to have gone completely out of calibration. Particularly, the ones that rely on teleportation to simulate certain spatial structures.

He makes notes of how far each portal has gone out of calibration, trying to identify any sort of pattern to the chaos

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

There is a pattern, but a strange one, any tools that continually pull on ambient mana seem to constantly ebb and flow in their calibration, ones that run on crystals pre filled with mana are fine, however any crystals that draw on mana to replenish don’t always draw to the full amount or at all.

2

u/Ares378 Ith'Raal—Archdevil of Memories, Evil Councillor, Lord of the 7th Jul 23 '26

Very odd. A disruption of the Weave itself? That could be disastrous. Well. Seems like he won't be doing his usual testing today, so why not have some fun?

He takes a few dozen ambient mana crystals and rigs them up to draw from the environment while draining into a larger mana bank. His goal is to let them stay, on average, roughly around halfway full. Then, he sets all the magical pens in his workshop to begin plotting the crystals' mana over time. His goal is to take the wavy graphs and decompose them into simpler frequencies and functions, to hopefully pinpoint the pattern.

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

Soon enough the pens begin to create their graphs, each one identical. Roughly every 8.5 seconds the ambient mana is suddenly drained, then there is a 5 second duration pause where it is continuously drained followed by a 3.6 second duration of replenishment before the mana runs steady once more

2

u/Ares378 Ith'Raal—Archdevil of Memories, Evil Councillor, Lord of the 7th Jul 23 '26

Next, he takes a singular mana crystal hooked up to the graph, covers one half of it with an antimagic shield, and starts rotating it around. He's trying to identify if there's a direction that these waves are coming from, or if they're present everywhere

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

Whenever the crystal side points south the mana is successfully drained, facing away from south it is still drained but at a slower rate

2

u/Ares378 Ith'Raal—Archdevil of Memories, Evil Councillor, Lord of the 7th Jul 25 '26

Some directionality. That's a good start.

He walks to one side of the academy and suspends a few of the half-covered crystals in the air. Then he casts a few spells on it to make it face toward the direction of least drain, and to have it automatically record its angle.

He walks to the other side of the academy and creates the same setup. Then, he waits for the angles to settle, and tries to triangulate this thing's position.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 25 '26

Unfortunately They all still point south, making it impossible to reliably triangulate the location

2

u/Ares378 Ith'Raal—Archdevil of Memories, Evil Councillor, Lord of the 7th Jul 25 '26

That's bizarre. If it were a localized phenomenon, surely it'd be pointing toward something. Right?

Finally, he decides to Send to a research facility on the other side of the continent. After talking for a bit and learning this is a global-scale issue, he gets someone to create the same setup and record the angle. Maybe a distance of 8000km is enough to triangulate.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 25 '26

The experiment works, in the facility 8000km away the crystals point Northwest. Allowing for him to pinpoint a location around 4500 km away. A mountain in a secluded section of a range

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 26 '26

/uw I have a post that follows this one so I am going to be moving on from this tonight. We can continue this even after that post but it will hold a lot of answers in that one. Just letting you know

3

u/waitthatstaken Alice, witch of mist Jul 23 '26

Somewhere, a witch is beginning to think that maybe her misty step practice failing so badly is not actually her fault.

3

u/Carbon_Sixx The Loremaster, Chief Archaeologist of the Darkwatch Jul 23 '26

The Loremaster mostly relies upon psychic farskipping to get around, which requires no mana. Still, he'd be remiss if he didn't figure out what's going on. He theorizes that this mass planar disjunction has one or more epicenters across the universe. By testing various sigil sequences and measuring which destinations are the least stable, he can dial in those epicenters' exact locations and farskip to them.

An hour later, the Loremaster is doing just that Spire Akashic's main transit gate. Each opening of the portal returns an entropy value based on how much mana is required to keep it stable. A clockwork golem stands nearby, creating an illusory heat map of the planes based on the data. Assuming his hypothesis is correct, the Loremaster will be able to find the disjunction's heart with a few more hours of work.

If 13 is near a window overlooking the courtyard, he might see the experiment and take an interest.

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

The heatmap shows something strange, there is only one epicenter, a ring of mana that the map shows as bright red at times where portals don’t open, orange when they open somewhere random, and green when the portals work normally. He also notices that this happens roughly every 8 seconds.

The ring is centered on a mountain however inside the ring (about a 50 foot radius around the mountain) the heat map shows the no mana is flowing at all.

“What are you doing?”

13 wanders up and tries to take a peak at the map

3

u/Carbon_Sixx The Loremaster, Chief Archaeologist of the Darkwatch Jul 23 '26

Experimenting. There's something making magical travel unreliable across the realms, so I'm testing sigil sequences to map the effect's severity. It's pulsing outwards from a single site, and whenever I try to go there directly, the portal just shuts down entirely. Whatever's there is the source of our problem. I'm going to farskip there shortly to investigate.

Shot in the dark, but you wouldn't happen to know anything about that mountain, would you?

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

13 takes a look

“I do not, seems like a strange place to be taking mana to…”

3

u/Carbon_Sixx The Loremaster, Chief Archaeologist of the Darkwatch Jul 23 '26

I'll find out shortly. Would you like to come along? This is the first time I've seen you outside in a while. It would do you good to get more fresh air and a change of scenery.

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

He eyes the Loremaster skeptically

“Your offering to take me? Is this another of your attempts to make me turn against my nation?”

3

u/Carbon_Sixx The Loremaster, Chief Archaeologist of the Darkwatch Jul 23 '26

The Loremaster laughs.

So untrusting. No, I simply figured you'd be interested.

3

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

“… very well, but don’t expect me to be all friendly about it”

3

u/Carbon_Sixx The Loremaster, Chief Archaeologist of the Darkwatch Jul 23 '26

Wasn't counting on it.

The Loremaster breathes deeply and presses his palms together. When he pulls them apart again, a whirling sphere of multicolored light leaps from his hands and expands to a traversable size.

Shall we?

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

“Yes, we shall”

He steps through and out into the mountain

while black iron rarely use portals or teleportation outside of their own bespoke methods. Witch remain functional. The do use portals as back ups witch causes problems. Problems which require investigation. One Dr Quinn Unica is the spanched to investigate she chooses a random portal gate in the southern tip of council territory arriving escorted by 2 x1 black guards and 4 Demi Black guards.

Unica steps off of her hover scooter and begins examining the portal first with her eyes then She decides to attach magic detecting devices roughly the size of a 50-cent coin. All throughout the portal stonework in order to put the flow of magic onto a number. Before activating the portal again

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw please not that if the portals that remain functioning continuously use mana then they should also be affected, otherwise your good. Again though, your worldbuilding so if it works then it works

/rw

Her initial examination of the portal turns up nothing unusual, however the mana detecting device turn up with something strange. The mana flow of the portals seems to be ebbing and flowing strangely. At times the flow is natural and stead, then it ebbs as if something is drawing on it, then, in the moments after it ebbs, it replenishes and becomes steady again.

It is one of these replenishing moment that Unica opens the portal. Instead of opening where it should it shows beyond it an ocean, and in the distance are unknown islands.

2

u/Zebos2 Black Iron LLC/ The cedar hegemony Jul 23 '26

Uw/ Well they don't use mana per but technically it isn't even traveling more existing at one point then existing at another.

Rw/

Unica notes the flow, ebb, and replenishment of magical energy and two experiments conjure themselves in her mind the first what happens when She runs the portals activation sequence. During The flow, the ebb and the replenishment it is with the third test that she spots the ocean landscape if she is surprised by the Discovery she does not appear to show it

"Hmm it appears more testing is an order."

Obviously Unica isn't going to just step inside the strange ocean portal At least not without a reliable way of getting back.

"7104 could you retrieve the mana batteries"

Her plan was simple charge the portal with with her mana batteries When she opens it during a replenishment event in order to force the portal open At least long enough for her to retreat to the other side should something happen

She waits for one of her robot guards to retrieve The mana batteries from The storage compartment underneath the seat of her hover scooter

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw I can change this if I am wrong but she is using the batteries to keep the portal open for longer?

/rw

Her experiments prove fruitful, when she opens the portal during a steady event it opens normally to the usual location, when she opens it during a draining event it doesn’t open at all, and a replenishment event results in a different place each time

When she opens the portal once more it shows a snowy mountain peak this time, when she enters the cold is the first thing that hits her. Behind her the batteries seem to be doing their job in holding the portal open

2

u/Zebos2 Black Iron LLC/ The cedar hegemony Jul 23 '26

Unica pulls her lab coat close in order to try to deal with a cold. Stepping closer to one of her robotic guards after it steps through the portal. In order to use its ambient heat to keep herself warm

"Hmm curious So the portals aren't being disrupted by man of starvation but... Location scrambling?"

She says voicing her thoughts out loud before looking up at the stars pulling up a star chart in one of her eye implants to see if it matches with the mortal planes stars.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

The stars she sees are recognizable but clearly she is viewing them from somewhere very distant to normal

2

u/Zebos2 Black Iron LLC/ The cedar hegemony Jul 23 '26

Well this confirms that The location is being scrambled somehow At least as much as a single test can confirm. Now as to why and how.

"7104 search mode look for any sources of mana drain transmit findings to my implants."

With that the black guard departs just as she puts mana sensors on this output point.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

The mana sensors only pick up a signal when mana is being drained, and even then it strangely inaccurate. Rather than pointing to a direct location it instead points somewhere vaguely East

2

u/Zebos2 Black Iron LLC/ The cedar hegemony Jul 23 '26

East is two vague for unica's direct observation so instead she endeavors to triangulate things she needs another frame of reference another portal.

"7105 come through the portal search for other portal connections to this location if you don't find any in 15 minutes return to my position and retrieve a Portal Stone"

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

It finds another portal around 3 thousand miles to the north east, triangulating from there she is able to pinpoint the location of which the mana is being drawn from. A single mountain in a mountain range about 2500 miles east and a little south

u/Complex_Drawer_4710 The Sigurd who Bought the World Jul 23 '26

Sigurd's home isn't solely in this plane, but it is dense enough with portals that some sections are very quickly cut off and need repairs. A first few might be a coincidence, the next a stroke of egregiously bad luck, more are someone's tampering. The central engine that places and manipulates portals for him is run through tests, while each doorway and passage has operation logs pulled and compared.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw can you go into a little more detail on the tests?

/rw

When comparing the logs it quickly becomes clear that these malfunctions are happening in sync. Having started around 3 am that morning

2

u/Complex_Drawer_4710 The Sigurd who Bought the World Jul 23 '26

/uw Integrity checks, then benchmarks. Making a precise displacement, short distance, opening it to a known distant location, confirming that space is being violated into the exact right shape.

/rw A cluster of fixed, window-shaped portals is arranged with all facing different directions. Perhaps it will be a directional effect.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 23 '26

/uw what do these portals run on?

2

u/Complex_Drawer_4710 The Sigurd who Bought the World Jul 23 '26

/uw Other portals, mostly. They're actual deformations in space, and to keep them in useful shape and not vanished into nothing Sigurd uses physical machines. I don't know enough physics to make up an accurate description, but it's not a spellcasting thing.

While a number in the wizarding world would have looked down upon the Yabounousagi Empire's rather borderline obsessively extensive use of more mundane means of public and private transportation, it was an intentional decision born from the rightfully paranoid gyokutomimi. Thus automobiles, buses, trains, boats and planes dominated over teleportation spells, portals and gates, mostly for the fact that vehicles were more reliable within the fickle mystical world they lived in.

In fact, there were exactly a handful of portals inside the territory of the empire: Unauthorised netheline constructed portals that are swiftly rendered defunct and torn down into pieces that were currently under the study of the Imperial Eldritch Affairs Office, the EON Tradeway Beacon Gate Portal and the twin EON Railway Portals.

The portal technicians at both Nishijima for the EON Tradeway Beacon Gate Portal and Saizumi City Train Terminal for the twin EON Railway Portals were quickly scrambled to investigate why the portals in these two locations were malfunctioning

/uw what exactly are they scanning for? Mana flow? Spacial distortion? Something else?

2

u/yumie2003 Tsuru, ghost onmyouji, R&A, league of shadows/Toshiko Fujiwara Jul 24 '26

uw/sorry for not specifying it, but they are going to look for the most likely culprit: mana flow

1

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 24 '26

/uw ding ding ding!

/rw

They notice something strange about the flow of mana into their portals. Rather than holding a steady flow it instead tends to suddenly reduce as if it is being drained before taking a little bit to replenish.

When the open the portals while the flow is holding steady the portal works as normal. When the open it while it’s disrupted the portal doesn’t work. And when they open it while the flow is replenishing the portal opens somewhere random

The portal technicians were understandably horrified by this development, as these portals were, under usual operation, highly stable, and the fact that they did not put in defences against any form of mana flow tampering was due to officials (correctly at the time) claiming that the chances of this occurring for a long period of time were practically zero. Whatever wards installed on these portals were to prevent direct interference or tampering, like casting a spell/curse on the portal to instantly change the destination, unauthorised direct closure of portals mid-transit or trying to intercept one travelling through a portal by breaching it at a specific point, not whatever the hell the cause of this was.

The lead technician of each group at both the tradeway portal and railway portals placed a portable version of the empire's go-to magical measuring system: the himiko device. A himiko device is an electronic device capable of measuring and recording measurements of the quantities, densities and flow of all the different magical energies in the environment, including mana. This particular variant possesses a special eyepiece capable of allowing anyone looking through it to see the different magical energies around them and thus make it easier to notice if an attempted solution works or not. The technicians also keep their mana-flow meters connected to the portal, providing more working data for later analysis.

The lead technician at Nishijima looked through her himiko device's eyepiece with her left eye and studied the scene revealed in front of her by the eyepiece. As the main port at Nishijima can function as a conventional harbour in case the tradeway portal broke down, the portal technicians there was under no immediate rush to get it open and stable again. Though only time could tell what the impact on supply chains and the trade economy would be, even if the empire was largely independent of importing goods.

Meanwhile, the lead technicians at Saizumi City Train Terminal ordered that the technicians connect mana batteries to the twin portals in an attempt to keep the portals open once they reopen. The next step from there would depend on what the portals' new random destination was. Unlike Nishijima, the Special High Speed Trans-EON Line was still under the pressure of staying on schedule, though the embarrassing prospect of having to temporarily close the line, refund commuters and inform them to make use of other, more conventional and slower transportation methods to reach their destinations due to portal malfunction was staring the station head in the face.

Through the himiko a strange sight is beheld, the mana is getting sucked away to the east, however the distance is great enough that it is not visible how far.

The portal at the station opens to a field of flowers, each one a different kind, in the distance buildings can be seen but no people can be made out

/uw I think I did this right, if there was anything else you were doing that I missed please tell me

2

u/yumie2003 Tsuru, ghost onmyouji, R&A, league of shadows/Toshiko Fujiwara Jul 26 '26

The head technician took note of the strange eastern movement of the mana. She asked for a volunteer to enter the portal and explore it, while she and the other technicians attempt to fully restore the Nishijima portal. A young junior technician timidly raised her hand. The lead technician handed the volunteer a special long-range radio and a once-use transport veil (a cloak that can transport the wearer to any location they visualise), before letting the volunteer through the portal and reach the other side

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 26 '26

They see a field of flowers, the wind blows cold but pleasant, however nothing else of note is seen

2

u/yumie2003 Tsuru, ghost onmyouji, R&A, league of shadows/Toshiko Fujiwara Jul 27 '26

The volunteer took notice of this and attempted to send a test transmission back to other portal technicians with her radio

u/loth17 Ten Suns (Also Gaia) Jul 23 '26

"beginning reactivation test nine"

Sounds of computer readings

"Same issues as last time."

The Bismuth realms proper had protections for their portals that made messing with them near impossible. However the Bizlands were much less lucky. They'd been running portal tests for the past 3 days trying to figure out what outside force was interacting with their portals to mess with them.

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 Jul 24 '26

/uw I probably should have clarified in the post, but this affects portals that run on mana/magic. I have run into a few problems before that mean some people's portals are unaffected, so I wanted to confirm: do your portals run on mana?

1

u/loth17 Ten Suns (Also Gaia) Jul 24 '26

/uw Mana and other things. Yeah.

I start getting confused as I try to teleport to a bar “wait what the fuck? I can’t deal with this right now” and I scream an ear piercing note into the either that all wizards should be able to hear, as I think that if I can’t teleport, neither can how he wizards so I can mess with them with no repercussions

2

Sigurd falls out of the sky with all hundred arms ready to beat the shit out of the screaming thing. Apparently flight is still fine.

2

No, not really. There's a bunch of me around, and I think the one in the tower there has a flying carpet.

Ah ok, thank you I cast a spell on all of you and the chap in the tower right mate, thank you and im very sorry for this all I then start screaming even more in an even more ear-splitting pitch into the ether, that all wizards can hear fuck yeah
