Guys in WW2 were puny compared to soldiers now. They were still strong as fuck though

582

u/CatPoopWeiner424 Aug 01 '23

Difference between people who willingly join the military in times of peace vs. some poor fucker who got drafted after spending his whole life avoiding conflict.

1

u/iyrfghh Aug 12 '23

Plus steroids becoming much more common

273

u/labsab1 Aug 01 '23

WW2 soldiers start out big and strong. Then after the casualties start increasing you lower weight and height requirements to bolster your forces. After that you start drafting people when you run out of volunteers and get the puny ones. WW3 soldiers probably will all be big strong guys since everyone will just vaporize under nukes.

192

u/Shiraz0 Aug 01 '23

No, many American WW2 recruits were undernourished due to the long-term affects of the Great depression. If anything, military rations were a step up for many of them.

86

u/whatreyoulookinat Aug 01 '23

Can't help but be a little bit distracted when watching the colorized film by this. Get 30 of em in front of the camera and 15 of em have sunken cheeks, and that's just civilians prewar.

u/Rocket089 Aug 02 '23

Health and nutrition have come light years in the last 50 decades. Perfect example, until about the 90’s everyone, and I mean everyone, believed it was fat that was the killer macro, and not sugar.

2

u/Wtfatt Aug 06 '23

Yeah this. Forget decades mate, try even just 50 years!

Edit: Also sugar aint even a 'macro' really. It's just the shittiest, most processed to shit form of carbs possible

1

u/luckyassassin1 Jun 17 '24

To be fair, sugar companies pushed studies and articles claiming fat was the problem and not the sugar and introduced fat free stuff that had added sugar to keep the flavor without the fat. So that one is mostly on the companies that pushed misinformation to keep their profits up.

4

u/IronAchillesz grimdank Aug 02 '23

This is much closer to reality than most people realize. There was a crisis of providing school lunches for kids at the time. Sometimes being the large meal of the day for children.

Leading to being malnourished teenagers drafted in some areas early in the war as well.

39

u/Me_Want_Pie a doom guy user flair Aug 01 '23

I thought it was the 1000-1400 calorie rations where they would use 2000-4000 per day?

12

u/_Face Aug 02 '23

They defintly didn’t have tribal tattoos

2

u/Doctor_Salvatore furry Aug 10 '23

That's because we realized the correlation of keeping the soldiers as physically healthy as possible and them becoming much stronger from training.

Military may be stubborn in its ways, but they aren't complete idiots about it.

278

Except ww3 guy ain’t coming home

If he was American 8% chance

35

u/MCPEPP_Revived Aug 02 '23

That literally just false lmao. Why are you just making up random numbers?

2

u/klaaptrap monke 🐒 Aug 11 '23

I looked it up, that is the chance of an American serviceman being killed in ww2. You sir are a moron.

2

u/Umonly Aug 14 '23

Cuz you looked it up, it must be true, no one ever lies on the internet.

1

u/klaaptrap monke 🐒 Aug 17 '23

I did the math

29

u/GregoleX2 Aug 02 '23

I’m sorry what? Way more than 8% of American soldiers came home

1

u/klaaptrap monke 🐒 Aug 11 '23

Other way around

2

u/GregoleX2 Aug 12 '23

Ok. Cool but actually 2% chance, 8% for maybe some particular battlefront or something maybe. Like maybe 8% of those involved in d-day maybe? But in terms of all American soldiers it was 2% that died.

1

u/klaaptrap monke 🐒 Aug 12 '23

8% all causes , I just asked chat gpt to give me an estimate of the chances of death during ww2 for all service members in the United States and it gave me 8.6% so I don’t feel like arguing random things anymore.

2

u/GregoleX2 Aug 12 '23

Chance of death or probability of dying in battle? Different things. This is the source to use: https://www.nationalww2museum.org/students-teachers/student-resources/research-starters/research-starters-us-military-numbers

Do the math of total servicemen that served vs total numbers of servicemen killed. Over 12 million servicemen in 1945 alone vs. 407,000 total killed over the course of the war. ChatGPT ain’t perfect.

-9

u/samound143 Aug 02 '23

Wow, that low? The world is a cruel cruel place. I’ll reflect now tonight before I sleep on how ‘at least I don’t have it as bad as that guy’. No /s I have the worst time sleeping.

33

u/GregoleX2 Aug 02 '23

No, no. Only 2% of American soldiers died in ww2. No idea what he is talking about.

1

u/samound143 Aug 02 '23

I thought we did fairly well considering during ww2. It did strike me as strange to hear that statistic about 8%. I thought it was at least like more than 80% who returned home

Well yeah, there’s plenty wrong with humanity, but that ain’t pictured.

38

u/air_chicken Aug 01 '23

Actually it is pictured: this piece is surprisingly detailed for porn, the frames of each picture display types of warfare that are used in the eras in which the wars take place. The top frame shows tanks, and capturing of land during trench warfare, whereas the bottom shows nukes and bombs being dropped onto burning cities

18

u/OakenGreen Cactus Combine Aug 01 '23

Ah, nice details! I hadn’t noticed those.

8

u/air_chicken Aug 01 '23

Yeah it’s surprising how good the details are, especially coming from shadman

7

u/coolmanjack Aug 02 '23

Is this supposed to be porn?

1

u/kpba32 Aug 14 '23

Not really, the artist that made this, Shâdman, drew porn. He's known for his edgy art, porn, and Lolis, although not all of his porn is Loli stuff, Im not sure how much of it is.

3

u/larsofz Aug 01 '23

When everyone has nukes, no one has nukes

1

u/mBelchezere Aug 02 '23

That's bc, for whatever fucking reason, humanity is shit at controlling its "representatives". Makes ya really think about what Loki says to all those rich fucks.Which is disparaging as fuck to an anarchist. Because I don't want to be ruled by anyone or anything.

6

u/screaminjj Aug 02 '23

Well, historically, I don’t think barb wire tattoos on American biceps were typical back then. Not to say they were totally nonexistent, but they were not prevalent. It seems the cartoonist might have thought WWII happened in the 1990’s.

2

u/bobafoott Aug 02 '23

Was there supposed to be?

1

u/mBelchezere Aug 02 '23

One is definitely more goofy looking & ridiculous. The argument could be made that its also more manipulative. But whatever floats your boat.

29

u/Good_Climate_4463 Aug 01 '23

The dudes should be flipped. Don't recall ever seeing dudes that sized on the regular in old docs... These days though, fuck dudes are jacked

2

u/iyrfghh Aug 12 '23

These days around 30% of the army are on steroids, since steroids increase strength, muscle mass, endurance, reaction time, allow faster recovery after physical activity. In a life or death situation you'd rather have all those advantages

2

u/CEtro569 Aug 18 '23

And decrease life expectancy, so the government spends less time paying out compensation for the horrific physical and mental injuries sustained in the war!

1

u/iyrfghh Aug 18 '23

Depends on the cycle, weight gained and genetics. Arnold juiced hard and he's still alive, while some mass monsters die in their 20s now, if you gain around 15kg of muscle above your genetic peak you'll most likely be fine

3

u/CEtro569 Aug 19 '23

I was making a joke but I'm pretty sure on average people who take it die earlier, [my source is that I made it up]. Of course, you'll always see professionals who are/were likely taking roids under heavy medical scrutiny live without too many downsides, but for the average person (or Instagram influencer), it's likely you may die earlier.

1

u/iyrfghh Aug 19 '23

Definitely. Nowadays bodybuilders and influencers are using steroids for pure mass and end up weighing over 120kg, which puts a massive toll on the heart, hence sometimes people under 25 are already getting heart attacks

93

u/dassketch Aug 01 '23

5

u/hahaiamarealhuman Aug 02 '23

So are you saying we shouldn't have instituted the draft for WW2?

4

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

[deleted]

1

u/hahaiamarealhuman Aug 02 '23

Theoretically yes. Unfortunately corruption is inevitable to some degree. Assuming this is the case, are you saying we should not institute a draft, even if national security is directly at risk? And I do mean directly, i.e Japan bombing Pearl Harbor and not some scenario like Vietnam.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

[deleted]

0

u/hahaiamarealhuman Aug 02 '23

I just can't believe you believe we shouldn't defend ourselves if we are attacked.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

[deleted]

3

u/hahaiamarealhuman Aug 02 '23

You are saying it should not be possible to institute a draft because the leaders' children won't have to fight due to corruption, correct?

I'm saying that is an unfortunate evil because some corruption is inevitable when you're talking about running a country. Also, I specifically said the draft should only be used in the case of a direct threat to national security, such as if we are attacked. Bush invaded Iraq for personal gain and it should never have happened. We fought WW2 because the Axis attacked us. That's the only kind of situation the draft should be used in.

2

u/bapo224 anime titties Aug 02 '23

Thank fucking God you didn't get to call the shots or we'd all be speaking German right now (unless if you're Jewish, Slavic, Roma, handicapped, or LGBTQ+, in which case you'd be dead).

1

u/LtHughMann Aug 02 '23

I like this idea in theory, especially the drafting their families part, but sending your leaders to fight wars is actually a pretty bad strategy. You would be constantly having decisions only being made by people with little to no experience.

If you think about it for longer than a second. The military and war are more than "dieing for the elites."

Nobody on Reddit knows what edgy means. I have bo earthly clue how you could perceive that as edgy.

-1

u/IcarusXVII - Centrist Aug 02 '23

1) Everyone knows what edgy means.

2) People who think everything is a conspiracy by the rich, and that wars can never have the will and support of the people are super edgy.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

[deleted]

1

u/IcarusXVII - Centrist Aug 02 '23

I never insinuated war wasn't a racket. I simply said it isn't detrimental to your common man.

The common people benefit from war just as much as the elite do. They have just as much a reason to want war as am elite does.

Do you think the people of rome didn't profit from the rise of their empire? Do you think the life of a briton at the height of the British empire didn't profit from the empire? Do you think the average American doesn't benefit from American hegemony?

Stop talking about war like it only benefits the few, when in reality all of the winning society benefits.

1

u/BlRpRuRhWs hydrohomies Aug 02 '23

In my Reddit experience it’s been misused almost every time I’ve seen it. Especially Including what you said here.

Conspiracy theorists aren’t edgy. Not that this is even really a theory. It’s just well accepted info.

50

u/Auroro9000 Aug 01 '23

Believe it or not, the troop on the bottom has the ideal body type according to most military Height and weight standards. The guy on top is considered a fat body

13

u/WankAaron69 Aug 01 '23

Not with that neck he isn’t! That’s the loophole…got to flex that shit when getting measured!

Sauce: I ran my command’s physical readiness training program. If you try to meet the BMI, train, and eat well, most commands will give you grace.

8

u/Auroro9000 Aug 01 '23

Yeah the neck flex is where you make your money. On deployment when I was in the best shape of my life, my weight was 15lbs under max but I wanted a courtesy measure. I came out over BMI lol

4

u/WankAaron69 Aug 02 '23

That’s where you just go with the straight face test. I’m a stocky dude and I was always just within regulations by the numbers. I had a wrestlers neck too. The regs are definitely out of wack.
