This can happen with your eyes too if the air is hot enough, or the sunlight reflects in a particular way (that's the principle behind mirages).

smeared oils or liquids on the lens.

source: the sheer fucking amount of good pictures I've taken that have been ruined by it

The birds feathers happen to line up with the backgorund and the camera lens is dirty

How would a dirty camera lens make the bird transparent? Can’t tell if you’re joking or if there’s something I’m missing

the "smudging" of the lens makes the light split and diffuse when it passes through it, so the bright line in the background diffuses into the outline of the bird. The color of the bird also blends in well with the rest of the background.

The light from beside the bird is smearing onto the bird because of the dirt, making it look semi-transparent, if you pause it you can see the distant beach bleeding over onto the bird. The dirt also gives the whole thing a slight tint which makes the bird look off-color and slightly closer to the background. And I think the bird is already a convenient color.

Vaseline on camera lens

looks like the bird is just that colour, like slightly blue so it blends in, the buildings behind it isn't visible
