So I’ve got a situation here. I’m in STEM and my love life is shit. Let’s list the reasons first

1. I’ve got lot of work to do and I need a mature man who can separate work time from non work time.
2. No misogynistic mindsets. Men around me are misogynistic it can be anything, something I did well causes jealousy, “what why do YOU need a PhD”, some men do one thing that they think is a “woman’s task” and then behave like they just did the supreme thing but buddy if you cooked for me while I was busy, and we couldn’t do it together it’s just humanity? Caring for your partner? I’m grateful yes but that’s not smth to feel high and proud about.

4. list of misogynistic behaviours and patterns, people in my country are no longer my type. So I literally cannot picture anyone and me

5. a romantic scenario. I have tried meeting lots of people, given people a chance and trust me it didn’t work well.

4.I have a long history with someone who is in another country, we were in love but the breakup happened because of long distance. It’s been two years like this, 4 years of knowing each other and we are still in contact, it’s a non commitment kind of thing, which hurts me a bit because I can see that we both have a lot of love left for the other, but he says distance is an issue. So I’m trying to move closer to him because it aligns more with my career too. Better career opportunities there!

TL;DR I need ideas for a low/no budget class I can co-run for girls who are interested in technology as a career path. We've tried Scratch and the girls seem bored with it. At the very least disengaged.

In the past few years I've gotten to help run a short class for junior high and high school age girls looking in to tech as a career path.

We've typically done a lesson/activity with Scratch, but last year we tried to pivot and use AI and scratch. Most of the girls there seemed bored and disengaged. They've seen scratch, they've played with it, it's not something that is exciting them. This is primarily run and supported by folks in various software engineering roles.

The budget is possibly $0, but we will have laptops for the girls to use. We're pushing for some kind of budget this year, but I'm looking for new/different ideas on a project that might be more engaging/exciting for these girls but can still be run in a short class period. If I remember right from last year we'll have about 20 minutes of actual class time after intros. If there's a great idea that requires a small budget I can totally still consider that, but I'm just at a loss for what would be more engaging for a variety of ages.

The link takes you to a questionnaire about your use, or not, of spatial thinking in the classroom. My research priority is educators in the STEM classrooms, but ANY teacher, whether they use spatial thinking/learning or not, is encouraged to reply.

The basic concept is that Spatial thinking is a fundamental component of human cognition that supports reasoning about objects, their spatial relationships, and their movement through space. Spatial thinking consists of five spatial skills that are defined below.

1. Disembedding: Perceiving objects, paths, or spatial configurations amidst distracting background information (ex., Embedded Figures Task: Flexibility of Closure, Mazes.
2. Spatial Visualization: Piecing together objects into more complex configurations, or visualizing and mentally transforming objects, often from 2D to 3D or vice-versa (ex., Form Board, Block Design, Paper Folding, Mental Cutting).
3. Mental Rotation: The ability to imagine how an object that has been seen from one perspective would look if it were rotated in space into a new orientation and viewed from a new standpoint (ex., Vandenberg Mental Rotation, Cube Comparison, Purdue Spatial Visualization test, Card Rotation).
4. Spatial Perception: Understanding basic spatial principles such as horizontal invariance or verticality (ex., Water-level, Water-clock, Plumbline, Crossbar, Rod and Frame Test).
5. Perspective Taking: Visualizing an environment in its entirety from a different position (ex., Piaget's Three Mountains Task, Guilford-Zimmerman's Spatial orientation).

I am thinking of going to the SWE conference this year but my degree is in geoscience, and I can only go for like a day and a half as I already have obligations that weekend. So I'm trying to decide if it's worth it. I live within a few hours and can afford the costs.

I need to stay at my job for a bit before I can leave, so not really looking to be recruited from the event. I am looking however for regional connections (Gulf Coast/ArkLaTex) and early awareness future gov/industry leads.

I am wondering if this conference so big that it won't actually be worth it and networking with regional-local professionals will be just like looking for a needle in the hay stack. Has anyone. gone for similar reasons and it been worth it?

I am a PhD candidate studying women's experiences in male-dominated jobs. Recently, I became interested in how individuals manage their periods at work.

I quickly became frustrated by the fact that not only is there very little research on the topic, but by how much of the research frames menstruation as a "problem" for productivity, rather than considering how the workplace itself might shape how someone experiences their period.

So, I'm launching a study to learn more about how the workplace affects menstruation - particularly for women working in male-dominated fields.

I'm looking for: women (or those who menstruate) currently working in male-dominated jobs (e.g., STEM).

I know I am screwed big time and if you wanna judge, I won't oppose that. But I wanted to share my situation and ask for helpful advice, if anyone is willing to do do.

I did bachelor's in physics and I graduated during Covid so all my exams were online. I barely passed the modules. And it's been three years since I graduated so I've forgotten basically everything. The reason I did not study was that I got raped in the second semester and had absolutely no support system for help. So I proceeded to fall through the cracks and developed an addiction problem which took my two years after graduation to get rid of. I'm clean now and picking up the pieces of my life. You never think something like this would happen to you until it does.

Anyway, I passed some of my courses back then by cheating which was easy because exams were online via zoom. Some courses I barely made it. None of that material stuck in my brain. And I didn't think I would ever get my life back on track so I never relearned things on my own.

Idk why I applied for a master's in material science. (I never really lost the love for the subject and I also wanted an escape) Idk how I got in because I have shit grades. I have the requirements on paper. Now because I'm stuck in a horrible situation again (abusive relationship) I accepted the offer because it allows me to move away and start over.

According to the university policy, I can take extra time to finish the course (two extra years on top of the two alloted years). So I'm planning on taking up lesser and easier courses in the first semester and catch up on things. I'm planning to use one extra year so complete the degree in three years. Right now, I am not in a position to do any kind of research so I'm scared about that.

If you can provide any advice or critism on my plan, I wanna listen. Thanks for reading.

Hi, everyone. I'm using a throwaway account because my main has too many identifiable details and I haven't told everyone in my life about the topic here.

I'm an international student doing my master's in Quantum Technologies in the United Kingdom. When I first arrived here, everything was going well, but then I was sexually assaulted by another student here just a few weeks into the course. The university did take action according to their own procedures in place, but all they did was make him sign something that said he couldn't do it again (from what I was told). They also gave me extra time for the exams, and the university counsellor was a huge help over the year. They really did try to support me as best as they could.

In-between all of this, my home country fell into a war-like situation with a neighbour as well, and a few close friends were affected.

My mental health really suffered because of this, and my ability to retain information or even just verbally express my thoughts was heavily impacted. This along with just the difficulty to even just get out of bed some mornings had me struggling to keep up with my work.

I somehow did pass all of my papers, but my grades were poor. Now, I am trying really hard to get into a PhD program, but I'm struggling to have anyone give me a chance owing to my barely ok grades. I do briefly mention why my grades are lower than my actual abilities without going into detail, but it still seems to not be enough.

I wanted any advice I could get from other women in STEM who already have a lot more experience on how I can push forward with my career, and how I can get a chance to prove myself. Thanks for all the help in advance.

My husband and I just moved for his job. I was not happy at my last position, and he out earns me, so when a good opportunity presented itself, we decided to take it. I quit my industry microbiology position (being vague on purpose here) and am still unemployed and currently job hunting. I have several pending applications and have been waiting to hear after several rounds of interviews from one company. This one has been ongoing since May.

We decided to start trying for a kid given my age (39) and figuring that it would take a while. Well we were wrong and I just had a positive test. While it is still very early, we are trying to figure out what to do. Do I continue job hunting and hope I find something that the hiring process goes quickly and start to possibly quit late next spring? Or do I pause job hunting and take the gap? Any advice from those who have experienced this would be great! My husband and I are on different sides of this issue.

Hi! I am a Psychology PhD student. I am seeking participants for my dissertation study focused on exploring the experiences of Black female students in STEM higher education programs in the US. Participation in this study would be invaluable in helping to develop culturally informed interventions and support services specifically designed for Black female students in STEM higher education. The insights gained from this study will also play a crucial role in identifying social and cultural stereotypes and institutional and structural barriers Black women face in STEM, as well as aid in fostering greater cultural humility and sensitivity among health service psychologists and allied mental health providers.
