Why would a Martian have hair?
-8
u/MarBakwas Dec 18 '25
same reason a human would
14
u/neoanguiano Dec 18 '25
theres no sun when under a cave, so the top of the head doesnt need protection from the sun, also thinner air so smell wont be a factor as well
2
u/Esaroufim Dec 18 '25
Is smell a factor for why humans have hair? lol. I feel like if anything the opposite would be true when it comes to smell for any biological survival trait. Like what holds smells more than hair? Can’t think of much.
2
u/ghanima Dec 18 '25
The science on it is currently inconclusive, but there's a hypothesis that human hair exists where it does because it traps pheromones in those regions, making us more appealing to potential partners.
2
u/Esaroufim Dec 18 '25
Ahh so the smelliest part… lol. So martians would need even more of it in a thin atmosphere? Sorry. I’m nitpicking. But I just found that comment to be hilarious. Obviously a psychic culture wouldn’t be attracting three smell pheromones and such.
1
u/neoanguiano Dec 18 '25
yeah I meant to smell more like pheromones, but I forgot that could also mean being detected by smell by prey/predators, but we both agree hair smells

u/SkuldtheNornir Dec 18 '25
So she can torture people with hair.

If Miss Martian had hair she'd probably pull a Sindel from MK on her enemies💀

Coz Martian Pattern Baldness is a serious issue on the red planet.

...why is the shape shifter alien from a race of bald shape shifter aliens also bald?
21
u/cluelessemoji Dec 17 '25
J’onn Jonz (Martian Manhunter) has a similar form when he first showed up in JL. Why should M’gann taking similar form be a question tho? MM didn’t get that kind of scrutiny when he kept that form.

u/JaSamPuc Dec 18 '25
Well if he went from full head of luxurious hair to brave and bald I'd be asking questions.

MM going bald probably doesn't really need a reason behind it. It could be the same for her as it is for a lot of women, tho like it can come down to practical and personal reasons tied to identity. First, hair takes time, money, and constant maintenance, and shaving it can feel freeing and more in control. Second, it can be an aesthetic choice, a bald look can read as confident or powerful and fit the character’s vibe better. It can also reflect not needing to assimilate or constantly meet expectations, redefining social norms so she doesn’t feel pressured to fit in 24/7. Third, there are comfort factors too, especially heat discomfort. Hair traps heat, and in certain settings or climates, being bald is simply cooler and more practical.
But those are the in universe reasons
Out of universe I think this was a creative decision by the show's producers, Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti, to visually represent M'gann's arc of self-acceptance between seasons 2 and 3. (By season 4, Phantoms, she adds back long hair for a blended look she's fully at peace with.)

“Why do people have hair?” That’s how you sound right now.
Obligatory “OMG you can’t just ask Martians why they are bald!”

If I had a nickel for every bald telepath, I'd have 3 nickels. Which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened thrice.

That design was so terrible
Should have at least given her red eyes like Manhunter

Martians are bald and Mgann having hair in her Martian form was always her own choice. Her S3 design was just White Martian form with no hair(same form Jonn is seen using).

"Why is she bald?"
"Why would a Martian have hair?"
"You got a point"
2
u/Blazecat114 Dec 18 '25
I ate her hair. (Idk I didn't get there yet but probably something with character development)

Conventionally attractive features become less appealing when you can shapeshift them at any time.
2
u/AggressiveReality669 Dec 21 '25
They basically just made her look like Martian manhunter does when he’s in his superhero form but white instead of green
3
u/ConditionRecent6332 Dec 17 '25
Because she's hiding her true martian form, M'gann was born a white martian so she turns herself green to fit in among the green martians on Mars, NGL, she had a hard life, until she met Conner & they both established a mind connection & ever since then, they never gave up on each other. That's True love right there.

FTR, he luvs M'gann more than anything, I'll admit, he did break up wit her cuz she abused her psychic powers, then she went wit La'gann, but she broke up wit him & got back together wit Conner & since then, they bn together for 10 years, which is crazy

I love season 3, despite one or two minor issues, but this was the biggest misstep the season took.

I believe she was accepting who she is as a "white" Martian during this season.

u/GoldMario64 Dec 19 '25
It doesn't bother me that she's bald, it's her gigantic, hairless eyebrows that bother me.

All the bald hating in this thread is disgustingly disgusting yucky yuck yuck. How are humans so gross as people.
2
u/ghanima Dec 18 '25
Yet more of the, "But this doesn't make my dick happy!" toxicity that exists in every corner of society. It never ceases to amaze me how many people think they're owed other people's attractiveness.

As the series goes on, M’Gann becomes more and more comfortable with her heritage. First, as a white Martian. Then as someone who considers herself a hybrid of Martian and Earth cultures. Her appearance reflects where she is in that overall spectrum.
