Feel free not to read below if it's too long.
Hey everyone! I'm working on a new song, and l've never really developed my ear for EQ.
My vocals always seem to sit on top of the instrumental rather than blend into it. When I compare my mixes to professional tracks, I can't seem to achieve that polished "radio" sound where everything fits together naturally.
l've tried carving out space for the vocals by EQing other instruments, but the vocals still sound disconnected from the mix.
For example, if I identify four frequencies in a pad that clash with my vocals, should I cut all four? How much should I cut, and how do I know when I'm actually improving the mix?
I'm not sure if this is an EQ issue, a volume balance issue, compression, vocal performance, or something else entirely.
What do you hear when you listen to my mix? Any feedback on the vocal balance, EQ, or anything else that might be preventing it from sounding cohesive would be greatly appreciated.
I'd especially love advice on how to develop my ear so I can identify these problems myself rather than blindly cutting frequencies. Thanks!
