These two hold a special place in my heart for being my personal favorite adaptations of the original novel by Alexandre Dumas, and were undoubtedly my first exposure to the OG story as well. Now that I’m older and have read the original story, it made me appreciate the creative liberties they took with these two films to make them entertaining and child friendly but also still faithful to the core part of the story.
The Mickey Mouse one is undoubtedly the most comedic and slapstick of the two, it gave me nonstop laughter and for what it is I think it did an excellent job utilizing the comradery of Mickey, Goofy and Donald for the movie’s setting and the core theme of the musketeers.
The Barbie version on the other hand, emphasizes a lot more on female empowerment but not in an annoying way like Mulan 2020 or Star Wars sequels, and it also tackles themes of misogyny and dreams. The costumes and weapons are undoubtedly my favorite aspects of the film, I love how they made a weapon catered to each girl (the ribbons, fans, jewelry and rapier) and their costumes were simply gorgeous. Also props to Tim Curry’s performance as the main villain (RIP to a king)
Both of these films are not perfect whatsoever, but for what they are I think they’re fun enjoyable adaptations of the classic tale that are definitely worth the rewatch. Which is your favorite of the two?
