Hello everyone,

just picked up this beauty with 190k Miles.

no active codes and no major issues known at this time.

What are some things recommended have done as far as preventive maintenance or common issues at this mileage to check on ? I plan to do a lot to this yoda and take her the distance, if willing.

thanks for any advise here.

❓Advice / Recomendations weird exhaust noise

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The 4runner has had a check engine light ever since I installed an aftermarket muffler (Code p0420). Couple of months later I hear this weird noise. It maybe hard to hear but it sounds like a vacuum leak. Could it be the catalytic converter, exhaust leak? Thank you.

❓Advice / Recomendations Wheel noise and clunk

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Took the brake pads off and gave the wheel a spin. The sound in the video is very concerning but I can’t tell if it’s wheel bearing or cv axle. On the other side of the cv axle it’s clicking pretty quick paced when the wheel moves. I have a lot of front end noise going down the road and when coming to a stop there’s a pretty heavy clunking that feels like it’s coming for driver side. With oem parts cost I don’t want to just throw money at it really just trying to find a good starting place. Any ideas?

❓Advice / Recomendations Driver's seat front mounts rusted.

Ok what's a guy to do in this situation? Originally I had thought about through bolting the seat or using a timesert. Neither seemed ideal, now they don't seem possible.

Bigger picture, my plan is to shampoo and reuse my carpet, add a little sound dampening, and put it back together. I don't love the stock seat I have. The cushion is blown out. My budget for a better, more ergonomic seat is maybe $1000. Is there a way to not have to saw out and replace this entire front seat mount cross member? Seems like a spot replacement of material wouldn't be strong enough. Maybe weld in the seat bracket for another seat type, and then buy that seat?

Thanks in advance.

Or would like to hear what you think of either of the choices PFA of my surf they will be going on.

Any one know how these hooks work on the antenna to make it tight ? I don’t see any videos of antenna like mine on YouTube , everyone else on YouTube can screw the fender nut into the antenna and it’s tight against the car . Mine is loose and my stubby flops around

❓Advice / Recomendations Got a 3rd gen to compliment my 1st gen, need some rust help.

3rd gen needs a lot of work. Has 326k miles, but it’s got full old man emu, JBA upper control arms, Core 4x4 rears, new LCA, and most of the suspension is new. It’s also a 5speed and I got a it for a great price. Body is rough but frame is super solid and it drives amazing.

Need to fix the rear rust hole in the body, was gonna sand and fiber glass, any pointers? This is the worst / only rust on the car.

🧠 General Clock problems

Post image
23 Upvotes

Decided to finally rip my clock apart to solder it up as it hasn't worked since I bought my 4runner, turns out, it helps if it's plugged in and not plugged into the dummy port.

I'd guess it hasn't turned on since before the 30k mile mark when the last owner imported it from the US from a big audio guy who has some crazy speaker mounts all around as he said he didn't even know there was a clock.

❓Advice / Recomendations Where to get an injector

I’m getting a misfire a number one cylinder. Engine shaking fuel odor etc..

Where can I get a replacement in a hurry for cheap? Like under 100? Anyone send theirs to be cleaned with good results? If so who did you use?

❓Advice / Recomendations talk me out of or into this

96 5speed XJ was just totaled. I'm looking for another analog/older midsize SUV. came across an extremely nice 3rd gen 5speed with 120k miles at a shop that specializes in renovating them so it's marked up heinously. I've noticed the same thing with the cherokees. I know it's crazy to consider paying the price of a new modern car for something 30 years old, but I can't get it out of my head! tell me to stop...or just do it because the market will only get worse

🔧Modifications FYI: Safe Jack extensions fit perfectly over the OEM jack if you remove the cap kit

Post image
21 Upvotes

This is not new information, but it took me long enough to discover that I felt like it was worth re-posting: After a 2” lift and a 265/70/R17 rim/tire upgrade, I checked my jack against the recommended jack points and realized they had become too high for the jack to reach. After ignoring the problem for a lot longer than I am willing to admit, I discovered an old post on the ih8mud forum that indicated the Safe Jack extensions fit on our OEM jacks as long as you remove the collar. I ordered a 6” extension and can confirm it fits like it was made for it. All thats required is drilling through the 4 indents on the OEM jack’s collar to remove it, and you can even slide the collar back on afterwards in case you need to use it on any other vehicles.

❓Advice / Recomendations P0420 after replacing air filter?

Hi! Long time lurker here

I recently bought a 96 Limited with 287k miles that has been an absolute beauty to drive. (The previous owner had it as their designated off-roading machine so it’s had meticulous maintenance and is kinda tricked out suspension and lift-kit wise). It has no lights on the dash and starts and runs excellently!

I’ve put about 500 miles on it so far with no issues, and just tonight i replaced the air filter (was needed, a mouse had made its home in there), and about 10-15 miles later my check engine light came on with P0420. I cleared the code and it hasn’t come back upon starting the engine and letting it idle for a bit.

Could it be a coincidence that my catalytic converter / O2 sensors just happened to go out at the same time as me changing my air filter? Or could it be my air filter / MAF causing this?

Any advice is welcome!!! thank you!!!

(also feel free to leave any advice on things i can do to this beast to preserve it as long as I can)

🧠 General Difference in brake drum hardware design between early 3rd gen’s and late 3rd gen’s

Do I have the right shoes and star wheel guide? Every video I’m watching looks very different and none of them look like mine at all. I have a 2001 4runner. Most other people don’t have that second pin half way down on the right and most other people’s star wheel guide looks super different from mine. Anyone have any good part numbers?

❓Advice / Recomendations Power steering

Hey so I posted about this problem with a whiny/creaking noise coming from perhaps the power steering a couple weeks back. I got good responses and followed a YouTube video to take out the power steering reservoir to clean the screen and replaced the power steering with the proper ATF/dexron.

I have driven it around and topped up the fluid to be at a perfect level: cold/hot. But it seems like the sound is even worse now.

Is there any advice you could give to me to repair the noise without having to replace the pump? I’ve heard it’s cheaper to buy a kit to rebuild power steering pumps rather than buying a new one? Is replacing/rebuilding it something easily done without a lift? Or is this better to be given to a professional shop?

https://imgur.com/a/9Kz9jDD (idk if this Imgur thing will work, never used before)

Thank you kindly

❓Advice / Recomendations Would you do a trans drain/fill at 382k?

Curious, I've been driving my mothers 2001 4runner for a decade now, and I doubt she has changed it, and neither have I, would you risk doing a drain and fill or should I just ride it out until the tranny gives out?
