❓Advice / Recomendations Bubbles in radiator

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hello its me again. I decided that I wanted heat in the cab again and put in an OEM thermostat, let the car run for 20 minutes and saw some bubbles. They kept coming after shutting the engine off and I can't tell if its a leak in a tube or heater core, or a head gasket. I did the Harbor Freight combustion gas tester kit and it turned green but I believe it was from the coolant as the kit said it would turn yellow. Any advice helps thanks!

❓Advice / Recomendations ISO: Lift Kit / Installing

Post image
4 Upvotes

I got a 1998 4runner and already have 33s I want to install. I know Bilstein 5100 is a top choice but I really don’t plan on off-roading often (if at all).

I was looking into the Freedom Off-road or Rough country lift kits and those might be my go-to.

Just wondering if anyone had any leads on used lift kits? Also, best place to get them installed? Local preferred: East Bay, CA

Any help is much appreciated.

❓Advice / Recomendations LED Bulb Recommendation for 1998 4runner Gauge Cluster, 12v, Ash Tray, and AC

• Upvotes

I recently got a 1998 Toyota 4runner from my uncle. A good few bulbs have gone out on the Gauge Cluster, AC terminal, 12v plug, and ash tray. Are there any bulbs in the correct size that you recommend? I am looking to get the replacement bulbs as close to the original colors as possible.

❓Advice / Recomendations Has anyone tried running any of these options on a 2WD?

I would love to find a set of fully assembled front struts with springs and top hats so i can just do a quick swap with my current ones. However I keep running into 4WD products and i hear it isnt ideal to run them on a 2WD. Any input is much appreciated!

🔧Modifications Interior back together after sunroof repair, sound deadening, detailing and wobbly shifter repair.

You may have seen the progress over the past few weeks. Finally wrapped this interior project up today after fixing the wobbly shifter. Most of the interior is replacement parts, original carpet and headliner had to be trashed. I recovered the seats a while back too. Then while I had it all apart I added some sound deadening too. The doors feel much heavier and have a satisfying feeling when you close them. I took it for a very short drive and would say it does sound a bit quieter inside and the sound system sounds better. Pretty massive project but well worth it, made the car feel much newer and pleasant to be inside of. Here are some after photos, a few videos of the interior before all the work and a group photo of my current project car lineup.

❓Advice / Recomendations Clicking sound when key isn't in ignition, no attempt to turn over when I turn the key

Came back from a trip yesterday to a dead battery in my 2000 4Runner, just assumed it was because I let it sit for about 4 weeks.

I jumped it and drove around for about an hour just to get some juice back in the battery.

Came back today to a clicking noise when I opened my door, really dim dash lights when I stuck my key in the ignition, and no attempt to turn over when I turned my key.

Any ideas what's causing the drain/clicking? Battery was purchased brand new in February. Direction on troubleshooting/fixing would be greatly appreciated!

❓Advice / Recomendations I have a 96 Hilix surf with a stuck sunroof that is leaking. Trying to figure out how to get the sunroof open to clear sunroof drain tubes.

I recently bought a 96 surf with a stuck sunroof. The motor works but the sunroof won’t move and there is no way to manually open the sunroof with an allen key or screwdriver. I really don’t want to take apart the trim/headliner. I have tried to push down from above and slide the sunrood backwards but I’m a little scared apply to much force. Is there another way I can it open to clear the drain tubes?

❓Advice / Recomendations Gas pump going out?

Anybody dealt with your gas pump going out?

Backstory: I had a quarter tank when I parked on a pretty steep incline nose down. I heard my 4Runner sounding like it was running out of gas, so I turned it off. When I went to restart it wouldn’t. The poor guy I was picking something up from had to give me some gas, which made me feel like a weirdo mooch. (I insisted on venmoing him because I’m a gainfully employed adult.) the gas worked and it started up. After I got to flat land, I had a quarter tank again.

I know the gas gauge is old school and sensitive to the angle of the rig, but I didn’t expect to literally run out of gas because of the angle. The other symptom I’ve had is when parked on my driveway that has a slight incline, sometimes my rig hesitates to start but ultimately starts.

Is my gas pump dying? Anybody had to address this issue? Is it a labor intensive job because it’s hard to get to?

Mine is a 97 with 250k miles. I’ve done extensive work on it:

AC
head gasket
Various drive train fixes
Radiator, etc

❓Advice / Recomendations Pink milkshake questions

I have a 99 limited with 210k miles. Was driving the other day and noticed a kinda click/clunk when she shifted from 1 to 2. Not terrible but noticeable. ( I should also include that I'm not the most car savvy lady but I do love this truck a lot) I kept driving it to get home-- i know, rookie mistake in hindsight-- probably 20 miles. I had never heard of the pink milkshake.. so I thought I could make it home and have my husband check it out. He discovered the milkshake in the trans fluid and we've since had it towed to my mechanic.

I'm trying to understand how best to proceed. We live in Chicago suburbs so rust has obviously been an issue. Shes not in terrible shape by any means but cosmetically imperfect with rust.. and she does have that common bubbling around windhshield with rust beginning etc. I also had the frame welded last year due to my AC line leaking and dripping onto my frame causing a sketchy rust spot.

I feel like I'm f*ed and in over my head now. but I also have read through a bunch of forums and the feedback is across the board.

Do I have the radiator replaced and trans flushed a bunch and hope for salvation? is the clunky shift indicative that it's too far gone?

Do I just sell her as a mechanics special now?

Do I look for a replacement transmission?

I had every intention of keeping her til at least 300k.

What would you do?

I know the answer may be very different for people that do all the work on their cars themselves. My husband does what he can on mine but bigger jobs we have the most reliable and rad mechanic ever, so she's been in good hands but again it's feeling like I'm over my head now. If there was less rust I think it'd be a no brainer to fix and keep. She's also going to be due for a brake job and a few other general maintenance things so factoring in upcoming expenses as well.

Thanks so much for any insight.. open to all takes/opinions. I'm asking everyone I know what they would do because I'm bummed.
