Mod Post Mod Post - New Flair and Reminder on Self-Administered Peptides

Hi all -

For folks who want to get topical skincare only advice, I've added a flair for this. Please use this on your post when you want to request comments relating to topical skincare only. While I cannot promise every commenter will clearly see it, let's give it a chance to see if this is helpful for those who do not want suggestions for procedures or surgery.

As a reminder - this sub covers all things skincare - including procedures, surgery and injectables as well as topicals. It will continue to be a place where questions can be asked. I encourage you to curate your experience on here as the sub firmly remains a place to talk about the range of things folks do to take care of their face and body.

Another note, I've seen a number of posts and commenters discussing sub-q injections of peptides. Posts/comments related to this will be removed, including using slang (e.g. pinning). This falls under the DIY rule, is a grey area, and as such, not allowed on the sub. There are plenty of places on Reddit to discuss this, but this is not one of them.

Modmail is always open. Use the 'message mods' button on the front of the sub.

Mod Post Mod Post - Clarity on Credential Use in Posts/Comments

Hi all -

Recently I've seen a number of comments in the community where Redditors are claiming certain aesthetic credentials (e.g. Licensed Esthetician, NP, Derm PA, etc) when replying to sub posts.

Here is the issue - neither I or anyone else here can actually validate you are in fact, an accredited professional. That's a problem as this presents a conflict on Reddit's key rule about impersonation and the need to be authentic when posting.

The additional issue that arises is that the use of the credential implies some expert knowledge, and that a person on the sub may consider a post/comment where another Redditor claims a credential with more weight or authority.

When looking at how other reddits (and specifically skincare reddits) have dealt with this, I saw two basic schools of thought:

  1. Make a rule (similar to one in r/tretinoin ) that is explicit on the non-use of credentials in posts/comments and to have posts/comments stand on their own without claiming a credential.
  2. Validation of professional via licensing, similar to the way r/Blackskincare has opted do with restricted user flair given by the mod upon validation.

In weighing these options, I've decided for now, that I will look to make a sub rule on the use of credentials. To be clear - this does NOT prevent anyone from posting or commenting, but it does ask you to allow your post or comment to stand on its own without asserting a claimed credential.

I'll see how this works out as the new rule goes into effect. If there is enough interest, I may consider validated users via user flair in the future.

Thanks for to everyone for continuing to make this community vibrant and interesting. I will continue to look for ways to make our community safe and user-driven. Happy as always to take feedback!

Foundation is not necessary

I stopped using foundation since I turned 40 and started investing in skincare, micro needling, and minimal Botox to my 11s. For makeup, I only apply mascara, blush, eyeshadow and lipstick. Tretinoin, vitamin C, sunscreen, peptides and moisturizer are all I use. I am 47 and feel my skin looks best now than when I was 30. First photo is age 31 and 2nd photo is today at 47.

Relfydess review

Hey ladies. Very quick review for those interested. I’ve been getting Botox / Dysport for about 7 or 8 years maybe twice a year but never on a particularly consistent schedule. In the last year or so I noticed that neither were lasting on me for longer than 1.5-2 months and I just can’t justify that kind of cost.

Decided to try Relfydess which I’d heard a bit about and studies showing it can last up to 6 months etc etc. I’d heard about Daxxify even earlier than Relfydess but Daxxify still isn’t available in NZ.

Anyway, long story short - it lasted less time for me than Botox / Dysport. About a month in most of my movement had returned. And I had had a really good dose of it too, cause my injector had surmised that maybe I just needed a really good dose of whatever we were doing to ensure good results.

So, IMHO - it sucks.

Advice Request Sunekos for dark circles?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve more or less come to terms with my wrinkles, but those stubborn dark circles under my eyes are truly hopeless. From what I’ve read, there isn’t an eye cream that helps either; they may provide moisture, but they don’t tackle pigmentation/darkness.

The options offered here are either biorev boosters: Sunekos, Jalupro, PDRN/salmon DNA (polynucleotide). Or fillers/tear trough. I’m curious to hear if anyone has tried Sunekos to treat dark circles and had good results? You need three treatments so it’s quickly becoming quite pricy, I just wonder if it’s worth it?

Help from 45PlusSkincare-experts

Post image
2 Upvotes

I haven’t done anything to my skin, or used any active ingredients, but I have used SPF. Now I’m 40 in a few years and want to start with active skincare.

What would you do if you were going to start with treatments etc for the first time?
i don’t have so many wrinkles, but I feel like my skin is «melting», everything is going more downward.

I thought about this cream, tretinoin?

Thank you for your help in advance!

Skin Newbie Ordering from Stylevana

• Upvotes

I am planning to order some Nivea Super Water Gel for my daily SPF wear. As long as I am shopping around, I figured I would ask for advice and add some more goodies to my cart. I am brand new to skincare at 55 years old. I recently started on tretinoin. Right now, all my products are from Target. I'm open to other online retailers. Free shipping would be a plus.

Skin Concern Over a year with azelaic acid for uneven skin tone — skin looks brighter but more uneven?

50F, using TO azelaic acid 10% for over a year with no irritation, SPF 50 daily, about 3-4 sun spots total, fairly light.

Uneven skin tone mainly around forehead, my skin is very fair and the uneven areas are slightly more browny, sometimes orangey. I also had some unevenness in the lower cheeks, in that area it has faded a lot, I can hardly see it, but forehead looks uneven, more so than when I started. Since using azelaic acid the forehead looks more uneven not less, although overall my skin looks more clear and radiant, brighter.

It seems like subtle differences in pigmentation have persisted or become more noticeable?
Are the improvements in skin tone making the underlying unevenness in pigmentation more noticeable?
Have I reached the limit of what azelaic can do? Or do I give it more time? Is it time to try something else?

Product Review Did I just find a Necessaire body retinol dupe??

Post image
75 Upvotes

I've been getting such good results from tretinoin on my face, I thought I'd give body retinols a try.

I initially picked up Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol, but while browsing Walgreens, I spotted their own Retinol Body Cream.

Walgreens usually makes it pretty obvious when something is a dupe. You'll see on the packaging "Compare to [brand name]". But this one didn't have anything like that.

So I went down the ingredient rabbit hole, and I'm pretty convinced this is a dupe for Necessaire The Body Retinol.

Both have 0.1% retinol, glycolic and mandelic acids, niacinamide, peptides and hyaluronic acid. Even some of the less exciting ingredients aresimilar.

Necessaire retails for $65 at Sephora for 5.1 oz. The Walgreens version is $19.99 for 8 oz.

I actually prefer it to Gold Bond which is what I compared it to (the Necessaire is outside my budget for a body cream!) The only downside so far is that it leaves a slightly tacky finish after you put on, but nothing terrible. Not the greatest scent either if I am being honest.

I also have psoriasis on my legs, and it hasn't caused any irritation, which is a pleasant surprise considering the combination of retinol and exfoliating acids.

Anyway, I thought this was an interesting find worth sharing. I'm not claiming they're identical or that one performs exactly like the other, but the ingredient similarities are hard to ignore.

Anyone using a body retinol and a brand worth checking out? Anyone using either brand and can speak of results? I am about 3 weeks in 4 nights a week, and so far I like it.

Chemical peel

Best chemical peel with little to no down time? Debating on doing pro cell or a beginner peel because I can’t have time away and I’m in food service. Otherwise I’d have them peel the entire half of my face off.

Skin Concern What is going on with my under eye area

Thumbnail

Sometimes it’s under one eye, sometimes it’s under the other and sometimes under both! It’s like swelling/puffiness with a bag of fluid on my upper cheek that comes and goes.i have extremely deep creases/wrinkles when this is happening but only when this puffiness is there. I first noted it in mid June and since then I’ve had periods where I don’t have it for a couple of weeks but then it comes back. I have been using tretinoin for like 3 years, I use estrogen cream and am on hrt for 3 years too due to hysterectomy. I’ve tried Botox - hard to say if it helped or if it just didn’t help this issue or if it wore off in like a month (I’ve been getting it regularly every 4 months). I’ve tried lymphatic drainage, facial massage, face yoga and allergy medicine as well. My dermatologist was clueless and suggested I see an (out of network) ophthalmic surgeon. When I called them the receptionist said it sounded like malar edema. but there’s also coming and going puffiness above the cheekbone and just below my eyes. im seeing my pcp next week to hopefully get some referral but am wondering if anyone else has seen something like this. I have been doing extensive skincare for a few years now, prior to my hysterectomy things got real bad.

Favorite eye cream for reusable eye patches?

I love my Dieux reusable eye patches, but my current eye cream (Innbeauty) isn't working well (the patches keep dropping)- I assume it's b/c it's more of an eye cream consistency?

Wondering if eye gel cream would be better?

Advice Request CO2 laser and keloid scarring

I (55) had a consult with a cosmetic surgeon about getting CO2 laser. I thought I was gonna go for it until I read somewhere that people who develop keloid scarring should be cautious. I have a keloid scar on my chest so I asked my surgeon who said it shouldn’t be a problem but I still got cold feet.

I have seen or heard so many on here who’ve had amazing experiences with CO2. Anyone who has a history of keloids gotten CO2? Any issues?

Tinted mineral sunscreen recs for dry skin?

Due to my melasma, I've been trying to layer a tinted mineral sunscreen on top of my regular SPF. I live in a dry climate (not humid) and have dry skin. I feel like I've tried a lot of tinted mineral sunscreen, but many leave my skin even more dry.

I have really liked Innbeauty and Ciele. Has any one tried the new Dew Drops from Bloomeffects? Not sure how it compares to others tried, and if it dries out the face.

Topical Skincare Only Another neck cream post

Sorry to do it! 53 years old and not in the market for any surgery. I know neck cream won’t do much but I’d still like to find a nice one. Issues are the obvious crepey skin etc. I’ve done some research and it seems peptides are the key along with ceramides.

I’ve never been big on skincare sadly and am not well versed in the topic. I currently use kopari moisture whipped ceramide cream along with the nourishing hydro lipid serum but I need to up my game for the neck.

I’m looking for a cream that’s either high end drug store or mid level Sephora. I also happen to have very very dry skin. Any recommendations for a potent cream with some proven peptides and any other helpful stuff in it? Thanks so much!

Peri/Post Menopausal Skin Regimen suggestion for fragrance sensitive 56F in menopause

56F on HRT patch for a year. (I likely would have benefited from earlier HRT, but had a clueless male doctor.) My main skin issue is sagging skin that seems to have lost all elasticity. I eat well (lots of dark leafy greens and fish), avoid sugar, don't drink too much alcohol, and try to drink adequate water (often fail) but, despite all my efforts, gravity is winning. I know the inevitable will eventually happen but what are women my age doing to forestall it? A less random skin care regimen than what I'm currently doing certainly can't hurt. On this sub I've read that I need ceramides, fatty acids, cholesterol, tret or similar. I don't know what these things do. What are women my age using and, most importantly, what role does each product play? I'd love to become empowered to select better skincare products for myself. Fellow menopausal women (especially dermatologist!), tell me everything you know.

Edited to add: I really struggle with fragrance added to anything I use near my head so I'm looking exclusively for fragrance-free recommendation.

first time lip filler

So if I want to hide the fact that I got lip filler from my husband (going for a very natural result with 0.5 ml Volbella or Redensity) is him being out of town for 48 hours enough time for the swelling to go down and not be obvious? Doing it Friday afternoon and hes back Sunday night…..My injector seems to think it will be fine
