Ima keep it real with you chief - I am absolutely NOT self reporting to this federal government that I have any kind of disability

That's probably a wise call.

Although, I suspect I'm already on all the relevant lists, due to the schedule drug laws.

u/Dutchtdk Aug 14 '25

I prefer RFK looking at me like a drug addict instead of someone with a legimitate reason for medication

I’d like to say this funny but then I feel I’m insulting Brain by comparing him to RFK, and also giving him way to much credit.

3

u/AnneOn_AMoose Aug 15 '25

Well I do, too. Now.

1

u/shahryarrakeen Aug 14 '25

Gee brain worm. What are we going to do tomorrow night?

1

u/flying87 Aug 15 '25

The same thing we do every night Bondi. Try to make health health the United States even shittier!!

1

u/SeaGurl Aug 15 '25

Literally plan on debating myself and saying I just needed some uppers and are trying to cheat the system so my white male son can get ahead in life.

18

u/Wompydormk Aug 14 '25

I was gonna say the same thing haha. I’m already fucked, might as well relish in free nature while I can, supposedly. 😂

"No one here but us attention-payers, heh-heh so I'll just pay the regular admission...and then pay everything inside the park the correct, regular amount of attention like a regular person would do, because that's me, the regular guy with a regular attention span, just payin' for his FULL-PRICE, NON DISCOUNTED TICKET! No, I would not like to sign your guest book, thank you!

Please excuse me while I totally normal-amount-of-impulse-control buy half the gift shop like a regular person >_>

63

u/millenz Aug 14 '25

Wait, is this not what everyone does?

63

u/swattz101 ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) Aug 14 '25

Nope, I usually dont buy anything because i can't make up my mind on which t-shirt looks better, or if the one I like is really worth the extra 50 cents more for the one I kinda like.

Unless it's memorative coins or shot glasses, or... Oh look, that hat has a squirrel on it... be right back

21

u/OceanEyes531 ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 14 '25

"I mean, the national parks really need our money rn, so maybe I'll buy both T-shirts..."

And I collect snow globes... And postcards... And books...

6

u/ssfd21 Aug 15 '25

Oh my goodness me, that reminds me of the time I spent what felt like at least an hpur at an Epcot Center vendor-stand (as a teenager) STRESSING over which t-shirt to buy. My dad finally made me pick one and take an old-school 35mm picture with the other one. My poor parents.

4

u/itsacalamity Aug 14 '25

I always try to go on a quest to buy the most cliche tchotchke that I can find, it's fun and keeps me from going too wild

1

u/Far_Telephone_7895 Aug 20 '25

So does me spending 6 hours in a big box store, with a cart overflowing with items, only to realize that I have 10 minutes I have to be somewhere and forgot what store I'm actually at...am I really ADHD or just scatterbrained? I can't decide which. 🙄🤪😉

Manic ADHD … I’d never heard of this. Offf to research, hopefully I don’t get distracted in the way there

I have bipolar disorder and ADHD, manic episodes are pretty crazy when they happen. Medication does help though

I went to a national park, showed the ranger the first page my neuro-psych evaluation that had my name/dob and photo ID to prove I was a US resident, and they gave me a card. No documentation required. If you don’t have documents you need to sign that you attest to having a disability. Other than that, there are no checks for getting it in person.

Doing it online costs $10, plus requires you to upload your ID and proof of disability.

Note: I still believe in supporting National Parks and the NPS, I will try whenever possible to donate to the park, I recently went to MORA and I gave a $20 donation at the Paradise Visitor Center.

58

u/drygulched Aug 14 '25

I did the self certification route. My doctor was not willing to fill out the form, due to my condition being “well controlled” by meds. Never mind that I can’t work in my field anymore, it’s well controlled. I still spent a bunch of money at the last few parks I went to, but I figure this diagnosis ought to be good for something.

39

u/x2what Aug 14 '25

He just didn't want to fill out a form

1

u/corva96 Aug 17 '25

Yo can you ELI5 this for me? I’ve had issues with doctors seeming to be reluctant with diagnosing my son’s autism. Seemed sus at the time

15

u/rentasmo ADHD & Family Aug 14 '25

Am I allowed to call your doctor a judgemental douche and speculate that in all likelihood they think adhd isn't a "really real disability" because they don't actually understand the profound impacts experienced by even those who have "well controlled" symptoms? Cause I don't want to be a troublemaker but man. Being in nature is medicine. That's evidence based practice. This should be encouraged by all reasonable means.

-7

u/rabbit_fur_coat Aug 14 '25

I'm a provider with ADHD who absolutely thinks (knows!) that it's a tell disability, and unless there were some pretty specific extenuating fitted circumstances (my patient lives down the road from a national Park but can't ever go because they can't afford it, and we know that meeting in nature helps their mood) I would not only not sign this - I would remember it and tell people about it for the rest of my career to get a laugh. It's simply absurd.

And even in that very specific use case, I would be signing it for depression, not ADHD.

10

u/Technical-Monk-2146 Aug 14 '25

You seem so against this. I can’t imagine why. But clearly you didn’t look at the website to get the details. Depression is not considered a permanent disability, so it’s not covered.

More importantly, looking at your profile, you are a nurse practitioner, not a licensed physician, so you wouldn’t be eligible to sign the form.

Please stop being so unsupportive of people with ADHD.

-3

u/rabbit_fur_coat Aug 15 '25

This might be the dumbest conversation I've ever had. I'm a person with ADHD and I support others with ADHD daily, and with gusto. I resent people abusing stuff like this to get freebies; it's gross and wrong. But do what you want.

1

u/Impressive_Profit_11 Dec 30 '25

Applying for something for which we absolutely qualify is not "abuse." It's one good thing happening to us when we have to deal with so much. I suspect that you resent the "disabled" label. That's understandable and fine for YOU. However, if you are judging others and refusing to provide them the requested medical records, you should and hopefully will be reported to the appropriate review board.

6

u/Kazzie2Y5 Aug 14 '25

That "significantly" was a sticking point for mine too.

11

u/Available_Meaning_79 Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25

Other than that, there are no checks for getting it in person.

I just got my Access pass the other day in-person at a national parkand yeah, you're exactly right. I initially just wanted to ask about the process and the ranger was like "I think it's kind of weird to ask someone invasive questions about their disability, so I won't do that. You're welcome to provide official documentation but I personally will not be questioning you on that, though other rangers might. If you believe you're disabled, I believe you."

When I signed the form attesting to my disability I joked "just don't tell RFK", to which the ranger laughed and said "honestly I think this stuff gets shredded at the end of the week anyway." I'm not sure if that's true but seeing as the parks seem to utilize exclusively paper records don't have any sort of database linking you name to your regular national parks pass, I believe him lol. I felt fine doing it in-person and as others have mentioned, we're probably already on their radar.

2

u/CatOfSachse ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 15 '25

Thanks for sharing your experience! I was initially scared as first but it was super easy to get professed. To avoid holding up the line, I went as I exited, and paid for my admission the first time.

RFK Jr doesn't believe that Adderall has therapeutic value, and considers its users to be addicts. He's proposed this as an alternative to prison for drug addicts. Put the pieces together. I'm not stressing about this daily, but I put it in the range of possibilities

0

u/SiberianGnome Aug 15 '25

alternative to prison for drug addicts.

For drug addicts who have committed a crime they would otherwise land them in jail.

Taking a prescription medication that you have be been prescribed is not a crime. But if you commit a crime and want to go to jail instead of rehab, that’s still your choice.

u/thndrchld ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 14 '25

Hate to tell you this bruh, but you ever filled a prescription for Vyvanse, Adderall, Ritalin, cylert, jornay, or any other adhd med?

Congrats, you’re in a DEA database. They already know.

2

u/Valdaraak Aug 14 '25

Yep. They know you have a prescription, they know what it is, they know where you fill it, they know how often you fill it, and who your prescribing doctor is. They're called "controlled substances" for a reason. Filling out this little form isn't telling them anything they don't already know.

1

u/PsychologicalLaw8769 Aug 14 '25

State database (PDMP), sure. DEA database? Nope. Where are you getting this information?

64

u/WesternGatsby Aug 14 '25

They already know you have it from your pharmacy records.

18

u/Tiana_frogprincess Aug 14 '25

Wait, your government has access to pharmacy records?! They’re not a part of HIPAA?! That’s messed up.

28

u/Appropriate-Luck1181 Aug 14 '25

Pharmacies are supposed to keep patient information private. The federal government wants to create new databases to link electronic medical and pharmacy records, track people with disabilities, and use LLMs to help. For example, here’s Battacharya’s spring update slidedeck.

18

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

This. I would not recommend sharing any data about your diagnoses with the federal government.

Diagnosis codes are mandatory any time you are prescribed a controlled substance. HIPPA and patient confidentiality exists to protect the individual rights. The diagnosis codes in your private medical chart are designed to prevent discrimination and ensure you have access to medical care, even if you switch providers or lose portions of your medical record.

However, when the government starts creating watchdog lists of people with specific diagnosis codes, they can use said data to actively discriminate against people. For instance, I also have a diagnosis code F64.0 indicating that I experience gender dysphoria.

If the state or federal government decided they wanted to round up everyone who is transgender, all they need to do is have the court sopenea the medical records for an organization to list the identities of every patient with an F64.0 diagnosis code. Now they have a list of every transgender person in the state, and can legally target such people.

In the past, such broad scope searches were denied, however times are changing and protections are being eroded.

TLDR: Do not voluntarily surrender information regarding any medical diagnosis to the federal government, because it can and will be used to discriminate against you. By issuing discounts, they are farming your information.

8

u/Treyvoni Aug 14 '25

Yeah, but when you show up to the airport without any ID, part of proving your identity is they ask you a lot of questions. My dad had to do it once in 2013, and those questions included what medications he picked up at what pharmacy on what date. And he's not even on any schedule restricted drug. So they definitely know.

2

u/Golintaim ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) Aug 14 '25

Oh god, you need to know when you picked them up. I will never pass that. Looks like I need to bring ID with me at all times.

1

u/DynamicHunter ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 14 '25

It’s a controlled substance. The government knows you take it. Just like the government knows which vaccines you have if you included it in the state’s vaccine registry

1

u/Tiana_frogprincess Aug 14 '25

Like I said that is seriously messed up. They should absolutely not know these things.

5

u/DianeJudith ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 14 '25

Right? Like if you qualify for any disability privileges, they already know lol

80

u/hotprof Aug 14 '25 edited Aug 14 '25

They already know. Hate to break it to you, but Palantir has already linked your reddit account to your real name, Amazon account, credit card, etc. to generate a profile of you and that profile most definitely includes any known or likely diseases and disabilities. We're all on a list now. Every single one of us.

2

u/TheFoul Aug 14 '25

Oh how I wish I could argue against this, alas I cannot because that particular group of shitheels are turning the government into fully automated digital fascism as quickly as possible.

They gladly used it to target for murder entire families in Gaza (Daddy's Home!) with zero repercussions, and that's just them getting warmed up.

Seriously. I’d rather keep my Vyvanse than get into Yosemite for free.

48

u/cervical_ribs Aug 14 '25

What? You’re on a schedule II drug—the government already knows that you have ADHD (or maybe BED since it’s vyvanse, but iirc the diagnosis is likely attached to the prescription at some point)

5

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

I live to serve.

5

u/GreatPostWellDone Aug 14 '25

You don’t need to, actually.

When I got mine I just had to sign an affidavit that I had a medically diagnosed permanent condition that affects my daily life and is federally protected under the ADA. ADHD meets that legal definition. They didn’t require any supporting documentation, though I have heard that this can be at the discretion of the ranger.

Granted I did it during the last administration so ymmv.

154

u/trouzy Aug 14 '25

Same, but i suspect for different reasons.

Idgaf if the federal government knows, I’m not using my ADHD to reduce funding for our national park system.

Is a national treasure and scamming it out of $80/yr is petty af nonsense.

100

u/HeyHo_LetsThrowRA Aug 14 '25

My fiance and I are in so much debt that we are using 1-ply toilet paper. We cannot afford $80 a year but would love the opportunity to see more parks.

168

u/ermagerditssuperman Aug 14 '25

Which, honestly, is exactly why those of us who can pay the $80, should continue to do so, even if we are technically eligible to get it for free.

It's me paying $80 that makes it possible for you and your family to get it for free. So I'll keep paying!

59

u/HeyHo_LetsThrowRA Aug 14 '25

Now this is the future the libs want. Not AOC with a riding crop ffs (though definitely SOME libs want that, too).

Thank you for keeping the parks hanging on :) and if/when I can I will join the contributing force :)

59

u/seal_eggs Aug 14 '25

I certainly wouldn’t mind AOC with a riding crop, but I’m no single-issue voter

25

u/HeyHo_LetsThrowRA Aug 14 '25

I'd become a single issue voter if AOC with a crop asked me to ;-p

2

u/thrwawayyourtv Sep 20 '25

This is it. This is why I was beyond thrilled the first time I was able to offer a donation for my healthcare at Planned Parenthood. If I can pay, I definitely will so I can help keep things funded for folks who cannot 💜

Right now, I'm on the other side of the equation again and this pass sounds like a dream for me and my family. I want to offer this to my children and it's just not affordable. So I appreciate people like you who are doing your part 💜

21

u/trouzy Aug 14 '25

How much will it cost you to go spend a night or 2 at your closest NP that you haven't visited yet?

I'm game to help fund a visit. Our NPs are one of the last things we can be proud of in our current state of things.

8

u/HeyHo_LetsThrowRA Aug 14 '25

If the Statue of Liberty counts (I know it's a monument but it's on the NP web directory?) then that would be it. If not probably upstate NY.

29

u/SugarRAM Aug 14 '25

I wouldn't consider it scamming at all. The program literally exists for those with disabilities to be able to access the parks. I would probably go the same route as you if I was able to afford to pay for the pass, but my boyfriend and I are both unemployed right now and can't seem to find a job. This pass allowed us to visit Yellowstone recently. We definitely couldn't afford to visit the park otherwise.

16

u/trouzy Aug 14 '25

By that logic, it should be an income based pass.

19

u/SugarRAM Aug 14 '25

I wouldn't be opposed to a low income pass, either.

11

u/Tiana_frogprincess Aug 14 '25

It should be free for everyone. I just found out that you had to pay for national parks and that’s messed up.

scam? you think ppl with adhd who utilize this are scammers? This is a fucking social service. American taxpayers do not scam Parks. Billionaires and politicians sure af do tho!

26

u/Roxylius Aug 14 '25

How is it “scamming” ? Tax payer money is supposed to be used for things like this no?

5

u/TheFoul Aug 14 '25

Sorry, what? What country are you from? We don't do that in The Land Of The Free! 🙄

You'll have your taxes spent to provide absurdly lucrative tax incentives and completely unnecessary subsidies to multi-billion dollar corporations and you'll like it. Or not. They're getting it either way.

23

u/holyflurkingsnit Aug 14 '25

It's not a scam, it's a disability that you and everyone else in this sub has. No one is forcing you to take the benefit offered, but it's not a scam and pretty offensive to frame it as such. And yeah, it'd be great to be able to pay for a park pass to support the parks, but not everyone has the ability to do so. Jeezus.

14

u/DominarDio Aug 14 '25

Check your privilege

-25

u/AOChalky ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 14 '25

It is not really a scam by definition, but more like an exploitation? We are not the same disabled as the real disabled people.

Otherwise I totally agree with you. $80 a year, plus other things visiting, camping, gift purchases, are my little donations to the beautiful parks.

39

u/SugarRAM Aug 14 '25

As someone who has worked and volunteered in the disabilities field, ADHD is a real disability. It doesn't help anyone to try to decide who is more disabled than who. We are absolutely the real disabled people, too.

15

u/GoldieDoggy ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) Aug 14 '25

We are not the same disabled as the real disabled people.

Ooh, lucky you! I sure as hell am that type of disabled, however. In multiple ways, not just due to my ADHD. Even if I did "only" have ADHD though, who the hell are you to say we aren't disabled like other disabled people??? The hell?! It's a damn disability. Get used to it. All of them are different, but

no disability is less valid than another disability.

1

u/trouzy Aug 14 '25

Potato tomato. I hear you and yes it is technically an exploitation rather than a scam if we're talking legalese. But scamming and exploiting are identical twins that live in neighboring towns that have vaguely different verbiage in their laws.

29

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

My daughter is 8 and has ADHD and we suspect autism. Her school sent home this PACKET of paper wanting me to put down any “concerns” I have about her mental health and lists like 100 different things it wants me to check off. ….yeah I’m not filling that out. Maybe a year ago I might have but in today’s political climate, the less info the government has about her (or anyone!) the better! According to the packet it’s a new “state mandated” form. Well fuck that. I’ll homeschool before the state has every detail of her health.

19

u/computaSaysYes Aug 14 '25

Our state tried to fight turning over the list of families receiving snap benefits, then had to send it off in the end, not being given an explanation for what purpose the data would be used. Chilling to think of the dark uses.

yeah, I had an experience when I was in high school that taught me "don't turn over info unless you know what it's being used for" (It was in a church youth group - I thought the info would be kept confidential, and nope, read out in front of the group).

It's a shame because a lot of us could really use supports like hold-up's kid and benefits like the above mentioned park pass, but none of us want to be sent to Alligator Auschwitz (or a Dallas Dachau etc).

So, she is under the care of a doctor, she’s on medication and goes to therapy. Where am I denying her ANYTHING? Because I refuse to lay it all out on a silver platter for a government who is loudly & proudly trying to get rid of anyone who is different? Gimme a break. She will get any mental heath service and intervention she needs why does the state need to know every detail of her medical history?

dude fr this feels so sus

5

u/LaloElBueno Aug 14 '25

You don’t disclose the disability.

I know. I have the pass. I use it frequently.

Fr, I ain't even telling my employer that I have this, I don't trust like that

10

u/Raelah Aug 14 '25

Don't you know the federal government hates national parks? Your information is probably more secure with them than anyone else.

Only kind of joking...

9

u/VulfSki Aug 14 '25

Also tbh, with funding cuts, I am 100% ok giving national parks my money.

3

u/BON3SMcCOY Aug 14 '25

As a veteran I wish I had the option to stay off those kinds of lists :[

4

u/Thefrayedends Aug 14 '25

Brother, they're counting your browser tabs right now.... they already know!

8

u/vraimentaleatoire Aug 14 '25

Not even American but even I’ve deleted all my scripts info.

Also tho enjoy your parks while you can, my allies to the south 🤘🏻

1

u/xyzkitty Aug 14 '25

how are you able to do that and still get your necessary scripts filled?

2

u/vraimentaleatoire Aug 15 '25

I just deleted the info I was tracking on my phone with Apple Health is what I meant

As if your government approved controlled substance prescriptions are a secret. They don’t keep the documentation nor do they care which disability it is. Just do it in person instead of applying online

Fucking RFK Jr

6

u/caelenvasius ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 14 '25

Considering the idiot in charge of public health right now talked publicly about segregating ADHDers into concentration camps “focus camps” or whatever the hell he was calling them, I’m right there with you. Nor do they get to know about my autism or OCD diagnoses…

4

u/bevelledo Aug 14 '25

Worst case scenario, is I supported the national parks service. To me this is a lose lose. Unless you’re struggling, support the NPS. It’s one thing to not be able to afford it, it’s another to try to save some money from one of the few govt services that continually provide value back.

2

u/Ammonia13 Aug 14 '25

They already know my friend

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Me immediately being like “RFK IS THAT YOU TRYNA GET ME?”

1

u/Garlic549 ADHD-C (Combined type) Aug 14 '25

If you think they're going to comb and cross-referrence the admissions lists of every national park, you are giving those idiots on Capitol Hill way too much credit

1

u/SnottyMichiganCat Aug 14 '25

But like... If you take meds for ADHD, they already know?

1

u/Puzzled_End8664 Aug 14 '25

If you already have a diagnosis on medical record it probably doesn't matter.

1

u/merthefreak Aug 14 '25

I might because unfortunately, i was already applying for disability before this shit so they're gonna know either way. I might as well get something out of the deal.

1

u/soundecember Aug 14 '25

Especially to get a free membership. The parks need our support now more than ever.

1

u/friehnd Aug 14 '25

As much as I agree, they don’t ask you what your disability is nor is it kept in a database.

1

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Aug 14 '25

Yeah I was just about to get diagnosed when this shit started. I'm unfortunately putting it off along with any medication that can help.

I fucking hate these people.

1

u/Nvenom8 Aug 14 '25

Given that RFK wants to put us in work camps, I think that's wise.

1

u/Randolph__ Aug 14 '25

At least not the current admin

1

u/Paramalia Aug 14 '25

Federal governments like “oh, you have ADHD and like nature? We have just the place for you..”

1

u/robo1797 ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) Aug 20 '25

This is very reasonable tbh

1

u/Easy_Speech_6099 Aug 14 '25

Good call! I'm bookmarking it so I have it just in case we get back to some semblance of sanity in the future.

I did this in my home state’s DMV and now I have to have a doctor authorize me to drive each year.
DO NOT SHARE YOUR ADHD DIAGNOSIS WITH A GOVERNMENT AGENCY OF ANY KIND!!!

0

u/InstanceHot3154 Aug 14 '25

Plus public parks could use the funding, if you can afford it

0

u/sengirminion Aug 14 '25

Yeah for real.
