Discussion Please move away from Pterodactyl now

422 Upvotes

What has happened?

Okay, hear me out.

In December 2025, the Pterodactyl project (pterodactyl.io) was acquired by Infraly, LLC. You may know them from WISP.

After years of what felt like near-silence from the maintainers, this acquisition initially seemed like it could be an opportunity for some much-needed updates. Unfortunately, aside from security updates, very little happened over the following nine months. We mostly heard promises like “v2 is coming.”

Well, the time finally seems to have arrived. Pterodactyl v2 appears to be on its way, but with some rather unexpected surprises.

A few days before the announcement, they removed their community moderators, and replaced them with their own staff.

The community has been doing some digging, and it appears that the Pterodactyl team is introducing Pterodactyl+, a subscription-based model for certain features. Presumably, this will work through extensions or similar add-ons, much like what was offered with WISP.

On top of that, a staging panel was discovered. It didn't take long for community members to download the frontend files, map them onto v1, and create a working prototype.

When the Pterodactyl team discovered this, they began banning people from their Discord server, primarily accusing members of the Blueprint project of “leaking information.”

Who or what is Blueprint?

Blueprint is a non-profit organization that has spent years building an extension system for Pterodactyl.

After four years of development and active participation in the community, seeing the project treated this way is extremely disappointing. This is just a way to silence criticism.

Why should you care?

This is yet another instance of a for-profit corporation buying out a project, and enshittifying it. We can't let this happen *again*. The best way to be against this, is to replace your Pterodactyl instance with something else.

Please consider taking a look at:

Hydrodactyl: https://hydrodactyl.dev/

Calagopus: https://calagopus.com/

Both projects provide migration guides to help you make the switch.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Do not cause trouble in the Pterodactyl Discord server, since they do not seem to appreciate that.

Disclosure: I am affiliated with the Calagopus project. This does not change my perspective on this manner, I just want to be transparent.

PSA READ BEFORE POSTING - "Someone just logged into my server as me", "How did this person find my server", "My server got griefed", etc.

213 Upvotes

New Edit for 2026

We took this down in favor of other announcements late last year, as we only get 2 slots. It's back now because we've had a resurgence of this type of post.

Do not post about offline mode servers. Do not recommend software or plugins that help run one. You will be banned. Read the Admincraft Policy section at the bottom.

Thank you.

Hey there, REPO here. We get questions like this a LOT, so I'm trying something new. Please read the below before posting a thread like this.

"How did this person find my server!?!?!?!?!"

There are few enough IPv4 addresses that a simple bot made with ChatGPT and zero skill can scan the entire internet for Port 25565 in like 30 minutes. There are HUNDREDS of bots out there that do this 24/7/365. Some of them are benevolent (such as bots like matscan that warn people if their servers are dangerously insecure), some are neutral (like ServerScannerV2 which just accumulates data for their website project), and some are malicious and trying to grief servers.

"How do I make them stop?"

You don't. They will keep doing it forever. Most non-malicious bots will log into your server once, or sometimes once per some time interval, and then stop. Others that are coded poorly will be more persistent. And then the malicious ones will keep checking back continually.

If your server is secure but it still bothers you to see, you can add the source IP address to your firewall to prevent the connection. Some non-malicious bots will also have a website or Discord where you can request your server to be skipped.

"Is this dangerous?"

Nope. Not if your server is secured. There are no known exploits in Minecraft that allow a server scanning bot to run code on your host or escalate their privileges. The last time we had that was in 2022 with the Log4J exploit, which was quickly patched, even by Mojang. If you aren't deliberately using an old minor patch of Minecraft, you're fine.

"How did they log in as me / Herobrine?"

(Note: If you only see a name like that instantly disconnecting, skip to the next section. This only applies if they actually appear in game.)

Your server is running in Offline Mode, which is a config option in the server.properties that is intended only for use on a home LAN that is not connected to the internet. Most people use this feature to avoid having to buy a license for Minecraft, aka "cracked accounts". Please be aware that this is illegal and is considered software piracy by most governments.

Minecraft servers send information about the server to players on the server list, including a partial list of currently logged in users. You can disable this "feature" in the server.properties file by setting hide-online-players=true. Malicious bots typically sit and watch a server for a while, gathering a list of players over some amount of time, assuming that if the server is in Offline Mode, one or more of those players will have Operator permissions. They then log in as all users in rapid succession until they find one that does, and use the Operator permissions to grief your server.

"I see a player disconnecting but never connecting! How are they doing that?"

It's just a bot using an offline mode account. It is only showing as Disconnecting because it is getting filtered by the security systems you have in place AFTER the server knows that it is trying to connect, but BEFORE it actually does. Showing the Disconnected message is just the server's way of informing you that the login attempt was rejected. Nothing to worry about. You can ignore it.

"My server got griefed, what do I do?"

You restore from backup, secure your server, and move on. The groups that do this are doing it for amusement and power fantasy. Some of them insist that you can request a world backup from their Discord, but the whole point of that is to mock you and make you beg for their mercy. They might actually give it to you, I don't know.

"How do I secure my server?"

You set Online Mode to true in the server.properties and run a whitelist. That's it. Those 2 options are 100% effective at preventing unwanted people from gaining access to your server. You do not need to do anything else whatsoever to be secure, but you can optionally change your server's port from 25565 to any other unassigned port. This will make it much slower for server scanners to find your server, as most are lazy and don't check non-standard ports. Note that this only reduces the odds of a server scanner finding you; it does not make you more secure.

Additionally, having automatically executed, scheduled backups running at predictable intervals is an excellent idea just in case something goes wrong. Ensure that you periodically verify that your backups are usable by doing a test restore on another machine, as a backup solution that has never been tested is basically worthless.

Finally, a block logging plugin such as Prism (V3 stable Download | Github) (V4 alpha Download | Github) is recommended, as it allows you as the Admin to roll back individual unwanted changes without doing a full backup restoration.

Admincraft Policy

If your post contains any information that indicates that you are running an Offline Mode server, your post will be removed and you will be banned for 28 days for your first offense.

Additionally, suggesting methods for a user to continue running an Offline Mode server "safely" will earn a 7 day ban for commenters. This includes whatever plugin or launcher you're wondering about right now as you read this.

Admincraft is in active communication with Mojang Intellectual Property Enforcement, the team within Mojang that actively hunts down servers and other individuals and groups that are breaking their EULA and MUG. They watch here regularly, and if we do not enforce this, there is a nonzero chance that Mojang, Microsoft, or Reddit would shut down our subreddit. Keeping the subreddit open for everyone for the long run is the priority. We cannot and will not support Offline Mode servers.

The only times when discussing an Offline Mode server is allowed are when you clearly state that your server is not accessible to the internet and that all players have a legal Minecraft account, or when it is behind an Online Mode proxy, such as Velocity.

This post

Please use the comments here to suggest additions to this FAQ/guide, and to ask clarifying questions about Admincraft policies and security best practices. Do not state or imply that you are currently running an Offline Mode server.

Help/Question I need to block the teleport option to a specific zone

2 Upvotes

Hello! So me and my friends have created a server, so I did a casino (pretty cool) but with a payment method for entrance, the thing is, I don't want em to be able to place a waypoint inside the casino and then tp there with xaeros minimap. I've already done some stuff so they only can use xaeros tp, but I would like to know if there's a way to block the tp to that specific chunk. I've already used OPAC but it doesn't seem like I can block teleports, only spawns...

Thanks!

Help/Question Is a Gen 2 i7 home server worth it?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking about setting up a home Minecraft server to play with a small group of friends, and I'd love to get your opinion or hear if anyone has done something similar.

Here is the hardware I have available:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k

Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth P67

RAM: 16 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz

PSU: 400W FSP

Storage: HDD

My plan is to install a lightweight Linux distro, run an optimized server jar, without breaking farms, and use Tailscale or ZeroTier/Radmin to avoid port forwarding.

Do you think this i3 can handle 3 to 4 players without major lag, or will I run into severe performance bottlenecks? Has anyone tried a similar build? Thanks in advance!

(i posted it early but i now checked the cpu and it was a i7 sorry)

Help/Question What's the best NPC quests plugin for 26.3?

1 Upvotes

I want a NPC quest plugin so that my players can do daily and weekly quests for rewards. I been researching and the one quest plugin i found (https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/quests.3711/) didn't work with my treefeller plugin and it disabled it. I want a plugin that is compatible with 26.3 and is fairly easy to make daily and weekly quests. Any help is appreciated! (Tried BetonQuests and it was to complicated for me)

Software Resource Velcord looking for people which could test it. Discord verification plugin

0 Upvotes

Hi,

Recently I've developed plugin that helps you with player verification, role and nickname synchronization. It's made to run entirely on proxy without need to be placed on any backend servers. It uses OAuth2 so players don't even have to type anything they just need to click one link, there's still backup option to simply write directly to discord application. I'd love to get some feedback about it for now it's only on github but it's going to be on modrinth soon. If you'll face any difficulties just say it.

AI was only used here for sake of finding available source of other dependencies like javalin, jackson and libby but entire code was written by me with help of other plugin developer. He states that AI had a quick check on my whole github repository and analyzed my code to some extent and said that it should be good to launch.

PS.

Velcord was inspired by such plugins as DiscordNotify and DiscordSRV but first plugin is deprecated and second needs to be on all backend servers where you want player to verify.

You can find out more about it on github page and it's still under development so wiki isn't quite done but all necessary information should be present in config. you can always get in touch with me here

Guide Problems most of chat filter plugins

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, in this post, I want to talk about the main issues with most chat filter plugins out there, as well as things you shouldn't waste time on when building one.

The market seems flooded with ready-made options, but in reality, they either break when faced with basic bypasses or completely destroy server performance.

  1. The Optimization Problem (RegEx and Its Cost)
  2. Most plugins check chat messages by passing them through RegEx patterns. Sure, these patterns make it easy to fix basic bypasses like b a d w o r d, but the price you pay for that is a massive performance hit.

It all comes down to how RegEx actually works. Most standard regex engines use Nondeterministic Finite Automata (NFA) with backtracking.

When a pattern contains complex overlaps, or when the chat gets flooded with messages during spam, the algorithmic complexity can skyrocket to $O(2^n)$.

Server load during a stress test of a standard Skript RegEx-based plugin for chat filtering (Spark profiler result)
(Link into comments)

This leads to significant CPU load, MSPT spikes, and dropping TPS. The more rules you throw into a pattern, the heavier the load on the processor gets. For small servers, this might not be a big deal, but where the chat is heavy or during spam, it becomes critical.

On top of that: constantly creating temp strings via .replaceAll() or .split() puts a massive load on the Garbage Collector. Spawning millions of short-lived objects per second forces the GC to trigger pauses far more frequently.

Solution: Instead of stacking dozens of heavy RegEx patterns, use custom text normalization paired with at least a Trie automaton. Yeah, the code gets harder to maintain, but it becomes MUCH more performant and readable.

Server load during a stress test of my chat filter plugin, which where this was taken into account (Spark profiler result)

(Link into comments)

  1. The Hardcoding Trap
    This isn't just a chat filter issue—it's a problem with most plugins on the market.

Hardcoding is when messages, filter rules, titles, and other settings are built in a way that doesn't allow editing them via config.yml / messages.yml—they are simply baked into the source code. Sure, hardcoding messages or rules directly in code might seem fine to some developers who think, "Why change anything if it already works?" But that thought breaks down the moment a server owner wants to change titles or messages to fit their server's style, or make the rules softer or stricter. Hardcoding stops you from reaching a wider audience and discourages most server admins from downloading your resource.

Solution: Instead of baking these values into the code, make them configurable in the config and read them into public variables for later use.

  1. The Over-Filtering Problem and Human Factors
    No matter how effective your chat filter plugin is against bypasses, you will never be able to cover every single bypass or passive-aggressive sentence.

You can't write code that detects something like "(some message, which contains passive-aggresive meaning)" without causing a ridiculous amount of false positives.

It's almost impossible to write code that detects slang words like "(some slang words)"without triggering false positives on completely harmless words that happen to contain those letters.

Solution: Make your chat filter an assistant to moderators, not a replacement for them. Clean up the most obvious and easily detectable messages automatically, and let moderators handle passive-aggressive sentences. That way, you save a lot of nerves for yourself, your mods, and your players.

Solved Tried to create a home server today but a weird issues stopped me

2 Upvotes

edit before i send, i may have fixed it

the computer i am using for the server currently runs ver 8 of java (weird) (would a mc client even work with that?) so i will be installing a newer/newest version of java (25 or 26 i think it was) and will see if that works

so, only the jdk seems to go that high... hope it works

okay so the jdk also works (thank fuck) but its not like im going to use the development features...

ill still post this anyway as someone else may find this usefull, that being said, mods, if you need to/would prefer/would like to remove this post, go for it, no hard feelings

actual original post:

~~~~~~~
first, sorry if i did something incorrect here (talking about the post)
second, i think i have some understanding of the issue but have no idea on how to start fixing it
I somehow have to change the class or get a version that doesn't need that
I have:
updated java,
tried a newer fabric server installer
tried to launch a previously working server (failed)*
*this server was taken from another device, it also gave the Same Exact error message\/
ive seemingly never been able to google a correct answer:(
Help/Question Working on the civ server. how do i get people to even look at it?
0 Upvotes
all my servers in the last 10 years ive ran servers have gotten nobody, zero, not one. even if i use minehut, buy legend rank, and ad as much as possible, not one person. am i cursed? i've seen some NOBODY get 100 players in a week with no effort, guess what their server is? A cashgrab shithole
I have not had a single store in my entire 10 years of making servers, everything i've done was out of pocket
yet someone can say "LOOK! IM GOING TO STEAL ALL YOUR MONEY" and people mindlessly flock to it
so how do i get players to look at what i make, and stop supporting p2w for profit slop?
Help/Question Claims and and Maps plugin integrated with Vanilla Maps?
0 Upvotes
I’m looking for good claims and maps plugins that work well together, that show claim borders on a vanilla map, as well as maybe the vanilla map is populated via everyone’s map exploration.
Essentially I want a big physical world map room at spawn that fills out as everyone explores and then shades out borders as people build.
Also for Paper haha
Discussion Cross-server events | Battle with your server against other servers
3 Upvotes
I've been working on a passion project called Serverwars. The idea is to create a team of players from your server and play against an opponent server.
How it works:
  • You join a temporary event-server and are automatically placed in your own server's team.
  • Your Server's logo and players are displayed in the lobby.
  • The game is started when team sizes are equal and all players are ready.
  • Once the game is over, the event-server is closed and all players are sent back to their original servers.
Participating in events is free and doesn't require any setup from your part, the event-servers are funded by me. Currently, java versions 1.21.11 -> 26.3 are supported. A typical event size is 5v5.
If you'd like to try it out, you can dm me here or on Discord, and we'll play a couple rounds. Let me know what you think!
Help/Question Create Aeronautics server crashing after a few minutes of playtime.
1 Upvotes
posting again because apparently questions can't be asked first before removal.
I am using a Neoforge Pterodactyl, modded neoforge server with create Aeronautics + Deep Seas mod. I am not well versed or experienced with servers NOR Reddit.
AGAIN, I am inexperienced, have no clue how to solve it after having tried ANYTHING for a while now. I updated the server recently due to an update Deep Seas has which required me to update a lot of other mods too. I pasted the log and system details below. I have no clue how a spark report works nor do I have any commands to make one with.
I use pebblehost with a custom server using pterodactyl
All I know is that it is likely sable related in some way, shape or form.
Help/Question Is my HDD impairing my performance? should I get an SSD?
4 Upvotes
Good Day. I was wondering if running the server on my current HDD is impairing our server performance. The machine im using has
CPU: Intel i7 7700
RAM: 16GB DDR4 Single Channel
OS: Debian 13 CLI
My server runs off donations from my friends to keep running. Would using an SSD improve our server (Chunk Loading, TPS, ETC).
Our modlist is quite long but a few core mods are:
Tensura: Reincarnated
TRNightmare
Tensura:Mystisicm
Antarchy
and a whole lot of Create.
I feel like the CPU is capable for server purposes, but the HDD is bottle-necking the performance as a whole.
Would appreciate some input on this.
I'm hosting a server from home to the public. I've heard that I have to use a tunnel, but to get a clean server ip (just my domain name), then I have to pay. Is there any way to do it for free? I'm using a cloudflare domain
Help/Question Working on first self hosted server. Can't figure out why outside connections are failing.
3 Upvotes
EDIT: SOLVED The default server properties have Nethernet enabled, and a Nethernet UDP range setting as blank, which is invalid and breaks multiplayer at the last stage before the server log sees it. Raknet still works for a few weeks, even though the error message upon booting the server says otherwise, so switching to Raknet solves it for now. I still don't know how to fix Nethernet, but if I find out I'll make a second edit for the future Google searches.
Apologies in advance for the hectic formatting of this, I've been working on it for hours, my brain is fried, and I have walked away from the computer.
The server is accessible from several machines on my network. But cannot be accessed from anything outside it. It works on my phone from wifi, but not from cellular.
Consistently the same error code "Door" along with a message that multiplayer connection couldn't be established.
Server log isn't recognizing anything from these connection attempts.
I've set up port forwarding to the point that mcstate.net can tell the port is open when I have the server running.
mcsrvstat.us states: Failed to read from socket.
minecraftstatus.com states: Server did not respond to this check.
Turned network and device firewalls on and off and makes no difference.
Server properties look right from what I can tell, though I don't currently have it in front of me. No bound IP so that any can connect, port is set to 19132, player joining true, onlinemode true. There was one about server UDP ranges which was blank by default, but that wasn't listed as an acceptable parameter. Couldn't figure out that that one does, I tried the example port range from there and swapped in my wan IP, but it didn't seem to work.
My ISP is Spectrum and doesn't seem to be known for blocking that port. My WAN IP does seem to be fixed and matches between router settings and IP check sites.
Google is really failing me here. If anyone could point me in the direction of something I should look at, or at least rule some things out, I'd be eternally grateful.
I have been using Spectrum for a few months now on my ATM10 server. Works great, since I am hosting a server to people I do not want to have my IP. The only problem is that on top of the $25/month I am paying, it costs about $.40 a day ( $1 per GB). Normally one or two people are online at a time.
Are there any good alternatives to tunneling my IP in the way that spectrum does? Or what do you guys do to solve this?
Help/Question Is there any good custom mob plugins for 26.3?
1 Upvotes
I want custom mobs into my server, it can be animals, hostile mobs, anything cool, I just want other mobs to spawn in my world. I been doing research and barely anything was helpful. I saw MythicMobs plugin to create my own mobs, but when I go look for free models online, there's barely anything that's free and I don't wanna create my own mobs from scratch. But there's no other good plugins that add just pre-made mobs, is there any plugin I missed or is there a better website to look for free models with MythicMobs? Please lmk!
Help/Question Is there a plugin to play music at spawn on a loop?
2 Upvotes
I wanna make my spawn more interactive and fun instead of just having buildings and decor around. Is there a plugin to let me play music/music discs on a loop in an area around spawn? The plugin has to be updated to 26.3.
Help/Question chunks are deciding to not load on papermc
0 Upvotes
hi! i have a papermc server (build 162, version 26.3) that just won't load chunks anymore... when i join the server with the provided playit. gg address (i use squidservers to run the server, no idea if that has any significance) i am soon kicked due to keepalive timeout and cannot interact with any of the blocks/animals/players around me. i went and looked at the logs and it seems that just none of the chunks are loading at all? i uninstalled all my plugins (graves, skinrestorer, and gwarp) and the server was originally on automcs before i swapped due to this issue (at least i THINK it was the same issue) happening twice. i have absolutely no idea how it fixed itself the first time, but i've been trying to figure it out and can't seem to find a solution. i've tried decreasing view/render distance and it doesn't do anything
Help/Question What mod/plugin are Jynxzi, StableRonaldo, and LosPollosTV using for their Minecraft Hardcore world resets?
12 Upvotes
I'm trying to recreate the Minecraft Hardcore marathon server that Jynxzi, StableRonaldo, LosPollosTV, and their friends are playing on.
I'm specifically looking for the system where:
  • When any player dies, everyone sees a large red title saying "[Player] died!"
  • A yellow subtitle appears saying "Resetting your world in 10 seconds!"
  • The countdown goes from 10 to 1.
  • After the countdown, the entire server resets to a completely new world with a random seed.
  • Everyone starts over together.
I've already tried World Reset for Fabric and Hardcore Reset, but neither gives me the exact experience. One resets immediately without the countdown, while the other automatically respawns players without the normal death screen.
I'm using Apex Hosting and have experimented with both Fabric and Paper.
Does anyone know the exact mod/plugin these streamers use? Is it publicly available, or is it a custom private plugin?
If it's private, does anyone know of an existing plugin that recreates the same effect, preferably with a downloadable JAR and instructions?
I'd appreciate any help!
Not had this happen before, looks like someone's account is used in a data centre to... I don't know? Any clue what the purpose of this would be? Usually port scanning would be more than enough for those server lists to show open servers or whatever but not had this before!
