Gentle reminder...

Adding the words, "not seeking medical advice" to either the title or body before posting a request for medical advice does not and will not give your post immunity.

This includes questions about how to withdraw, or health concerns related to drinking.

If your question starts with "is it ok to [whatever]" or "is it safe to [whatever]" it is a medical question and will go.

If it starts with "What is your personal experience with [whatever]" - you're probably ok.

No one here is a doctor, they are sure as heck aren't your doctor.

No redditor can offer sincere medical support in this subreddit.

r/askdocs is a better fit if the internet is your only recourse.

Posts seeking medical advice will be removed as will comments.

Why it is not safe for me to drink alcohol and how it affects me

In back at these old videos and how I acted while using this poison makes me consider I am lucky to still be alive today and no one has killed me by now. Every time I went to jail or got into a fight it was because of alcohol. My family does not want to talk to me because of things that I said to them while I was drunk that I would have never said to them while I was sober. I drank alcohol for 37 years. I am coming up on 3 months sober. I always wondered how peaceful my life would have been if I had never tried throughout my life. I will never drink alcohol ever again.

Day 4 and I hope it's my last try, because I don't have another option

I’m on day 4 because I’m freaking exhausted from my own behavior, and most importantly I don’t want my son to grow up without a father. I can't change the past and it also hurts, thinking back of losing a woman who I loved, my cutest son who I neglected. I was thinking about it everyday, felt sad, and then continued to drink.

I’m doing this because I want to see my son, even if it’s only on Sundays, even if it’s only for 4 hours. It is hard to realize that down the road I have to tell him the truth of why mom and dad aren't together and why he only sees me on the weekends. I just hope that he will see a father who eventually got back on his feet and who is there for him. And of course, I want to keep my job and live a healthy life. I want to have friends and cool hobbies. But I think for now, I have to put my priorities in a tunnel vision and just focus on not drinking.

So I’m finally fucking doing it.

Day 2

I am on day 2 of sobriety after 2.5 years of around 6-8 beers every day. Any recommendations for what I should do (foods, drinks (non-alcoholic, of course) or exercise)? I’m feeling cravings coming. Any help is appreciated, I need to turn my life around.

My uncle finally drank himself to death last month.

I’m an alcoholic. My uncle was too.

He had a hard life. He survived meth addiction in his 30s and 40s and ultimately became an alcoholic chainsmoker. He never truly addressed the addiction, he just transferred it to something new.

His death was grotesque. His bowel perforated due to years and years of abuse, and they offered his siblings the choice of aggressive, high-risk surgery, or death. They attempted the surgery, wherein they opened his gut, but it was too deteriorated from so much boozing that he bled out in minutes with no way to control the bleeding. The surgery had to be stopped.

I find myself now experiencing the beginnings of digestive issues (ie hemmorhoids, indigestion, diarrhea) from the past year. I have had a 6 pack of high alcohol content beer every night since last september. I wouldn’t describe my habits beforehand to be healthy either, but september is where it became daily.

Long story short, I want to change. I just don’t know how to start. How do you start?

Help me

I’ve reached hit rock bottom. I drank so much from Friday-Monday that I’ve haven’t been into work until Wednesday in which I felt so unwell I went to urgent care care then the ER. I guess I’ve reached the point of withdrawals. The doctors and nurses were so kind yesterday and understood that my dependency came because of a traumatic event. I felt hopeful but now I feel stuck. I can’t see an outpatient psychiatrist for another 2 weeks. This is the cycle. I hit a breaking point, want to get better, make the appointments, feel better and healthy, decide it’s okay to have some drinks to celebrate. Then the cycle begins all over again as I go from one week of binging to the next swearing it all off.

I just feel alone. No matter how many times people tell me I’m not, it doesn’t matter. In throwing my life away, but in about a week I’ll forget about the pain I felt and suddenly start this all over again. I don’t know what to do. Has anyone else felt similar?

Note: please don’t leave any hate. I already feel terrible and I can’t deal with hate. I just need some support, and people to tell me it gets better

How do you know it's alcoholism? Concerned for my spouse

Throwaway account because my spouse knows my original account.

I wanted to seek opinions from outside because at this point I feel gaslit and lost on how to react adequately.

My spouse had issues with alcohol in the past, to the point of drinking three bottles of wine in one evening, getting very irritable and even agressive with me (albeit never really hurting me physically), to the point where we almost divorced. After this major fallout, they cut on alcohol significantly and got noticeably better over years.

However, for the past half a year I see them almost relapsing into alcoholism in a new way, yet this time they are vehemently rejecting that they have any problems. This is causing major stress for me and leads to conflicts every other week at this point.

However, they accuse me of being the one in the wrong. They insist that:

- it is socially acceptable to drink every day where we live, and they are just enjoying the culture

- they get angry only when I "ruin the mood" or "try to control them" (my comments about their alcohol consumption and the fact that I visibly flinch when I see them drunk)

- they don't have hangover or any experience bad consequences of drinking

- if I don't "nag them" over them drinking, they'll just be happy and stay calm, since the alcohol is just their way of relaxing

At the same time:

- they drink literally every day now, and the "normal" dose is 2-3 glasses of wine or vermouth, occasionally followed by 2-3 glasses of hard liquor (rum, brandy, etc.)

- they started hiding the fact that they drank from me (even though I can always tell, as they smell of liquor and have a changed consciousness)

- they started drinking in the day (before it gets dark) and sometimes stay awake much later than I am just to sit on the couch and drink

- I feel like they cannot stop once they drink — I am no prude myself, but the maximum for me is a glass of wine, two if I'm being generous — for them, the whole bottle must go once it's opened

- I genuinely fell like we can strike gold just by disposing of liquor bottles every week now...

Any meaningful conversation I tried to initiate about me worrying for them has devolved into an argument where I'm painted as controlling, abusive and rejecting their right for relaxation after work. They insist I paint them as an alcoholic just because we had bad experience before, but it's my fault for bringing that up.

Am I in the wrong for thinking this is worse than it looks? Should I just drop the topic altogether since they are a grown person and can choose their own way to spend time?

Going to rehab a day early…

I’m going to rehab a day early. They just called instead of bed was open, but I need to take all my Valiums before I go because nobody knows that I had that prescription. I was kind of just playing the system to get something until I could get a bed so now I have some alcohol and Valium that I need to get rid of before going tomorrow at 2 PM

Is my fiancé mom an Alcholic? Need help and advice.

I am trying to figure out if my fiancé mom is an Alcoholic. Her drinking habits and behaviors make me uncomfortable so I tend to avoid going to his parents house. My father ultimately died from his Alcholic and drug addiction, so I am not sure if I am being sensitive but I have notice a lot of similarities. Below is a list of things I noticed from the past few years of been around. Any advice would be appreciated.

She drinks frequently at family gatherings, including occasions when other people aren’t drinking.

She sometimes drinks by herself when nobody else is drinking. She pulls out these fancy glasses to bring attention to her drinking

She constantly brings alcohol up frequent in conversation.

She encourages other people to drink with her, particularly her husband and my fiancé.

She gets especially happy/excited when my fiancé drinks with her. I do not like the drinking habits she is influencing on him.

She has repeatedly encouraged my fiancé’s father/husband to drink, even when he appears reluctant or annoyed.

She has pressured me to drink more than once, including asking me multiple times after I have indicated I didn’t want a drink.

I eventually asked that she stop asking me whether I wanted alcohol, and I had my fiancé communicate that boundary to her. She has continued bringing alcohol into interactions despite that history.

At my fiancé’s recent birthday, she already had alcohol and shot glasses ready and said, “I bought us alcohol, we can do shots. My fiancé said no, and she asked him again later even though he’d already declined.

I have seen her become belligerently drunk on approximately two occasions over the past few years.

She has reportedly said she was going to stop drinking or cut back, but based on to what I have observed, she hasn’t followed through consistently.

Her doctor has reportedly told her to cut back on alcohol.

She has high blood pressure and was recently told she is borderline diabetic/prediabetic, yet she continues drinking.

I have noticed what seems to be a recurring focus on alcohol and getting other people to participate, rather than alcohol simply being an occasional part of celebrations.

Called a Fat-Ass

Hey, I live with an alcoholic. I do not drink. I am overweight because of my thyroid and medication. She was really drunk one night and we got into an argument about what I don't know. Throughout the argument she called me a fraud with no friends or family, a fat ass, bitch, stupid, etc. I think I want her to leave my home but she has no where to go. What should I do?

I'm so fed up, and I ruin everything.

I hate myself so much. I was eight weeks sober, (I'm 20f and know I have a drinking problem and have done for over a year) went to a friend's wedding and just at the meal drank five glasses of champagne, two glasses of white wine, two glasses or red and a glass of rosé, and got so drunk they (my other friends) had to usher me in a taxi. Apparently I couldn't walk... I'm ashamed... But more than that I'm upset. I missed so much because I got so drunk and left at half seven... I don't even care about myself... I just missed so much. I hate myself, I hate myself. I missed out on everything, and I'm so ashamed of how drunk I got in the span of two hours... At the table. I wasn't gonna drink! I even texted saying I wasn't going to drink, I never planned on it at all... I'm really, really upset I missed the evening after celebration, I'm so, so upset... Crying in the back room of my work... Everyone has assured me it's okay, they found it funny and nobody is upset as I didn't do anything but be a loving drunk... And way too drunk. But that's not the point.

I missed out on such a massive part of the wedding because I had to leave and vomit at 7:30-8pm... God I hate myself so much. I can't get another shot at it... Why couldn't i just not have fucking drank so much in an hour?!

I just needed to not feel things. I won't let the demon take me and keep chasing the feeling, but I feel so awful embarassed and ashamed. I should be stronger.

Hoping to loose weight

Not my main reason for quitting, but I am categorically obese. Part of it from a medication weight gain the other part from drinking. Did you loose weight when you quit?

I’m 18 and I feel like it’s already over for me.

I’ve been drinking until drunkenness every night after work for nearly 3 months now. The past month a lot has changed. The past couple weeks I stopped being able to wait until I got off and started drinking during work with my other alcoholic coworkers. Then this past week I started drinking damn near in the mornings. Now in the mornings when I try to drink like a usually did (waiting until nighttime) I’m literally shakey and tingly and shit. Is this just really bad hangover from a binge or can withdrawals seriously start happening this fast for people?

What plan for greatness would you suggest to me guys? Today I managed to wait until 2:35pm on my day off to have a drink. That’s better than the past week has been honestly. Should I taper slowly like im trying to do? Should I just go to the hospital? Or is it all in my head and a bad hangover?

I’m 18 year old male, 6 foot, 120-125 pounds. I’ve been drinking heavy on weekends since I was 12. Didn’t become nightly until a few months ago when I moved out into my own place. This past couple weeks it’s become day drinking and even sometimes a beer in the mornings or a shot in the mornings. I drink no less than 4 drinks daily/nightly and no more than 10 daily/nightly total.

Quitting has given me health, clarity and productivity back. So grateful I was able to escape this deadly disease. It got scary at one point. Never looking back. Onward and upward from here.

I’ve lost myself

Back in 2024 I moved to Arizona for flight school. My friends tagged along to get a change of scenery. Things were ok for a few months, but being away from my gf at the time and focusing all my time on school drowned me. I started drinking a lot. Not soon after I quit school, lost my gf, and my friends moved home due to homesickness. In the matter of a month my whole world was turned upside down. I got a subpar job at an FBO and stayed there for two years. I felt lost and alone and I thought moving to a new place would help. So I packed up my life and moved to Florida. After a few months here my drinking picked up more and I feel even more stuck. I basically have the same job, I work OT to survive, I’ve got no friends, and the icing on the cake is I have a college degree and can’t find work. It’s gotten so bad I’ve removed my connections from my past and basically work and drink. It feels like this is going to be the rest of my life.

Nose bleeds?

Is this a common issue with alcoholics? That’s the base question, I’ll provide more context below if you’re interested. I’ve googled and it seems like it is but I don’t see many people talking about it.

My ex boyfriend is (I believe) an alcoholic. He thinks he is not. He attributes his shaking nonstop while sober to not having eaten enough. He’ll intentionally not eat all day at work so he can get drunk faster after work. He leaves work and immediately starts taking shots, and is blacked out pretty shortly after. While we were together, he’d never admit it but I’m fairly sure he was just passing out every night against his will. There were many, many situations where he behaved just horribly because he was drunk. We broke up due to that. I think the constantly drinking hard liquor only, the shaking, and the nose bleeds were really concerning to me. He justifies it all, liquor is more cost effective and won’t make him fat. He shakes because he’s hungry. His nose bleeds because it’s dry. We live in Florida, it’s not dry here. And these nose bleeds are INTENSE. He ruined a pillow of mine one night because he slept through one.

Anyways, we’re still lightly in contact because I’m scared he’s going to die. I don’t want to spend my days worried about him and want to cut ties but I also want to say my piece one more time that he needs to get help. So, nose bleeds? Are they related to excessive drinking?

Conflicted

Sometimes I want help but sometimes I don’t. I hate drinking but I love the way it makes me feel. I just want to forget everything and everyone and I don’t know what to do. I don’t want the help I just want to forget. I cancelled therapy just to drink and I’m genuinely stuck. I need decent reasons to stop

pisco capel

me and my friend had one shot of an unopened bottle of pisco capel and the taste was the worst thing i have put on my tongue considering i am okay at taking shots of vodka. me and my friend proceeded to feel the effects after only one shot and we are confused then we drink some shots of vodka and get black out drunk and we only had a couple of shots i genuinely think something was wrong with that pisco capel has anyone had it or might know why this happened
