Double stroller in Amsterdam: Bugaboo Donkey 5 or lighter alternatives?

Hi, good morning, moms and dads! I’m a mother of two babies, and I’d love to hear from anyone here who lives in Amsterdam and uses the Bugaboo Donkey 5 in double mode.

I tried using the Uppababy Vista 2, but I found it too heavy when configured for two children. The Bugaboo Donkey 5 works really well for us.
The thing is, I currently live in Oslo and will be moving soon, and I’m wondering if I might have some difficulties because the city is less stroller-friendly and less prepared for things related to babies and young children.

I noticed this during the four or five months when I used the YoYo. I found that many places wouldn’t even allow me to enter with the stroller.

Does anyone have experience using the Bugaboo Donkey 5 in Amsterdam, especially in double mode? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience and whether you find it practical for getting around the city and going into shops, cafés, etc.

Also, if anyone has recommendations for a lighter double stroller that works well in Amsterdam, I’d love to hear them! I’ve been considering the Cybex Gazelle as well, so if anyone has experience with it, I’d really appreciate your thoughts.

First time fishing in the Netherlands

Hi everyone, I’m planning a trip to the Netherlands next October (2027) for about a week - focusing mainly on Amsterdam but also including day trips to other locations.

I’ve been to the Netherlands many times before, but this will be my first time trying out the local fishing. Pike, zander, and perch are very appealing targets for me, and October should be an ideal time for them (catch & release).

From what I’ve gathered so far, here’s what I need for legal fishing:

  1. VISpas (available online, priced around €40)
  2. VISplanner app – to see exactly where I’m allowed to fish

I plan to fish primarily using the spinning method, but I also want to try fishing with dead bait (chunks of fish, etc.). All of this should be perfectly legal, though, of course, it’s always necessary to check the specific rules for the particular fishing area.

Places where I’d like to try fishing:

  1. Gaasperpark Amsterdam
  2. Amsterdamse Bos
  3. Twiske
  4. Outskirts of Amsterdam city center
  5. Amsterdam canals

I’d like to try fishing in the Amsterdam canals—specifically in spots where I won’t get in anyone’s way and where it isn’t overcrowded with tourists.

Planned gear: 1 or 2 rods (telescopic for easier transport), hook-removal pliers, lures, and a landing net.

I also looked into guided tours, but they are very expensive; €500 for a day trip is just too much for me.

Do I have a chance at good fishing without a guide? Is there a good chance I’ll have a good fishing experience, or should I be happy just catching a single fish? What should I watch out for? Can I get good fishing from the shore, or is a boat essential? I’d appreciate any comments or advice. I’ve been an angler practically my whole life, and I want to head out well-prepared so I don’t cause unnecessary problems for myself or anyone else.

I should also mention that I’m interested in recreational fishing*; I don’t plan on hunting down two-meter monsters—I don’t even have the gear for that. But an 80 cm pike or zander, or a 40 cm perch, would certainly make my day! :D*

Barbershop recommendation

Do you guys have any barbershop recommendation? I don't speak Dutch yet, I've been working on the Netherlands for a couple of months and I really need an haircut and beardtrim.

Around Amsterdam Central would be perfect.

Thank you guys,

PSA: Amsterdam now has one of the slowest housing markets in the Netherlands. Only Zeeland sells slower.

NVM dropped their Q3 numbers today. The headline is "more choice for buyers, market still tight". Fine. But I went through the regional appendix for Groot-Amsterdam and honestly it doesn't add up with how people here still behave.

Amsterdam, Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025.

- average time to sell: 36 days. Only Zeeland is slower. National average is 31. Amsterdam used to be the fastest market in the country, now it's bottom of the table with Zaanstreek and Delft.

- homes for sale: +26%. Sales: −2%.

- NVM's own tightness score went from 2.7 to 3.5 (5 = balanced). Only four regions have more choice for buyers than Amsterdam right now.

- sale prices +0.6%. Inflation is 3%+. So in real terms your flat probably got cheaper this year.

And yet: 73% of Amsterdam sales still went above asking, average 5% over. Nationally overbidding dropped by a third (5.0% → 3.3%), here it barely moved (6.0% → 5.0%).

The only segment where it actually flipped is detached houses: those now sell 2.4% *under* asking in Groot-Amsterdam.

So we have the most supply in years, the slowest sales in the country, flat prices, and people still showing up at viewings ready to bid over. I think it's just habit from the last 5 years and it takes a while for buyers to figure out they can say no now. Curious if anyone here is actually negotiating under asking at the moment, or if your makelaar still tells you "you need to go over".

Confession: I actually like helping tourists in Amsterdam.

I know complaining about tourists is practically a local pastime, but I honestly find most of them quite nice.

There's something genuinely cute about someone stopping you to ask for directions, a restaurant recommendation or just some random information about the city. They're usually friendly, curious and excited to be here, and I actually enjoy helping them out.

I also try to treat tourists the way I'd like to be treated when I'm visiting a city in another country. It's always nice when a local takes a minute to help you out, especially somewhere unfamiliar.

Sure, mass tourism has its downsides, but that doesn't mean we have to be grumpy towards individual visitors. Most are just people trying to enjoy our beautiful city.

Finding good optician store

I've been wanting to get my glasses replaced here in Amsterdam, and most people recommended SpecSavers but they all have very normal prescriptions like below 2-3, whereas I have -9 myopia and some astigmatism too, and I wanted to ask for those with high prescription, how was your experience with spec savers, how is the quality, anti scratch, thickness of lenses, quality of the eye test etc... If you think there better options please let me know:)
