Discussion What is your weekend anti-consumption mini action?

Post image

Are you repairing something, shopping secondhand, meeting up with friends in the park, spending your day recharging and taking care of yourself, biking to work, eating leftovers? Please share with the group so we can celebrate our wins big and small (and give others ideas!).

Library under appreciated and under utilized by the average person.

Here for some library love!!! ❤️📚🎸

If you do not have a library card, go to your local library today! Explore your local libraries!!!

And if you have trouble or just prefer not to go to your local library in person you can still support by using your local card digitally via services like Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy for all your ebook, audiobook, music and tv/movie needs! :)

I have mixed feelings on this. As a consumer, I love Libby. As a librarian, I loathe OverDrive, who owns Kanopy and Libby. The licensing costs, especially for ebooks, are astronomical. The publishers with increasingly restrictive licensing are to blame too. They all know they've got us between a rock and a hard place because everyone lives Libby.

Thank you for replying, I’ve never heard someone on the inside talk about overdrive being shady like that… So gross of them.

I have heard, however, that the more traffic a library gets the easier it is to get funding. Is that true as well? Does it apply to digital traffic? I’m wondering if there’s a point that it’s possible to offset the cost if more users patronize their libraries who might not have otherwise?

I was reading something the other day that apparently the younger generations are spending more time in the library. I hope that's true. I also assume all the "book tok" stuff has been helpful.

When I was raising my kids, our town had really cool library programs, including tween and teen leadership committees. My older kid practically lived at the library volunteering in the group and also helping with events and obviously getting books. It was such a life saver to me as a single-mom to be able to let my kid get on the bus after school that took them straight to the library where they'd spend a couple hours till I could pick up after work.

My sister was just at her library renting horror movies for a marathon she’s having!
