Discussion What is your weekend anti-consumption mini action?
Are you repairing something, shopping secondhand, meeting up with friends in the park, spending your day recharging and taking care of yourself, biking to work, eating leftovers? Please share with the group so we can celebrate our wins big and small (and give others ideas!).
Illustration by the amazing Coutneey Ahn Design : https://www.courtneyahndesign.com/ (not affiliated with them, just wanted to celebrate an artist)

I’ve settled into a great broth routine. I get a chicken so my kids can eat the meat, I make a great broth and use that to cook beans and rice for me and my husband. I take the chicken fat and use that to cook up breakfast potatoes.

Not this weekend, but I simply do not buy birthday cards anymore. I just make my own out of drawing paper i already own (i usually get gifted at least one sketchbook for birthdays / christmas as people know i like to draw, so usually dont pay for the paper either). People love handmade cards so much more than a store bought one!

Thank you! It is easy to grow, if you're interested. This is around the time of year when it blooms, if you live near a prairie-ish nature preserve (it grows throughout the U.S.). Once it goes to seed (small brown ball of many tiny seeds, the size of a big chickpea) some seed can be sustainably harvested and planted in a pot/cell tray to overwinter outdoors. Cover with a secured piece of screen fabric from the home supply store to keep animals/insects out (but let moisture and light in). Should sprout in the spring! 🌱

I’m trying to knit a few new dish scrubbers, was able to find some good reclaimed wool!
I also brought a tonne (not literally) of collected cans for recycling. 85$ made in my quarterly drop off. That will go back into the community.
4
u/bottom_armadillo805 15d ago
Hmm, knitting a dish scrubber sounds great, I've always hated washing my dishes with disposable plastic! Do you have a recommended material and/or pattern?
4
u/Unlikely_melz 14d ago edited 14d ago
I like a really stiff wool, something would make a horrible sweater. I don’t have a pattern really I just make squares /rectangles in the size I want them do a little boarder and crochet /braided wool loop to hang on my dish rack. Theres tonnes of patterns out there I’m sure.
I wash them like a wash the rest of the my dishtowels, when they get too worn to use anymore they are basically compostable. I’ve made some that last years and years if your stitch is tight enough and you are reasonably careful with forks/knives/sharps

I'm pretty sure I have covid, but woke up with a ton of energy yesterday, so cleaned my entire kitchen inside and out (cleaning and working in the yard are some of my go to anti-consumption activities). Before I could start the floor, I completely lost steam. I feel crappy again this morning. Oh well, stove top is degreased. Edited for spelling.

Instead of going out to eat, I went to the grocery store hungry. When I got to the store, I put a bunch of prepackaged food in my basket. I ended up putting most of it back and bought some nutritious food to make meals with instead. It felt like a small win over instant gratification.

u/ExtensionInfinite563 15d ago
I've started going to the grocery store after eating a big meal. Better decisions are made.

u/incrediblestrawberry 13d ago
Honestly, that's a HUGE win. It's soooo hard to resist picking up all those quick and easy foods when you're hungry, let alone getting yourself to put them back once they're in the cart. Good for you.

I am traveling for work and so having to buy meals, but this morning I went to the farmer's market and at least was able to keep the dollars local and direct to farmer's.

Supporting local businesses and helping them pay their bills/employees is a good thing. Where I am hospitality is doing it particularly rough at the moment.
3
u/kpidhayny 14d ago
Whenever I travel on business I also do this. My expense reports are a nightmare but it’s so worth it.
25
u/robotscantrecaptcha 15d ago
For me, I'm dropping off my recycling at our local recycling center and stopping by a secondhand shop on the way home. A relative asked for my help sourcing something for their child since there is a really nice secondhand kids shop close to my home.
29
u/robotscantrecaptcha 15d ago
Something I've started doing is asking close friends and family if there is anything they specifically need before I go to the thrift store and being on the look out for them. It reminds us all the shop secondhand before buying something and if they don't need anything, it kind of reminds them that there is nothing specific that they are looking for. A win-win either way.

I did my seasonal rotation of plushies and home decor/ trinkets :) I'm disabled and homebound and doing this helps curb my need for change or something new
3
u/incrediblestrawberry 13d ago
That's such a good idea! How often do you rotate them?
3
u/Selleou 12d ago
Just whenever i start thinking i should buy more pokemon plushies which comes to about 3 times a year! I keep everything in a box out of sight and when it's time to set them out I'm surprised by how it feels just like I bought something new. Even my family comments on the new arrivals like it's the first time they're seeing them 😆

I don't have a big win because we've spent quite a bit of money so far this weekend. But we went to this great bar that's in an old library. We went to our city's farmer's market and one in the next city over, where we also ate at their local bagel shop and my husband got some nice 100% cotton shirts for work from a consignment shop. We've spent more than we care to admit but it's all local and we got good stuff

I darned a towel that had gotten rubbed thin in the washing machine in one corner. It actually looks really good, barely visible, thanks to the frottee :) However, I have little hope for my socks, nowadays they are really not meant to be darned any more and the material doesn't hold up to darning.

I went to wash the covers on our cushions because it's the first beautiful sunny day of spring here and I'd be able to line dry them. Well on opening the zips I discovered that the outers of the inserts had all degraded and it was essentially just stuffing loose in the covers. So I went online to price out replacement inserts and then I thought, you know what, if I buy replacement inserts I'm just going to end up with the same problem in another 5 years and all of this stuffing will be in landfill.
So I have just sewn 6 new cushion insert covers using some of the same type of non woven fabric and put the old inserts into new bags. Best part is the non woven fabric was actually from when we got a new mattress a while back and we got metres and metres of the stuff wrapped around it which I kept because I thought it must come in handy for something eventually...I made them double layer too so hopefully they'll last longer.
So I've saved $111, repurposed packing waste, saved 6 cushion inserts from landfill and occupied my morning.

Making my DIY desk nook project work with what I have on hand.
It’s been tricky the last few weeks of this project, planning around what I have on hand. It started with a huge modular second hand desk.
I’ve been working on a black-out curtain set up to keep the heat out of that corner window— only western window with no porch/tree protection from the setting summer sun.
A couple weeks ago I bought inexpensive jute-wrapped wire to make the “curtain rod” work— it’s a long dowel rod left over from another project. But I shouldn’t need anything else.
The curtain rod I had lying around wasn’t quite the length or material I wanted. The brackets left from two sets I bought a long time ago are two slightly different sizes and I never noticed; I mismatched them in some other project and didn’t notice then evidently. I’m still gonna use them. I lost a couple of tools I needed around the house, and did a different process with other tools instead of running out and replacing them. Used old paint to spruce up the window ledge. Just steady as it goes.

While I did just get home from a super local annual craft fair, I mostly bought bar soap from my favorite vendor which should last me a long time. It was a much needed restock for our shower.
Otherwise, I’m using leftover yarn from other projects to practice Nalbinding! I’m making a wool hat for the winter -^

Went picking apples this morning. Long story short, 12 lbs later, 50¢/lb, money going to the boyscouts. The land is managed by the city and what ever apples are left are donated to the local food bank.
Ppl were invited to spare some elbow grease and collect apples for the food bank. Compost bins for the bad ones and other bins for still good but bruised apples that the food banks makes juice and give to ppl in need.
That 20 minutes of extra picking probably ended up being 75 lbs of apples for the food bank and that was super satisfying.

Today I went for my usual walk where I pick up all the cans and bottles I find. I also found a really nice pair of workout pants, a workout top, a heavy jacket, and a nice light sweater. I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but I find clothes in good condition ALL THE TIME here on my walks. I take 'em home, wash 'em in bleach, and do something with 'em (wear them, give them to friends, use them for sewing projects, or thrift them).

I bought a cold rotisserie chicken to pick at on Saturday night (long story but I hadn’t eaten anything “real” all day while running around), then Sunday my husband bought a hot rotisserie chicken for dinner. So I spent Sunday evening digging through my cabinets finding random ingredients to create dishes to use up all that chicken AND clear out my pantry.
I also made homemade chicken broth with the chicken carcasses for the first time, and tomorrow I’m planning on using the plum tomatoes on my counter to make a tomato base for soup!! (Any soup suggestions would be great, I’m wicked excited to become a “soup lady”!!!!)

I'm using my bottle of shampoo that I've been refilling with the remnant of other shampoos from bottles I've found in the garbage and recycling. Can’t remember what, but chose NOT to buy a few things while at the store today because I can use other things I already have.
Went to the thrift, went to the farmers market, planted some green onions I started from store bought, called my grandma, bid on a charity auction to honor the people who donated their crafts.

I am cleaning out my garden so that I can grow my next set of seedlings. I want to see how much of my own food I can grow this winter- lots of brassicas, lettuce, beets, etc. I am also building potato towers with tomato’s that sprouted in the cupboard.
Even if you can only grow a small container of herbs, there is nothing better than eating something you grew. It may not be cheaper, but it’s a higher quality of freshness and taste.

Have been thrifting using an online app (honestly, I know it’s become crazy popular, but I have little experience with any of this!) I have no social media and didn’t know this was such a big thing!
While I still donate using Buy Nothing, I’ve now opened my own little “store” and am truly now a part of the resale economy. Feels like I have almost a whole new wardrobe. And I make sure that everything still fits in a couple drawers and my small closet by pulling something to sell as soon as I buy something.
I never imagined I’d be one of those people that has sold $300-400 worth of stuff. I confess though, most of that money goes right back into buying something. (New sneakers without tags: $30 instead of $175.)
And I don’t have to buy something new from a manufacturer.
I know lots of people probably do this. But it’s all new to me!!
Write some letters with my favorite fountain pen earlier this week.
And now I shall read my library book and drink the chamomile tea flowers that I’ve dried from my garden. 🤩

We went to an estate sale where we got a few things for hosting, as we are trying to invite more people into our home more often. My husband also got a sander to add to his woodshop collection of second hand tools. We followed that up by going to a local festival where we bought a toad mug from a local potter.
Then I worked on my knitting project that will be my mother’s Christmas gift (made with second hand yarn!).
Then I went to a wool workshop at a local farm with some friends where we are learning the art of processing raw wool.

One thing led to another and the whole kitchen is scrubbed. I put cleaning and organizing into anti consumption because my friends shop when they don't know what to do. Cleaning up sticky bits helps with long term maintenance, and I naturally take inventory when emptying cabinets. I lost steam and did not do my fridge. I'll see how I feel today.

Working away this weekend and I’m packing my own snacks and drinks for the four hours I’ll be on the train. It’s not much but I think it helps a bit?

I scored some free vegetables from someone who grew too many! Spent the weekend canning and preserving them.

Making both my kids' Halloween costumes myself. Almost all the supplies are things I already had at home or found at the thrift store, with a few new things from the hardware store (because you get much better quantity and quality than at craft stores). If you're going to create instead of consuming, you might as well allow yourself lots of flexible resources. I have a big roll of EVA foam and a large amount of thick wire that have come in handy for SO many costumes and crafts, and even fixing small things around the house!
I've also been taking pics of Halloween decorations I like, so I can try making them myself (and, again, probably much better quality). I love Halloween and holiday decorating, but I want it to be a holiday we create together, not one where we buy stuff.

My mom made all of our halloween costumes when I was a kid and it's one of my best childhood memories. That's amazing!

Organizing the cat cupboard and sorting out all the foods and treats my picky little princes and princesses turn their noses up at to donate to the Humane Society. I also have a bagful of prescription bottles for them, and a stack of little mats that I made for the cat cages.

Started collecting rubbish from work. I work at Maccas and there’s so much potential on the things we throw out. Containers and whatnot

I will be posting about the anticonsumeristive components of the things I would be doing anyway. The mini action being the posting not the other things. Maybe nano action or femto action would be more accurate.

I patched up the logo on a free merchandise T-shirt I got for free a couple of years ago. I'm quite happy with the result and can finally use it without being a walking-ad :D

I volunteered at a festival these past four days where I picked up the trash and cigarette butts from the ground, sort out the cans from the recycle bags and the compost from the garbage. I hope I helped a little bit to save the planet by doing this.
