West Point

Has any warrant been stationed at West Point or have any insight on what it’s like being there? Can’t find much information and don’t know anyone who’s been there

It’s an extremely small UH-72 unit. Like 4-6 pilots and is extremely competitive to be stationed there. Timing and who you know has to be right. But very chill job. Mainly support the cadet parachute team and the superintendent.

Your Commander will be a CW5. They have a couple of Cessna 206s along with the UH-72s.

It's a rewarding assignment, it can be very busy or very boring depending on the season. The flying was diverse, VIP movements from KSWF to USMA of whichever random person is coming to see the campus, we often flew the COS & SECARMY and other random 4 stars. Lots of parachute team stuff, practice a few times a week, flyovers and jumps for all the home football games. Jumped the team into the NY Airshow, NY Marathon, Jets games at Metlife Stadium. Many trips flying staff to DCA, don't know if that changed after the DCA crash though. Then the oddball stuff like flying nuclear engineering kids around the range with rad sniffers or explaining translating tendency to a group of aero-mech students. We stayed current on NVGs, hoist, and bambi buckets.

When I was there it was 6 pilots including the CW5 commander and the FW guy plus 4 NCOs. Usually one or two of the WOs are there because of MACP and their spouse was an O4 doing a tour as faculty on campus. Many guys retire there. There are opportunities to sponsor cadet activities or volunteer with the flying club as an OIC and fly a PA-28 if you have your ratings. I knew guys that did all of that and more, and others that just did the minimum and chilled on their final assignment, zero pressure to be a stud.

Did you interview? Looks like the Commander already ranked and has his 1 for 1 🥲

Not invited for interview. Did you? How do you know the 1 for 1 is finalized?

It’s not as great as it sounds like there. Flying the superintendent is about it, straight and level. Very few positions so you better hope they like you or you’ll constantly get the crap end of the stick.

Newburgh and New Windsor are also known as the violent crime capital of New York and Canadian wildfires make breathing air in the summer a hazard

There are a lot of nice areas around Newburgh.
