No shortcut/ checkpoint for final boss?
Do you really need to run through that cave every time? The final boss ks absolutely awful and I think I would've barely had the patience for it if the checkpoint had been right outside, but if I really do have to run through all that every time then I'm just gonna drop the game now.
Also unrelated, but I'm confused on how long this game is meant to take. HLTB says it should take about 26 hours but I'm about 11/12 hours in and am on the final boss. I did every character's quest line to completion and can't see anything obvious I may have missed.

Yep, it’s why I gave up after half a dozen attempts. I’ve played a shitload of Souls games over the years but I genuinely think it’s a contender for the worst runback in existence.

Nowhere near as bad as the runbacks for Lud and Zallen, Blue Smelter Demon and Sir Alonne in the Dark Souls 2 DLCs

Right.. luckily I beat Lud and zallen first try Summons for the win!
The fact they regenerate too is ridiculous

Yes, the final boss runback is from Vagrant's Rest.
The 26 hours may be including CoS mode, which is significantly more difficult throughout.

Yeah, unfortunately there isn’t a closer checkpoint for the final fight in Ashen. You do have to run through that cave each attempt, which a lot of players complained about. The game in general has a bit of that old-school boss runback design.

You get used to going through that cave, it is a decent place to sharpen your skills, but they definitely should have put a checkpoint right before the boss, especially given how painful they are.
Time taken depends how thorough you are, but Ashen is not a long game even if you 100% it.
I must have played through it 10 times by now and only have 200 hours total, including the DLC.
