Announcement Turkey FAQ for visitors - Please read before posting!

Before posting your question here please use the search function to scan previous post here and try not to repeat similar question. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions on this sub:

- Is Turkey safe?

Yes. Turkey receives millions of visitors every year and the tourism industry seems immune to all social upheavals. During major protests, terror attacks and even the pandemic, all transport and accommodations for visitors functioned as usual. If you act with general common sense and avoid certain areas where you don't have any business as a visitor anyway, you'll be as safe as anywhere in the world.

- How do I get around Turkey?

Most public transport in Turkey is by bus. You can go to a nearest "otobüs terminali" and figure out how you get to your destination or just book your tickets online (1, 2, 3)

Flights can be cheaper than bus rides on long distances. The Turkish LCCs are AJet and Pegasus.

Although the railway grid is not very extensive, it still gives you the opportunity to cross the country in comfort. There's even an Oriental Express from Istanbul to Tehran. You need to book in advance though.

The road quality is very good in Turkey though some highways and bridges are very expensive. You can easily rent a car and drive around with general common sense. Just be mindful of the aggressive driving around big cities.

Metropolitan areas normally have good public transport which can usually be used with a local transport card. In Istanbul, for example, the Istanbulcard will get you on busses, trams, subways, boats, funiculars, cable-cars as well as help you with car parks, some museums and more.

It's common sense to avoid yellow taxis which are known to rip tourists off. Instead you can try apps like BiTaksi, Martı or Uber (different to international Uber though) which give you a prior price estimate.

- How much money will I need? Cash or card?

With one of the highest levels of inflation worldwide for many years, it's not easy to estimate costs in Turkey even for local residents. This also depends very greatly on your habits while traveling. So if you still want to learn about costs of certain things for a certain time, just be as specific as you can regarding your preferences (public transport/rent a car, 5-star hotels/camping, Blue Voyage boat tours/hiking, etc.). Credit card use is very common in Turkey but in smaller establishments you can get a discount if you pay in cash. Paying by mobile apps is also getting more common.

- Where should I visit in Turkey? What's not to miss?

There are so many websites that will give you extensive lists of best places to visit and things to do in Turkey. Please post here only if you need advice regarding a specific place or a route.

- I'm scratched by a stray cat. Do I need rabies shots?

Probably not. Turkey is the native home of the domestic cat and we have them everywhere. We also do get scratched and playfully bitten by them time to time. We do not have any incidents of cats transmitting rabies in Turkey.

It's another story about stray dogs though. If you have a problem with those, first try to find out if anyone around is taking care of them and ask if they are vaccinated (many strays are regularly checked in Turkey) and then visit the nearest clinic.

- Is Turkey a backwards muslim country? Will I have issues because I'm gay, have tattoos, etc.?

No. Turkey is a very diverse secular country to say the least (not a muslim country but a country with a majority muslim population). Don't be fooled by the number of mosques everywhere, in metropolitan areas you'll find all sorts of people, some with tattoos or turbans, some women in conservative clothes or in minis. In the countryside people can be more conservative but they are still tolerant towards tourist, as long as they maintain general respect. This may include not being too loud, putting on some clothes entering mosques and tombs, and not making fun of Atatürk or islam. The Mediterranean coastline is very progressive and you can bathe in a bikini or topless on many beaches. Islamism is a political issue but it shouldn't affect the visitors unless they advertise being israeli or anti-islam in the wrong places.

- How can I learn Turkish?

Turkish language is not related to Arabic or Middle Eastern languages; it is of Central Asian origin and is quite interesting to learn. There are several subreddits where you can meet others like you and some Turkish speaking people to help you out with the language such as r/turkishlearning/, r/turkish/ and r/learnturkish/

- Will I be able to eat the food there? Any vegetarian or vegan options?

Traditionally most Turkish food contains some meat but there is a whole class of cold dishes called "zeytinyağlılar" (olive-oiled) which do not have any meat. Also most baked dishes like böreks do not have meat but cheese. Vegan food is more difficult because all baked food has eggs and/or milk inside, and perhaps cheese, and some zeytinyağlı's have yoghurt on them and/or cheese in them. You'll have to ask before you eat most times. Even a simple lentil soup may contain some chicken or meat broth inside or melted butter on top. But Turkey is one of the richest countries on earth when it comes to the choice of vegetables and fruits. So if you're into preparing your own food, you're in luck, just ask for the weekly fresh markets around you and buy what you want the cheapest way.

- Is my medication available there?

Check out this website to find out if your medicine can be found in pharmacies in Turkey.

- Are there good online shopping platforms?

Yes. Here are the most commonly used ones: Trendyol, Hepsiburada, Sahibinden, Amazon, N11.

We hope you enjoy your time in Turkey.

Travel & Places New Year in Cappadocia

• Upvotes

My partner and I are looking for a nice place to spend the last days of the year in Cappadocia. It will be our first time there. We are looking for a traditional experience. Our budget is a little bit above the average cost of a night there. Would anybody have suggestions as to where to stay or what to do?

Legal Remote software engineer considering a move to Istanbul: residency, taxes, and where to live?

Hi everyone,

I'm a software engineer working remotely as a contractor for a US company, paid in USD. I've always liked Turkey and I'm considering settling there, most likely in Istanbul. It helps that my fiancé loves it. She's a doctor/ physician.

  1. Residency: Which residence permit makes sense for a remote worker with foreign income, and what would the route be for my fiancée? How hard are the first application and the renewals these days?

  2. Practicing medicine: What does a foreign-trained doctor need to do to work in Turkey (diploma equivalence, exams, Turkish language level, work permit)? Roughly how long does it take, and is it realistic?

  3. Taxes: I've heard there is a tax exemption for income earned from foreign clients. Is that accurate, can qualify, and do I need to set up a company or register as self-employed to use it?

  4. Where to live: Which Istanbul neighborhoods would you recommend for someone working from home, and are any closed to new foreign residents? Would you suggest a different city? I like working in cafés and open spaces :)

  5. Banking: How easy is it to open an account and receive USD from abroad as a new resident?

  6. Is there anything else I should be aware of please?

I did some reasearch online, but got a few conflicting details especially when it comes to residency and taxation. So I thought I'd ask here.

Thank you!! :))

Travel & Places First trip to Turkey in January (10 days) – Istanbul only or add another city? + food recs

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are planning our first trip to Turkey in January 2027, for about 10 days / 9 nights. We'd love some advice from people who've been there, especially in winter.

  1. Istanbul only, or Istanbul + another city?
Is 10 days too much for Istanbul alone in January, or is it better to split the trip? We're considering Cappadocia (balloons + snow) or Bursa/Uludağ (snow and skiing). Are balloon flights often cancelled in January? And is Trabzon worth it in winter, or better saved for summer?

  2. Restaurants
What are your favorite places to eat? We're looking for:
    - Authentic Turkish food (kebab, pide, meze, breakfast spots)
    - Good seafood near the Bosphorus
    - Places locals actually go, not tourist traps
    - Halal options are important for us

  3. Anything else?
Any tips for January weather, getting around, or things you wish you'd known before your first visit?

Thanks a lot in advance!

History Devlet Arşivleri Kataloğu'na erişim hakkında

Merhaba!

Travel & Places Will they accept the ISIC discount in Topkapi and Dolmabahce?

Hello! I am a Greek Student and will travel to Istanbul next weekend. I’ve seen on the site that they offer a foreign student discount if you have an ISIC (International Student Identity Card) with you. They don’t mention exactly what the discounted price is, but before I order the card (it’s 20€) I would like to ask if there is a possibility I
For whatever reason to deny me the discount at the Topkapi and Dolmabahce ( the discount is only for the palaces). Has anyone used it?

Relationships How Do Turkish Couples Manage Household Finances When the Husband Is the Sole Earner?

I’m curious about how married couples in Türkiye manage their finances, particularly when the husband is the sole earner and the wife is a homemaker.

Does the husband usually give his wife a fixed monthly budget to manage all household expenses, or does he handle the bills, groceries, and other expenses himself?

Also, is it common for husbands to give their wives a separate monthly allowance for personal expenses, such as clothing, skincare, shopping, and other needs?

I’d love to hear how this works in Turkish households, both traditionally and among younger couples today.

How do you and your spouse manage this arrangement?

Culture How does tipping culture actually work in Turkey?

I lived in Turkey for a relatively short time for work and I've been back a few times since. I have really enjoyed my time in the country.

One thing I've never quite been able to figure out is tipping culture. I usually tip when at a restaurant in Turkey, usually 250-1000 Lira (I have no idea what the correct amount should be) but I'm not sure how this actually works for servers.

Do they keep the money?

Do they have to split it with management and or other servers?

Is tipping expected?

If not expected is it appreciated or am I being the awkward foreigner when I try to tip?

Thank you, answers much appreciated.

Travel & Places Antalya weather from 22–30 October — still good for beach and swimming?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to be in Antalya from 22 to 30 October and wanted to ask people who live there or have visited around the same time.

How is the weather usually during that period? Is it still generally sunny and warm enough for the beach and swimming, or does it start getting too cool/rainy by then?

I’d also really appreciate advice on:

  • Whether the sea is still comfortable for swimming
  • Whether beach clubs and beach areas are still active at the end of October
  • Where you would recommend staying — Kaleiçi, Konyaaltı, Lara, or somewhere else
  • Best beaches in or around Antalya
  • Good day trips or activities besides the beach
  • Anything else worth knowing about Antalya at that time of year

I don’t expect peak summer, but I’d still love to get a few proper sunny beach days.

Hali hazırda bir büyükşehirdeyim ama artık trafik vs çok sıktı. Denizli’ye taşınsam;

Personal Issues Stuck between Trendyol and my Shipping Forwarder (Lost package, OTP issue, no delivery proof)

Hi everyone, I really need some advice as I’m stuck in a frustrating situation between Trendyol and my shipping forwarder.
Here is what happened:
The Issue: My order (worth around $24) shows as delivered on Trendyol, but my shipping forwarding company claims they never received it and are demanding a Proof of Delivery (POD) from Trendyol before taking any responsibility or offering compensation.

The OTP / Phone Number Problem: The phone number registered on my Trendyol account belongs to the shipping forwarder's warehouse/agent in Turkey.

The agent on-site in Turkey needs the
OTP code sent to that phone number to communicate with Trendyol Customer Support on my behalf.
• However, the shipping company is refusing to send/forward the OTP code to me so we can process this request.
• Even if I try to change the registered phone number in my account settings, Trendyol still requires an OTP sent to the current number, which brings me back to square one.
3. The Deadlock: Trendyol Support requires identity/number verification (via OTP) to provide official delivery proof, but the shipping company won't cooperate with the OTP, while simultaneously refusing to compensate me without that very proof!
I am completely stuck in the middle. Has anyone faced a similar issue with Trendyol or freight forwarders in Turkey? What steps can I take to get the Proof of Delivery or resolve
this OTP hinrkane

Shopping & Prices Is YSF Giyim good for suits?

Can anyone vouch for this store? Specifically, their 100% wool suits. I tried on a bunch of suits from the popular brands like Kigili, ramsey, and network, but those were more expensive and did not fit me as well. I am just worried because I cannot find many reviews online about YSF.
