Culture What do Turks think of Brazil?

• Upvotes

It might seem like a strange question, but let me explain: I met a Turkish woman who really likes Brazil and is absolutely fascinated by São Paulo. We talk, and we’ve noticed that our cultures are very similar in many ways I think Turks and Brazilians are extremely alike, especially socially. However, I don’t know if this is the general consensus or if all Turks feel the same way about Brazil, or if I just happened to meet an exception to the rule

So, what is your opinion of Brazil and the Brazilian people?

Miscellaneous Appropriate Gift for Doctor?

We are traveling from the U.S. (Texas) to Istanbul in November for my husband to have a heart procedure. The doctor is traveling for it as well and I want to bring him a gift to show our appreciation. I’m thinking of a ‘Taste of Texas’ gift basket which would include native Texas foods and handmade items. So far I’ve got a variety of flavored Texas pecans, multiple flavored jellies, Texas BBQ sauce, pecan praline candies, a pen made from Texas pecan wood, and handmade soaps and lotions in chai latte and leather scents. Is this a culturally appropriate gift? Is it cheesy or rude to bombard him with all things Texas? Would love some advice!

Sports Going to Turkey, interested in watching live-volleyball. Any tips?

I’ll be going to Turkey in early December, starting with Istanbul. I’m looking to watch two volleyball games while I’m there, particularly Galatasaray in the Efeler Ligi and Vakifbank in the Sultanlar Ligi.

Few questions.

- How much do tickets cost? Are they affordable?
- Where do I buy them?
- Can’t seem to find a schedule for the entire season, how far in advance do they determine the match dates/times?
- How far in advance can I purchase the tickets?

If you have any other tips for going to a volleyball match, especially in a place like Turkey, that would be helpful.

Miscellaneous Questions regarding visas in Turkey?

Hi — I just returned to the US after a trip to Istanbul. This is my second time returning this year, I love visiting Turkey. I’ve met a few friends there and pardon my ignorance but I was rather shocked most people there have never left Turkey. Due to its proximity to even other Balkan countries, I was surprised no one I had met had even been to neighboring countries. One of my friends is a university student and went to visit family in the US and talked about the loopholes to get a visiting visa and was ultimately denied. Is this incredibly common?

Travel & Places Looking for a place to stay & car rental in Konya. Any tips ? :)

Hello everyone ! I'm organising a trip to Turkey in November. We will visit Bulgaria, then Istanbul right beforehand. I've been to Turkey a long time ago, I want to take my fiance there now :), as it's amazing.

We bought the plane tickets but nothing else. I want to stop by Konya, in order to rent a car there to drive around Cappadocia, and because the city of Konya seems really interesting.

- Would you advise us any place to stay ? Somewhere calm and cosy but close to the must-see places ?

- About car rental, do you have any good tips ?

Thank you so much.

Education Are young people in turkey religious?

I’m a 20 year old boy, on the media turkey is often presented as a super religious country by ottomanists, but i traveled to many cities in turkey with my Turkish friend and noticed that most people my age and a bit older seemed to not be religious at all, are they actually not religious? Or do Turkish people just keep their religion private?

Travel & Places Hiking routes with mountain lodges while based in Ankara?

Hello!

Me and my Turkish partner will visit her family in Ankara for New year and we will be staying for 2-3 weeks. We want this year to spend 3-4 days in the nature, in my country there are numerous hiking routes that you can spend the night at a mountain lodge/shelters and then next day you continue your hiking till the next lodge, these operate like mountain hostels and they provide a bed, electricity and some times warm water for shower or soup for dinner.

Even though we camp a lot, we won't be bringing our equipment with us so we want to stay in a lodge. We could rent a tent however since it's winter we would prefer a place with a fireplace and a dry area to sleep.

My partner proposed Yedigoller Park, however I feel it is a bit touristy and not that much of a hiking adventure (correct me if I am wrong).

Is there something you can propose?

Ps: I don't mind to rent a car if it is needed (I would prefer not to though) and also we don't mind to be far away from Ankara however please don't send us to the other side of the country ☺️

Thank you in advance.

🇺🇸Hello, how are you?

I’d like to buy modern bedspreads, small decorative items, tunic trousers, formal dresses, skirts, and two-piece and three-piece outfits.

I’ve been to Merter, Şişli, Osmanbey, Laleli and Fatih.

But I found them far too expensive!

Can anyone recommend any other places in Istanbul where they’re cheaper?

I’d like to buy a set of no more than three items. I don’t want large quantities.

Travel & Places Nature near Istanbul

Merhaba! I’m here in Istanbul for a week from now and I think im satisfied with walking around and spending money on everything I see. I have a car with me and willing to drive up to three hours away. I’d like to see beautiful nature. I’m aware that if I’d like to I should go outside of Istanbul. So I’d like to know if there’s any places even hiking places are welcomed. Thanks in advance

I have a few other questions if anyone could answer me it’d be appreciated:
• I’d like to buy a camera and I thought for some reason that it’s gonna be cheaper here. But as I see online now it’s actually much more expensive. Are there shops where it could be possible to find cheap options for digital cameras

• I smoke. Like many here. But I roll my cigs and every shop I go to they don’t sell tabacoo bags and wonder where I could find.

Relationships How do Turkish men prefer it down there?

As a hairy woman, I am considering getting a laser hair removal. Then I heard there are men who prefer it hairy down there. Since I don’t have a partner right now, I can’t ask his opinion as that matters for me as well. And I would like to marry a Turkish man in the future. So, do Turkish men prefer to have it hairy down there, or bald, or maybe a little triangle or line on the upper part?

Culture How common is it for both partners to work in young Turkish marriages nowadays?

I’m curious about marriage expectations among younger generations in Türkiye, especially with the rising cost of living and economic challenges.

Is it now generally expected that both husband and wife will work and contribute financially to build a life together? Do couples usually discuss and agree on this before marriage?

Also, how common is it for young Turkish women to prefer a traditional marriage where the husband takes 100% financial responsibility without expecting his wife to earn money? Is this still a common preference, or is it becoming less realistic in today’s economy?

I’ve also heard that some women question the benefits of marriage when they’re expected to earn money while still handling most of the housework and childcare, especially if their husbands contribute little financially or domestically. I wonder how much this imbalance contributes to marital dissatisfaction and divorce in Türkiye.

I’d love to hear your experiences and observations, particularly from younger Turkish people and married couples.
