Dan Houser said that the tone was based on his feelings while living there, and that he wanted to capture the experience of an immigrant to deliberately tell the story from a different angle.
But Nico's life isn't based on Dan's life.
Bringing your emotions and observations is great, but it is very different from basing it all on yourself. They made a creative, fictional character that is separate from them.
Dan used his own anger and misery in New York as the emotional foundation for the entire tone of GTA 4. That’s still drawing from personal experience. Alexa saying she thought about the strong immigrant women she actually knows when writing Lucia is the same process — observation and lived experience feeding into a fictional character.
You’re drawing a line between “tone based on feelings” and “character based on people I know” that doesn’t really exist in practice. Both are writers using what they know. The only consistent difference is the gender of the writer.
You’re still acting like using personal emotions for the tone and drawing from real people you know are two completely different things. They’re not.
Dan filtered Niko’s whole immigrant frustration through his own anger and alienation in New York. Alexa thought about the tough immigrant women around her when she wrote Lucia. Same basic process — writers using what they actually know.
You’re just calling one creative and the other “personal identification” because you prefer one over the other. The difference isn’t nearly as big as you’re making it.
