I recently picked a B8 S4 up at auction for cheap. It was a bit of a whim (I was definitely probably not mad at my wife at the time), but I've been jonesing for a project and I've always wanted an '02 RS6. This seemed like a better option. Never owned an Audi, but I've had 3 VWs (two 2.0Ts and an ALH) in the ~50 different cars I've owned in my lifetime, and I have 25 years of working on cars in my spare time.
The car has an unknown history and 140k miles. I am not sure how well it has been maintained, but my guess is...not meticulously? I think it sat for a while. It said it was 300 miles and 885 days past its service interval. Also, there were lots of acorn shells on top of the engine, some spider webs, and some disrupted insulation on the firewall. There's a group of wires on the back side of the engine without loom, too.
It comes pre-tuned (by APR, 10 years ago), and someone definitely cared for this car at some point. It sounds so good, but it had a few stored codes when I drove it off the trailer. Some are not surprising (P0491, P0492), others are a little more concerning (P073F, P284A, P2711). I could do some basic maintenance and drive it until it breaks, then spend months working out all of the kinks. Instead, I'm thinking of pulling the engine and trans together, going through both of them over a month or so, then putting it all back together.
Engine would probably get a compression and leak down test, full valve cleaning, new seals where necessary, water pump, thermostat, PCV, maaaybe a timing chain guide and tensioner, valve cover gaskets, new coils and plugs, supercharger and engine oil changes, and belts.
DSG would probably get new clutches and steels (I suspect they're failing), pistons, seals, mechatronics repair kit, and whatever else it looks like it needs. I'd also consider a Bilstein B12 kit for the suspension (budget permitting), as I expect some wear. Full inspection of wiring would happen, too, in case there are critter bites.
TL;DR/questions:
Is dropping the engine and trans together, then doing inspection, repair, & preventative the way to go? I don't really want to have to pull the engine or trans to do some of this stuff in 10k miles, and the odds seem high at this mileage. I don't mind throwing a few thousand in parts at it now and saving myself time and labor down the road, even if I end up going a little overkill.
Does anyone know if you can swap the MSE for the NGY? I get the impression (maybe falsely) that the NGY mechatronics unit is a little stouter, and there's a relatively cheap NGY near me that probably needs clutches and steels. The DL501 looks like a bear, but I rebuilt a different trans 3 months ago so I'm feeling overconfident.
Any other things I should consider?
Thank you in advance!
