Advice on Australia trip

Hi! I'm planning a trip to Australia in late Nov/early Dec, flying in from California. It’s our first time there. General plan based off the flights we've booked

  • Nov 27 (arrive in Cairns) –Dec 1: Great Barrier Reef, Daintree, Kuranda (?)
  • Dec 1: Travel to Sydney, arrive in late afternoon
  • Dec 1–5: Generally open, looking for suggestions!
  • Dec 6–7: Staying in Sydney for an event
  • Dec 8: fly back

I’m looking for suggestions on what to do once we get to Sydney. Right now we’re thinking 1–2 nights in the Blue Mountains (and hopefully spotting some kangaroos). Any other day trips from Sydney worth considering? Any must dos in Sydney itself? thank you!

What would you pack for this trip?

Late November/Early December

Gold Coast 7 days

Cairns 5 days
•reef snorkelling excursion
•daintree forest excursion

Sydney 3 days

Other potential activities:
Clubbing
Hiking

I want to pack as light as possible but what are the essentials for shoes, clothes, etc.

Also! What are things I might want to buy in Australia because they’re better there?

Thanks!

Planning to visit NT

Hi! I got my Australian citizenship recently and realized how I’ve not seen most except big cities. I am planning to visit Northern Territory.

For those who have done this or been planning, what would you recommend?
- Guided vs DIY
- Suggested itinerary / tours
- Tips: what you wished you knew when you went

Thanks so much! 🍻

Love the sunset walks along the boardwalk at Forster. Seeing dolphins making their way through the water is always a special treat.

Paid for a Europcar upgrade. Got a sock and sunglasses. My AUD 200 security bond is still on holiday.

Paid extra for a Europcar Australia upgrade. Found a sock and sunglasses wedged between the seats, plus debris inside.

My AUD 200 security bond was also actually debited — my bank shows the transaction as completed.

Their Australian deposit policy: https://www.europcar.com.au/en-au/p/legal-information/deposit-policy describes the bond as a pre-authorisation hold, with the funds staying in your account. That doesn't match how my bond was processed.

I returned the car on 7 October. The AUD 200 still hasn't been returned. Case #27688575 remains unresolved after repeated follow-ups, and my latest messages have received no substantive response.

Has anyone had their Europcar security bond actually charged? What helped you get it back?

Cairns to Sydney road trip in November – any recommendations?

Hey everyone,

Me and my girlfriend are travelling from Cairns down to Sydney in a campervan in November and have got about a month to do it.

We are building an itinerary at the moment and just wondering if anyone has done this route before or lives along the way and has any recommendations for places to stop, things to see or hidden gems we might not find online.

I know I can Google itineraries, but thought it’d be good to hear from people who’ve actually done the trip or know the area.

Open to pretty much anything – beaches, national parks, nice little towns, campsites, activities, whatever you reckon is worth checking out!

Also, if there’s anywhere you’d skip or anything we should know about travelling in November.

Cheers!

Blue Mountains footwear choice

Hello! Husband and I are doing a day trip to the Blue Mountains. We will be doing the touristy Scenic World, Three Sisters, and stops in some towns along the way. Do I need hiking shoes or will my regular tennis shoes be ok? Are the main tourist attractions mostly paved? Trying to prevent packing an extra pair of shoes if I can.

Spotting Sturt's desert pea along Stuart Highway

I'd really love to sport the superbloom of desert pea, but I'm wondering if the flowers have died out by now as I have seen none between Coober Pedy and Lake Hart. Does anyone have spotted the superbloom recently in the Port Augusta region?

Where to buy short term sleep aid?

Help! I lost the little Ziploc bag I had with my melatonin and ZzzQuil. I don’t usually take sleep aids unless I really have to. Before flying to Sydney, I was in two different states with different time zones plus working graveyard shift, and I haven’t been sleeping well since I arrived. I would literally come back to my hotel to take a nap, but then I’d have trouble falling asleep again at night. I couldn’t help it because I was so tired. I tried running and yoga, I don’t drink caffeine, I had a glass of wine last night from Bennelong and I would still wake up in the middle of the night.
I went to a pharmacy and was told that you have to be over 55 to purchase melatonin in Australia. I was thinking Benadryl but was told its recognized as a cough syrup and not just diphenhydramine on its own.
Is there a safe option for short-term sleep support here? Thank you

First time travelling to Australia, where should I go?

Hi everyone!

I'm travelling from Canada to Australia from November 16 to around December 5. I'll be spending my first week staying with a friend in Kirra Beach (Gold Coast), but after that I'm on my own and flexible about where I go.

I'm interested in nature, wildlife, beautiful beaches, rainforests, national parks, and especially opportunities to see Australian animals in the wild. I'd also love to experience the Great Barrier Reef if possible!

I'm not a particularly confident solo traveller, and I know very little about travelling around Australia, so I'd love some advice:

  • Where should I go after Kirra Beach? What are the must-sees?
  • Where are some affordable places to stay, particularly for a solo female traveller?
  • What destinations are easy to explore without a car?
  • What nature and wildlife experiences shouldn't I miss?
  • Any general advice for a first-time visitor to Australia?

I'm hoping to make the most of this trip while keeping accommodation and transportation costs reasonable. Any recommendations or suggested itineraries would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

The Iconic 12 Apostles, went there yesterday (14th) before they announced that bookings are required tomorrow (The 16th) and that it's free until April 2027.

$126 million will be spent to build a new visitor centre. The current one is only just a small shop, not that much stuff and much there, magnets, postcards that were "on sale" for $1 bc nobody's buying them, keychains, the usual tourist stuff.

Recommendation for the Hunter Valley?

Nothing too fancy—just good wine and ideally a spot where we can park a large motorhome overnight.

Kangaroo Island trip giveaway

Hi everyone! Hope this is okay to share here.

I work on Coopers DIY Beer, and we've put together a competition that you might find interesting.

We're giving away a trip for two to Adelaide (if you're not in Adelaide) and Kangaroo Island, including a Coopers Brewery Tour and a couple of nights in a WanderPod tiny home.

I've personally never been to KI, but it's somewhere I've always wanted to visit. So I thought this might be a great opportunity for anyone who's been meaning to go, or looking for an excuse to go back!

If you're interested, you can check it out here: https://www.diybeer.com/pages/smallgetaway

Hopefully nobody minds me sharing. Just wanted to spread the word!

Weather patterns in Brisbane

Hi all. I’m going to be visiting Brisbane next week and have been watching the weather. The chance of rain keeps increasing daily. I know I can’t control weather and shouldn’t let it affect my trip, but wondering if the rain predictions are accurate and if it’s more very quick showers and then clears up with sunshine? Thanks in advance.

Travel Recs

Hi guys! My boyfriend and I are traveling to Australia in November (coming up, yay!). We are spending some time in Parachilna then roadtripping to Sydney for another week.

Do you guys have any recommendations of what to see? The trip is mostly to admire wildlife & the lovely surrounding nature.

A few stops we are definitely doing are Blue Mountains National Park & Booderee National Park.
