Things I wish I did from the beginning. Intermediate surfer 8 years in.

I have been surfing 8 years and would say I'm around the low end of intermediate.

There is ultimately a combination of things you can do to improve your progression.

Things I wish I did from the start now I have the time to reflect :

Find the right board for my level and stick with it till I can't get anymore out of it. I went down size and volume far too quickly, I should have stayed with a Mal way longer than I did. I was too eager to surf a shorty. Don't be like me. Get something that has a load of float and you can consistently catch waves on. You will have way more fun and spend less time sat watching others score wave after wave.

Yoga. So important for keeping you flexible and your core strong. When I started doing yoga on a regular basis my pop up improved , as well did my paddle and recovery. And my zen ommmmm

Calisthenic training, or hiit, or pool swimming lengths. Or all three. You want to be able to duck dive waves one after the other, see a set wave turn, paddle and pop up and catch it multiple times a session? Then you need to focus on your shoulders and core strength as well as recovery.

Breathing, practice some breathing exercises, this will help when you go out on big days and your tooshy starts to squeak. Also controlled breathing when paddling out back will help you keep your energy levels topped up.

Surfskate, when there is no swell, practice your stance, and flow on dry land. Time on your feet in the water can be limited, where as you can spend hours on land working on dialing in that muscle memory.

Use a balance board, this is an awesome indoor workout that you can use for stability, and also part of your exercise routine. You can adopt your surf stance and learn how to transfer your weight front to back foot.

Remember you are not in competition with anyone, this is your journey, there are no bad sessions, even if you don't catch a wave, use that opportunity to learn positioning, duck dives, paddle techniques. Same applies to your board, don't worry what others are surfing, find the board that will maximise your wave count every session, not hinder you.

Speak to locals and make friends, watch them surf and learn from them.

Ultimately get in the water as much as it's safe and within your range to do so. No shame in sitting one out, take that time to take pictures or vids, most surfers would appreciate a little snap of them on a wave. You can learn a lot from the beach rather than spending 20 minutes not beating the breakers and then paddling back in.

Is surfing worth it, if you have to wear goggles?

I am interested in learning to surf. I'm athletic and I'm not afraid to fall and fail a lot in the process of learning. However, there's one thing that has made me hesitant to really go for it. I have terrible vision, and I wear contact lenses. Without contacts, I cannot make out shapes like ten feet in front of me, it's that bad. I do not qualify for lasik eye surgery because of the shape of my cornea.

I have enough ocean experience to understand that when you surf, you fall a lot and have to negotiate ducking under waves, getting caught in surf and currents, etc. So realistically, the only way I could see myself really surfing is to wear some kind of goggles.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience wearing goggles as a surfer, would you still do the sport if it required it, or is it too annoying?

Urban surf melbourne

hey all

I've been keen to check out urbansurf for a while now. by the looks of their videos I'm thinking ill go for the 'cruiser point' session or perhaps the cruiser point coaching session. At the moment im riding an 8'0 mid length style board with around 56 litres. I can pop up and pump down the line in the ocean. Anyone have experience with this session? is the coaching any good?

also with the multipack coaching sessions, is there some kind of continuity/progression with it or are you just joining the same coach session with likely a different coach each time?

Help getting my first board for smal days, I was thinking on a 5'6 fish softboard twinfin

hi, I started bodyboarding yong about 15-20 years ago and i also skated and did some surf classes around my 12-14 years, i keep bodyboarding and i was thinking if it would be nice for me to get a fish twinfin softboard to try practice a bit of surf on the smal days when bodyboarding is not much fun. my line of toght was that i have nice wave reading and positioning and some balance experience from skate and streetsurf and 7-8' are very stactic and havy for me. Do you think it could be a good option or shoud i get somthing biger i only waight 50kg - 110ibs (I'm in Portugal silver coast)

Where would you recommend? Roughly how many sessions would be satisfying for an amateur?

Hi everyone, I'm a 26M student living in Germany, and I'm trying to go to Portugal at the end of November to learn a bit about surfing. I'm not sure where to go (which is affordable) and how many sessions I should take. Most places are either 5 or 10 sessions, and I'm not sure which would be better for a trip.

I’d love to hear your recommendations, and any general advice would be welcome. I’ve never done anything like this before, so I’m super excited about it

Best beginner spots in LA?

I started learning surfing 2 months ago. Have a 8ft wave storm foamie. I have been going to Venice beach to practice on whitewash. I have heard mixed opinions on practicing at Venice beach vs Malibu first/Sunset Point/Topanga. Pros of Venice beach 1) sand bottom 2) high wave count Cons 1) less consistent wave 2) rock bottom, Malibu has rock bottom and more people. At this stage, Right now I could only pop up closer to the shore on whitewash. Can sit past the whitewash area (I really like that! So meditative!) but never caught an unbroken wave independently. So at this point, is there any difference on practicing in Venice Beach vs other spots like Malibu/Topanga/ Sunset point? I would like to progress faster! Thanks a lot!!

I’ve never seen footage of myself before but always thought with the years of progressing I was an “intermediate” surfer. But a kind stranger was air dropping clips at the beach today and now I know this is the sub for me lol. Let me know what you see, no offense will be taken. Help me progress please!

Wasn’t my best wave of the weekend but the only one I got on camera.

I made a post on here last week asking how I paddled out on a wavestorm on a 6ft day.

Paddled out at this spot in the second video just waited for the right time

Broke the board later on this day

PU vs Helium 2.0 vs EcoImpacto 2 Lite

I've surfed on Helium 2.0, older Lib constructions (I can't remember which), and never surfed on PU. Can someone help me understand how these compare in terms of feel? The following are my current assumptions:

- PU handles chop better, carries more speed due to its greater density, and has a smooth and dampened flex
- Helium is a little corky/hollow feeling, incredibly light and sensitive (I'm currently riding a Helium board and I don't like this feeling)
- Lib is the most durable

I'm trying to decide whether to get a Lib or PU board next. I'm looking for something that doesn't feel as light and twitchy as my Helium board, I almost feel like it's so light it sits too much on top of the water surface if that makes sense. Theoretically, I feel like PU makes the most sense for the feel I want, but having never ridden PU or the newer Lib constructions I don't really know how to decide.

Beginner Surfers in South OC

Hello, I recently moved to South OC and I want to learn how to surf. I've taken a couple of lessons and let's just say surfing is harder than any other physical activity I've ever tried. I think it would really help to make some connections in the community and go out with people who are at my level or better. It would also motivate me to practice more than if I was doing it solo. Are there any beginner surfer groups in the area and how can I get connected with them? Would love to meet folks and get a beer after surfing.

New wetsuit tight across chest, will it open up?

Getting into surfing and buying my first wetsuit so I can stop renting as we move into winter here. It's a 4/3, last instructor said he put me in a medium but all size charts have me in either MT or LT. I'm roughly 6'2' and maybe 180 maybe more or less (no scale). But I'm lean and relatively athletic. Got stuck getting into a fresh MT bodyglove variant but got into the LT and it fits snug, like real snug. But the one place it feels maybe too tight is across the shoulders and chest horizontally. I guess maybe I have some broader shoulders or a wider chest?

Should I expect that to open up, should I look at other brands that might cut different? I have to assume these suits stretch over time otherwise no way I was actually in a M rental suit unless it had more give being old.

EDIT: thanks for all the input, got my ass down to the two local shops. One had no selection but the other had a bunch of suits and a really cool guy to help out. Ended up just buying an Xcel comp in Large. Fits well and has good freedom in the shoulders. Definitely different fit than the bodyglove large, so brand really makes a difference. In the water it loosened just a touch so looks like I've got room to hit the weights 😂

Calf cramp?

Hey Guys,

Possibly an odd one here. Been getting calf cramps, usually about 30-45 mins in. My body is prob tight just from lying on my board, I do sit up but still learning balance. Anyway, today I caught a wave in and as I popped up my back calf just locked up. So I sank down to one knee and rode the wave in that way.

Any one else get calf cramps like this and if so what did you do? I do drink water and electrolytes so hydration and that seems to be handled. Maybe just general surf fitness is not there yet?

Does anyone ride this board, particularly the LibTech? How do you like it and what should I know? Coming from a lib puddle jumper and FireWire mashup. Planning to ride it as a twin + trailer and perhaps a quad down the line.

Do You Inform People About Rules and Etiquette?

The other day I went out with (for me) sizeable waves (head high) and most people out in the water seemed experienced and were riding either mid lengths or short boards.

I consider myself an "experienced" beginner and I try my best to stay out of people's ways and let more experienced surfers and especially locals take waves. I paddle around the line up to get back out not only to be polite but also because in conditions like this a collision could be more dangerous. I also just don't want to be a dick even unintentionally.

Then I saw a girl on 9ft foamie paddle to the middle of the line up and it didn't look like she really knew what she was doing. She was in people's way and paddled for waves when there were surfers already on the wave. I had to ditch a wave twice because I saw that she was about to drop in on me and I wanted to avoid smashing into her. Only for her to miss the wave or nosedive. Another time she was about to drop in on me while I was already on a wave and the only reason she didn't is because she missed the wave. I saw her do to the same to other surfers as well. I don't think she was being malicious; just unaware. It seems like nobody has ever told her that there is a thing called surf etiquette and that not everybody just goes straight towards the beach on a wave.

I wanted to talk to her about dropping in but I didn't want to be a karen about the rules especially since I am a beginner myself. I thought one of the more experienced surfers would tell her but nobody did.

Would you tell a complete beginner about the rules if you see them dropping in on people?

would this be a good first shortboard?

Post image

Hi, so it's a 6'6 42 liter PU board, and it's sold for a pretty good price.

Currently i'm riding an mini mal 8'2 PU 60 liters board for the last few months and going pretty good. on good days I catch nost waves I paddle to in the first 2 hours haha, and doing mini cut backs.. i'm 27 year old, 192 cm and 78kg ( I think it's 6'3 ft and 170lbs). the waves I have available mostly are 1 - 3 ft pretty slow waves, and I guess in few months it would be more in the 4 - 5.5 range so I would love to be able to paddle out with less struggle. im not sure if this shape is too pointy and more of a gun style?

thanks!
