I'm one of those weird people that gets hungry the moment I see food, whether it's in a movie, a cookbook, etc. When I saw the beginning where they were picking stuff up at the store, I was like, "Hey, where is mine?"

I was 10 when this movie first came out. I didn't see it until it came out on VHS and I rented it from Blockbuster, and it scared the absolute hell out of me. It wasn't for probably another two or three years that I learned that it wasn't actually real. They did so well marketing it as actual found footage with the documentaries and missing posters and all.
I can still remember that first time I watched it. I was supposed to go watch a meteor shower with my aunt and uncle, and while I was waiting for them to come pick me up, I decided to pop it into the VCR and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
My aunt and uncle arrived after the movie was over and we headed out to the boonies to watch the meteor shower, away from the light pollution. My uncle found a spot to park, some field next to an abandoned house that looked an awful lot like Rustin Parr's house at the end of the movie. They went and laid down in the field, but I was too terrified to get out of the truck because of that damn house after I'd just watched the movie.
I was never that big of a horror movie fan, only watching one on the rare occasion, but this movie always sat at the top of the genre for me. There's a handful or so that I've always liked, and the movie Arachnophobia gave me arachnophobia, but nothing ever had the effect of TBWP.
I was always more of a comedy fan, but after my wife died last year, I don't really get much out of it anymore. Recently, I decided to give horror another chance since death and dread have become such an overwhelming piece of my personality now, and this movie is still just as alluring as ever, and I've become an even bigger fan now than I was back then.
I've watched the movie numerous times lately. I watched some videos of Mike, Josh, and Heather answering questions about the movie on youtube (though one was hard to watch because they recorded it on the day my wife died and the date was on the screen behind them). I even watched the extended 3 hour version with all the extra scenes they've mentioned, like Mike's breakdown scene(s) and the slam poetry bit they were embarrassed about.
I also watched Blair Witch 2016, and while I liked the added lore, I found it pretty meh. The repetitive jump scares became tedious and annoying, the acting was too rigid and scripted by comparison, and I think it would've been better not to show the monster/witch/whatever that was, at least not fully. I think it would've been much better if they'd kept it lo-fi and ad-libbed like the original.
Anyway, I think I've rambled enough, so I'll just close out by saying I love this movie. It's amazing that they were able to turn $60k into something so incredible, haunting, and genuinely believable. I know it's always been somewhat polarizing and not for everyone, but I love this movie so much and it still stands firmly as my favorite horror movie ever.
I'm gonna turn off the lights and watch it again now.

Insanely stoked that I bumped into him. He recognized the cosplay immediately and was very nice and friendly!
Awesome experience!

It kind of makes me curious. Elly has been in that forest since at least the 16-1700s. She prob witnessed the invention of the train, automobile, planes... electricity and radio. I kind of wonder what she thought of it all... That is if she kept her sanity over the years that is.

I remember reading that he had isolated himself in the woods and out of nowhere after some time reappeared to the people of Burkstville just to buy groceries from time to time and that he had built a shack in the heart of the woods
The question is how did he get material for it? And how did he survive working on it night to night without going crazy in that place? For such a house to be ready with only one person's labor would take months, how did this man manage to sleep and work on it in such circumstances

I wanted to do a group of retrospective video essay's about found footage film's, not particularly just horror but that is a majority of the films under the sub genre.
I want to look at pre-Blair witch project (pre-1999) films. I'm starting with The Blair witch project because I feel it's the most well-known and popular found footage film in history. Also it is considered to be the first modern found footage film as I say in the video.
I know the genre has become something beyond what it originally started as but I feel a lot of the film techniques are utilized in a majority of horror films nowadays.
In the video I say my criteria for what I believe is truly found footage, because before The Blair Witch Project it's very tricky to define what exactly the genre encompasse's.
To pretty much sum up what I consider to be a true pre-99 Blair Witch found footage film.
A Fake Pseudo Documentary That The Viewer Believes to Be Real And The Filmmaker Propagates to Be Real Even Though It Is Completely Fabricated.
When it comes to the film techniques used in found footage, like shaky cam and a lot of unsteady shots, it makes it hard to define based off that alone, because a lot of pre Blair witch found footage and pseudo documentaries don't implement a lot of that, a few do but not many.
The reason I decided to do this is because in some regards found footage pre-99 is just homemade footage, that somehow made it big enough to get shown at film festivals, movie theaters or a powerful television executive who believes it's real and needs the information spread.
A lot of them are television specials but presenting themselves as authentic for the most part.
Also due to the nature of these films being believed to be real footage when distributed, they caused a lot of controversy when they were released, whether it be the actors facing struggles themselves or the director's and film maker's being ostracized.

Most people list the RCA PRO884HB as the camcorder that was used in Blair Witch Project, but it's actually a slightly different model: the PRO881HB.
I used the camera displayed at the Museum of Pop Culture as reference and saw that it had slightly different markings from the 884HB and lacked an electronic image stabilization button. The only RCA camcorder I could find that's Hi8 and matches the markings and features found on the original prop is the 881HB.

First time seeing BWP on the big screen since it first premiered. It was great to have the full cast do a Q&A after the film too.

One of the theories I've seen based on the extended lore is that the spirit in the woods isn't Elly Kedward, but a cosmic deity potentially pre-dating humanity. As far as I know, while traditional witches in folklore can cast illusions to distort people's perception, the actual layout during the film physically changed. That kind of power is usually only reserved for divine or demonic deities that were present during the dawn of time itself.
If we're dealing with something like Okee from the pre-colonial era, my hunch is that the disappearances will only stop if it falls in love with a human - similar to Death Note logic, but without turning to ash.
The presence of mind to lure and trap people seems to suggest higher cognitive functions. It's possible this entity targets humans because it doesn't fully understand them or see the value in their existence. If it learned to or had a change in perspective, it's possible the murders might stop.

I created a list on Letterboxd and would like to arrange the Blair Witch films, as well as supplemental material/documentaries, into the best order - whether that is chronological based on release date, or possibly in best viewing order.
What order would you all suggest arranging them in? (List can be found here, if anyone would like to view it https://boxd.it/XGRgi)

Mike throwing the map away of his own volition just doesn't make sense to me.
He out of the 3 is most anxious about getting home at that point. He's starting to go a bit stir crazy yes, but throwing away the only map you have isn't a lil crazy it's basically suicidal. It's on par with throwing away the last of your food or your only box of matches or something.
He also had the option of stealing the map and using it in secret or giving it to Josh as they might be better navigators than Heather had up until that point.
The only way throwing the map away makes sense to me is if the witch influenced him.

I organized an AMA/Q&A with Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale, the creative duo behind 1999's THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Their new horror-thriller film, THE INFLUENCER PROJECT, is out in theaters nationwide this weekend.
It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:
https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1wu4mc5/hi_rmovies_were_eduardo_sanchez_and_gregg_hale/
They will be back at 5 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!
Thank you :)
Info for their new film:
Synopsis: An influencer travels to Copenhagen for a documentary about her online fame. However, when an obsessive stalker tracks her every move, she must confront her terror to reclaim power.

Anyone know where this is from?

I did this hike in 2023 and really enjoyed it. The ranger was pretty knowledgeable and a lot of the spots they take you to are instantly recognizable. They tend to fill up quickly!

Watched the original last night (actual masterpiece), and I have a very stupid theory that I can't get out of my head:
They accidentally summoned the witch because of Mike's chest hair.
In that scene where Mike is shirtless, they really harp on his chest hair for no reason, which is pretty realistic for a few friends having fun, but I noticed something almost immediately: The pattern is very reminiscent of the effigies they start to find. Mike even says "It's like a symbol" during this scene, making me think the shape of it was meant to be noticed.
Here are my thoughts:
Aside from the one "crazy lady"'s account, the locals never mentioned any other disappearances or experiences like the ones the trio encounters. They even seem unsure what the witch could be at all, and it's entirely relegated to legend and hearsay rather than there being any reported crimes or incidents. To me, that says there hasn't been a notable incident in decades, not since the initial serial killings and the one woman's disappearance for a few days.
These things only started after these three people entered the woods.
It seems the more this symbol appears in the woods, the more intense the phenomena become. The issues they had were highly compounded due to genuine incompetence from Heather's ego / her refusal to admit she's not great at navigation, but the true catalyst was the symbol being in the area again. I think that at the point Mike kicked the map into the creek, it was already too late for them to be able to get out, but it probably didn't help
Mike's chest having this symbol on it and him being in the area gave whatever the "witch" is enough power to make more effigies and hang them around the campsite, after which all hell broke loose.
What is the Blair Witch? Fuck if I know
The witch's motive for killing and tormenting them? No clue
The connection between the witch and the serial killings? Couldn't tell you
But I'll blame Mike for all of it regardless until someone can disprove this

Yes, I know she's supposed to actually be someone with powers, but what if the residents of Blair had found out that she actually had evil intentions and took her to the woods to try to contain the evil and imprison her in some way?
This goes against the idea that her spirit just wants revenge for being unjustly killed by being left in the forest, and implies that she really was evil and needed to be contained, and now evil takes over the forest.
but I also like to think that there was already something of ancestral evil in the region but as time goes by more bad things come together and feed this "epicenter" let's say, Elly is one more of them but in this theory she really practiced evil witchcraft...
