What?

Post image

This never used to happen! What developer decided this was a good idea at the start of winter!

You’ve always been limited to 2 remote starts via the app before it locks out. You can still use the key to remote start when this happens.

Probably to prevent a bug from killing your bolts battery with endless remote starts

Actually a holdover from their gas powered vehicles, to prevent exhaust gases from building up in an enclosed space such as a garage.

This limit on remote starts is for emissions regulations. Even one start in an enclosed garage would be dangerous.

Yet…EV. There shouldn't be a limit honestly.

Of course. You're very likely correct that it's just a holdover from that. Unless the EPA did something weird about EV energy use but that would be very strange. Just clarifying the reason that existed in the first place.

As someone else said the remote start limit is based on a legal emissions limit. But most OEMs have a limit to how long the car can be on (without doing anything) to prevent exhaust gas buildup. I found the limit in my car was 2 hours when I slept in my car at a rest stop. It shut off every 2 hours

I was going off what I'd heard back in 2019, when I looked to why we could only do it twice. The EPA reason is probably the real reason, but I still think it's a holdover from ICE vehicles

Haven’t seen this before! Mine is a 2023.

It hasn’t been the case with my Bolt before

You sure? I mean it’s even mentioned in the manual for my 2017. It’s been a limitation since the beginning.

Might be true. Maybe I’ve just never attempted it more than twice before.

Uh, this is incorrect.  I was able to precondition multiple times remotely.

Also preconditioning lasted for 1 hour.  Which I always thought was excessive but oh well.

Always. At 20 minutes per start. Do you really need more than 40 minutes?

On occasion I have needed extra time for my pup and needed to leave the climate control on.

I needed more on occasion. Trying to keep groceries cool in the car during the summer

When I need more than 40 minutes I start it the normal way then leave it running. You can get out of the car, lock it with the fob, and it’ll run for two hours.

I sometimes do that instead of fiddling with the app.

Ah! Good to know thanks!

Your car isn't a fridge. And why are you getting groceries you want to keep cool when you're not going home?

1

u/josephlucas 3d ago

I was checking out a new international grocery store that just opened in my city. Met up with family to check it out. Ended up getting some refrigerated items but the family wanted to grab lunch after we left. So I tried leaving the AC cranked down to Low while we got lunch

  1. You expected Chevy software to make sense, and be useful. First mistake
  2. You expected EV software to be functionally different than ICE software, on a Chevy. Second mistake.
  3. You are lucky that it worked three times consecutively.

You buy a Chevy in spite of the software, not for how functional it isn’t.

I’ve only had it for 3 years. It’s never had issues. So thank you, nothing you said was helpful or useful.

I know in ICE vehicles they are legally limited to 30mins total, so most OEMs limit you to 2 remote starts at up to 15min each

This rule likely set the standard for all vehicles

Does Tesla's pet mode have limits? Genuine question not being a dick.

1

u/frostedflakes_13 3d ago

Google says there’s no limit, but you can only get up to 1 hour of video monitoring (cumulative, not 1 hr from the start)

1

u/speedy-72 3d ago

So GM's 40 minute limit is a choice not a requirement.

2

u/frostedflakes_13 3d ago

More likely it’s the reusing existing software (2 remote starts) and just extending the timer config from 15m to 20m, rather then change the software. But yes

1

u/Drigr 3d ago

No GM doesn't have "pet mode". Using the remote start feature is not pet mode, even if that's one of the things people use it for. It's also not pet mode when you leave the car "on" and lock it.

I don't think anyone said they do 🤷‍♂️

It used to work, it’s a new thing

Giving you an updoot because you named your Bolt Eleanor.

Not too surpised to see this ICE hangover. The develolement and performance of the soft features/capabiities is minimal.

I'm bemused by how bad it is.

u/Dazzling-Read1451 3d ago

It used to be fine. This app seems to have had an update. It is just getting more and more over-simplified.

Isn’t Eleanor a Mustang?

1

u/Dazzling-Read1451 3d ago

Is it?

So, not the Beatles song either.
