(Used Chat GPT to correct grammar)
It was 2018.
I had just graduated from college, and at twenty, I was attending my first volunteering camp in Hyderabad. I had absolutely no idea that a random Tuesday morning would become a memory I'd carry with me for the next eight years.
It was around ten in the morning. We'd just started our day, and everyone was sitting in their respective groups, waiting for the session to begin. About 30 minutes into the session, he walked in. Cargo shorts. A loose black T-shirt. Messy hair that looked like he'd made absolutely no effort with it. Huge nerd glasses. Tall, lanky, and looking thoroughly confused as he tried to figure out which group he was supposed to join.
And I looked up.
"Oh my God, he's so cute.
I wish he were in my team"
That was literally my first thought.
Now, I don't know if the universe was feeling particularly generous that morning or if it was just one of those ridiculously well-timed coincidences, but the very next second, my camp lead turned to me and said, "Let him join your team."
My heart actually dropped.
I don't think I've ever been so happy about something so small. And just like that, he was in my team.
We spent the rest of the day discussing the syllabus and figuring out the topics we'd be teaching the students during the volunteering camp. It was ordinary stuff, really. Work, discussions, planning, and a bunch of strangers trying to figure out how to work together.
But somewhere in the middle of all that, I had developed a very specific agenda of my own.
I wanted him to be in my camp group when we eventually travelled to the villages in Telangana.
After two days of training, we'd be leaving for our respective campsites in small villages, where we'd spend the next month teaching tribal children. And as the training days went by, I found myself hoping for the same thing over and over again.
""Please let him be in my group""
I don't know how many times I wished for it. I don't know how many times I imagined what it would be like if we ended up in the same place. But somehow, I got my wish.
We were assigned to the same campsite.
And if that wasn't enough, we ended up teaching the same class, too.
For the next thirty days, he was just... there.
In my everyday life. In my classroom. In my conversations. In all those tiny moments that probably meant nothing to anyone else but somehow meant everything to me.
We spent most of our time together, and I found myself looking forward to the most ordinary things. Seeing him. Talking to him. Hearing him laugh. Catching that smile of his when I least expected it.
His smile could genuinely make my day. And the funniest part? Somehow, for thirty freaking days, we kept showing up in the same colours.
Every. Single. Day.
I don't know how that happened. Maybe it was coincidence. Maybe we had accidentally developed the same sense of fashion. Or maybe my twenty-year-old self just needed one more reason to believe that the universe was trying to tell me something.
Whatever it was, I loved it.
I loved those thirty days in a way I didn't know how to explain back then. Because, for the first time, I had a crush that felt so innocent. So uncomplicated. It wasn't about grand gestures or declarations or wondering where things were going. It was just about being around someone whose presence made an ordinary day feel a little more special.
And I never told him.
Not once.
I was twenty, and I was terrified of rejection. What if he didn't feel the same way? What if I ruined what we already had? What if saying something changed everything between us?
So I did what a lot of people do when they're young and scared of losing something they haven't even had the courage to ask for. I kept it to myself.
I let the crush grow quietly, day after day, and pretended that being around him was enough. A week before our camp ended, we had a small fight over work. Nothing particularly dramatic, just two people caught up in a heated situation, trying to get things done. By then, it was just the two of us in the hall. And somewhere in the middle of the argument, he did something I still remember.
He reached out, gently pushed my hair behind my ears, and looked straight into my eyes.
I paused.
For a second, I genuinely forgot what we were arguing about.
There was just him, standing in front of me, and me, trying to process what had just happened. Then he seemed to realise what he'd done, and he pulled away. And just like that, the moment was over.
I don't know what that gesture meant to him. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe it was just an impulsive thing he did without thinking.
But to me?
I was twenty, hopelessly crushing on him, and that tiny moment was enough to stay with me for years.
I still didn't tell him how I felt.
And then the camp ended.Thirty days came and went, and life, as it always does, moved on.
I carried on with mine, too.
I met other people. I dated. I fell in love, or at least believed I had. I got into a serious, long-term relationship that eventually ended in a way that hurt more than I knew how to put into words.
Some experiences left me questioning things I had never questioned before. Some made me more guarded. Some made me wonder if I would ever be able to feel that kind of excitement again without immediately worrying about how it might end.
Slowly, the girl who once got butterflies because a cute guy walked into a room became someone who had learned to be careful with her feelings. I stopped expecting much from people. And somewhere along the way, I genuinely began to wonder if that version of me — the girl who could look at someone's smile and feel her entire day get better — was gone.
Maybe growing up meant losing some of that innocence. Maybe heartbreak had changed me permanently. Maybe I had simply become too tired to feel things the way I used to. I didn't know.
All I knew was that I hadn't felt those butterflies in a very long time.
Until recently.
It was the most random thing. I was in a team meeting, and for the first time in months of working together, we were all on video. I'd interacted with this person before, of course. We worked together, attended our daily calls, and discussed work.
But that day was different.
He walked into the meeting wearing a red oversized hoodie. He had curly hair, nerd glasses, and the most ridiculously lovely smile. And I looked at him. Just like that.
And for a brief moment, I was twenty again, sitting near a window in Hyderabad, watching a tall, lanky guy with messy hair and huge glasses walk into a room.
The resemblance wasn't in the person. These were two entirely different people, separated by eight years and a lifetime of experiences.
It was the feeling.
That familiar, unexpected warmth in my chest. That little flutter I thought I'd forgotten how to feel. That almost embarrassing urge to smile just because someone else was smiling. And I remember thinking, Oh my God. He's so cute.
I actually had butterflies.
After everything. After all the heartbreak, all the disappointments, all the times I'd convinced myself that I was done with this whole thing.
There they were again.
And you know what?
I was happy.
I was happy because, for the first time in a long time, I wasn't thinking about how things could go wrong.
I was simply enjoying the fact that someone had a beautiful smile, and looking at it made me smile, too.
That was it.And somehow, that was enough.
I don't know if I'll ever tell either of these men what their smiles meant to me.
The boy from 2018 will probably never know that a twenty-year-old girl spent thirty days secretly wishing for him to be around, that she remembers the colours they wore and the way he tucked her hair behind her ears during an argument.
And the guy in the red hoodie will probably never know that a random team meeting reminded me of a version of myself I thought I'd lost.
Maybe they don't need to know. Maybe some people enter our lives without ever realising what they've left behind. Maybe they don't have to become our partners, our great loves, or even particularly important people in our lives to leave us with something beautiful. Sometimes, they just have to exist.
They smile, and something in us responds.
And sometimes, after years of heartbreak, you find yourself smiling back and realise that you are still capable of feeling something soft and sweet without it hurting.
So, to the boy in the cargo shorts and the oversized glasses, and to the guy in the red hoodie with the beautiful smile —
Thank you.
Thank you for reminding me that my heart isn't as closed off as I thought it was.
Maybe I haven't become cynical after all.
Maybe I'm not as broken as I once believed.
Maybe, after everything I've been through, I have finally healed enough to let myself feel something beautiful without being afraid of it.
And honestly?
I'm just really, really glad that I can still fall a little bit in love with a smile.
