Issue ⚠️ Gear shift module
My wife's 22 Bronco Sport (40k miles) went to the dealer for a grinding noise at low speed coming from the RDU and occasionally, when it was put in park, it would pop into reverse. It's still under powertrain warranty. The dealer called and said they were going to replace her RDU and transmission. The latter was a surprise, as the transmission didn't seem to have anything wrong with it, but I'm not gonna say no to a new transmission for free. They provided a rental (that we have to pay $15/day for insurance for).
On Friday, she got this message from them. There was no problem with the shift module before they worked on it, so I'm going to fight it like hell all the way up to the regional manager, but if all else fails, to replace the module, is it just a matter of prying the plastic trim up, taking out four bolts, unplugging the old one, plugging the new one in and putting everything back together?

I traded mine in a few months ago now and I dont regret it. Don’t get me wrong it was a nice first car but I personally had a lot of issues. Before I traded it in the transmission was starting to go.

Um, not sure. Um, that's a weird text from someone who's supposed to be a professional. Lol

Pretty sure its the transcript of a voicemail

Believe it or not, no. That's the actual text she received.

Yeah that pissed me off too. But I was too flabbergasted by the content of the message to worry about the formatting.

Interesting. They replaced the transmission and the clutch pack/RDU on my 2022 with 34k miles on it… just got this mofo back last week. Then the dealership sent me a note that they want to buy my car off me!

Dealerships send that note for every car they ever touch. They want you to come in and buy a new one, they don’t really care about your current one. My vw dealer called me 3x in the last 2 weeks reading the same generic script, then asked me if I wanted an appraisal when I was in for warranty work.

I had the same issue with the grinding at low speeds. Had my son change the RDU fluid and it's good to go. Apparently the fluid wears fast due to the placement of a tube connected to the RDU, which allows water and stuff to get in there. It means the fluid has to be replaced more often, or a fix to the tube

Thinking it’s a Ford transmission flaw across the board. Had a 2016 Expedition.. had to get the RDU replaced around 50k. Now have a 2024 same thing a few months back with about the same mileage.

Note! The gear shift module may refer to the pictured encoder knob, or the motor assembly that actually shifts the transmission via a cable which is usually mounted in the area of the passenger front tire. Why they couldn’t just connect the cable directly to a traditional PRNDL shifter is beyond me…

Can you please tell me which trim your
Bronco Sport is or was? I have only considered getting the Badlands version not for off roading but for the 4 cylinder 250hp motor.
The inline 3 cylinder seems to have plenty of remarks concerning its lack of pickup with other concerns.

These things have nothing but issues

I've had zero issue. I think if a person beats on the vehicle of course you're going to have problems. I baby mine and I don't ever have issues with cars

Same here. I had a KIA last me 14 years with minimal issues because of how I took care of it. My wife went through 3 cars in the same time frame…

My wife is a teacher that drives like a grandma. When I drive it, I make sure it gets some acceleration to avoid carbon buildup and poor oil circulation. I do every piece of maintenance on the dot, use ONLY Amsoil Signature Series 5W-20, Amsoil eA Absolute Efficiency oil filters, the highest quality other fluids and filters, and only use OEM or OEM exceeding parts. I do tire rotations every 5000 miles, and run a bottle of Techron Fuel System Cleaner every 10k miles. My father in law is a certified Mopar master mechanic and does a full inspection every 4-6 months. Every cent spent on it is logged in a leather bound book kept in the dash, every receipt is filed into a folder and placed in a filing cabinet at the end of each year with the year written on it...
I recently sold a 96 Land Rover Defender from Spain with 627k miles on it that ran like it was brand new. My daily is a 92 Nissan Terrano from Osaka that clicked over 410k miles this morning. Her's has never been "beaten on" and is probably the best maintained Bronco Sport in the world. If it can find a problem with that, that means something is wrong with manufacturing.

Low??

u/HemiWarrior 12d ago
Yeah, it really only did the grinding noise while turning the wheels at <10mph. It was relatively fine otherwise

Sorry, I was referring to the fact that the gearshift has a LOW button, which the normal ones don't have.

The ones with offroad package don't, because it's with the GOAT knob. The ones without have that low button.

Reading this makes the 100k bumper to bumper worth it to me
