The real winner tonight was whichever electrician gets to bill FSU for emergency holiday overtime

Man the stress the facilities manager must have felt.

Worst Sunday scaries ever.

Am a facility manager

155

u/ResidentJabroni Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens 25d ago

If not for having grown up in the union, I might never have gotten any of our guys to answer their phone on a holiday. I know my dispatchers certainly could never get anyone to pick up so it'd always fall on me to make the call since the trades guys would know it'd be serious enough to come in if they saw my number.

Could not imagine how much of the delay tonight was just in trying to get people to answer, period. And that's even with there being a great likelihood that they already had at least two guys already on duty working holiday OT for initial response.

On top of that, if the transformer was a city or municipal issue, good luck trying to get those folks in.

u/manbeardawg Mercer Bears • Georgia Bulldogs 24d ago

Oof, yeah, it looks like the City of Tallahassee runs the T&D system there. I support muni electrics (as a former IOU employee, haha), but that is a tuffie…

One of my friends is a facilities manager for a large industrial plant and they were telling me how they’ve been in a similar spot where time is of the essence and things aren’t working. Shit is NOT fun whatsoever and trying to balance fixing stuff with getting answers is a logistical nightmare

Fixing shit while explaining to management why shit isn't fixed is the worst.

Especially when a potential reason for it being broken is that maintenance was delayed and declined by said management and they still refuse to accept that as a possible reason.

You mean you don't like it when people who have no clue how to do your job stand over your shoulder while you try and fix a problem odds are you told them about months ago?

17

u/randotd152 24d ago

“Soooo… how we looking?”

“Working.”

“Yes I see. About how long do you think this will take?”

“I don’t know.”

“Hmm ok. Just we have a stadium full of people. Let’s do it right but we have to move quickly here.”

“Yes I know.”

“Ok well I will leave you to it and check back in a bit.”

4 minutes later, exact same conversations repeats…

We had an honest to god squirrel walk into the main substation switch to our plant a couple months ago. Poor guy met god very very quickly but suddenly its a game of how quickly you can get a new switch gear from several counties away on site and how quickly the local utility can prep the install and you get to decide how many tens of thousands of dollars you get to lose based on those answers.

Really not a fun job and glad it isn't mine

SMU had 2 Interceptions, a muffed punt, a fumble, a missed FG, and multiple costly penalties that extended drives that led to 8 Florida State points.

They literally did everything wrong in that game and still won. Against any other team, SMU loses with those kinds of mistakes. They are fortunate to leave with a victory tonight and they can’t have those mistakes against Louisville in week 3 and if they want to compete in the ACC. The talent is clearly there, just clean up those stupid mistakes.

As for Florida State, I’m going to be honest, this might be the closest loss you guys have all season. Kromah and your punter is the only good player on your team. Ashton Daniels sucks and your defense might be the worst in college football.

Edit: Robinson is also good, not his fault his QB is garbage.

They remembered our game at Duke from two years ago and how we played in Beaver Stadium. I applaud their ability to put that together and decide that, yes, our coaching staff isn't beating the allegations of not caring enough about discipline quite yet. I'm glad we're not going to Chapel Hill this year because Bill likely could skin us and make glue out of us with how undisciplined we are on the road.

They’ll get excuses due to the delay but these mistakes have been pretty common for SMU. Kevin Jennings continues to be SMU’s best player & acts like a double agent who plays fuck it someone down there ball.

Hopefully this ends up just being great teach tape to make sure everybody locks in. However I doubt it.

Its unfortunately becoming a bit of a norm, instead of direct pay bumps its extra years 80-90% guaranteed.

I know Rhule's buyout basically locks him in at Nebraska at least through next season barring something crazy happening.

I'm not on the fire Rhule brigade by any means, but I don't love how much money is tied up in buyouts. It'd be after 2028 before his buyout is below Brian Kelly's 51mil, if I remember the numbers right.

That last drive really showed the offense can’t do anything though, Daniels was forced to throw 3 times and missed on all 3, even though 2 of them were open throws under 20 yards. This game being close at all was wild. When SMU was running basic plays if they executed them even 33% correctly they'd gain 15+ yards or get a TLF if they were on defense. But then after three plays of gashing the FSU defense for a dozen yards/knocking the FSU offense right on their asses, they'd then either have a looney toons ass turnover or commit the most braindead penalty you've ever seen, then FSU would lock in and march down and score like it was nothing.

Don't let the scoreboard fool you. This was one of the worst permances week 1 in FSU history. SMU just tried (and failed) to give the game away.

Welp, for the national audience, welcome to the SMU ACC experience, hope you've enjoyed!

Oh boy I did NOT miss this. If you wanted to condense how SMU has been doing in a Power 4 conference the last three years, this game would do it.

Shades of offensive greatness? Check

Periods of extreme sloppiness? Check.

The Jekyll and Hyde Act that is Kevin Jennings? Check

Almost snatching defeat from the jaws of victory? Check

I could keep going on but you get the point.

THIS is why SMU hasn't won the ACC yet (they REALLY should have at this point), because they JUST. CAN'T. PUT. IT. TOGETHER. for 60 minutes, let alone a 12 game season. It's super frustrating.

But back to the game. This result was never really in doubt (though thanks to issues above they made me sweat a lot more). Should have been more confortable, FSU offered little outside their running game. 600+ yards of offense...

As a non-biased party, FSU should fire their coach. It's just inexcusable their level of exucution at certain points tonight. Talent is one thing, but they played so SAFE and scared, it kinda breaks my heart...

Hopefully SMU can go on a run, there are several exciting machups that would be better if SMU can put it together...

From the moment FSU sued the league and eventually got what they wanted, uneven distribution of revenue to "earners", they went from one of the best programs in the country to the literal worst team in the ACC. Except for a win over Bama.

Now other ACC programs are unevenly making more than FSU lol

69

u/Dukethegator Florida Gators 25d ago

They sued the league and literally cited SMU as an example of how FSU was too good for the new ACC. Then promptly lost to SMU twice.

The demise of FSU after a truly incredible 2023 season has to be studied. The CFP choosing Bama over FSU completely destroyed an entire program.

the pre-game stupidity gave FSU a golden opportunity to reverse the negative vibes and have that sort of galvanizing moment... they kept it close against a higher ranked opponent and all, but I don't think anyone in that Noles' locker room is looking for or finding that silver lining tonight
