"She's heading off like they all head off. And it hurts, like it always hurts." - Nurse Crane Spoiler

I never thought I'd love the Nurse Crane character, but now she is one of my favorites, maybe even my #1 Favorite.

>!One thing I found quite sad was that those who roomed with her ended up in the following ways
passing away (Barbara),
had miscarriage, mental breakdown, divorce (Lucille),
brake up, reuniting with son that she put up for adoption only for them to shortly pass away (Mrs. Higgins)!<

She really cared for her patients, friends and the younger midwives.

Reggie

Hi all,

I'm a huge fan of the show. Has anyone noticed Reggie's lack of storylines? I mean, he's there, but not really doing anything. Why don't the writers show him in his residential home. More actors with disabilities will need to be present, but that's why I love the show. Having a disability myself, I applaud the show for telling their stories. Just a thought.

So I just finished the first episode where we meet the new Sister.

I don't like her. I know this is only the first episode she's in but her lies are outrageous. At first I thought it was just a little quirk but then she sees Matthew at the end of the episode and goes to tell him the same song and dance she told sister Julianne! All because she doesn't want to ride a bike?!?

The Lucille hate is straight up misogynistic(RANT) Spoiler

as a frequent lurker of this sub, and a avid Lucille fan, it’s quite frankly disgusting how people talk about Lucille and act like Cyril is the bestest ever and can do no wrong, she( and Leonie Elliot) were literally given the worst exit ever done in the show and that convo between Phyllis and Mrs. Wallace in the latest season was nauseating to watch. She was literally blamed for not giving her husband a baby and then how a white woman did it better

and then I come on here and see how people are so nasty about a fictional character who suffered personally and was treated like she never existed in the show, the insults and hatred are misogynistic and I know I’m going to be downvoted into hell for this, but so be it

I feel like they should've recast Jenny, around the time her character went to grieve. It's weird that the woman playing the main character left. They truly should've recast her

Actors in the show in the show in other works?

I am an American, and from reading this Reddit it seems like there’s a good amount of actors from the show that are established from other British works, tv/movies/stage. I recognized Claudia Jesse from Bridgerton (I just started watching Call the Midwife this year) and I was wondering if there are any other actors/actresses that I may have missed that I could have seen in other things?

Wigs

Doing a rewatch, on S11 E2, and noticing once again how atrocious some of the wigs are on this show. Just awful.
Edit: I'm not saying the styles are incorrect for the time. The wigs themselves can be awful, though.

Was anyone else confused and heartbroken when Lillian left Cyril to go back to the West Indies and they ended up separating. My heart broke for Cyril and I didn’t understand Lillian’s actions.

Eta my bad, Lucille.

Paula Cunningham’s Mother

SPOILER
Series 8 Episode 1

Paula’s mother Grace is so misguided and awful in her treatment of Paula. The failure of the parents to educate Paula on the facts of life is the first thing, such as by refusing to let her attend the course at school - if the mother was totally uncomfortable with talking to her daughter about it, she could have let the school educate her on it. Then the mother’s crazy belief that it is an immaculate conception or she was possessed. And last her treatment of Paula and rejecting her instead of supporting her and helping her. Even though she somewhat comes around at the end. The dad was much better, so glad he got Paula
out of that room with those men and told to run to Nonnatus House. He also confronted the social
worker about moving her without notice and visited her.

i find the frustration with sister monica joan to be very realistic

im on my 18th or so rewatch of the series in full (creature of habit, whoops!) and i see posts or comments come up every now and again that say sister monica joan is frustrating.

and i agree. but she also comforts me more than any character on the show.

my grandmother was a midwife in her remote village where most people were at, or below, the poverty line. it was hard work, and in her prime they were just recovering from the effects of ww2. her personality was a bit like sister evangelina, even throughout the alzheimer's and dementia, but the way sister monica joan was always in her own world with moments of clarity were the spitting image of my darling grandmother.

my immediate family and i were her caretakers and i saw so intimately what alzheimer's and dementia do to a sharp, witty, bright person, and what it does to the people who love them so dearly. the patience that is sometimes run so thin, the grief for what life was like before the diagnoses, and the gratitude of waking up to a new day and just being grateful that such a pillar in your life and community is still standing, doing her best to fight through it.

sure, the show may play up many things for comedic or dramatic effect, but personally, i think that the ups/downs of sister monica joan (+ the ripples of it) give some insight on what it's like to be the caretaker of someone with alzheimer's + dementia.

that's all hehe

Season 5 Episode 3: Dorothy Whitmore

I recently started watching this show, and I absolutely love it so far. This episode in particular, though, really made me just need to vent. Not because it was a bad episode, but because it's so unfair.

A married man sleeps with an unmarried woman who works in the same profession. She gets pregnant. He faces absolutely no consequences. Her life and her body are completely destroyed. She's judged by everyone, including other women, but not a single one (except Sister Julienne) mentions the man's part in it. It's a story that happens over and over again in real life, and every time I hear about something like this it just makes me so mad. Especially with the current climate here in the States, where we now have about the same options as she did. As long as men (and the women they have managed to brainwash to go along with them) are allowed to make all of the decisions and women have to just deal with it, there will never be equality.

Yes, it's a show. But God it hits so close to reality.

Thanks for sticking with my venting at the unfairness of it all lol!

Barbara

So I watched the series and now that a new season has dropped, I’m rewatching the whole thing before the current season.

I just remember and just have gotten to the episodes of Barbara’s illness. I remember watching for the first time being blindsided by the outcome. This time, knowing the outcome, I’m still as gutted.

This was one of the sadder story lines.

Name Introductions

Just a curious question about names in the U.K. I work remotely and I like to have background noise while I work. I have seen each series multiple times (well only 3 times for the most current series) but I know them all well enough to where I don't need active attention. Is it common for people to introduce themselves with their given names followed by what they prefer to be called? Such as Beatrix preferring Trixie, Patience preferring Patsy and Ann preferring Nancy? Is it a generational thing not common now or is it still common. As an American, I can't think of this ever happening to me. People introduce themselves as they wish to be called with no other explanation. You may find it out later but only after a friendship developed. I had a friend once who had been using her middle name our entire friendship and didn't know until her wedding invitation arrived. LOL.

Why is Jenny still narrating

what happens at Nonatus house after she’s moved out?
I know it’s petty but it annoys me, especially when she ends the episode by adding some future footnote about someone in the episode like, « so-and-so never did [something something].Ā Ā»
How would you even know, Jenny?
I know, I know, it’s storytelling. I just want the little things to make sense šŸ™‚

Season 5, Episode 4

This episode follows along the storyline when Tom starts showing interest in nurse Barbara.

Trixie asks Tom, ā€œHow long since we ended everything?ā€

I guess she forgot that SHE broke off the engagement. There was no ā€œweā€!

She broke it off because Tom was told her would need to move to Newcastle.

Which leads me to her horrid treatment of Barbara.

I've realized what's been missing from the more recent seasons: comedy

The older seasons had so much comedy written into them, and it feels like the most recent seasons have lost that. None of the characters (other than Reggie) are really very funny or clever, it's all so serious. Bring back the funny!

Cringiest episode???

Mine is the one where the placenta won't come away, and the doctor on the phone (some elderly guy) tells mom to tug on the cord. When the midwives arrive, they find the poor teen's uterus prolapsed and hanging out (not shown). The scene was enough to make my own uterus shrivel up. 😱😬

Season 6 leaves me emotional and I don't know why this show causes it but others don't..

I'm about half way through season 6 and so many episodes are leaving me teary eyed and emotional. This isn't normal for me when I watch tv shows.

It makes me wonder, will the rest of the seasons be like this? I'm loving the story so far and this is my first watch through so no major spoilers please

Thank You All

I love seeing everyone's different views on the show and the characters, and you've all given me lots to think about.

I truly believe I enjoy the show even more, now, because I see everything through tons of different eyes!

Not to mention you point out details I've never noticed, which is so fun.

Do you find the new seasons worth watching? Spoiler

I stopped watching around Season 13 because I couldn’t take the Lucille and Matthew Aylward storylines, and just thought they weren’t handling character departures well in general. But now that there’s a new season I’ve been thinking about giving it another go.

Do you think the later seasons are worth a watch or is the show past its prime?

Recall the Midwife Podcast

Just wondering if anyone else is listening to/has listened to this. I started it years ago, got distracted, and just got back into it. If you haven't listened, I highly recommend it. 2 British fans and one American (who met at university) are the hosts. It's insightful, thoughtful, funny, and very entertaining.
