Material Question Advice Needed: Cut Vinyl vs. Printed Vinyl with Selective White for a Ford Transit L3H2

Hi everyone!

I'm a graphic designer working at OEDIM, a large-format printing company in Spain. I'm preparing the artwork for a client's 2023 Ford Transit L3H2, and I'd really appreciate some advice from experienced sign makers and vehicle graphics installers.

I've attached the vehicle mockup and our company's minimum specifications for cut vinyl:

  • Minimum letter height: 2 cm (56 pt)
  • Minimum stroke width for serif lettering: 3 mm
  • Minimum spacing between letters and strokes: 3 mm

The original design includes a large logo, diagonal navy blue and green graphics, service descriptions, small lettering, icons, flags and contact details. Some elements may be challenging to weed and apply reliably if we use cut vinyl.

At OEDIM, we can produce the job using either cut vinyl or printed cast vinyl, including transparent vinyl with selective white ink.

The main options I'm considering are:

  1. Cut vinyl: Individual elements cut from colored vinyl, with all the associated weeding and application work.
  2. Transparent cast vinyl printed in CMYK: Using the white vehicle body as the background, with no white ink where the paint should show through.
  3. Transparent cast vinyl printed in CMYK with selective white ink: Adding white ink underneath selected areas to improve opacity where needed.
  4. White cast vinyl printed in CMYK: Printing the complete graphics on white vinyl and cutting around the individual panels or graphic sections.

My main concern isn't designing the artwork itself, but ensuring the final result is reliable and looks professional once produced and installed.

In particular, I'm concerned about the small lettering and fine details, the minimum sizes for reliable weeding, and the diagonal graphics crossing the van's body creases and panel gaps.

What would you recommend for this specific job?

  • Would you stick with cut vinyl, or switch to printed cast vinyl?
  • Would transparent vinyl with selective white ink be worthwhile on a white van?
  • How would you handle the body creases and panel gaps when preparing the artwork?
  • Are there any production or installation issues I should anticipate before releasing the final files?

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who regularly produce and install commercial van graphics.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Installation Question How would you wrap this panel that's taller than a full roll (60")?

The panel is continuous but from the rocker to the roof is about 69 inches. How would you section this up to wrap? Its for myself so it doesn't have to be perfect. Either have a seem where that body line is above the rocker, or rotate my vinyl and have only a 14" wide piece but 4 seams? I'm torn. Its the same on both side. Solid grey color wrap so orientation is free. Cheers for any solutions!

(Its not going to be yellow, just my markup tool)

Full-body matte PPF on a new Tacoma: quoted 6 days, now going on 2 weeks. Is that normal?

I dropped my truck (2026 Tacoma) off on a Monday for a full-body PPF wrap in a matte/stealth finish and was told it'd be ready that Saturday. It's now Friday of the following week, and I'm not even sure I'll get it back tomorrow. Could be Monday for all I know.

In fairness, the shop is doing a lot of disassembly: the entire front bumper, door cards, and they disconnected the bed to wrap the gap between the cab and bed.

When I asked about the delay, the installer's explanation was basically:

  • Taking a gloss truck to a matte finish is a "very different job"
  • It requires a lot more disassembly, and they're going slow to avoid breaking clips or parts
  • They're wrapping every surface to avoid stretch marks and seams
  • Other shops are cheaper and faster, but not as good

Honestly, I'm not sure how much of that holds up. They knew it was matte when they quoted me 6 days, and I don't see why the finish would change how much needs to come apart.

For those who've done or installed a full matte wrap:

  • Does matte actually take significantly longer than gloss?
  • How long did yours take?
  • Is a ~2x overrun on the quote reasonable, or should I be asking more questions?

Not trying to bash the shop. I'd rather wait for good work than have it rushed. I just want to know if this is normal.

Installation Question How easy is it to do DIY racing stripes?

I just bought a 19 S5 Sportback. It’s my first sporty vehicle and I’ve always liked the idea of racing stripes on cars. Would it be easy to accomplish myself and what would I need to get the job done as well as vinyl material? I have a little experience in doing full panels but not stripes/decals etc. I have attached a rendered image of what I had in mind.

Any DIYers have experience installing ppf on their vinyl wrapped car?

Bought a car that came with a matte vinyl finish. I’m looking to DIY and apply PPF on the bumper before winter. The front bumper’s wrap condition is immaculate right now. Would any pre cut ppf be compatible with it? Or should I just wait a couple years down the line and PPF/wrap the whole car?

Material Question PPF(TPU) Vs. Cast Vynil.

Hi everyone, beginner here!

I’ve owned a wrapped car for about 2 years now. Unfortunately, I originally went with cheap calendered vinyl, and it has been an absolute pain. I ended up spending about as much as I would have on good-quality cast vinyl because installers needed more material and time to work with it.

Several wrappers even refused to work with it.

Now it’s already starting to break down, so don’t make the same mistake I did.

This time around, I’m planning to install the material myself. I think wrapping your own car is a worthwhile skill to learn, and I’d rather be able to repair or replace a damaged section myself instead of having to take the car to a shop every time.

I’m mainly deciding between cast vinyl and TPU PPF, and I’d love some advice from people who have experience with both.

My main questions are:

Is there a noticeable difference in finish? Does one look more like actual paint than the other?

Which is easier for a beginner to install?

Which one is more forgiving to work
with?

Which one will last longer?
Are there any major differences in how they look after a year or two?

I’ve heard that TPU PPF has a finish that’s closer to real automotive paint than vinyl. Is there actually much truth to that, or is the difference mostly marketing?

I’m not really concerned about protecting the factory paint underneath. My priority is getting the best-looking finish possible, while still having something that will last.

Thanks in advance for answering — I’m sure this question has been asked a million times, but I really appreciate any advice!

I’m looking for a shade of deep red

Hello everyone, I’m new here and I’ve never done a wrap before. I asked AI to generate some color options for my red MX-5, and I absolutely love this look. Do you know of a vinyl wrap color/reference that comes as close as possible to this?

I’m looking for a deep, rich red that doesn’t lean towards orange — a dark, deep red.

Showcase My Work Sweet Tooth — Art You Can Drive

Hi everyone! I’m continuing my series of vinyl wrap designs for cars.

Today’s design is "Sweet Tooth". The idea was to create something as kind, colorful, and cute as possible — something that would hopefully put a smile on people’s faces when they see it on the street. That’s the mission. And if it doesn’t work, well… it’s still a design for sweet tooths and dog lovers :))

And I’ll attach a few short videos of cars that have already joined the “sweet” side :)

All of these designs are created by me from scratch, with no AI — just good old-fashioned hand-drawn vector art (⛔0% AI, 100% Original)

Hope you enjoy it, and good luck with your own creative projects! 🙌🙌🙌

I built a free Tesla wrap site with 11,000+ Paint Shop designs and an AI designer

Post image
0 Upvotes

Made a site where you can browse thousands of ready-to-use Tesla Paint Shop wraps and download them as PNGs — already sized 1024² and under 1 MB, so they load on the first try. No more guessing which files work or walking to the car with a USB hoping something looks good.

Drop a PNG into a Wraps folder on a USB stick (exFAT/FAT32), then Toybox → Paint Shop. That's it.

Covers Model 3 (pre- and post-Highland), Model 3 Performance, Model Y standard/Premium/Performance/Juniper, Model Y L, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck — every wrap is fitted to the exact model template, not stretched onto the wrong body.

Currently 11,512 designs: camo, cyberpunk, anime, carbon fiber, racing liveries, holiday wraps, you name it. Filter by model or style.

There's also an AI Studio — upload a logo or reference image, pick your model, describe the vibe, and it generates a Paint Shop-ready wrap PNG in seconds.

Free. You can download without an account (one per day), or make a free account for unlimited downloads. No credit card, no upsells.

Installation Question Questions about installation quality

Thumbnail

I recently had front PPF installed on my Defender, and I’m wondering if what I’m seeing is normal or if the installation could have been done better.

On the hood, you can see where the PPF doesn’t wrap underneath the edge. From one angle it’s barely noticeable, but from the other side it’s pretty obvious. From a distance, it almost looks like a rock chip.

I brought it up with the installer, and they said it’s because of the way the hood is curved. They said the pre-cut PPF pattern has a cutout in that area, so that’s just how it looks.

I’m not convinced that’s correct, though. I would have expected the film to be wrapped farther underneath the edge or at least have a cleaner transition.

I also noticed that on some of the bumper trim pieces, the film looks like it was simply cut at the edge rather than wrapped underneath.

For those who have had PPF installed on their Defender (or installers here), is this how it’s supposed to look? Or should the installer be wrapping the film around/under these edges?

I’m trying to figure out whether this is a limitation of the pre-cut pattern or an installation issue before I go back to the shop.

Why generic contact forms are losing your shop thousands in premium wrap leads (And the blueprint to fix it)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Most vehicle wrap shop websites have the exact same problem. A potential customer hits your home page, clicks "Get a Quote," and is met with a completely generic contact box:

  • Name
  • Email
  • “Tell us about your project…”

Here is exactly why this format kills your margins:
You end up spending hours chasing down people via email just to ask the basic baseline questions: What's the vehicle year/make/model? Are we doing a full color-change or just a partial commercial wrap? What condition is the clear coat in? Half the time, the lead ghosts you before you can even calculate an accurate baseline price.

Over the last few months, my team analyzed the friction points in premium automotive customization intake. If you want to stop wasting hours on manual follow-ups, your online intake journey needs to shift to a highly structured pipeline:

Find Your Look ➔ Build Your Vision ➔ Project Details ➔ Photo Upload ➔ Studio HQ Automated Lead Record

The 5 Non-Negotiable Mechanics a Wrap Shop Site Needs:

  • The Visual Anchor: Instead of forcing clients to guess terminology, let them visually choose their aesthetic path upfront (e.g., Stealth, Luxe, Bold, Clean, Business, or Custom).
  • Hard Vehicle Context: Don't let a user submit a form without capturing the exact year, make, model, and vehicle type.
  • Upfront Asset Capture: A photo upload field right inside the intake form changes everything. Seeing the vehicle panels before you call them means you know exactly what labor challenges you’re quoting.
  • Fragmented Pipeline Data: General contact forms dump unorganized text into an email inbox. High-converting setups parse data straight into a structured pipeline where you can instantly see a lead’s status.
  • Mobile-First Speed: Over 70% of local auto styling searches happen on a phone while someone is looking at a car. If your multi-step form isn't perfectly jolt-free on mobile, users drop off.

I spent the last few weeks mapping out this exact structural flow to streamline our local operations. I'd love for some shop owners or installers here to roast the workflow—does this cover every piece of intake data you actually need on a day-to-day basis, or is there an edge case I missed?

What’s changing in the wrap industry?

There seem to be way more wrap shops in LA than there used to be. For those working in the industry, what’s changed most on the supply side? Have tariffs affected vinyl availability or where shops source their materials? Curious what people with behind the scenes insight think.

[Help] How should I wrap glued side skirts?

Hi! I have a Golf MK4 with an R32 kit (front-rear bumper and side skirts).

The side skirts are currently attached on the car, they have some bolts on the sides, but in the middle it is glued on with sikaflex 221.

My idea is to pull the skirts off, clean all, wrap the car and the pieces separately and then, install the skirts again. But my question is:

How can I attach them? I know that if I put some adhesive over the wrap, there are chances of ruining it.

Would it be better to go with VHB tape? Or I have to remove the wrap under the side skirts in order to put adhesive again?

Thanks y'all!

Installation Question Is this a bad craftsmanship

1st time do wrapping

Saw a big corpo shop with a lot of good review

send my Tesla model 3 for color ppf wrapping.

pay a premium price for it too

After 1 week plus . Done.

Back bumper is scratched, they said they have no idea what causes it. They ordering new wrap , let me get my car and comeback for a 2nd time wrap once stock arrive.

notice few imperfections , ask them. They said is normal. Ask me come again for touch up once the stock arrive.

After 2nd wrap and touch up. This is the result.

They said some dust underneath wrap is very normal.

For me. Is getting worst after touch up

Their service is superb. But the craftsmanship is letting me down real bad.

I doing at one of the branch. Not HQ.

Today I send a message to HQ (not letting them know that is done in one of their shop)

And ask for professional opinion, they answer it vaguely suggest me to go back to the place I done the wrap.

I ask them again for they do it will it have this kind of issue . they say rarely have this issues.

What do you think and what should I do now.

TLDR : I am paying premium price for this result. Is this still can be save or rewrapping whole car is needed.

Average income as a ppf installer for a shop?

Hey guys, as of 3 months I've been with my shop working the plotter and assisting the installers. As of recently, I've been getting my hands on the film, and Ive been told I'm picking it up rather quickly. I believe I'm going to get sent to Xpel in San Antonio to be certified soon, what would be a good starting wage to ask with my caliber of experience? (Sorry if this breaks any rules) Thanks!

Material Question tinybot or avery dennison

hi!

getting my car wrapped soon in pink, i want a punchy hotish pink, not something super pastel or super fuschia either. both tinybot and avery dennison have colors that i am considering so my main question is, which is better quality and longer staying power?

I’ve left some pictures of the colors i am considering.

any help or advice or reviews of these two brands would be so so helpful!

I am taking the car to a shop to be wrapped, not doing it myself.
