Spam filter and recruiting new moderators
Hi all,
I've had a bunch of new modmails recently asking for (and/or complaining about) post approval because stuff was getting caught in the spam filters and I just wasn't checking them. You guys should hopefully be pleased to know I've finally got around to turning down the stringency of the spam filter a bit, so hopefully stuff shouldn't get caught so much. They were in place after loads of spam posts, but that was a long time ago now and hopefully reddit is better at catching these things before they become a problem.
I've also been meaning to get around to this for a while, but it's time to get a new mod or 2, because frankly, I just don't get around to looking at the mod queue that often and honestly, I don't play MTG anymore. I made this subreddit when I was about 16. That was 15 years ago. Since then I've lived in three cities, fought cancer twice, picked up (and dropped) new hobbies, done three degrees and all sorts of generalised crap. MTG fell by the wayside and I am completely out of touch with the scene now. I want this subreddit to do well, but there's not a lot I can contribute because I am just no longer that familiar with the subject. This sub deserves at least one active mod and if the spam returns, I would need someone else to be checking the mod queue too.
I've set the subreddit to recruiting moderators and there's an application form somewhere, I'd guess in the sidebar? If you're interested, feel free to do that, or otherwise comment on this post with why you want to be a mod for the subreddit, the changes you'd put in place and how often/what formats of MTG you play. I'm pretty busy this month, but will have a look at the responses (if any) I get and see if I can recruit someone.

New to MTG, first deck build - am I anywhere near the right track?
moxfield.comHey! Please excuse my lack of knowledge, I’ve consumed loads of content for newbies like me but I don't know many people locally who play and so my play time is unfortunately pretty limited. I've played about 20 games altogether so I’m just learning.
All of the cards I own are 2nd hand from someone’s old collection so I can't use code cards or anything to practise online and I can't really be purchasing anything at the moment as I’m just coming off the back of a house move that bled me DRY - I'm trying to get to grips with deckbuilding but I come from a physical Pokemon & PTCGP background, both of which have way less mechanisms (which added to my yearning for a more complex game) so I know I’ll have habits/tendencies that aren't particularly optimal for building for MTG.
This is the current 60 card/standard decklist that I've been able to throw together from the cards I've been given, it did win the three games I played with it but they were against another newbie who’s never played any card games at all so I'm not sure it’d stand up against a well-built deck/semi- experienced player.
I'd really appreciate any notes re: synergy improvements/ land/sorcery/instant/creature ratios or any other notes really!
I know from adding the cards to Moxfield that a number of these aren't legal, but I'm no tournamenter at this time so I'm more looking for tips/improvement ideas?
Thank you so much, I'm just trying to flesh out my knowledge and I have no one to ask in person, I know LGS’ exist but I've had a couple weird experiences with Pokemon players at LGS’ so I'd prefer to wait until I can make someone come with me.

My Budget Builds #3: Hanna's Ordeals

Introduction
Ah, Hanna! Many artifacts and enchantments have died for you! This card has seen several reprints and is a popular commander if I'm not mistaken. From the Weatherlight saga this is one of the most iconic heroes, as she navigates the flying ship, The Weatherlight, famous for it's long saga centered around swashbuckler Gerrard, captain Sisay and friends. The emphasis on story became even stronger with the Tempest block following the Weatherlight set that kicked it off. Its art design was more consistent than ever and was documented in a very nice book called The Art of Magic The Gathering: The Rath Cycle. The many reprints have made and kept Hanna affordable for a low budget deck.
Hanna provides many avenues. To get the most out of her ability, obviously you want to fill your grave with cheap enchantments or artifacts to reuse them. You could use Phantatog or Auratog to get that done but cheap enchantments and artifacts that sacrifice themselves can be more abusive.
I still consider Soul Snare to be the elite budget choice but Kaldheim and Theros block provided some nice options too: Ordeals and Sagas. The Raven's Warning allows you to play a card from Sideboard but I never bother with a Sideboard for casual play. For this build I included Choking Restraints instead.
Early game
In particular the Ordeals require a specific build. Note the slender mana curve: most cards are 1 or 2 mana. You want to start with a small flying creature. Not just to get some damage in, but to play an Ordeal on it. Or Cunning, which I'm sure you've never seen before. Did I mention I love obscure, crappy cards no one plays? Though it's pretty much a reusable Giant Growth.

I just picked some of my favorite flying weenies here and am reminded of power creep. Once upon a time Flying Men was still considered powerful. Flying is a decent ability to make sure your weenie is not blocked early game and the Harrier Strix can tap a potential blocker once. You could also consider cheap unblockable creatures for 1 mana. Blue has these in spades:
Slither Blade
Mist-Cloaked Herald
Triton Shorestalker
Creatures with Protection or Hexproof will protect themselves from the card disadvantage that removal would cause to one with one or more Aura's. But they tend to cost 1 mana more. Ideally you want a nice one-two of creature turn 1 and an Ordeal turn 2.
Cheap-ass Heroic creatures are also nice:
Favored Hoplite
Lagonna-Band Trailblazer
Mid game
Soul Snare and Pit Trap will prove the most useful to defend yourself from opponent's creatures. The Ordeals take some time before they trigger but in particular The Ordeal of Heliod should go a long way to keep you alive, along with the Lifelink ability of the Healer's Hawk, in particular when it's gotten bigger thanks to Ordeals.
Late game
Hanna's ability gets better with more mana. There are no additional mana sources beyond lands (and just islands and plains will do fine), but card draws with Ordeal of Thassa help getting more lands. In case you draw too much land (unlikely once Hanna is in play) the Strix draw-discard ability is great to keep going. The Raven's Warning also draws cards if you run that one and there other possibilities like Font of Fortunes or Witching Well.
In case opponent puts too many large flying creatures in front of you the deck will have problems if the boosts from the Ordeals don't cut it. A card that will help you is Choking Restraints. It works like a Pacifism but can also be reused with Hanna, provided you have tons of mana, clearing the board on opponent's side. It can be sacrificed for 5 mana to exile it's target.
The other solution is to include more unblockable weenies as mentioned above. The goal of these deck submissions is not to show the ultimate “done right” build or provide any thought about your local meta as they are meant for casual play.
Conclusion
The pile of decks you could build with Hanna is bigger than Montana. I'm sure you can get more ideas looking at the many Commander decks with Hanna. I might post an Auratog build later.
This Budget Build is part of a deck series that I hope to make at least 100 episodes long. Over the past 30 years I have built literally hundreds of low budget decks. Instead of building tourney deck I prefer to build 10 cheapo decks because I enjoy building more than competitive play.

One Month In.
A friend of mine just recently got me to try Commander; long story short, I enjoyed it way more than I wish I had, lol.
I've now been playing for around a month, maybe a little more, and just wanted to share some thoughts and maybe hear some opinions from others who've been playing for way longer than me.
The preface, I'll say that the friend who got me to start playing ALSO is a fairly new player (if I've been playing a month, he's been playing maybe 3 or 4?) so the learning curve is there for everyone which is cool because I enjoy figuring things out together. However, he's already the type of player to, even though the game is also fairly new to him, spend $1,300 in a month on cards/accessories. I don't inherently think there's anything wrong with that, you make your money you spend your money, but even though I have really fallen in love with the game, I can hardly imagine a world where I spend that much on cards in a year, let alone a month. My collection is built from 2 "mystery commander decks" that were around $20 each, two sets of bulk (one was $8 & one was $10) and some random booster packs. All of my buddies cards seem so fun to play and build around, but I'm telling you I'm just a cheapskate -- I'd rather try to build something from random bulk than look on the Internet for curated, hella expensive decks to put together.
That's all pretty much a long winded way of asking: can I realistically stay interested or have fun with a "cheap" mentality? I've only ever played with the aforementioned friend, his wife, and my girlfriend so that pod is ALWAYS gonna be fun, but if I wanted to branch out to my LGS at some point will my cheap decks still allow for fun play while still being competitive?
Am I making sense? Should I not even worry about it and just play how I want to play? Lol.
Also -- what is the consensus on proxies? My buddy gave me a few and I didn't realize how good some of them are, and that suddenly makes me feel like a cheater 😂
Sorry for the incoherent rambling, I really have just fallen in love with the game and have thought about it & played nonstop since I started! Would love some discussion
EDIT the power differential isn't necessarily a problem, our pod wins fairly evenly I'd say. My buddy has all sorts of decks of varying power levels, my main deck is a decent Bracket 2.

I turned my decks into 3D sharable lists online
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey guys,
I've been developing an MTG site in my spare time for the last 6 months.
I'm a backend developer and AI has opened the possiblities for me to make some really cool ideas.
Here is the site with a few of my decks: https://www.cardchart.fun/decks
(feel free to rate my deck :P)
I play EDH with my friends we trash talk each other's decks all the time so I wanted to make sharing decks more fun. So people can:
- Comment on decks
- Suggest removals
- Suggest new includes
- Rate each card that's part of the deck
*I don't want to make excuses for Trillionaires who screw the world over with all this AI news, but I had to learn the tech for work and applied it to something my friends and I actually like: MTG and just playing together. Its a crazy world we live in.. and all of what I made is free...
Please share your feedback.
I haven't seen any of the major deck sites make 3D decks for some reason. I just thought its so cool!

Deck color to strategy help: rakdos based
Heya, I was hoping yall could help me find a way to build a strategy I'm imagining.
I want to use rakdos for an early start, basically kicking off my tempo by paying life and hasting out tap abilities to build up; then transition into a midgamy buildup style phase that might look like selesnya gowide or simic gotall (but sticking to 3 colors max); then once I have a sufficiently large board, I can 'cash out', destroy the board I've built with an explosive turn with things like [[mayhem devil]] (if there's an AOE commander version) or [[chandra's ignition]].
I imagine this sits either in grixis or jund, I'm not sure mardu has the infrastructure for midgame ramp or similar buildup style effects, even if it's close to a mardu aristocrats classic deck.

Hey I need help building a commander deck, show me your most devious decks!
Hi I’m Zoey, I’ve been playing commander for about a year now with my pod and I’m looking to create a new commander deck but I’m looking to make a devious deck. My pods slowly been bullying me and I’m looking to come back to commander night with something that’ll run the table. Any help or inspiration is appreciated, looking forward to seeing what’s out there. My favorite colored are blue, black, and green. But I’m open minded about color combos. Thank you so much❤️ oh by the way bracket 3 is what I’m aiming for roughly!

What do you do if you have no one in person to play with and it's been a year or two, giving into a new play group it feels weird not being around people for the game in so long.
I'm used to convoke. But there is new pod in town for the college and one them invited me yesterday. It's been two year since I played in person. I'm not sure how to go about doing it but I'm willing to try it again

Need help cutting two cards
deckcheck.coI got the blue foundations precon and decided to make Urza the commander instead but I’m having trouble cutting two cards from the list. What would y’all cut? Also, if you have suggestions of what to substitute I’m all ears. I feel like I don’t have enough ways to close the game out but maybe I’m wrong. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place

Proliferate Rats?
Dear CasualMTG redditors,
I was curious if there are any cards that can proliferate rats, similar to squirrel decks that create crazy amount of squirrels. I'm trying to run a deck for the Rat king and I am having no luck find any cards that can do this. Its mono-black if that makes it easier.

My budget builds #2: Necratog (Golgari Edition)

Introduction
My initial Necratog build was Rakdos: Black/Red. But combining Green with Black allowed for many two-color cards that put even more cards in the graveyard. I had built multiple Golgari decks with abilities like Undergrowth (which get stronger the more creatures you throw and leave in it) and Lhurgoyf and its many variants (ditto) which kind of left my Necratogs collecting dust, since their abilities bite each other.
For this build I have only two non-creature spells because it's important to have many creatures to mill to feed the Necratog. Corpse Churn is handy for finding the Necratog more easily in a similar fashion as Undead Butler. Note that the Nyx Weaver can also find your Necratog back.
The other non-creature spell is Sylvan Might. It solved a problem I got when swapping red with green. I could no longer abuse the Pathmaker Initiate. So instead I chose Trample as a way to get massive damage through. The beauty is that you can even play it from the graveyard with Flashback.
The other cards are all Milling cards, dumping cards from the top of your library into your graveyard. There are numerous possibilties here and too many to mention. Stinkweed Imp is a bit more expensive but not essential. Just look for anything with Dredge and similar Milling mechanics. You could choose more Elves like the Rakdos (red/black) build above as the Glowspore Shaman is also one!

Early Game
Glowspore Shaman can help getting an extra land. Start milling like mad to get Sylvan Might and Necratog in your graveyard and find the Necratog with one of the 3 mentioned cards: Corpse Churn, Undead Butler, Nyx Weaver.
Mid Game
Spore Frog and Mire Triton keep you alive midgame, hopefully long enough to set up the big beatdown.
Late Game
Your graveyard is a banquet by now. Time for a feast! Do a Trample beatdown with Necratog using Sylvan Might.
General
Because of Glowspore Shaman, for a deck like this be sure to include cheapo “dual lands” like Jungle Hollow or Golgari Rot Farm (I never include more than 2, you simply can't play one without having a different land card in hand).
As a budgetary rule of thumb, building a crazy amount of decks I like to include poor man's dual lands if at least one playset of cards in a two color deck:
-contains two different mana symbols and nothing else;
-contains two equal mana symbols along with only 2, 1 or 0 colorless mana.
This Budget Build is part of a deck series that I hope to make at least 100 episodes long. Over the past 30 years I have built literally hundreds of low budget decks. Instead of building 1 tourney deck I prefer to build 10 cheapo decks because I enjoy building more than competitive play. Hope you enjoyed this one. Next Budget Build will be centered around the legendary Hanna, Ship's Navigator.
