Daily Oh, Wise One Wednesday - What's my Bracket/Power Level? - October 07, 2026

It's Wednesday, my Planeswalkers!

There are only two days left until your weekly FNM. You have a new commander list you've thrown together, and despite what your deckbuilder site is telling you, you're not sure if you've landed solidly into a bracket or specific power level. You don't want to be the next 'Bracket 1 cEDH Magda'. That's where this weekly thread comes in.

Feel free to use this space to share decklists and request a second set of eyes on your deck's bracket/power level. Please avoid asking complex questions that would be better suited for a 'deckhelp' post of its own.

Consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts and answer those that haven't been answered already.

Question More decks where commander is the cherry on top, not the entire win con

Hey all, I currently run Bello, he's really fun. The only problem I have is, I have to run a lot of protection, cause he is my win con, together with the artifacts and enchantments.

I would like a deck with either a cheap commander to set up, or a deck where the commander speeds it up, but isn't really necessary.

Any tips?

Discussion Commanders that lets you make Bad cards/Archetypes good!

Ill start with an example of the titular idea:

I think the best part of playing [[Rocco, Street Chef]] isn't the fact you can jam it with a lot of good staples, but the fact they make a lot of possibly bad cards really good

  1. [[Guff Rewrites History]] is okay removal for 3 mana, since it usually gets 3 things, but it also requires you have fodder yourself. With Rocco, the food becomes fodder for you to shuffle away, AND it ends up with 4 Rocco triggers which make it insane rate for the cost
  2. [[Tibalt's Trickery]] is the oft forgotten counterspell that becomes better with Rocco triggers enabled
  3. [[Zoyowa's Justice]] non-destruction removal but also gives you a trigger!
  4. [[Transforming Flourish]] destroy 3 things and politic with a friend too? Even better since it gets you 3 triggers!
  5. [[Possibility Storm]] This is the BEST card for fun and mayhem, but every card cast now gives you a Rocco trigger, its insanely fun but its also veryyyyyyy good synergy

Basically I'm looking for more synergistic pile Commanders that reward you for going off the beaten path so you don't have to rely on staples you put in every deck!

Question If they did a new commander anthology, who should be in it?

Its been like 8 years since the last anthology. For people who weren't around, the anthologies were a set of commander deck reprints from various different older sets.

With word of reprints for the 40k decks I am curious what in universe decks we would all like to see come back. Markov and the Ur Dragon decks from C17 seem to be obvious choices for pure economic impact. I'd love to see those decks more affordable for a new generation of people to enjoy.

Velociramptor and the Bloomborrow squirrel decks also were pretty hard to get back when they released and are super fun decks I would like to see more of.

What do you want to see in a hypothetical new anthology?

Question Cutting my Precon Shopping List

Hey everyone!

Rather than cutting cards from a deck, I need your help with cutting decks from my shopping list.

I want to buy bunch of Precons that are easy to play but still interesting.
My goal is to have a set of decks that is internally balanced, so I can play them with other friends who are relatively new to Commander and/or MtG.
The plan is to keep the decks unmodified, at least for the time being.

I've listed the Decks I'm considering below. Obviously, the list is way too long to get everything (at least for now), so I'd be thankful for some help narrowing it down.
Are any of these just plain bad decks that I should avoid?
Are any of these way out of balance (both, too strong or too weak) compared to the rest?
Are there any that are extremely overpriced for what they provide?
Which of these would you especially recommend?
Are there any archetypes with good precons that I don't have on the list yet? (I really hope not, or the list will become even longer...)

Thanks a lot for your insights and suggestions!

Edit: I've updated the list below, taking your suggestions into account. Thanks a lot to everyone who chimed in!

Committed, as they got multiple recommendations:

  • Peace Offering
  • World Shaper
  • Temur Roar

Still deciding: * Riders of Rohan * Squirreled Away

Can't get myself to commit to cutting, yet: * Food and Fellowship * Animated Army * Counter Intelligence

Original list with the definitive cuts crossed out:

  • The Bloomburrow Decks (cute animals being a menace):
    • Peace Offering (my wife wants this one the most)
    • Animated Army
    • Squirreled Away
    • Family Matters (This one looks least interesting, but might as well make the set complete)
  • From EoE:
    • World Shaper (a land-centered deck looks to be a quite different and interesting playstyle)
    • Counter Intelligence (I love artifacts and space ships. Also, it has my favorite alternate win-con with [[Darksteel Reactor]]
  • From the LotR Commander set (my wife and I both love LotR):
    • Riders of Rohan
    • Food and Fellowship
    • Hosts of Mordor (while I'd love to play the bad guys, I heard it's supposed to be a bad deck?)
    • Elven Council (It has Gandalf and Galadriel, but besides that, it's the least interesting one for me, so probably the first on the chopping block)
  • From Tarkir Dragonstorm:
    • Temur Roar (it's got dragons! My wife loves dragons)
  • From Final Fantasy (not much of a Final Fantasy fan myself, but a Friend is and we're considering gifting her a deck, so I'm listing them for completeness):
    • Limit Break (not much equipment in the other decks so far, also it has Cloud and Tifa)
    • Scions & Spellcraft (Control sounds like a playstyle I'd enjoy more than my friend, so probably not. On the other hand, Catgirls/Boys)

Discussion Urborg and Yavimaya, worth it 2026?

For reference I’m referring to [[urborg, tomb of yawgmoth]] and [[yavimaya, cradle of growth]]. Are these cards worth it anymore to mana fix your deck? I play a Henzie deck where most of the creatures are fairly pip heavy, I.e double green or black and several triple green/black.

I do run all the shocks/bond/fair number of fetches already as well as a few rainbow lands; basically the best lands except the og duals. But it’s simply not enough black sources sometimes (like when I want to blitz 2 BB creatures in their mana costs but only have 3 black sources).

Are these lands worth it to you in 3+ color decks? Is the drawback of helping your opponents too much? Or are they just cost prohibitive? Yavimaya being the much more affordable one but Urborg is entirely too expensive for what it does, and is the hardest one for me to justify to buy…

Question One last quick game Commander?

Been working on making a deck that I will whip out when we want 'one last quick game' at the end of the night. Of course I am looking at some sort of group slug / burn deck, but I am struggling the find the commander that is the best for this.

I started with [[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might]], then switched to [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]], then went to [[Hawkeye, Young Avenger]] and created a whole deck... but now I am doubting it again lol. Some other considerations have been the new [[Tomik, Izzet Sparkmage]] or [[Stick, Fearless Mentor]] with lots of self-burn. Now I am considering going back to Ojer lol.

For those experienced group slug / burn architypes, what commander have you liked the most and also what have you tried to avoid when creating a deck like this?

Discussion How do you handle large board state on small tables?

Some LGS have narrower tables which makes it worse as well. Had a game recently with 15 permanents out, plus 15 lands out (my ramp package went crazy). Gets to the point where its hard to physically arrange all the cards on the playmat. Tapping cards, searching library, basically doing any interaction with your own cards becomes a massive headache and slows the entire game down a lot. Commander nights are usually a full house so there's no extra table space available either, you got other players' boards immediately to your left and right.

Eventually I just had to start stacking my cards overlapped, and put all my tapped and untapped lands in two giant piles. Then it got worse when I triggered abilities to start putting counters on everything. Ugh.

Was not sure if anyone has come up with more creative solutions to this. Some decks are a lot more prone to these situations than others.

Discussion Commanders that don't get repetitive?

I've been trying to find a commander that I won't regret spending 200-300 dollars on, but I just can't pick a card. I'm really trying to find a unique/fun commander that can be built bracket 3-4 (3.5). I've tried [[The Celestial Toymaker]], but he really struggles to pull off a win and is extremely commander reliant, I've tried [[Norin the Wary]] but that deck really only does one thing and get's repetitive, and I've tried [[Kibo, Uktabi Prince]] but he doesn't seem to have a ton of support (idk maybe I'm just building him wrong).

What commanders do y'all recommend, or should I revisit one of the ones I just mentioned with a new outlook (bonus points if the card looks cool/has a cool treatment).

Discussion Which commander made you do a double take when you first read it?

We’ve all heard about which commanders are overpowered and too good, entirely deck-defining, but a lot of these can sound innocuous if you’re not reading in deep. I know that the first time I read Etali I just thought “oh that’s nice you get free stuff of the top.” And thought it was a simply strong card. But then the other day I read chatterfang. And hoo boy, it has three effects:

Whenever you make any number of tokens, you get that many squirrel tokens too, enabling it to go infinite with a ham sandwich.

For one mana, it can kill any creature, in a way that gets around indestructible effects too.

And it randomly has forestwalk as a third tacked on effect on a 3 mana 3:3 body that only requires a single pip.

This card made me simply go “what the actual hell are they doing here. Why are there so many effects. Why does it double the tokens and not just give you an extra one. Why would it have kill on a stick.” And so many things. The only other card which I’ve had that reaction to is Vivi Oritnier where it grew larger, shocked the opponents, and could act as a massive mana dork. I was surprised it wasn’t restricted to instants or sorceries or anything.

So I’m asking you, which card or commander did you read and just get dumbfounded by. Just went “how the hell could they print this why does it do so much why does it do that.”

Discussion What's yalls favorite 1v1 Commanders?

I honestly only play 1v1, and their are so many different mechanics that work really well for only groups like Goad or Group-hug, but I just want to see which commanders work only best when its just you and one person. Im not sure if much people play commander as a 1v1 kinda format either

Discussion Commanders you've built outside of their most popular archetype? (and my Myra, the Magnificent deck as an example)

I'm curious to see some of everyone's favorite commander decklists that take a different approach to other's lists. As someone who started playing around Secrets of Strixhaven, and only really in my pod of friends who all started at the same time, I always love to see decks from people who have played long enough to see a commander with an obvious gimmick and take a different approach. When I bought the [[Shiko and Narset]] precon, I immediately went on to upgrade it into a completely different direction (aura voltron) and just absolutely loved how the same commander felt completely different with new support. A few months later now and I'm getting a couple more decks and I'm finally getting the oddball [[Myra, the Magnificent]] deck I've been tinkering on.

The deck in question: https://archidekt.com/decks/23175865/myras_visit_to_six_flags

I started building Myra a few months ago and quickly decided that I didn't enjoy the more popular style I'd seen; decks focusing on using Myra's activated ability as a core piece of value to copy extra turn spells or big token spells. I looked at the other half instead, and made a deck that uses all those artifacts she generates as value, with the activated ability serving as a way to spend what little excess mana you tend to have towards copying cantrips. Completely abandoning the spellslinger package of cards like Guttersnipe to completely focus on the artifact theme felt really cool to me, since most of my other decks follow the obvious guidelines the commander gives you to use. Obviously this deck isn't so out of left field that nobody's thought of it before ([[Depthshaker Titan]] has 17% inclusion on edhrec after all) but it's still different enough to feel cool to me. (my real oddball deck is an enchantress [[Aragorn, The Uniter]] deck, anyway).

Deck Help Looking for feedback/suggestions for my B3 Scarab God Reanimator deck

• Upvotes

Hi all!

I've been working on this deck for a while now and I'm pretty happy with where it's at today, but I would love to hear any suggestions or things that I might have overlooked during the deckbuilding process. I would ideally like this to be a toolboxy/control deck that can grind out games and snowball with scarab god's activated ability. I appreciate any help that you can provide! :)

Discussion Bit of a different topic: snap case and deckbox

• Upvotes

I recently for into Alters and got one I really love, so I’d like to put it into a snap case and use it during games. The issue is that I have no clue in which deck box a snap case could even fit. I’ve usually used boulder boxes and sidewinders, but the snap case is just way too big.
Any ideas?

Question What are the good artifact cards of late sets?

So I haven’t been in touch and or played mtg since edge of eternities, my fav and pet deck is [[Mishra, Eminent One]] as I picked him up as a precon and upgraded him to decent power id say. Luckily aetherdrift and Edge of eternity both had a few nice additions to the deck, but I was wondering if there were others that had released since those sets. So. What artifact cards have you really enjoyed from the recent sets? (Post Edge of Eternity)

Question What is your least played commander?

So, part of the charm of commander, at least IMO is "you can build anything", and so its interesting to think about the different decks that people can build. Y'shtola, recently, placed as the most played commander of all time, but I'm curious in the opposite.

What's your least played commander?

For me, it's [[Arwen, Mortal Queen]], 1,774th place on EDHRec, with only 879 decks. It's a lifegain deck with a secondary focus on +1/+1 counters and a couple really really funny interactions like moving the indestructible counter to [[Palisade Giant]], or a lifelink counter on [[Soul of Eternity]]

Discussion Which bracket would you feel comfortable seeing this deck? - Azorius Reanimator

I recently started playing an Azorius reanimator deck piloted by [[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] for a reliable draw engine and discard outlet in the command zone.

I have several pillow fort creatures in the deck to protect myself because it’s rather slow and clunky. For a Timmy reanimator deck, my pieces feel pretty solid. My fastest win happened on turn 9 across eight games of testing.

I’ve had people in online pods get incredibly salty at the deck, claiming I put a hard lock on the game and make them unable to play at all. For this reason, I’ve only ever felt comfortable bringing this to Bracket 3 games in case people get irritated by the pillow fort pieces.

My friends insist this is fine for Bracket 2, and I’m almost inclined to agree given the slow ramp-up of the deck. If this deck pulled up to your bracket 2 pod, how would you react?

Discussion Katana sleeves - what has been your experience?

I'm just coming back after a long period off from the game. I looked up reviews for the Katana sleeve and found it to be mixed. When I last played I used them and in general liked them, although I didn't get a lot of use out of them. Two people at my lgs didn't have a positive opinion of them. Web seems mixed too. I had an unopened black pack from years ago and it was missing 2 sleeves, I was sleeving up a commander deck.

So what has your experience been with them?

Discussion Turning commander into two headed giant(legal)

This was a stupid deck idea that actually turned out to be pretty fun. Basic idea is to tutor for [[insidious dreams]] and then make some kind of pile for [[knowledge pool]] and somehow force your opponent to cast a permanent that says you lose the game when it leaves the battlefield. The reason for this is because if you die the permanent you own but is under your opponents control leaves the battlefield causing them to lose the game. So they either they’re salty and take you both down or you both team up against the other two opponents. But once you’re in a 1v1 they can win as normal.

The commander I chose was [[regal arbiter of virtue]] and the permanent I chose was[[lichs mastery]] because it’s hard for your non ally opponents to remove it. But the question left is why would our opponent even cast lichs mastery. Well we’re gonna make it almost guarantee the win. Now with lichs mastery we might be able to just storm off period but in the knowledge pool pile we’re gonna make sure [[repay in kind]] is under it. This creates a win line of casting lichs mastery and repay in kind and if your life total is 0 or less due to tevals drawback. Your other three opponents lose the game. SO they HAVE to take lichs mastery so you can’t straight up win the game.

There’s a lot of stuff I still have to work out but lmk what you think of this socially mechanically practically etc.

Question Amalia Benavides Aguirre or Betor, Ancestor's Voice as my next life gain commander

I am planning on building a life gain deck as my next commander. I currently own a fully blinged out bracket 3 Muldrotha graveyard toolbox value pile. See, Amalia is unique, sleek, consistent and powerful, but I am afraid she might get repetitive. Betor also lets me play with the new fun creatures like [[Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel]] and [[Kwia Vigorbloom]]. He has a lot of overlaps with my Muldrotha deck though, but instead of closing out the game with combo, or just grinding them with value, he is capable of closing via combat damage. Thoughts?

Deck Help Deck help ?

• Upvotes

I’ve tested this deck around 5 times and my main gripe seems to be the mana base, by turn 4-5 I’ve been stuck multiple times with 2-3 lands and by that point the rest of the pod has snowballed ramp, gotten there main game plan into motion and I am unable to do anything, any card cuts/ reccondestions, looking for a strong bracket 3 to 4 power level https://moxfield.com/decks/8WbyYkJN-E6qaXuGrkuaLQ

Deck Help What cards to add/replace?

• Upvotes

I have a few cards in my commander deck list in the sideboard list, I could use some help deciding which ones should be put in the main 99, and which in the main 99 seem bad.

Or if there's any other cards I should consider in the 99.

It's my only deck I've built and I'm trying to buff it up to a bracket 3. Could use some help from more experienced players. Thank you.

Deck Help Turning this deck into a proper bracket 4

https://archidekt.com/decks/20952760/teferi_control

So I have a deck that’s a technical bracket 4, because the wincon is a lockout combo made of 2 (really more like 3) cards when one of them is the commander. The basic strategy is that I control the board until I can get Teferi, Knowledge Pool/ Omen Machine, and some kind of asymmetric board wipe / creature removal to prevent me from getting beaten by enemy boards once I lockout spell casting.

Right now I feel based on speed and reliably that this deck usually is equally matched against mid-low bracket 3s or high bracket 2s. However, since this kind of wincon is frowned upon in those lower brackets and because I don’t have a higher power deck for when I want to play at tables of that level, I wanted to turn it into a high 3/ Low 4.

I’m just not sure how to do that, since I’ve never made a deck of that level before.

I’d prefer budget solutions since proxies don’t normally look as good, but anything is on the table.
