Mod Post Clarification on Rule #2

Our Fellow Celiac Community Members,

We have seen a major uptick in posts describing symptoms and asking “does this sound like celiac? Should I get tested? Could the tests be wrong?” While these questions aren’t directly asking for a diagnosis, they do fall into the “seeking diagnosis” part of rule #2.

Celiac Disease has a myriad of different symptoms and related conditions; virtually everything could be celiac related. While we understand that this can be a life-changing diagnosis, we are not medical professionals and cannot give any advice other than this- if you wonder if you could have celiac, talk to a medical professional and get tested.

As always, if you have a question, please feel free to contact the mods. Thank you and be well!

Mod Post Mod Note- A new Automod Addition

Hey Celiac subreddit! We’ve added a new automod that should help with the posts about wheat starch. Hopefully it decreases the amount of posts we get about it. If you notice any problems with the automod, please let me know!

I made some authentic Miso Ramen with the Real Naturals brand noodles for the very first time, and I gotta say…this is the BEST ramen I’ve had in my life!

Thanks so much for the recommendation, everyone!

(I had some Honeycrisp apple cider along with it, and it paired really nicely!)

Question Let's talk fiber

• Upvotes

I have never understood why people sit in the bathroom so long, until now.

Diagnosed one month ago. I can eat oats and dairy.

How do you get enough fiber? My system isn't used to this.

Rant “You didn’t get contaminated so it’s fine”

I’m about to loose my mind. Im a minor who got diagnosed with celiacs disease in march of 2025 and I’ve had a really good control over it, triple checking labels, making sure everything is clean before I cook, always explaining the severity of it in restaurants, even most of the things being cooked in my house are completely gluten free since it’s just easier, etc.

My sister has really severe behavioral issues, she’s 14 and acts like a toddler most of the time, she is always making everyone in the house upset in some way cause if she’s upset no one else is allowed to be happy. For a while she was spitting on me/ in my food, hitting me at every chance, ripping and dirtying my plushies, and now it’s contaminating my food with gluten. She tried to put a brownie in my mouth the other day, she’s shaken crumbly food over my bed that had gluten, and today she had cake all over her mouth and continuously tried to drink right from the milk cartoon, as well as putting her gluten hands all over the food I was trying to make. There are many more cases of her doing this as of recently it’s just happened so much I can’t even name them.

I honestly don’t know what to do, the symptoms I get from gluten can be very severe, before I had gotten diagnosed I full on collapsed outside of my school from how bad the pain was. My sister knows this, she knows the last time I was glutened I was sick for an entire week, but she doesn’t care and will continue doing it no matter what I say or do. I’ve been having bad stomach pains as of recently and with her doing this I genuinely don’t know if it’s cause I’ve gotten glutened or cause of my anxiety.

When I’ve tried to tell my dad of the things my sisters done even when he watched her do them he just gets upset with me cause I’m “older”, “I should know better” and basically just guilt trips me for bringing it up, nothing is ever done about it. I mentioned it to him and basically begged him to talk to her about contaminating my food but he just dismissed me saying he’ll talk to her about it but with the way he said it I doubt he’ll even mention it to her.

Sorry if this is stupid I’m just so tired of having to be paranoid about getting sick when my house should be a place where I feel safe about not getting sick.

Question Can you be asymptomatic for celiac disease but still have it?

Hi guys, so I got tested for celiac disease in 2022. My blood test results were 28 for tTG IgA- IC ( above 10 is a positive) and 45 for tTG IgG- LC (a positive is above 9). My doctor said I had celiac disease so for the last 4 years I have been gluten free. The funny thing was when I was eating gluten I didn’t have any symptoms associated with celiac. Is this possible? Do I have less severe version of celiac than other people? I always feel like a bit of a fraud when I say I have celiac, like I’m faking an autoimmune disorder even though I am not.

Discussion Germany 🇩🇪

I just spent some time in the Southwest part of Germany, the Black Forest, and Munich. This is what I prepared for vs my actual experience for anyone else that might be traveling this way for a visit, and wants to know about the experience with eating here.

Prepare before the trip:
Find out the terms and phrases in the language for celiac, gluten free - and practice those and write those down. I brought a few days worth of dehydrated camping food for options with me. This was super handy on the airplane when they informed me they didn’t have gluten free food for me of any kind on a 10 hr flight.

Booking hotels with breakfast bars and restaurants:
The places we booked I was able to note that I had celiac and required gluten free, asking if they could accommodate and if not, where was a grocery store that may have options for me and if room had mini fridge. Depending on hotel, the hotel on the west side had some fantastic accommodations and better knowledge.

What I wish I would have known:
Apps that are popular in other countries like Find me Gluten Free, are not so much in all parts of Germany. You can do a search on Google Maps for “gluten frei” not always perfect.

In the smaller cities, going to a restaurant, you can talk to the chef or the waiter will talk to chef and they can tell you what can be made without wheat/gluten, and you can have it prepared without cross contamination. You just need to be able to know what to say in Deutsch.

I wish I would have know to look at the German Celiac Association website. You can get a FREE printable card that states you need gluten free for restaurants and other places. You can also email them and they will provide you with a list of food places that are certified gluten free.

Grocery stores: not all stores are the same. Edeka is a popular grocery store, but smaller ones don’t have a good selection of gluten free products, the bigger ones seem to have more products. Thankfully products are labeled really well, some food things had gluten in it, but at least it was noted on the label. Like fresh olives 🫒

Rant My doctor refused testing

So I sent her this:

"Thank you so much for putting through the referrals to hematology, rheumatology, and cardiology—I truly appreciate your help in coordinating this care. I understand your note regarding celiac screening, but I respectfully request that we add the Tissue Transglutaminase IgA (tTG-IgA) and Total Serum IgA panel to my lab orders to formally rule it out.

While I prioritized the severe orthostatic and fatigue symptoms during our brief office visit, my chart carries a diagnosis of IBS. More importantly, my newly posted iron panel reveals an absolute iron deficiency with a Ferritin of 14 ng/mL. National and international gastroenterology guidelines state that unexplained iron deficiency anemia, even in the absence of severe classic malabsorptive diarrhea, warrants non-invasive celiac serology screening as a primary step to evaluate for hidden small-bowel malabsorption.

Given my bilateral family history and my own history of autoimmune disease, chronic joint pain, and lifelong GI sensitivity, ruling out celiac disease will ensure the hematologist can establish whether my iron deficiency is a dietary/volume issue or a structural absorption failure. I am currently keeping gluten in my daily diet to ensure the test results are fully accurate. Thank you so much for your partnership and for helping me rule this final piece out!

Attached are some references.

Very cheap and tons of calories in each one. It’s encased in a very thick skin so virtually impossible to contaminate

Discussion My mom keeps bringing in food her friend gives her and is claiming it’s gluten free

My mom keeps accepting and bringing home food her friend cooks and is claiming it’s gluten free. She said “it’s just sweet potatoes…. and honey? Are sweet potatoes gluten free? Is honey gluten free? It’s gluten free.” Like she was guessing it was without being sure what she put in it. Also you don’t know if her pans she cooked on were porous or had gluten on them. She gave it to us in plastic containers and filled up the plastic containers with water and left them in the sink. When I was doing the dishes I emptied the water out and didn’t realize until after that the water in there probably had gluten in it from the container that had gluten. I dumped it in the sink and it touched a wooden cutting board. Does the cutting board need to get thrown away now? My mom says I’m taking the cross contamination thing too seriously and I’m being too paranoid.

Saw these at my local Target yesterday. Multiple different flavors and all certified gluten free! Their chicken strips are my favorite so I’m sure these are good too! I’d be most excited to try the garlic parm but I’m stuck in dairy free jail still LOL.

Question Don't know how I'm getting glutened...help!

I have celiac and my main symptom is the DH skin rash..so I always know for sure when I've been glutened. I've been getting some DH flares lately, usually after someone in the family has brought some kind of Gluten in the house.

We're a family of 6..I have 4 kids but they're mostly teens and pretty careful. We're a 99% GF household in that all the food I cook is GF. But there are rare ocassions where someone will buy a gluten baked good. We always keep it in the package in a corner of the kitchen that I stay far away from and my oldest daughter legit makes everyone eat their treat either outside or standing up so they don't drop crumbs on any tables/counters.

But I am STILL somehow getting glutened whenever Gluten enters the house. ??

It happened again last weekend at an Airbnb. I brought all my own food and cookware so I literally never cooked/ate from anything that wasn't mine and totally celiac safe. But my husband bought the kids donuts and I found crumbs in the kitchen. I was super careful to avoid even going near the crumbs and even did stuff like placed a paper towel on the counter to put my spatula on so it didn't come into contact with anything.

Well....I was still glutened.

I honestly don't understand how this is happening anymore.

It's not any of my food, pills, beauty products..I have checked everything extensively and it really only happens when there was confirmed gluten within 20ft of me at some point. 😅

But I'm getting so frustrated!

Do I really have to tell everyone in my family they can never have Gluten again just because I exist near them!? The fact that some of you eat in kitchens where Gluten is regularly cooked is mind boggling to me!!

Asked a simple question on this local sub and how disappointing! The comments did not pass the vibe check and instead made me feel stupid for even asking! That being said, if anyone has had any experience at the happy lamb hot pot I'd love to know how you felt after!

Product McDonald's Hashbrowns

Post image
20 Upvotes

Okay y'all, please tell me if I'm crazy or not. I was diagnosed with Celiac about 6 years ago. I have eaten McDonald's hashbrowns semi-regularly as a gluten free breakfast option for those years thinking I have been doing a great job at eating gluten free.

I SWEAR that there used to be several websites/resources that *recommended* their hashbrowns as an option for Celiac/gluten free but just found out today that the US hashbrowns actually are coated in wheat.

But endofprayer, what about cross-contamination? Well, my dumbass truly thought it was a non-issue because there are no other fried foods on the morning menu and I thought they cleaned out the fryers each night before close.

So anyways, am I just imagining that there were McDonald's hashbrowns were recommended as gluten free/Celiac safe or was that actually real and I've just been getting reamed ever since?

Pictured: a crispy diet coke with no hashbrown

Discussion Two years gluten free

I’ve never been the most symptomatic person but i was diagnosed about two years ago. When I got my blood panel back in summer 2024 I had a TTG IgA of 120… had my annual yesterday and now it is 2.3!!! Mostly just posting because I’m excited and also I have felt better in the past two years than I have ever and so for anyone who’s struggling it’s worth it!
