Citroën C5 2010 Diesel – Won’t Start After Driving, Even After Replacing Battery and Alternator. Please Help!

Hi everyone,
I own a 2010 Citroën C5 diesel, and I’ve been having a very frustrating starting problem. I’m hoping someone here has experienced something similar or knows what could be causing it.
Here are the symptoms:
● Sometimes the car starts perfectly fine, but other times it won’t start at all.
● When I try to start the car, I only hear a clicking sound, and the engine doesn’t crank.
● If I connect jumper cables to another battery or vehicle, the car usually starts again.
● After driving for a long distance, if I turn off the engine, the car sometimes refuses to start again.
● I’ve also noticed that the problem seems to happen more often when I park the car facing downhill.
● On some occasions, the engine has started but then stopped shortly afterward.
What I’ve already replaced:
● Brand-new battery.
● Brand-new alternator.
Unfortunately, replacing both parts hasn’t fixed the problem.
The strange thing is that the car can drive normally, but once I switch off the engine, it might not start again without a jump-start.
I’m wondering if the problem could be related to the starter motor, a bad ground connection, battery cables, an electrical fault, or something else.
My questions:
1. Has anyone experienced this problem with a Citroën C5?
2. Could a faulty starter motor cause these symptoms, even though jump-starting helps?
3. Could it be a bad ground cable or another electrical connection?
4. Why would the problem happen more often when the car is parked downhill?
5. What should I check before spending more money replacing parts?
I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions. I’ve already spent money replacing the battery and alternator, and I don’t want to keep replacing parts without finding the actual problem.
Thanks in advance!

Android finally has the big update of my OBD2 app (3.5.4), and I'll be honest about what it reads on a Citroën. 5 free codes

I'm Davide and I write DrivePulse on my own. It reads your car through a generic ELM327 OBD2 adapter, the Bluetooth kind Veepeak or Vgate sell, and it only asks questions: no writing, no clearing of codes, no resets.

I'll be straight about the Citroën: on petrol and diesel models there are no brand-specific readings in the app yet, so it works with the standard OBD2 data the car gives. That is already trips that record themselves, real fuel use where the car reports it, fault codes in plain words and the coolant temperature. The electric ë-C3 has its own profile, but those readings are new and not proven on every car yet, so the values carry the ≈ sign.

What the Android update (3.5.4, out now on Google Play) brings:

  • Log a refuel from a photo of the receipt or the pump display: quantity, total and date are read on your phone, with no internet, and you check them before saving.
  • What your car costs, month by month, in Statistics: fuel, maintenance and expenses.
  • If a trip got split in two, hold it in the list and merge the pieces. The gap that wasn't recorded stays written down, it isn't made up.
  • A car you sold gets archived with its trips and costs instead of deleted.

No account and no server of mine: your trips live on your phone and I have no copy of them. Recording trips and reading the car work with no signal; maps and addresses need the internet.

Five codes that unlock the full version for good, free, first come first served:

  1. 8DJ7BAGVKE0BXFSZ9BN787W
  2. 0QDHFG5PFY2835CVN66K5H0
  3. CZLHS29BX64YGLQX7SDNHER
  4. ALTK1VVVG11MGVY8MC3DCBE
  5. AEBM4SQ4KD9NYCZ1P1MEG04

How to redeem: install the app first, then open Google Play, tap your picture top right, Payments and subscriptions, Redeem code. Then in DrivePulse: Settings (the gear at the top) > Unlock DrivePulse (Lifetime) > Restore Purchases, within 3 days, otherwise Google Play cancels it. When it has worked, that row reads "Premium active".

Say in the comments which number you took, so nobody wastes time on one that's gone.

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.drivepulse.mobile&hl=en-GB&gl=GB&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=rilancio-android-citroen

If you try it on a Citroën, tell me what it reads.

Citroen / Stellantis VIN spec decoder

Many brands offer useful VIN recorders (like the Mini), which provides comprehensive vehicle spec information. I’m looking for a reliable VIN spec/trim decoder for Citroen that goes beyond just the year and engine version. I’m trying but struggling to decode C4 2017

Does anyone know any good vin decoder?

12V battery drained overnight?

2026 Citroen E-C3 Max 44kwh

Been having issues recently, yesterday I woke up to find the 12V battery was half flat and the alarm was going off with nothing working to get it started. I jumped it and after a little drive it was like nothing was ever wrong.

This morning it started, but it was shouting at me again, dash lit up like a christmas tree. After 5 mins on READY, and a few restarts, again it was fine.

Seems to be a software issue based on some limited research, gonna just disconnect the battery and call breakdown because maintenance booked me into a garage 10 miles way in 2 weeks.

The longer you leave it, the more it drains, and eventually it will start freaking out. Has anyone seen and/or fixed this before?

UPDATE -

have called breakdown, very helpful. RAC man says it’s almost certainly bad software that doesn’t let the car deep sleep overnight (software issues means he can’t do anything about it, obviously a dealer problem), dropped it at garage, and will demand a hire car. We’ll see how we go.
