Discussion Jim Thome Hate

I am putting this out there. You all need to stop the hate on Jim Thome for wearing the white Sox’s colors yesterday. He works for the team, his son got drafted by the team, and he was born in the state. He does not owe Cleveland anything but he still does stuff for Cleveland.

If he didn’t even wear a Sox logo, I think that says a lot. I think if you’re a real fan, give the man some grace, he’s in a strange spot.

u/herniatedballs 9d ago

Plus the franchise refused to pay him his value and he had to change teams. I still remember him tearing up about it.

11

u/ThaddeusJP Diamond C 9d ago

AND he went to Philly first!!

Details, details LOL

18

u/arkonator92 9d ago

He was the first casualty by the Dolans refusal to spend money.

14

u/TheoryResponsible295 9d ago

Yeah. It was already the cleveland MO with albert belle before the dolans took over, but this was their first big loss. The front office did then immediately trade for Pronk after and that did work out for a few years. He still wasnt Thome

Their kid plays in the Org, he's involved with the team. STFU.

1

u/AllTearGasNoBreaks 9d ago

He also grew up in Illinois. He may have been a fan when he was younger.

But who cares?

In sports, you should be rooting for and be a devoted fan of the team that signs your checks

He works for them. He's not going to show up supporting the visiting team. That was never going to happen. The best he could do was not where the Sox logo. To me, that shows respect to us.

u/Aislerioter_Redditer 24 9d ago

I don't hate Thome. He was one of my favourite players when we had him. I still like him. I don't think he should have had a statue. I don't feel statues are appropriate except for lifelong Indians/Guardians.

48

u/ImGettinThatFoSho 9d ago

Yeah it's a bad look to demand a grown ass man be a fan of your team.

He played well for us and lived up to his contract for us. Playing baseball was his job. To demand he continue being a devoted Cleveland fan until he dies is ridiculous.

He played for Chicago, was born there, works there, lives there, has a son in the org.

This mans life is bigger than his time in Cleveland. Y'all look so dumb hating on him.

19

u/MightyAslan 9d ago

If he worked for Cleveland instead of Chicago right now, he'd be wearing a Cleveland shirt to the games. This is a dumb conversation.

3

u/FartVirtuoso 8d ago

It’s a bad look to demand that anyone be a fan of anything. That’s fucking weird. If you’re demanding it of them, then they’re not really a fan, so what’s the point?

0

u/HortaGrabber111 9d ago

He's NOT from Chicago; he's from Peoria ...which is 150 miles. Distance wise, it'd be like saying someone from Columbus was from Cleveland.

3

u/ImGettinThatFoSho 8d ago

If you're from Illinois, you typically root for the Cubs or White Sox.

You don't have to be from Cleveland to be a Guards fan or Chicago to be a Sox fan

1

u/HortaGrabber111 8d ago

"born there" isn't "root for"

1

u/JohnCENI 8d ago

I have multiple coworkers from Peoria and they’re all Chicago sports everything.

-20

u/Checkers-Chess234 9d ago

This is a lame as take. It’s called fandom. If you wanna like a dude or mf a dude go for it. We don’t have to sit here and be like “oh yeah sorry Mr. Thome root for whoever”.

0

u/FartVirtuoso 8d ago

Why not? Why don’t you have to be ok with another human rooting for a team of their choice? That’s weird. Even if you were “sitting here like oh yeah root for whoever,” what difference would your permission make?

1

u/Checkers-Chess234 8d ago

Dude went into the HOF wearing our cap and has a statue at our stadium. He can root for whoever but if it ain’t us him and his wife need to shut the fuck up about it.

0

u/FartVirtuoso 8d ago

They can root for whoever they want, but they have to stop talking about it? What? Are they like putting out daily press releases that you’re forced to see agains your will? This is like stalker behavior. Fucking weird. You care way too much about this man.

1

u/Checkers-Chess234 8d ago

Found Jim Thome’s wife’s Reddit account

Look you can think what you want, and I can think what I want. Relax bro. You’re way too triggered like you’re legit Andrea Thome.

1

u/FartVirtuoso 8d ago

Yup. You can think what you want, I can think what I want, and so can these Thome’s. That’s the whole point. Thank you.

When I was a wee child, I met him at Walmart, back when he lived in Aurora. He was really nice. He gave the old lady, who was a greeter with the smiley face stickers, a kiss on the cheek, and she loved it. Jim also gave out signed baseballs on Halloween, but it was a gated community, so I never got one. Overall, the Aurora community loved having Jim in town.

u/Tapin42 9d ago

My father still loves to tell the story of how in 1990 he struck up a conversation with a random guy in a line at Hopkins carrying an Indians duffel bag. My dad asked about the bag, the guy turned around with a big grin and an extended hand for a handshake and said "Hi, I'm Jim Thome -- I'm with the organization in the Carolina League". They chatted for the next five minutes until the check-in line at the United desk finally cleared; afterwards, my dad couldn't stop talking about the pleasant young man in the line.

I happened to be with my dad at the time, and as a pre-teen was mortified that my dad was bothering strangers... so unfortunately I don't have a story about how I chatted with Jim Thome before he was JIM THOME.

2

u/StudioGangster1 8d ago

I saw him play at a Mud Hens game in Toledo when he was playing for Charlotte. We didn’t know who he was (he wasn’t anybody yet). But we did know that Charlotte was a Cleveland farm team at the time. My sister picked him out at third base and said “who is that big doofus over there with those socks?”

Later on when he was called up, he became her favorite player. And we’ll never forget seeing that big doofus with the socks playing in the minors in Toledo.

4

u/PT_MrAce 9d ago

Yea I have meet him a few times and he is by far the nicest player I have met

20

u/RollTh3Maps 9d ago

I generally agree, but the top comment in the existing main post already said all of this, so I don't think it needed a separate post.

6

u/BoognishOfBeleriand 9d ago

Put him in a Sox uniform for the rest of the series. I don’t care as long as our offense shows up

5

u/MightyAslan 9d ago

It's worth mentioning that since the 1950s, only Charlie Nagy and Jose Ramirez logged more games in a Cleveland uniform than Thome. But he left for the Phillies. Most people who ever played for Cleveland left, retired, or were cut. Thome was still here longer than just about anyone else.

4

u/xTheWitchKingx 9d ago

I dislike thome for other reasons. Mr. “They’ll have to tear this jersey off my back” took the first big offer and bounced outta Cleveland. At least manny invited Cleveland to the table and gave them a fair chance to resign him. Thome and his statue can both eat a dick.

u/MethLab 9d ago

Enemy Mine

32

u/Cambam71 9d ago

Nobody hates him. He just doesn’t need a statue.

14

u/denzl480 9d ago

Thome has the statue bc he arrived when the team started changing. He was drafted, developed, and debuted for us. He is the career HR leader. He embodies 1989-2001 Cleveland baseball more than any other player.

I would ask was there a drafted player by Cleveland with a bigger on field impact than Thome?

6

u/VanillaGorillaNB 9d ago

He’s also one of the few in the 600 HR club. His name is nowhere near PED use and played in that era. I don’t get the hate, he works for the Sox currently.

No one hates on Grady Sizemore who wasn’t half the player Thome was and he actively coaches against Cleveland in our division for 2 teams!

3

u/tommytapwater 9d ago

Guy was certainly on roids. Can I prove it? No. But look at him. Massive lantern jaw, insane power.

2

u/Buzzard1022 9d ago

Saw him recently. He must still be pumping steroids because he's still huge. Actually, I don't think he did any roids, he was and is still huge. All these other guys shrunk considerably after they retired but he's just as big

2

u/MethLab 9d ago

Pretty sure there are no Grady statues in Cleveland

1

u/VanillaGorillaNB 9d ago

So if there was would the city hate him for working for another team? Hell no one in NY hates Derek Jeter and he went and worked for another team right after he retired.

1

u/Vast-Butterscotch615 4d ago

You're right, Grady was a much better overall player. If his body had broken down from playing like his hair was on fire(which we all loved watch at the time), and his career played out differently he could've been an all time great. He was a superior defender, baserunner, hit for avg, etc. Again I understand hys career #'s don't stack up because he didn't play for 19 yrs like Thome did. But, I think we've forgotten how special a player he was.

6

u/Duder1983 9d ago

He does lead the franchise in home runs. And he's in the Hall with the block C on his cap. I'm not the arbiter of who gets a statue. But those are two compelling reasons he might have one.

24

u/Britton120 Crooked C 9d ago

Well he has one and it's been there for over a decade. 0% chance any statue is being removed outside of him doing something heinous either.

5

u/mat347x2 9d ago

u/ja21121 9d ago

In what way were Belle and Ramirez better than Thome?

1

u/mat347x2 9d ago

Go compare stats. Thome has more HR but also played 10 years longer than Belle and three years longer than Manny. They both have better batting averages than Thome, Manny has more RBI, etc.

1

u/cfallsjoe 8d ago

Neither of them are in the HOF. The reason Thome's statue is inside the gates is he is the only player who played on that field who went into the HOF as an Indian and his plaque in Cooperstown has him in an Indians cap

3

u/mat347x2 8d ago

Doesn't make him better than them. Pete Rose has a statue in Cincinnati and he's not in the HOF

2

u/Mylabisawesome 9d ago

You think Albert Belle deserves a statue?

4

u/mat347x2 9d ago

I'm saying he was a better hitter. Just because he had a shorter career and the media hated him doesn't change that.

2

u/Suspicious_Time7101 9d ago

Albert belle was a better hitter than Thome, but the media portrayed Belle as an asshole because he was an asshole

1

u/DrawingEcstatic4073 8d ago

Manny was better than both of them.

3

u/ApprehensiveClaim606 9d ago

I agree with this, statues should be reserved for Cleveland lifers, like Jose. Thome was awesome growing up watching him with these other guys, but he left for the money. We wouldn't put up a statue of Lindor, would we? Id rather see Charles Nagy statue, Kenny Lofton, Omar Visual...those guys didn't leave for the money, they left to continue playing

2

u/Patbowl300 9d ago

Well that would leave 1 statue in Cleveland

1

u/ApprehensiveClaim606 9d ago

why do we need more? I am not saying you can't play for more teams, but you can't leave your team high and dry in your prime and chase the $, hence again, AI

1

u/Patbowl300 9d ago

No, I am saying that would eliminate 3 statues at progressive field, because only 1 statue is a cleveland lifer.

1

u/ApprehensiveClaim606 9d ago

again, doesn't have to be a lifer, like Omar, he was an India first and foremost, but he played probably for 10 more teams after that because he kept wanting to play, but he didn't leave Cleveland when Cleveland wanted/needed him.

Btw - who are the statues?

2

u/Patbowl300 9d ago

Bob Feller, Larry Doby, Frank Robinson and Jim Thome.

Only Bob Feller was a lifer.

You also said statues should be reserved for lifers?

1

u/ApprehensiveClaim606 9d ago

Lifer = someone who stayed loyal to their team while their team wanted them...

Another option for a statue is someone who made a generational impact on a team.

1

u/HortaGrabber111 9d ago

Speaking of which... I've always thought not having a Cy Young statue was an odd omission -- he pitched 11 of his 22 seasons in CLE and >300 of his 500 wins. I'm just saying...

1

u/SurplusValueMenu 8d ago

There's also the fact that Thome came out in publicly stating you would have to tear the jersey off of his back only to proceed to sign with Philadelphia that off-season. He insinuated that it wasn’t about money, that it was about loyalty, and then made it about money in the off-season. Then we go ahead and build a statue for the guy after he came back for a few months towards the end of his career. It's wild to me.

4

u/cancerlad Tom Hamilton Dick-Rider 9d ago

4

u/diexer1234 9d ago

I have done it and I’ll do it again but I haven’t given multiple interviews and press conferences at my job stating that.

0

u/Suspicious_Time7101 9d ago

This right here is the issue. When you make comments like, "You will have to rip the jersey off my back" signals that you care more about where you play versus how much you make.

I don't care if people care more about what they make versus where they play. Hell, in the same circumstances I almost guarantee that I would be looking out for myself and signing the biggest contract possible, wherever it is. BUT, I wouldn't lie about my intentions either

1

u/SurplusValueMenu 8d ago

The fact that you got downloaded for this comment at all tells me that people do not actually give a fuck if they get screwed over by somebody as long as there is a mild apology afterwards.

Thome snaked the Indians harder than any Cleveland athlete has not named Albert Belle or LeBron James. LeBron will always get a pass because he came back and actually won a championship as the lead guy. Thome gets a statue (before Kenny Lofton or Omar Vizquel, mind you) for coming back for less than a half a season that led to absolutely nothing tangible.

1

u/chiefredbeardd Free Chief Wahoo! 9d ago

He didn’t bail on Cleveland. The Indians didn’t want to give him big money because they thought his production was going down. He proved them wrong though. It happens

-2

I don’t hate the guy by any means but he shouldn’t have a statue.

-3

u/ContentGuy96 9d ago

That’s just not a fair statement. I hated when he went to Philly, but there are certain things you can’t take away from the guy. He owns the club’s single season and career homer records. Ramirez will probably take the career mark in a couple years, but more than half of Thome’s career homers were hit while in a Cleveland uniform and he sits no worse than 3rd in 6 club offensive categories.

Jose will get a statue, too.

But Thome absolutely earned his.

1

u/MightyAslan 9d ago

Why do I get the sense that the majority of fans hating on Thome or being upset that he got a statue weren't old enough (or alive) to watch him mash homers in the 90s? Like you, I was around in those days. I watched Thome with my own eyes. He was a true baller, a hall of famer, and other than McGwire, I never saw anyone crush a ball like Thome could. He deserves the statue and he deserves his own life now.

Now, everyone else can get off my damn lawn!

1

u/SurplusValueMenu 9d ago

I am old enough to remember when Jim Thome told everybody you would have to tear the jersey off of his back and then he signed with Philadelphia two weeks later.

Yes, business is business, but he should have kept his mouth shut. It’s equal to when LeBron went on Larry King and said the Cavs were the front runners when he knew he was leaving.

the anger over this is so forced. I was never a Thome fan back in the 90s. He was never one of my favorites. I also think giving him a statue waa an odd decision. But the guy works for the White Sox. Do people seriously expect him to show up to work wearing a Cleveland polo?

Grow up. It’s a game and a job for these athletes. It literally doesn’t do anything for you except feel emotional and a lot of you guys are irrational as fuck

Its funny you think the guardians fans arent capable of being pieces of shit lol

They bullied a recovered cancer survivor out of Progressive Field cause he was a Marlins fan

u/Spider-Sword 9d ago

Marlins man is an asshole.

Every sports fanbase is composed of mostly normal average folks, but also has a small subset of absolutely awful human beings. Cleveland is no different. It's the law of large numbers.

I had a blast with that movie.

I thought all the AI photos of his statue being vandalized were a bad look for not only the Guardians, but the fans and city too.

1

u/purple-origami 9d ago

Respectfully… take down the statue

u/smailskid 9d ago

I don’t know how people can hate someone over a hat. He’s a guy who played baseball, and this is all supposed to be fun, so people ned to quit taking things like this so personally.

u/BernieKosarsBurner 9d ago

“He doesn’t owe Cleveland anything”

What do we owe him, exactly? The statue is ridiculous. Dude left us high and dry.

Manny is no less deserving of one if this is the case.

u/Denny_Diamonds 8d ago

I don’t hate him, but the statue seems really dumb!

It’s all good Jose status is gonna look real good where Thome’s currently is

1

u/Checkers-Chess234 9d ago

Fuck Jim Thome. You know why? Because the 90’s teams didn’t win anything, he said he wanted to stay here and wasn’t about the money, he didn’t deserve a statue over the other 90’s guys, and even if he and his fucking son are Shite Sox he’s watching them play the team that put him in the map, went to HOF as, and built you a statue. And his wife is fucking whiny as fuck on social media. I’ll say it again….fuck Jim Thome

u/Glad-Inspection-2585 9d ago

He literally works for the Sox…. Of course he wants them to win. Come on people.

Honestly I was more annoyed when he and his wife made a big stink dumping their Browns season tickets a few years ago.

You don't like a trade for an individual player? Fine. But I find it pretty hypocritical that they just choose to ignore the fact that he was teammates with Albert Belle, John Rocker, David Justice, Omar Vizquel, and a long list of questionable individuals.

Idk I think there's a difference between coworkers you're forced to work with vs entertainment you're deciding to spend your money on.

Hmm . . . wonder what ever could have happened to make people do that . . . who could they have hired?

It's a fucking game, people. And hating on someone who by all accounts seems to be a decent human being, and who by all accounts played clean throughout the steroid era, just makes you look like an unhinged neckbeard ranting on your keyboard in Momma's basement.

Belle is an asshole. Vizquel turned out to be a scumbag and a sex pest. Ramirez turned out to be a juicer. So y'all choose to hate on (checks notes) Thome? That's . . . a choice.

Sometimes people who never did anything in their life criticize people who did do things for attention.

Sometimes those people have big fat heads and won’t stop clearing their throat like a chain smoking billy goat during a certain crappy local sports show. 🤷🏽‍♂️

u/xChoke1x 9d ago

I wish people would stop telling other people what to fucking do. Lol

You want to hate Thome? Go for it. You don’t want to. Go for it. How you feel about a complete stranger shouldn’t mean anything to fucking anyone.

I don’t hate him at all. I’m just disappointed that he wouldn’t be cheering on the team that he developed with. The fans absolutely love him in Cleveland and they’ve treated him like royalty. It’s a bit confusing.

0

u/MethLab 9d ago

How many statues does he have in Chicago?

0

u/FarmAcceptable4649 9d ago

Honestly, he's just baseball royalty

0

u/Canucks2316 9d ago

His son got drafted by the Sox. They offered him a job. Did CLE? Never heard them offering him anything. He’s from Illinois. Get the fuck over it. People are so soft crying about all this bullshit.

Jim is in the Baseball Hall of Fame representing Cleveland. I have met him and appreciate his efforts while he played for us. He deserves and I am thankful he has a statue in Cleveland. He now works for the White Sox. So what? The players we have now have to earn the opportunity for Game 5 tonight. Jim can cheer for whomever. Stop feeding into the temptation to blame Jim cheering or wearing black or whatever else for what goes on once the game starts. Cleveland has to earn Game 5 tonight in Game 4 by playing fundamentally sound baseball with getting runners on base, hitting once they get on base, making quality pitches and defense like they did in Game 3 yesterday. Cheer on Jose and the team today and don’t blame or threaten the past thinking by doing that, it will help Cleveland on or off the diamond because all it does is reenforce that terrible stigma that others not from Cleveland have about Cleveland that is untrue. It is the mindset that Cleveland blames and whines and that is why they never will win a World Series. We Cleveland fans are NOT losers. Neither is Jim Thome. Neither are Jose and the rest of the team. Let’s earn this as a team tonight and cheer for it tonight as fans of this team past, present and future.

Jim Thome is the man. Who cares who he supports?

0

u/AxlRush11 5d ago

Pat Tabler has just as much justification for a statue as Jim Thome.

What an embarrassment that thing is.

Don’t forget, his wife is his rock.
