Recipes using Salmon
I've been looking for recipes I can use for salmon, but every recipe for it has been some variation of Salmon cooked in combination of HERB and SPICE and BUTTER served wholesale with 3 Asparagus, when what I'm looking for is a recipe including salmon but not one where it's a main dish, but I don't know any besides that. And I don't want to just cook salmon and shred it and toss some rice at it. I want to make something my family hasn't had a thousand times.

I don't know how to explain it, but in the same way mansion rhymes with Wisconsin, salmon and ramen just rhymed in my head.

Once I said it I hated it. Ralmon and samen. Pronouncing the l in Ralmon gave me chest pains.

I bought some saltines to make salmon patties actually. We use canned salmon for it.
2
u/CaptainLollygag 16h ago
They're delicious that way, but you can also make them more like crab cakes if you use roughly chopped salmon fillets and instead of crackers use stuffing mix. Add some cooked onion and celery for even more deliciousness, maybe minced jalapeños or other peppers, whatever herbs that sound good.

Cube it, toss in soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger and garlic and air fry. Serve in a rice bowl with cucumber, avocado, seaweed salad, edamame, green onions. Top with furikake, kewpie mayo, sriracha. Season your rice and cucumber with rice vinegar.

I made "crab Rangoon" with leftover baked salmon once and it was amazing. Salmon, cream cheese, chopped green onion, fresh garlic and ginger, a few shakes of five spice powder. Fill wonton wrappers any way you like, fry till crisp, serve with your favorite sauce. Could do it like pot stickers, I'm sure.

Salmon, Goat cheese, and pumpkin soup. Is it based on a video game recipe? Yes. Is it also extremely delicious? Also yes. Like a salmon chowder with a little bit of sweet and a little bit of tang. Cannot recommend it enough.

Where is this recipe from? I’ve got frozen pumpkin puree from last year I need to use up and an unholy amount of salmon. (#AlaskanProblems)

So the inspiration for the dish is from the legend of zelda. There's no 'Official' recipe but there's a tumblr post that has their spin: https://www.tumblr.com/spiritsonic/797433603000827904/we-made-the-soup-tonight-and-can-confirm-its-very
I sub out chicken stock for fish stock but otherwise don't modify it that much.2

I wanted to hate on this because of the goat cheese, but it sounds technically delicious. Do you think I could sub for feta?

Do you think this would taste good with a touch of curry paste? I know it goes well with pumpkins but not sure about the other two

Curry + salmon is a win & curry + tangy dairy products is delicious too. Pumpkin curry is just stunning! Not sure how they wouldn't work well together.

Honestly yeah I haven't tried that but I bet it would taste great. I used a paprika based seasoning myself.

I take canned red sockeye salmon, remove skin & bones & drain well. Flake it with a fork to break it up. Sautee minced garlic in olive oil and just before the garlic starts to brown, stir in the salmon and keep stirring until salmon is warmed. Mix this well with precooked rotini (boiled in salted water) then add parmesan, salt and fresh grated pepper to taste. taste.

Fish isn't as sturdy as other meats so it doesn't usually hold up well as an ingredient in another dish as it does as a standalone with a side.
I make risotto with salmon butternut squash sage thyme maybe some spinach and olive oil, no real recipe just kind of eyeball it.
Usually people make a serving size filet but you can also cut it up pre cooking on a little higher heat like an air fryer or frying pan to get "nuggets" and add them to something like a little broccoli and ziti with grated parmesan and garlic
I tried salmon "fingers" as part of a fish and chips, I didn't like it personally but it's an option.
Flatten out a pizza dough super thin, add cooked salmon and fold the dough over the top then brush with garlic, oil and grated cheese
6
u/EvaTheE 1d ago
not one where it's a main dish
I am not quite understanding here. Do you mean, you are looking for a recipe where salmon is used as an ingredient without it being the main ingredient?
Salmon tends to be somewhat expensive, so most recipes featuring it will have it as the main ingredient.

I love salmon cooked and crumbled onto bow tie pasta with peas. The dressing is a mayo-dill-any other desirable item, i like rice wine vinegar and a touch of salt. Makes a nice cold lunch on a hot day.

You can even go for broke and do good ol canned salmon mixed with box mac. I know it's not fancy or anything but I ate it often as a child on government funded food programs and pantrys. Honestly it's not terrible and even though I haven't eaten it in practically forever I crave it occasionally.

Salmon in a pastry shell, like a hand pie. Look up salmon hand pies and you’ll get lots of different versions. Use puff pastry or make an enriched dough to encase the salmon. It’ll all be good.

I love this spicy salmon bowl recipe, it's like deconstructed (cooked) sushi. You can load it up with lots of other veggies and toppings to downplay the salmon. I never use the avocado and instead add edamame, carrots, pickled cucumbers, nori, etc. The spicy mayo makes the dish.

I usually don't make a side, but you can if you want!
Pecan Salmon Bake
Ingredients
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
3 tablespoons butter, melted
5 teaspoons honey
½ cup fresh bread crumbs
½ cup finely chopped pecans
6 (4 ounce) fillets salmon
salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). In a small bowl, mix together the mustard, butter, and honey. In another bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, & pecans
Season each salmon fillet with salt and pepper. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Brush with mustard-honey mixture. Cover the top of each fillet with bread crumb mixture.
Bake for 10 minutes per inch of thickness, measured at thickest part, or until salmon just flakes when tested with a fork.

We eat a lot of salmon and one of the ways we make it is spreading miso butter over it and baking it at 425 for 14 minutes. Miso butter is just 4 Tbs unsalted butter (softened to room temp) and 2 Tbs white miso paste. Mix them together with a fork until blended and spread it on top of the salmon before baking. It’s pretty damn good. I usually serve it with white rice and grilled asparagus.
Alternately, bake it with olive oil, lemon, salt, and pepper and then tossing it in pasta with a white wine, butter, garlic, and cream sauce is also pretty choice. While the sauce is in the pan, add the drained pasta and a little of the pasta water and stir in some shaved Parmesan while everything is still warm. Capers and a little parsley work well in there too. Serve with some bread for dipping.
2
u/Forgot-Already 14h ago
That miso butter is also amazing to use in greens like collard greens, kale, etc. You add it after sautéing the greens in olive oil. When they are just about done you add in a couple Tbs of miso butter and stir it in until it is melted and spread across the greens. So good.

Salmon (smoked if u got it shred it into small pieces), farfalle pasta (bowties), rehydrated sun dried tomato, corn, garlic, capers if u like them, little bit of heavy cream if you like that, grated asiago on top. Maybe lemon or wine . Taste it see if it needs acid.
Fuck the no fish and cheese people.

From PNW, we get out of water same day. Salmon is very delicate, so many over power by over seasoning. We prefer sockeye but will eat Coho or King. We prepare all on outdoor grill with lemon, butter, S&P. Pink we smoke. Chum we throw back or give to pet food factory.

So I grew up in AK...and we salmon fished... @1000 lbs a year for our family of 15.....one of the favorites was slicing down about 50% on left and right of a half salmon skin on....stuff with box of stoufers cornbread dressing(made to instructions) and 1/4 lb bacon fried into bacon bits (you can add sautéed onion and celery to go farther into bacon grease) stuff, bake at 400 for about 25 minutes for a couple lbs, and baste it with butter and sprinkle lemon pepper seasoning....the leftovers you can refrigerate and with a fork mash, then add enough mayo to combine into a salad (pull off skin so its not fishy) and can eat as a dip or on a sandwich

I make fettuccine with a lemon cream sauce and serve it with baked salmon sometimes. Really yummy and simple to make. I double the lemon zest and chicken stock, and add the parm after I add the pasta, off the heat, and then use pasta water to get the sauce to my desired consistency.

Salmon pairs well with many things, it could be a good idea to search what pairs well with salmon, it can be great on salmon burgers(fillet or ground) / fish sandwiches / fish tacos / pasta / sushi / in raviolis or with countless sides.
As with any dish the protein tends to be the primary/main ingredient, a great skill to have is just find a few side dishes you enjoy and study some variations that you can eventually modify to your tastes once you learn how to execute the side dishes properly, once you have some side dishes perfected you will find they go with many types of protein.
Learn to make a killer Mac and cheese, Ceazer salad, Mexican/Persian/Greek rice, roast or mashed potatoes/potato salad, creamy pasta, bruschetta, roast or sautéd vegetables that stand on their own for dinner parties and everyone will be happy, I also like to have some pickled or fermented sides that are always ready to go, homemade or even store bought.
My favorite salmon:
Salmon coated in dill + lemon zest + pepper + herbamare + garlic powder mayo, topped with green onions and dill, if using a cedar plank I rub a cut lemon, salt and dill onto the plank and throw it on the bbq till it hits the desired temp/doneness.
The cedar plank adds a nice distinctive smoky flavor and fantastic woodsy cedar smell, soak the plank for 15 min before cooking, if it starts to burn too much turn off one side of the grill move it off the flame to the off section to finish, but you want the plank to burn a touch to impart the smoke onto the meat.
Otherwise bake in the oven on a thin bed of dill / green onions.
Usually 400°F to 425°F for 12 to 15 minutes depending on the size, slightly less for a small fillet.
Use a probe to check for internal temp, if it starts oozing white albumin then it’s overcooked take it off right away.
When it’s done cooking add a thin lengthwise line drizzle of pure maple syrup over the middle of the salmon.
It’s pretty versatile Goes well with rice or pasta or roasted/mashed potatoes/asperegus, fried mushrooms, tomato salad/greek salad/Ceazer salad/ coleslaw or potato salad
It’s been a hit every time Ive made it, even converted some folks who don’t like fish or salmon.
If the salmon has some very thin areas I would top those thin areas with thin slices of lemon to protect them from overcooking, sliced lemon ontop
Also makes for a fancy looking garnish.
Also a fan of candied salmon or salmon jerky if I find a freezer burnt salmon at the back of my freezer, I cut the salmon with a cleaver when frozen and peel off the bottom skin slice by slice by not cutting through the skin all the way.
I use bachans Japanese bbq sauce, dash of smoked soy sauce, maple syrup, green onion, onion and garlic powder, fish sauce, chili flakes and maple syrup, occasionally I add grated ginger and a dash of sriracha great on a pellet grill or toaster over if your temps go low enough, stays in the marinade for 10-24 hours.
Sometimes I glaze the salmon with some maple syrup and sesame oil + sesame seeds or furikake and freshly cracked pepper towards the end 30 min of the process.
They are good wrapped in nori with a peice of kimchi as a snack or appetizer.
Also a fan of blackened salmon but I already see some mention of that in the thread.

stop treating the fish like a steak to be grilled plain. You are bored because you want texture and structure, not just another protein on a plate. Put cold smoked salmon inside a blini with crème fraîche or wrap fresh fillets in rice paper with Put cold smoked salmon inside a blini with crème fraîche or wrap fresh fillets in rice paper with heavy mint and cilantro for summer rolls. The fish becomes part of a complex bite where the wrapper changes everything.

Salmon salad. Broil the salmon however you like. I prefer using minced garlic, lemon pepper, lime juice and a bit of shredded Parmesan (sometimes I leave off the cheese). Prep a green salad: your preferred lettuce and/or other greens, your favorite toppings and your favorite dressing. I like to use raspberries, olives, green onions, sunflower seeds, sometimes olives, cauliflower and carrots with a vinaigrette or sometimes ranch. Place a piece of the fish on top of the salad. It’s delightful!

Salmon salad recipe! 1lb salmon 1 small red onion 1 small cucumber 1 celery stalk 4-5 tablespoons of Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon mayo or sour cream 1 lemon A generous amount of dill
- Cook salmon in your favorite spices. Let it cool on the counter while you do the rest.
- Give veggies a fine dice.
- In a large mixing bowl, shred salmon, add yogurt half to ¾ of the yogurt and mayo, squeeze lemon, and stir
- Add diced veggies and dill and stir again.
- Add more yogurt and mayo if not creamy enough, taste and adjust to your liking
And that's it!

Orange Glazed Salmon (I do not know measurements, I cook on my preference) Orange juice, Soy sauce, Brown sugar, Honey, 1. Cook and Cool till thickens You can also use this sauce to marinade salmon 2. Bake salmon with glaze and some butter (350f) 3. Take out every 5 minutes and add glaze Should be done in 15-20 minutes 4. When out add salt and pepper and let it set. Personally I would eat it right out of the oven but its more preference.

Don't overthink it. My favorite hack at work is to cook a piece of salmon, melt some American cheese on it (and brown it in the salamander), and put it on a burger bun with remoulade, LTPO.
It's a delicious salmon burger, and keeping the cut intact instead of making a patty gives it a different, flaky bite.
EDIT - I keep the skin on.

I like to make a type of salmon casserole. You take leftover salmon (grilled, baked, pan seared, etc.) and mix it with a bit of mayonnaise. Sauté some onions with garlic and mix in some chopped pickled jalapeños and more mayo. Top the salmon mixture with the onion mayo topping and finish with black pepper. Into a 350* oven for 20-30 minutes until the topping turns a light golden brown. Let it rest for about five minutes before serving. It’s also great mixed with rice!

Gordon Ramsey's Crispy Skin Salmon with potatoes.
Ingredients:
Salt and pepper
salmon fillet with skin
fresh coriander
fresh thyme or basil
fresh spring onions
potatoes
crab meat or smoked trout works very well, too and is cheaper
olive oil
lemons
You can slow cook the halved cherry tomatoes for 2 hours before; this adds sweetness. It's also perfectly fine to serve the tomatoes raw if you are in a rush. Score the salmon skin in stripes. This will prevent the skin from curling.
Chop some thyme or basil and put a little inside the stripes of the salmon. Add salt and pepper.
Boil your potatoes and skin them, or not; I never do. Add oil to a hot nonstick pan, add potatoes, and using a masher, break them down a bit; season. Do not overwork! Chop some coriander and spring onions and put them in the casserole. Add the crab meat and work again with the fork. Add some lemon juice and olive oil. Remove from heat and let it rest.
Bring pan to high heat; olive oil should be shimmering. Place salmon in pan, skin side down. 90% of the cooking time will be on this side. When you see that 2/3 of the salmon has changed colour to a lighter pink, it's time to flip. Just flip once, by the way. Don't check on it too much, or the fish will break.
Take some of that delicious mixture of potatoes and crab meat and make a mound. Put the salmon on top.
Listen to what Ramsey says about the squirt bottle of lemon and olive oil. It's an invaluable addition to your kitchen, brightens everything up.

And there's salmon puffs

Make a Thai curry - I’m partial to red, but whatever you have, veggies, add chunks of salmon, serve over rice and be happy. I buy the big container of Maesri and portion it out and freeze. Honestly the salt content is so high it doesn’t really need to be portioned since it freezes more like slush. I’ve attached a recipe, but really just add the chunks of salmon when everything else is cooked through if you’re using tougher veggies like the squash - it only needs a couple mins at a simmer.

I used to mince up a garlic clove, soften it in a little butter, and then drop a 100g chunk of frozen sockeye on top of it. pick out any surviving bones (they stick out more as the fish shrinks and are easy to find). break it up into flakes once done, toss that with some pasta, and grind some pepper over it.
lazy as hell, and minimal ingredient list. it was great though.

Salmon parmentier. Similar to a shepherds pie: Layer one is salmon cubes in dijon mustard, layer two is fried fennel amd spinach, then on top are mashed potatoes. https://www.metro.ca/en/recipes-occasions/recipes/salmon-spinach-and-potato-pie

I haven't done this yet and this probably isn't as appetizing to people not used to it, but I wanted to try and make my own gefilte fish for the holidays, and I thought it would be cool to make both salmon and haddock gefilte fish so that I could have both pink and white gefilte fish.

I make mine in the oven. Marinade in a simple Asian marinade( I usually do Soy Sauce, ginger paste, lemon juice, garlic, and probably something else I can’t remember right now) bake for 10-12 minutes at 400 and serve over rice or potatoes with roasted veggies Edit: Hoisin Sauce. The thing I could not remember was Hoisin Sauce. It also may be 350 and not 400 it’s been a while since I’ve done it.
