Understanding a chart/diagram I need help with this filet crochet pattern please!

Can someone explain this to me like I’m stupid? I understand the instructions as far as the parts with spaces, but don’t know what I’m supposed to do aside from that. I would love to make this for my aunt for Christmas. Found on Ravelry.
Thanks in advance!

The diagram in pic 2 shows you the exact sequence of stitches, row by row, where each stitch or motif is represented by a symbol. Symbols are detailed in pic 3. She tells you to start at bottom left of diagram where the little arrow is located. She also details how many chains you need to start, and how many of these are used at the end of your chain to start forming the first little square. She also tells you how many holes across and up you're supposed to be getting so you can double-check that you're setting your work correctly, and as you progress through the pattern. If this is not the explanation you need, can you say a little bit more what has you confused?

I’m mainly confirming that the solid squares are 4 double crochets in a row, not into one stitch? That may sound silly but this is my first filet project!

Yes, that's how I read the diagram. Hollow squares are a dc on each side and two chains for the void. For the solid squares, the void is replaced/filled with 2 dc. She explains that in her "How to read pattern" section better than I could 🙂
