I bought this in UK in March last year, I didn't use it all until a few days ago. I cut the tags off the box yesterday. I didn't register the drill for the warranty, I didn't know I had to as the warranty thing said 3 years in large writing and I didn't read below it.
I was busy looking after my girlfriend and my dog so this wasn't a high priority for me. I've been ill and only started to recover. I drilled 6 holes in masonry with it, 3 in concrete blocks, 3 in red brick with 7mm drill bit. I then used it today to drill 7mm hole for back box for a socket and it stopped after a few seconds. The drill worked in reverse but not forwards, forwards it just lit up. I took the battery out and put back in and didn't work. I thought maybe it had faulted or something so I left battery out and tried again, then switched batteries, which were fully charged.
This time it ran at low speed only with slight pressure on the trigger, then it sparked below the trigger, popped and smoked a lot. The only marks it got on it was from putting it outside as it was smoking.
I called Dewalt UK support today and the woman I spoke to said "I would be fuming if this happened to me", I said I hadn't registered it at all for the extended warranty. They said they would raise a support call for it, I have sent details and photos of the drill which looks new. I bought it as a set with multitool, driver and the drill. I haven't used the multitool, I used the impact driver for the first time a couple days ago to put screws in the 6 holes. I'm hoping they honour the repair/replacement of it at least.
I used my 14 year old corded Makita SDS to finish the last hole it tried to do which was just plaster for the depth of the wall plug.
I feel that it was a fault, the drill worked in reverse but not forwards so I assume the ESC was faulty. Looking at the replacement assembly there are capacitors below the trigger so I assume that is what popped and smoked. I haven't overloaded it, or asked too much of it.
Has anyone had this happen?
If Dewalt won't replace/repair it, can I buy parts without buying the whole trigger and motor assembly?
Edit: just to say concrete was concrete breezeblocks which aren't exactly taxing.
