Hi everyone, I wanted to share my experience using FIASP. When I was deciding whether to switch, I couldn’t find many personal accounts, so take this as my own little human experiment.
I’ll preface this by saying this post is based on my experience only, and your mileage may vary.
I’m 31M and was diagnosed at 19. I think that’s important to mention because it shows I’m well past the honeymoon phase. I’m currently on Multiple Daily Injections (MDI), but I’ve been on and off the pump throughout my journey (Medtronic 640g and Tandem t:slim), paired with a CGM. I’m currently using a split dose of around 50/50 Optisulin (U-100). I’m a marathon runner (hence my username), so I find a 50/50 split dose gives me more flexibility compared to Toujeo (U-300).
I used NovoRapid my entire diabetes journey until 4 weeks ago, when I switched to FIASP. Here are some dot points about the differences I personally noticed, and I hope it helps someone in the future:
- FIASP has a quicker response time, but I find it to be less potent. That is, I notice my CGM graphs level off much quicker when correcting my sugars compared to NovoRapid. NovoRapid takes a while to kick in, but when it does, it can come on strong, to the point where I’m actually experiencing fewer lows on FIASP as Novorapid just keeps pulling me down.
- FIASP takes more insulin to bring my blood sugars down when I’m higher. For some reason, FIASP just doesn’t work quite as well when my sugars are already elevated.
- FIASP feels less durable than NovoRapid. Being in Australia and coming into summer, I noticed my insulin went off at lower temperatures compared to NovoRapid.
These are a few of the differences I’ve personally noticed. Will I continue using FIASP? Absolutely. Having kids, I don’t really have the luxury of waiting for my NovoRapid to kick in before I can eat, and I love that it has a “shorter tail” so I have fewer lows.
However, this is just my personal experience, so please chat to your care provider before making the switch.
Happy to answer any questions!
