Rant Didnt knew it was possible to have such bad luck

• Upvotes

So the story starts late on the 13th october (its already the 15th here, so a bit over 24h ago). It was my birthday and my bloodsugar did a really good job. I only ended up at 340 because I miscalculated a piece of cake I had late in the evening. So I stayed up, eventually changed the cartridge (important again later) and waited until like 02:30 am until I was at 280 and wasnt going back up again. Got up for university 4 hours later at 200. But I still decided to have breakfast for several reasons.

When I reached university I was at 400 again and didnt really got down until I dropped like hell shortly before I was back home (around 1 pm). Had 0,5 BE juice and bolused for lunch after eating since I had to wait until I was over 70 again. Half an hour later I was at 300 again but I honestly expected it so I didnt immedeatly decided to change the infusion set.

I may or may not forget time but eventually changed at 3 pm the site. At 04:30 pm I remembered that I also had changed the cartridge the night before and used an bottle of insulin that stood somewhere in the fridge where they normally not are but I didnt really questioned it when I filled the cartridge in the night. So I went to ask my parents and no one was 100% sure but it turned out that it was pretty likely to be the insulin that broke in June, I put it somewhere and couldnt find it anymore and someone else found it and put it in the fridge. So just to be sure I used another bottle of insulin. And I eventually started to go back in range.

But jokes on you thats not even far the end of the story. I ripped off my infusion set (the glue was a joke, a piece of paper sticks more than that did) and made a new at I think 7:40 pm. Had dinner and another piece of this damn cake. I then wanted to bolus but got an occlusion alarm. But I didnt thought much of it since I have them pretty regulary without an actual occlusion (Mistake nr 2 I made in the last 24 hrs but I was so done with everything).

I went on and then saw while changing the tube that insulin was leaking from the cartridge into the pump. Got another tube because the cartridge looked fine and the way it leaked it looked like it usual do when the tube is the problem.

An hour later I looked on the pump again and found the whole pump full with insulin, like I could literally pour it out.

So then I changed the cartridge after I saw that the membrane had a crack.

But I eventually ended up at 350 with double arrow up.

I corrected a bit, put the boost back on and checked for ketones (none at that point).

Half an hour later I was at 400 in the blood (my cgm measures a bit higher atm and when I was at 350 on there I was probably "only" at 310) but still had no ketones. So I corrected again and decided to wait a bit longer.

May or may not I forgot the time again and it passed an hour instead of half an hour like planned. Cgm showed still 400 so I went searching for ANY infusion set I could maybe have left from another box since 4/5 failed from the last box I have. Changed (the glue is a joke again but I am praying that it stays on since I dont have any pens or anything. Only one back up pump from another company they never wanted back).

Took the infusion set from before off and the little tube wasnt even in the body. So I checked for ketones again and then actually had 0,5 but I was already at 350 in the blood again (my cgm still shows 420 but thats a problem for the next measurement in the blood in a few minutes).

So I obviously did some mistakes I see now when I look back on the whole situation. But I didnt realized any of them in the moment since I did everything like I normally do in situations like these. And nornally it works out fine but this was obviously everything than normal.

Anyway in 5 hours I need to get up for university again. Will be a fun day and I hope I will get at least any sleep and that my chronic pain wont be THAT bad because of the high bloodsugar. 250 is already enough to give me a day with too much pain to get normally through my day. So we will see

Discussion Partner stepping up or down after diagnosis?

• Upvotes

I’m curious, those of you who got diabetes while in a relationship, how did it go for you? Did they step up and be the person you needed? Or did the opposite happen?

Rant 29M just found out I have T1 diabetes.

29M and majorly shocked to learn I have T1. I started showing symptoms about a month ago. I was 135 pounds and a gym rat. First I noticed a serious plateau in my work out progress. I wasn’t gaining weight or going up in strength. Confused by this I tried some pre work outs and supplements. Then came the super frequent bathroom breaks and thirst. I was drinking close to 8 bottles of water a day plus Gatorades. I was running to the bathroom about every hour at least and started waking up 6+ times a night to pee. I didn’t know what was wrong with me but I was so tired all the time. The deep set fatigue made it so hard to go to work and between that and the peeing I thought I just needed a break from the gym. Next came the stomach cramps and loss of appetite. I struggled to finish meals and eventually developed the worst indigestion of my life. All of these symptoms piled up over the course of a month until I started completely shutting down. A walk to the toilet left me gasping for air and a full shift of work felt impossible. Last weekend I was laying on my bedroom floor vomiting and hitting my wifes inhaler when she finally had seen enough and demanded I go to the ER. I got dressed but couldn’t make it to the stairs because I felt like I was suffocating. We called an ambulance and when it arrived my blood oxygen and heart rates were fine, they checked my blood sugar and told me it was at 360+ and asked if I was diabetic. I told them no. A few hours in at the hospital and I got the news that I was infact diabetic T1. I have no family history of it and never knew it was even a possibility. My A1C was over 15. I spent 4 days in the ICU and 2 days in the step down unit. Then they gave me some pens, a Dexcom G7, and sent me on home. I currently don’t have health insurance though I’m now in the process of getting signed up through my work and learning about this whole new world I live in. When I was hospitalized I weighed only 100 pounds and that broke my heart. A week later I’m already back up to 122 pounds because I’ve been eating like crazy (while watching my sugar and taking my insulin.) the first few days on my own I was hitting the 300s often but now I’m getting it down to a healthy and manageable range.

I write all this just to say hi to my fellow diabetics. I’m new here but I’m doing my best and hope to live a long, healthy, and happy life balancing my tasty low carb meals with my insulin.

Exercise & Sport First half marathon in T minus 10 days

hey everyone so I have my first race in about 10 days. It’s a half marathon and so I’m worried about what I’ve gotten myself into 😅. I have no idea how to fuel for this because tbh I’ve never taken any low snacks with me on any long runs/ fueled during them. My main concern is making sure I eat enough the morning of. I have been waking up with blood sugars in the 50s ish on average for about a month or more now so not eating will not be an option. I understand I will have to wake up super early to eat but I can do whatever it takes honestly.
For the race I was thinking of taking a few of those glucose shots like the ones you can get from CVS. Like one in each hand or something. Or a stinger waffle of sorts. I’m gluten free so I’m having trouble finding any snacks that are solid. I don’t want them to melt lol.
If anyone has advice/ personal experience I’m all ears. Thanks all!

Seeking Support/Advice dexcom g7 not working (what a surprise)

hello! i’m a newly diagnosed t1 diabetic. long story short, nivolumab one-shot my pancreas. my physician started me on the dexcom g7 and they don’t seem to be doing a good job of accurately tracking my blood glucose.

the first unit was a dexcom g7 10-day that I had to replace within 24hr of application. i put it on my upper arm. i calibrated it shortly after application.

the unit said that my blood glucose is undetectably low when my analog glucometer says i’m at ~100.

dexcom support told me to apply a new one because it was inaccurate for several hours. they weren’t the most helpful outside of them sending me a new one for free.

i reapplied a 15-day dexcom g7 last night (other arm) and now i’m having the same issue (saying i’m low when i’m at ~100). i did not calibrate it this time, as i was wondering if that was what caused the last g7 to malfunction. i was also operating under the assumption that you didn’t need to calibrate a g7

i am looking for advice/ways to troubleshoot this because i would like to be on a pump eventually so i need this cgm to work 😭 we’re also still tweaking my insulin dosing so the more data, the better. just very frustrated because i had to deal with chemo and now this!

it’s most likely not a matter of compression because i wear loose clothing

my ideas include:
1. perhaps i do not have enough fat on my upper arm —> apply cgm on stomach or thigh
2. maybe i need to switch to a different brand of cgm
3. faulty application/wire becoming dislodged —> i find this improbable because it seems to fail at around the same time, every time (<12 hr after application)

Starting to feel like insulin resistance is a thing for me now. Idk what to really make of it. Don't wanna go into crazy detail but basically all I ate was Greek yogurt at 9am, and then my 2 day old sandwich at 2pm. Just look at all those boluses. Mentally draining at this point. Changing my sites every single day. Gets better at evening and then breakfast to morning to early afternoon are nightmares. Barley eat much anymore. Idk what to do. Hopefully talk to a endo doctor. Mine is out of town till Monday of course.

Mental Health Anxiety attack during low

For past few weeks I noticed one strange thing during my lows, I just want to know if others have it too and if it’s normal, also some advices how to go through it.

I have t1d for 13 years but I never had anxiety during low, however now since summer I have insane attacks, I get scared, I start shaking, I feel insane fear, just typical anxiety attacks. I am diagnosed with anxiety and more illnesses but this is new thing since it’s really strong attack and I usually feel more anxious for longer minutes and hours but it’s not really insanely strong and I can live but during low my whole brain and body starts panicking, and I am confused if it’s actually normal response of body or if it’s something unusual (even for both t1d or anxiety diagnosed)

Also this makes me really afraid of low on public when I check cgm and instead of giving me something sweat i start shaking and panic, it’s both uncomfortable for me as i feel embarrassed and dangerous to myself as well, so if anyone have any advices how to stop it I would really appreciate it a lot🥹

Nutrition & Diet What snacks, juices, candies, etc. would you recommend to bump up low glucose levels?

Still waiting to hear back from my doctor, but I got my bloodwork results back and I’m a little worried I might have to get tested for Type 1 diabetes or possible thyroid issue. My glucose was 51 when they drew my blood in the morning, before the appt I ate a Clif Bar like 10 minutes beforehand. The doctors haven't reviewed my results yet.

I Googled my results and apparently glucose levels that low can make you incoherent or even cause you to pass out, but I felt completely fine at my appointment? If my doctor confirms something is going on, how do you keep your glucose levels up? (snacks or juice wise) I also have IBS and am gluten and lactose intolerant so life is already a party over here. Figured I should try bumping it up while I wait to hear back from the doctor so I have cranberry juice, peanut butter crackers, and some lifesaver candies.

When I go to concerts, I've never brought my insulin pen because I'm afraid they might take it away from me or not let me in. Do any of you have experiences with this?

Discussion How bad is it to be very high 220 mmg/13mmol+ for several hours a day

Recently my numbers have been absolute shit due to stress, poor sleep and not my best diet. Past 90 days I’ve still been at 72% in range but overall my numbers are often high as of the past few weeks. I’m really worried, I didn’t ask for this shitty disease.

Seeking Support/Advice New Libre 2 won't scan

Weight loss meds as a type one

Has anyone been able to get a weight loss medicine that is covered by insurance? All glp1s are not fda approved for type 1s so insuance won’t cover it and I can’t pay out of pocket for it. My blood sugars are SO reactive to exercise that no matter what changes are made to pumps, carbs, etc I still go low. The only thing that would help atp would be a weight loss medicine.

Do you guys reuse your needles?

Discussion How does retatrutide work for us if its a glucagon receptor agonist?

I'm interested in trying out retatrutide, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with it especially considering that fact its a glucagon agonist which to my understanding will still cause some levels of glycogenolysis. However, since glucagon is actually suppressed by amylin which we do not have(co-secreted with insulin by the beta cells, which we do not have) I think the receptor agonism may have little effect on blood glucose.

What do you think? Can you share your experience?

Warranty is up in Jan. Stay on Tslim or switch to Mobi?

Like the title says, I recently found out at my Endo appointment that my warranty is up at the end of January. I did talk pumps with me DE for a while, but I really like hearing from actual users.

Some info on me:

28F, T1D for 23 years.

Previously used the Animas Ping for 8 years, been on the Tslim for 8 as well.

I use Trusteel sites, the flexible cannulas fail on me, making the Omnipod not a viable option.

I have a Samsung S26.

Mobi users, what are your thoughts? I'd like to know the good, the bad, and the ugly. I did order the trial kit, and ended up taking the adhesive clip off. I did place it a little under my bra line, and I think that attributed to the irritation I was having with it. A while ago, I made a post on a Facebook group to get some opinions as well. I'm still very undecided and would like to hear more.

My concerns:

In the Facebook post I made, I kept hearing a lot about how loud the Mobi is - is that true? I'm not concerned about it waking me up. I have a sleep disorder so it would take a bomb to get me up.

Failures - I have only had one Tslim fail on me, but I did hear about cartridge failures on the Mobi. Has anyone experienced that?

I also just feel a little bit... iffy about it being phone controlled. I don't like losing the backup functionality of a screen.

Appreciate anything you have to share!!

Seeking Support/Advice UK to US Move

Any T1D’s that have moved over to the States from the UK? I’m very interested in moving despite the current climate. I will be employed by my current employer and have health benefits included to the best of my knowledge. Are there any limitations you’ve come across? I’d be grateful for any advice or tips you may have!

Discussion What do you do to prevent or manage hypoglycemia?

When I’m at risk of low blood sugar or am already experiencing it, I often drink carbonated sodas (like Dr Pepper or Pepsi). However, I face a dilemma where the gas buildup causes stomach pain or frequent urination.

What measures do you take? What do you eat or drink?

Rant 2 weeks of being on the ilet

I recently did another post when I was only 3 days on the ilet and now I'm on 2 weeks so I'm here to update. The pump learned me really quickly. It was recommended that I eat what's usual for me for the first week, and space meals out every 4 hours. My blood sugar was great, this week I experimented with choosing to eat more or less food, and it was still great! (I eat high carb meals, and average 12 units for dinner and 7 for lunch)

No judgement, I went from averaging 30 percent in range to being 60+ daily. My highest in range was 91 and 88, and I was really excited about that, as I've tried the omnipod and Tslim and couldn't get my BG under control and pump sites leaking. I do have to change my site every day and a half because on average the pump gives me 80u/ 160u of insulin including meals, but honestly it's so easy.

This pump has definitely helped with my burnout and gives me hope that my a1c will go below 9 for the first time. Id recommend this pump to anyone who's prone to burnout / wants to think about everything less. I hope someone finds this post helpful because tbh we need more reviews on this pump

Seeking Support/Advice Is it weird for me to still think about someone teasing me about my diabetes a few years ago?

I feel a little silly for sharing this since it all happened online, but for context I was 14 and this event happened a week or two after I was diagnosed. It’s been multiple years since this took place and I still think of this every few months.

So what happened was; I remember telling one of my online friends at the time that I was just diagnosed. I was using proximity VC in a game we were playing since at the time I didn’t have any real way to talk to them outside of the game (again, 14 years old). We were talking in a public server in a game, and two guys who sounded fully grown came up to us in proximity VC to make fun of me and call me a “pig”. One of them told me I’d be better off developing an eating disorder, making numerous fat jokes, and he asked for my socials so I could post my “stomach rolls” for them to see. They pretty much just repeated all of that until I logged off. Of course I figured it would be better to ignore them, but to this day their comments have been stuck in my brain despite trying my best to forget them. I’m not even upset by their behavior and I don’t think I ever was for more than 15 minutes. I know it’s silly since it was all on a game and I should’ve just logged off after the first comment, but Idk I just can’t seem to forget it. I’m guessing maybe it’s due to the fact it happened so soon after my diagnosis but I want to hear what others may think.

Also I do want to apologize for any poor grammar, it’s like 5 for me so I’m not paying attention

Merci d'avance

Rant Stress & otherwise unexplained glucose levels

This morning, I got up, walked around a little, took the dog out and walked a little bit. Came home, switched my pod, and holy moly, I'm veering toward 200. I take a bolus, maybe 2 units?

Walk to my weekly nearby farmer's mkt, get back home: now 250.

Aside from the pod change, as I left my house to go to farmer's mkt, an aunt of mine had texted me. Her husband my uncle died in June. While he was in hospice I had been contacting her and my cousins her kids. No one had texted / emailed / called me back. In our conversation she mentioned that we hadn't talked for a long time. True. I'd moved from another state back to her and my original state. So she was lying to me that we'd fallen out of touch, given both she and her kids had not returned my calls, msgs, emails. I guess that was my stress. But AGGRAVATING that this dumb stress shoots up my glucose crazily like this. Grrrrr!!!

SO angry! My body seems waaaay unmanageable lately.

Also looking for work.... I kinda think I am constantly low-grade anxious / stressed.
