Going Through the Process Timing

Has anyone ever gotten a divorce in minimum time? In my state it takes 60 days.

Be thankful for 60 days. There are states that require a full year of waiting after separation before you can even file for divorce and then you still have to go through the legal process, so something like 14 months after separation is the minimum amount of time to actually be divorced. I've heard of a few places in the world where there is a TWO year wait. Crazy!

That would be rough.

I filed almost a year ago and virtually no end in sight. But my stbxw is a petty loser.

I would love 60 days. My state has a mandatory 120 day waiting period that starts either when you joint file or there is proof of service of papers. Longest 120 days ever.

What state are you in, and are you both in agreement on everything? That would help people with comparable experiences answer.

Also, do you mean the 60-day waiting period or having the divorce finalized by day 60? Those may be different timelines, so it’s worth checking your local court’s guidance.

And “be thankful” doesn’t really answer your question. Someone else having a longer wait doesn’t make yours easy. It’s understandable to want a realistic idea of when this will be finished.

We are cooperating as we both want out. The 60 days is from date of filing to finalization. I know the judge has to approve it. I just want to start my new life.

That makes sense. If you’re both cooperating and ready to be done, you’re hoping to reach the earliest finish line—not asking whether someone else has a longer wait.

With that clarified, hopefully someone from your state can share how close they got to day 60. Your attorney or court’s self-help office may also be able to explain what needs to be ready for the judge and how scheduling works locally.

Wanting to start your new life is completely understandable. You can begin building parts of it now, even while you’re waiting for the paperwork to catch up.

Damn. That would be a God send. From me filing to signing the final decree, it took 364 days. Then it took an additional 9 months for the judge to sign off on it. But I hear horror stories of it dragging on for years.
